birthdayhappyKassiWhat’s your favourite thing about working at Isaac?I can message the girls on Facebook at odd hours of the night and morning and get a reply. All conversations turn delusional and hilarious.

What was your best moment of 2013?The August Expo in Mackay. Seeing that people are following us, getting information from us, and generally love what we do is a fantastic boost to keep going and realise we are doing the right thing.

Who has surprised you?The readers. Social Media. Our team. My husband.

Who has made you laugh the most?Actually, I think I’ve made Mel laugh the most, because of my terrible spelling and grammar… she’s a word Nazi so I always ‘intentionally’ make horrible spelling mistakes , anything to get a twitch out of her… in turn we are in fits of laughter.

Who do you admire in the industry?The business sales man. The ones that have to go and sell their pants off to ensure the business is successful. I take my hat off to you all!

What are you most excited about for 2014?The unknown. You may already know of some major things happening in 2014 for yourself, (holidays, a wedding perhaps...) but the unexpected little bits in between are often the most exciting.

What’s your favourite thing about working at Isaac? Ha-ha, that’s easy! I can indulge in my slightly OCD, perfectionist side and no one judges me! Except, Kassi sometimes… quite often…

What is your favourite article from Isaac’s 2013 issues? Another easy one. The photo of my daughter Peyton taken by Kath Heke for Issue 2. That image rendered me speechless (and that’s not easy) when I saw it for the first time and made her father cry. Incredible.

What was your funniest moment?There’ve been so many! Kassi and I cry with laughter quite often. But I’d have to say the DIY cake photo shoot. Honestly, who can stuff up a packet mix cake better than I? No one. The thing turned out like an Olympic weight discus. We had to start again.

Who do you admire in the industry?Photographers. I’ve witnessed them in action on photo shoots, I’ve sat with them while editing (believe me, that is HOURS of work) and I’ve seen the end result in their amazing images. I know how time consuming and sometimes difficult it is to produce those images. Having said that, their passion and love for the job is constantly evident, and the rewards for their efforts are pretty damn magical.

What are you most excited about for 2014?Lots! Isaac growing bigger and better. My son Keenen starting high school. Getting to work in my immaculate office I reorganised recently – yes, I am that weird. And probably most of all, a family holiday to Vanuatu!

Having married last year, what have you learned in your f irst year of marriage?There’s a lot of hype and activity leading up to one of the most precious days in your life, so it’s sad that it’s over so quickly (the day can fly past in the blink of an eye). I’ve learnt that it’s important to take time to cherish your new hubby and enjoy this exciting time of being newlyweds.

You’ve also recently joined the Isaac team, what has been your favourite moment to date?I’m ridiculously excited to be a part of the Isaac team. To date highlights include meeting some of our beautiful readers at our research night as well as working on Issue 4 and 2014 activities and promotions.

What was your favourite article from Isaac’s 2013 issues?Wowsers! I guess my favourite section within the magazines are the DIY features. Particularly Issue 3 where we demonstrated how you could prepare your own wedding cake - it was simple and flawlessly beautiful!

Favourite wedding day memory?Asking a bride to pick her favourite memory is like asking Carrie Bradshaw to pick her favourite shoes, but here goes! Something that my husband and I always talk about and relive is our wedding photos. After our ceremony, we were on such a high and doing our photos was the most fun we’ve had.

What are you most excited about for 2014?Without a doubt, our honeymoon! We had to delay due to a number of reasons but cannot wait for our European winter getaway!

Often when we celebrate a birthday, depending on how big the number is, we shy away from the day, maybe even pretending it doesn’t exist. But here at Isaac, where the number is only 1, we couldn’t be more excited or proud. And the thought that one day it might hit double digits? Woohoo, now that will be a party filled with chocolate crackles, fairy bread and red fizzy drink!

It’s been a year that’s for sure. We’ve had more ups and downs than a Gold Coast roller coaster. But, every time we hit the bottom of the track, we soar back up higher than before. Good thing we’re adrenalin junkies…

You know you’re doing something right when the workload outgrows the number of staff and so we searched round the amusement park and found ourselves another adrenalin junkie to hop on the rollercoaster. Welcome to our new Marketing Director, Melissa. Hope you enjoy the ride!

We know we always say it, but in case you didn’t hear it all the other times… thank you. To the business owners and suppliers who have been the safety harness in that roller coaster, helping to keep us on track and not letting us jump ship! To our husbands and families, probably the seat cushions, (probably not the most complimentary of metaphors, but you know what we mean…) our buffers, the ones to soften the blows and cushion the falls.

A few of you sit at the very top of the loop. The photographers, when they send us THAT image - be it the one that makes the cover, or a real bride, or the perfect photo of a little girl - that we just have to have. The readers, whether we meet them in person or they message us and tell us how much they loved an article or love the magazine as a whole. You can’t imagine how much we love the feedback. Advertisers, suppliers and contributors alike, that you want to be part of our magazine makes us so proud. Thank you all.

So, bring on 2014! We hear they are building a new ride on the Gold Coast… wonder how high it goes…

Firstly, congratulations! Tell us what made you decide to enter our competition?I saw it on the Isaac Facebook page, and thought “Why not give it a go!!” I’ve never won anything, so thought my chances of winning were pretty slim! I thought it was the perfect opportunity to help me get in shape and be the beautiful bride I’ve always dreamed of being.

Tell us about you and your f iancé, Luke.Luke and I have been together for 4 1/2 years. His proposal was magical, I arrived home from work one evening to find our hallway filled with candles. I followed them into our kitchen and there was Luke down on one knee. The whole night was planned; dinner was cooked, there was a bottle of my favourite wine, chocolate dipped strawberries and rose petals everywhere! It was perfect, just the two of us in our new home that we built together last year.

Do you have a dream dress in mind?I have an idea of what I want in a dress, but I’ve been told to be open minded when going dress shopping, as what you want may not always be what you end up getting!

How much planning has gone into your wedding to date?I’ve booked the venue, ceremony, photographer, cake, hair, make up and bridesmaid dresses! We meet our co-ordinator on Daydream Island next month, I think I’ll feel very relieved then!

What are you most excited about in regards to the health and exercise plans from Snap Fitness and Mass Nutrition?I’m excited to just feel better about myself. I see it as a huge confidence booster, and to be given this opportunity is just amazing. I’m still in shock! I just want to feel beautiful on my wedding day, and be able to show photos to our kids one day and be proud of myself and what I’ve achieved.

What are you most nervous about?!I’m nervous about walking down the aisle!! I will be holding on to my dad tight, so if I go I guess he’s coming with me!!

Is Luke excited for you, will he get on board with the new regime as well?He’s really happy for me! He said he’ll keep me motivated and kick me out of bed on mornings when I just don’t feel like going! However, he has a very big sweet tooth, so as long as he keeps the naughty food away from me!

Protein Breakfast BallsINGREDIENTS1 cup almond butter or spread¾ cup agave nectar or raw honey1 cup rolled oats1 cup ground flax seed meal½ - ¾ cup dark chocolate chips (to taste)1 cup mixed nuts or seeds (run through food processor before adding to mix)1 cup dried cranberries (could use dried fruit of your choice)1 cup chocolate Whey Protein Powder (can use any high quality protein powder)1 pinch cinnamon powder (to taste)

Protein ShakeINGREDIENTS½ cup mango – fresh or frozen½ banana1 tbsp. agave nectar or honey1 cup milk (more if you prefer a thinner consistency)1 scoop vanilla protein powder½ cup frozen vanilla yoghurt1 pinch of cinnamon (to taste)

rasberry + Date SliceINGREDIENTS10 dates¼ cup of raspberries4 tbsp. coconut oil2 cup of raw cashews2 ½ cups of shredded coconut4 tbsp. of water1 cup of almond meal or almondsDash vanilla essence or extractPinch of salt

INSTRUCTIONSBlend ingredients and drink it while it’s cold!

INSTRUCTIONSBase – Blend 1 cup raw cashews, 1 cup shredded coconut and pinch of salt and blend until oil begins coming from nuts and coconut. Add vanilla and blend again. Press into container lined with baking paper and set aside.

Topping - Blend 1 cup of cashews, 1½ cup shredded coconut and the almonds until very fine.

Add dates, raspberries, coconut oil and water and blend until smooth. Press over top of base and refrigerate overnight.

INSTRUCTIONSMix together the oats, flax meal, almond butter, whey protein and honey all together first. Add the mix of nuts/seeds and dried fruit. Finally add in the chocolate chips. Mix well and roll them into balls - approx. 1 tbsp. Keep in refrigerator until required.

You want to propose on Valentine’s Day, but at the same time you don’t. Hearts, flowers and clichés abound on that particular day but you just know it’s the day she’s secretly dreamed that you’d propose on. So how do you go about it in a way that will make it unique and memorable while staying far away from clichés?

Avoid red roses like the plague. Just don’t do it. The same can be said of chocolates, especially those in heart shaped boxes. Unless she has a deep love of red roses or Hershey Kisses are her all-time-favourite-can-not-live-without-them-chocolates, don’t offer up generic gifts in the hopes of a resounding yes. By choosing red roses and chocolates, you will throw her into the mass consumer category, along with thousands of others on that day. She is unique, an individual, a treasure, and your one and only… so step away from the chocolate aisle. Now. And before you consider walking down the card aisle? Don’t.

Restaurants are also to be avoided. Do not even THINK about proposing in one. Chances are the man sitting at the table beside

you, the one with nervous beads of sweat dripping down his forehead, is also planning to propose and nothing would be more awkward than the pair of you dropping to one knee at the exact same moment.

“Oh… sorry mate, you go first.” “No, you’re right, your knee touched the ground first, you go.” “Nah, seriously, I’ll wait. Go for it, and… (hearty slap on the shoulder) good luck, mate!” Meanwhile, two girls wait… or don’t. They may have left the building.

Oh and while we’re still on bended knee in the restaurant… engagement ring in the champagne? Uh uh.

To receive the desired response to a Valentine’s Day proposal, shun all public declarations of love. Head for the hills, head indoors, your favourite beach or just a walk. Whatever you do, do it out of the public eye and in an unpopulated location. Act casual, pretend it’s just any other day. Surprise her, do the unexpected.

The rules have changed when it comes to wedding stationery and unlike even a mere decade ago, there are no limitations and endless possibilities. No longer is the bridesmaid’s dress the main inspiration for the colour of your invitations. Now you can show your guests, maybe a hint of your wedding theme, but more importantly your personality and style as a couple. So, with what seems like an infinite number of choices, how do you decide? How do you pick your wedding stationery?

Begin by deciding upon your wedding style or theme. Vintage, retro, country chic or urban, this style will set the tone for your invitations. Remember, this is the first impression your guests will receive of your wedding, the first hint of what they might expect from your day. If your wedding is country chic, you don’t want to send them all out buying cocktail dresses because you’ve sent them a sleek urban styled invitation.

Once your style is decided upon, search the internet for styles that suit. This will help to narrow down the choices before you meet with any suppliers. Again with suppliers there are many options, and costs and delivery times will vary. You can expect to pay around $2.50 - $5.00 for an invite pack, each containing 1 x Save the Date, 1 x invitation and 1 x RSVP. When looking for suppliers, ask around, as past brides often provide the most reliable feedback.

Now for some inspiration! Ironically, while the modern rule is there are no rules, the trends of late are retro and vintage, with styles and fonts harking back to a bygone era, albeit with a modern twist. Look around at art works that inspire you to get examples of fonts. Parisian soap label art, retro art prints, or damask patterns are a good place to start.

For the eco conscious couple, why not go all out eco with your stationery? You could go DIY and make your own recycled paper and card. But if that’s too time consuming, there are a myriad of recycled choices now and these days being eco-friendly certainly doesn’t mean sacrificing style, in fact usually it’s the complete opposite.

When it comes to the wording on your invitations, formal is really a thing of the past. Along with the design, the wording sets the tone for your day, so be as casual, formal, humorous or clever as you like! A quirky poem written together, or the lyrics of a favourite song, anything that reflects you as a couple.

Don’t just stop with the invitations, take it outside! Think about your envelopes, they could be in a pattern matching the invitation, or made from recycled paper, or even in a fun, quirky box tied up with string or ribbon. And because there are no rules, mix things up a bit. Why post your thank you notes when you could give them to your guests on the day, (see picture) saving yourself a time consuming job and making your guests feel extra special at the same time.

TIMBER ARBOUR

Use old timber you have lying around or source from your local recycle yard.

You will require:2 x 1.8m lengths1 x 2.5m length2 x 50cm lengths - for bracing each top corner2 x 40cm lengths – approx. 15cm square. These are for the feet of the frame

Lay all the pieces of timber on the ground and begin gluing and nailing from the top of the frame down.

Once completed, stand up and paint or stain timber or leave natural if you prefer, then drape in décor of your choice – in this case, sheer fabric with a touch of baby’s breath makes a simple and elegant statement.

Note: Lengths are approximate sizes and you can vary these depending on the size of arbour you require.

I am not a local by any stretch of the imagination, in fact I hail from New Zealand originally, so whenever I travel somewhere new in the region, it always feels like I’m on holiday, even if it’s only an hour and a half up the road. And when my destination is a bay of white sand and crystal clear turquoise waters… well, it feels like I’ve arrived in heaven.

This was my first impression of Hydeaway Bay as I kicked off my shoes and buried my toes in the hot sand. Heaven. Oh, I know beautiful beaches stretch right along the coast, I’ve been to a great many of them, but this one made me feel as though I’d

jumped on a boat and was standing on the beach of one of the Whitsunday islands.

After a drive from Mackay peppered by the odd torrential downpour, sightings of many a cow and cane field, I caught my very first glimpse of the vibrant water glistening in the sun and knew I would be rewarded for making the trip. I realised, as I stood there moments later, why everyone had been telling me I must visit… and I wondered to myself why I had waited so long.

Hydeaway Bay sits at the northern end of the Whitsundays, an easy drive from Airlie Beach or Mackay. Quiet and secluded, the

views are to die for, blue skies and a seemingly endless horizon dotted by green islands in the distance. The sandy beach stretches out before you, big enough to make you feel like you’re the only one on it. You could easily walk just a few metres in either direction and find your own little isolated piece of paradise.

The seclusion does indeed give the bay an island feel and the relaxed charm and character of Montes Reef Resort, where I lunched, only added to the effect. Established in the 1970’s, Montes has on offer just eight beach front bungalows, making this the perfect place to escape for a quiet weekend. For couples needing to get away from wedding planning for a night or two,

to de-stress and remember why you’re getting married in the first place, this would be the place to do it.

After a delicious seafood lunch, disturbed only by the pretty shell I’d picked up earlier on the beach deciding to get up and crawl away, I wandered slowly along the beach. Despite my nervousness about all things that sting in Tropical Queensland waters, it was too gorgeous to resist and so I waded into the pristine waves up to my knees. Ahhh, just like bath water.

1. Decide what your budget is based on what you can afford, not what you want. Handmade lace from a remote village in the foothills of rural Italy will not seem nearly as beautiful when you’ve had to take a mortgage out to pay for it.

2. Choose non-traditional wedding venues where you may not

be required to pay a fee. Think outside the square and choose the beach, a park, a friend’s garden or your own backyard and save yourself some dollars.

3. Have your ceremony and reception at the same venue. You’ll pay one fee instead of two and you’ll save yourself time and money in travel costs.

4. Have a picnic. This can be done in style and not cost a bomb. Throw rugs and hampers in the shade of gorgeous big trees in a local park or gardens. Room for the children to roam, and a casual, relaxed atmosphere, what could be better?

5. Depending on your venue, you may not need to decorate very much, if at all. Venues such as the picnic in the park or in a friend’s garden really need little decoration when the natural surroundings are so beautiful.

6. Book a holiday home. If you want a backyard wedding but your backyard’s not so beautiful, why not book a holiday

home nearby (think Airlie Beach) and have your ceremony and reception there?

7. Sweet treats. Opt for an evening wedding and have a desserts-only reception. Inform your guests of this on your invitations. A fun and delicious way to keep to your budget!

8. Forgo the bubbles. You can pay a lot of dollars for bottles of champers, and all just for a few toasts. Guests can toast with whatever they’re drinking, and their good wishes will still mean just as much!

9. If you’re set on live music, visit your local music school or ask around to find if there are any student bands available. Obviously you’ll need to hear them play first, but you might strike it lucky and have a professional sounding band playing at your reception for a fraction of the cost.

10. Trim the length of your reception. The difference between three hours instead of four or five is significant when you consider how much alcohol can be consumed in that time. Everyone will enjoy themselves just as much, and might even thank you when they wake up with clear heads the next morning!

tongue tied. Lost your speech? Well, it’s lucky you gave a second copy to your Mum, who has it safely tucked away in her purse isn’t it?

BeeR CHeSted One fateful swig of beer missed your mouth and landed on your eggshell blue tie? Soak up as much liquid as you can with a clean white cloth, then blot carefully with 1 part white vinegar/2 parts water until the stain lifts. Rinse with water and speed up the drying process with a hairdryer on low heat, but do so cautiously. Option 2: Have another tie on hand as a backup!

ZiPPeR LetdoWn Every now and again, a faulty zipper will appear and chances are it could be on your wedding day. Zipper won’t stay up? Key rings, everyone has one right? Slide the split ring from a key ring through the zipper pull and over your pants button. Zipper won’t close? Run a bar of soap over the teeth to smooth them so they’ll slide smoothly again.

LoSt tHe RingS?There’s almost no coming back from this one… but, ask your parents or a couple whose marriage you admire if you can use their rings for the ceremony. By choosing people whose relationships you admire, you’ve given some sentiment and meaning to the ceremony… and your new wife may almost forgive you.

BLiSteR BLueS You’ve only worn your new shoes for one hour and you have a blister? If you want to bust your moves on the dance floor later, grab a roll of duct tape! Long distance runners employ this technique all the time. If your blister is just a red spot, tape carefully, ensuring no wrinkles or folds sit on the

blister. Tape securely so it doesn’t move during the day. And if this seems too extreme, send a friend to the pharmacy pronto!

MeASuRe MeASuRe It shouldn’t happen, but sometimes it does. Your thrice measured pants are an inch too short. First of all, check the rest of the party to make sure you haven’t had a mix up. Secondly, if they’re hired, call the supplier immediately, they may be able to provide you with a pair the correct length. Thirdly, who’s the sewer in the family? There’s usually a good hem on dress pants, so anyone handy with a sewing machine or needle can let them down.

HAngoVeR HoRRoR We know, it wasn’t you, the best man made you! Just one beer turned into fifteen and now you have a hangover to rival the movie. Painkillers, rehydrating drinks such as Hydralyte, and Vitamin packed energy boosters like Berocca will ease some of the pain. If you can stomach food, try a banana. Rich in potassium, they are bland enough for even the queasiest stomach and will help replenish the depleted potassium caused by alcohol consumption. And if this doesn’t help? Well, you’re on your own Sunshine!

neRVouS tWitCH Suddenly you’ve got a case of the nerves about standing up in front of all those people, saying your vows, and later, your speech. To be honest, those people actually don’t matter. (Sorry folks, but it’s kind of true...) Seriously, there is only ONE person you have to impress on your wedding day and that is your bride. Your soon to be wife. No one else matters. Focus on her and your nerves will disappear.

While it seems like you boys have the easy end of the deal, with a cruisy morning of golf, a few ales, then getting dressed half an hour before the wedding, this can lead to last minute hiccups that can jeopardise your day and potentially the rest of your married life. Joking! Sort of…

Good preparation is paramount to a successful day, so plan for the unexpected and have extra items on hand, just in case. Make sure you have help in the form of a clever Mum or friend (last minute sewing) and a reliable best man for last minute dashes to the pharmacy. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. Seriously. No one wants to see you walk down the aisle with your zipper down.

Move over sugared almonds and shell shaped chocolates, there’s a new kid on the block and boy is he cool! In the sticky heat that is our climate, nothing cools the soul and calms the hot mind like mint chocolate chip or french vanilla ice cream. And it seems couples are catching onto this with the arrival of ice creams as unique wedding favours or “in-betweeners” – when the ice cream truck rolls up right after the ceremony and hands out cool treats to guests while the wedding party heads off for their photos.

Why not create a little quaint ice cream vendor stand of your own for after the ceremony? Set up a table under a cute gazebo or in the shade and fill mason jars with ice cream or Italian ice and place them in large buckets of ice, bringing them out just as the ceremony ends.

An ice cream buffet in place of a traditional dessert buffet is another delicious idea. Display with a mouth-watering array of toppings, vintage glass jars and spoons, waffle cones or cute cups and let your guests create their own personal sweet concoction.

Another idea is DIY ice cream favours. Put together in a mason jar, they are an adorable keepsake and fun for every guest to make. Your guests will only need ice to complete this recipe.

what you need • Labels – Make your own, get them printed, or print downloadable options• Mason jars• Ribbon or twine• Small zip-lock plastic bags• Liquid coffee creamer mini cups – can be purchased in cartons of 180 from office

supply businesses• Rock salt• Sugar and vanilla powder

instructions• Pour 1 cup of rock salt into the bottom of each jar• Pour 1 tbsp. sugar and 1 tsp vanilla powder into a small zip-lock bag and seal• Place the bag of powder and 8 creamer mini cups in each jar• Print one label with instructions on how to make the ice cream and tie to jar

Instructions for label• Fill the jar ½ with ice and mix with salt• Combine all other ingredients in bag and seal tightly closed • Close lid and shake for 5-8 minutes Finally, create another label with your own personal message and tie to front of jar. Job well done! At the beginning, middle or end of a long hot day, what could be better than a cool treat such as these?

In regions such as ours, heat comes with the territory. For the most part it doesn’t bother us, but when you have to dress up in collar and tie, or silk floor length gown, it can get to you. If you’re planning a wedding in the summer months, here are some tips to help beat the heat.

The ceremony• Setthetimeforyourceremonylaterintheday,evenasunset

or night time wedding. Not only is it romantic, but it’s a lot cooler and there’s no chance of nasty sunburn.

• If theceremonyis inthemiddleof theday,keepitshortsoyou and your guests are not standing in the sun. Or find an outdoor location with plenty of shade.

• Loosen up the dress code. You’re outdoors, possibly in agarden or by the beach, so set your dress code accordingly and tell them to bring their thongs for the beach.

• Ifthere’snoshadeatyourceremonylocation,supplyhandfansand maybe even parasols. These could be your wedding favours, and practical ones to boot. Guaranteed to be used again.

• Haveatablewithwater,icedteasorlemonadesreadilyavailablefor guests. Leave the alcoholic drinks for when everyone’s out of the sun.

• Water,water,water.Don’tbetemptedtodipintothechampagneor beer too early in the day. The heat and alcohol combined could give you a thumping headache that lasts the entire day. Drink plenty of water prior to the day and on the day.

• Haveparasolsforyourweddingparty.Evenifnotusedduringthe ceremony, they’ll provide a welcome respite from the sun during photos.

• Optfora lightandfreshmenuforyourreception.Plentyofsalads and a fresh fruit option for dessert.

• Gents, there is nothing worse than a sunglasses tan at thereception. Use an oil free sunscreen to protect yourself during the ceremony and photos. And jump under the parasols with the girls!

Bride• Whenitcomestoyourbouquetsandfloraldecor,chooseheat

tolerant flowers that will last the day. Succulents are on trend right now and are a perfect choice to beat the heat. Consider adding these into your bouquets. If using a florist, they will be able to advise the most appropriate blooms and will most likely leave your floral décor to the last minute to keep it looking fresh for the ceremony.

• Keep yourself as fresh as a daisy with a dusting of talcumpowder prior to getting dressed. Keep powder, deodorant and a body spray on hand.

• Yourmakeupwillneedstayingpowder,soconsideratrialwithyour makeup artist close to the date of your wedding, so you can ensure it will last and to work out what you will need with you on the day. Powder and oil blotting tissues will be a must.

• Longcurlsarebeautiful,butintheheatofsummertheywillfeel like a woollen scarf wrapped round your neck. The best hairstyles are those that keep your hair up and off your face and neck. Think a soft fishtail, or a loose chignon, or pinned up beachy curls, cool and elegant.

• You’reinlovewithyourweddingheels,butyourhot,swollenandsore feet might not like them very much by the end of the day. Have a pair of cute sandals that complement your dress, so if you really begin to suffer, you can switch shoes and still look glam!

The summer months are beautiful, so it’s understandable why you would choose to marry during them. However, hot and cranky guests and bridal party do not a good wedding make. If you plan ahead and think creatively, your guests and bridal party will thank you and you will be able to keep your cool and enjoy your day.

How to keep the little people happy at your wedding.

As a guest, it can be difficult to relax and enjoy a wedding when the littlest member in your family wants your attention for whatever reason. He is bored, he hates the green puree on his plate, the “angel” sitting next to him is kicking his shin, and when is the cake coming out??? For the bride and groom wanting your guests to enjoy your day as much as you have, keeping their children happy and entertained is key. If your venue doesn’t cater for children, you will need to get creative. While hand held games will keep them entertained for a limited length of time, here are some fun ideas that will get them interacting with others around them and keep them entertained for hours!

CHECKLIST Have items on it the children must complete during the evening.*Count the balloons*Count the people wearing a certain colour*Fold an animal out of your napkin.

ARTWORK DéCORForget the linen, cover the kids’ table in butcher paper and have containers of pens and pencils for them to “graffiti” the tablecloth with!

CUPCAKE CUTIESWhat child doesn’t love creating and eating cupcakes? Get them making their own dessert in the form of ready-made cupcakes with a collection of icings and decorations. Disposable aprons might be a good option here!

PINTSIzED PAPARAzzILeave a few of disposable cameras with them with instructions to photograph a variety of things, eg:

CUTEST CAKE WAITERSOnce the wedding cake is cut and ready to be served, entrust this important task to them. It will give them a sense of pride and involvement in your day.

JUNIOR PHOTO BOOTHOkay, so it’s the normal photo booth, but throw in some cute dress ups the kids will love and you won’t see them all night!

TREASURE HUNTIf your venue allows it, place clues to a treasure hunt around the venue and set them on the task after the formalities have concluded. An outdoor venue would be perfect for this.

FULL OF FUNCreate a little box or suitcase filled with a complete collection of items - the disposable camera, the checklist, some colouring in pens, ready to go cupcake toppings etc. Label it personally for each little guest and see the delight on their cute little faces when they open it and see the contents!

You know when something really funny happens in your day and later on you tell someone about it, only to discover they don’t find it as funny as you did? It’s one of those “you had to be there” moments. And you think to yourself, “If only I had recorded it…”

Often when a large number of people gather together, say for example at a wedding, things happen. Funny things; like the page boy accidentally tripping up the flower girl, or the nervous groom answering “I do” for the bride, or Grandad nodding off in his chair. Heart melting moments; when the bride reaches up to wipe away tears on the groom’s cheek, or glances down quickly to see her Dad smiling proudly up at her. So many moments. The first dance, loving looks and murmurs, the sounds of love and happiness. The quavering voice of the nervous speech maker or the infectious giggles of an amused guest.

So many moments, gone in a flash. If only you had recorded them…

WHAT IS THE qUESTION YOU GET ASKED MOST OFTEN BY GROOMS? Definitely on the day it’s “How do you tie a tie? Can you please help me?” closely followed by “What do I do with this flower thingy?!” (Buttonhole).

WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST WEDDING TREND YOU SAW IN 2013 AND WHAT DO YOU THINK 2014 WIll BRING? The biggest trend we saw last year was vintage themed weddings. I believe this trend will continue throughout the year, however I think we’ll see an increase in opulent cocktail styled weddings, lots of glamour, elaborate centrepieces, and large luxury furniture pieces – think The Great Gatsby.

WHAT’S YOUR FAvOURITE MOMENT WHEN PlANNING A COUPlE’S WEDDING? My favourite part about any wedding is when I finally get to meet the couple. A lot of the time, correspondence is done via email and phone so we don’t get to meet the couple until they arrive in the area. It’s always great to meet the happy couples and see the look of excitement in their eyes.

TIMBER FLOWER BOXES

Source timber from your local recycled timber yard.Cut to equal lengths. These boxes are 12 x 12 x 12cm.Cut base to fit on the inside of the box (once joined together).

While these particular boxes have more complex joins, simpler joins will suffice. Using wood glue and nails to hold securely, join two sides first then the base, followed by the other two sides. Finish by staining in the shade of your choice.

Stencil out desired table numbers. Drill small hole in base for the wire sticks to insert. Stain with same shade as your timber box.

Note: These boxes are not waterproof so jars or vases must be placed inside to hold flowers and water.
