This Indian Standard (Second Revision) was adopted by the Bureau of Indian Standards on30 October 1989. after the draft finalized by the Cement and Concrete Sectional Committee hadbeen approved by the Civil Engmeermg DIVIsion Councti,

For architectural purposes, a pastel fimsh is sometimes required for finishing and decorative work mconcrete. To achieve best results It IS advisable to use wbue Portland cement wuh a suitable fineaggregate, and. if the surface IS to be treated, also coarse aggregate. This type of'cement has also theadvantage that it IS not habje to cause statmng, smce It has low content of soluble aJkalis. WhitePortland cement IS generally meant for non-structural use. White Portland cement 1S made from rawmaterials contaming very lrttle Iron OXide and managanese oxide. LImited quantuies of certainchemicals. wtnch WIll Improve whneness of cement witbout affecting the physical properties, may beadded during manufacture,

In this standard. the chemical requirements of white Portland cement are specified generally in hnewnh those of 33 grade ordinary Portland cement ( see IS 269 : 1989) except that maximum Iron OXIdecontent IS 1·0 percent, and requirement for loss on Ignition has been deleted. Further the strengthrequirements of while Portland cement are specified as not less than ninety percent of tbose of 33grade ordinary Portland cement ( see IS 269 : 19S9). In addmcn, the requirement and method oftest for degree of whiteness are also Included m tfus standard.

Thrs standard was first Issued as an emergency standard in 1976 and subsequently revised in 1978.Since the publication of first revrsron of this standard. large number of amendments have been issuedfrom time 10 time in order to modify various requirements based on experience gamed with the use ofthe standard and the requirements of the users and also keeping 111 view the raw matenals and fuelavailable In the country for manufacture of cement. The important amendments include modificationIn the tolerance requirements for the mass of cement packed In bags. deleting the requirement ofpercentage of alumina to that of Iran oxide, permitting packaging of cement in 10 and 1 kg bags,mcorporanng a note allowing determination of fineness In terms of residue by dry srevmg by mutualagreement and incorporaung a provrsron for issumg a certificate indicatmg the total chloride contentIn percent by mass of cement. In view of these large number of amendments. the Sectional Committeedecided to brmg out the second revrsion of the standard Incorporating all these amendments so as tomake It more convenient for the users.

Mass of cement packed m bags and the tolerance requirements shall be in accordance with the relevantprovisions of the Standards of Weights and Measures ( Packaged Commoduies ) Rules, 1977 and C~I.Z

The composition of the committee responsible for the formulation of tbis standard is given inAnnex D.

For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard IS complied with. thefinal value, observed or calculated, expressmg the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off inaccordance with IS 2 : 1960 'Rules for roundmg off numerical values (revised)'. The number ofSignificant places retamed tn the rounded off value should be the same as that ofthe specified value inthis standard.

3 TERMINOLOGY

3.1 For the purpose of this standard, the defini­tions given in IS 4845 : 1968 shall apply.

4 MANUFACTURE

4.1 While Portland cement shall be manufacturedby inttmarely grinding the Portland cement cankerWith appropriate proportion of natural or chemicalgypsum so as to produce a cement capable ofcomplying With this standard. No materialshall be added at the time of grmdmg, other thangypsum or water or both, and not more than onepercent of air-entraining agents or surfactantswhich have proved not to be harmful and do nothave any negative Influence on the degree ofwhiteness of cement.

S CHEMICAL REQUIREMENTS

5.1 When tested in accordance with the methodsgiven in IS 4032: 1985. white Portland cement shallcomply With the chermcal requirements given In

Table 1.

6 PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

6.1 Physical requirements of whrte Portlandcement shall be as laid down in IS 269 : J989except that compressive strength of mortar pre­pared from white Portland cement shall not be lessthan 90 percent of those specified for 33 gradeordinary Portland cement.

NOTE - Those Industries which require fineness ofwhite Portland cement In terms of residue by drysieving, tested by the method deccr rbed In IS40JI( Pan 1 ): 1988, may specef'y the same addeuonaf lywhile placlfll order to a manuracrurer by mutualaareemenl.

6.1.1 Notwithstanding the strength requirementsspectfied In 6.], the cement shall show a progressiveincrease III strength from the strength at 72 hours.

8 MANUFAC1'URER'S CERTIFICATE

8.1 The manufacturer shall satisfy himself thatthe cement conforms to the requirements of thisstandard. and if requested. shall furnish a certi­ficate to tbis effect to the purchaser or his repre­sentative witbin to days of despatch of thecement.

8.2 The manufacturer shall furnish a certificate,Within ten days of despatch of cement, indrcanngthe total chloride content In percent by mass ofcement.

Portland Cement' and the number of bags to atonne or the nominal average net mass of the­cement (ue 9.2) shall be marked legibly andindelibly on each bag. Bags shall be in goodcondition at the time of inspection.

9.2 The average net mass of cement per bag shallbe 50 kg ( see Annex C ).

9.2.1 The average net mass of cement per bag mayalso be 10 or 1 kg subject to tolerances as givenin 9.2.1.1 and packed in suitable bags as r greed tobetween the purchaser and tile manufacturer.
