  • Se mueve rápido by Robert NewellBuild BackgroundRead the title to children and talk with them about what the people are doing in the cover photograph. Encourage children to use their knowledge of kinds of transportation to think about the book. Then ask: ¿De qué maneras puede ir rápido la gente?

Introduce the TextGuide children through the text, noting important ideas, and helping with unfamiliar language and vocabulary so they can read the text successfully. Here are some suggestions:

Page 2: Explain that this book tells about a lot of ways to go fast. Remind children that they can use information in the pictures to help them read.

  • ReadAs the children read, observe them carefully. Guide them as needed, using language that supports their problem solving ability.

Respond to the TextPersonal ResponseAsk children to share their personal responses to the book. Begin by asking what they liked best about the book, or what they found interesting.Suggested language: ¿De qué maneras se han movido rápido ustedes?

Ways of ThinkingAs you discuss the text, make sure children understand these teaching points:

Thinking Within the Text Thinking Beyond the Text Thinking About the Text

    • You can go fast on a bike, a skateboard, a motorcycle, a boat, a car, a truck, an airplane, and a race car.

    • If a race car has a fl at tire, it won’t go fast. It won’t go at all.

    • There are many ways to go fast.

    • A fl at tire can stop you from going at all.

    • Many people enjoy the feeling of speed.

    • The writer adds details such as safety tips and how vehicles travel.

    • The photos show people going fast in a variety of methods of transportation.

Choices for SupportConcepts of PrintHelp children understand that a sentence is a group of words with ending punctuation. Point out that the ending punctuation in Se mueve rápido includes periods and exclamation points. Model how to read a sentence ending with an exclamation point.

Phonemic Awareness and Word WorkProvide practice as needed with words and sounds, using one of the following activities:

    • Listening Game Have children listen for words that rhyme. Have children raise their hands if the words rhyme, and keep their hands in their laps if the words do not rhyme. Say pairs of words, for example: bicicleta and camioneta, lancha and plancha, camión and corto, carrera and barrera, avión and camión, auto and avión, etc.

    • Clapping Syllables Have children hear and say syllables in words from the book: patineta, casco, motocicleta, lancha, avión, rápido, lado. Have them clap on each syllable: pa-ti-ne-ta, cas-co, mo-to-ci-cle-ta, lan-cha, a-vión, rá-pi-do, la-do.

    • Finding Letters Have children recognize letters by name and locate them quickly in words. Use letters from the words in the fi rst two pages of the story, including: mira, la, el, bicicleta, va, rápido, patineta, niño, usa, casco, y, rodilleras, para.

  • Writing About ReadingCritical ThinkingRead the directions for children on Hoja reproducible 9.4 and guide them in answering the questions.

RespondingRead aloud the questions at the back of the book and help children complete the activities.

Target Comprehension SkillText and Graphic Features

Target Comprehension Skill Remind children that they can use information

in the pictures to help them read the words in the book. Model how to think about how the pictures can help readers with the text:

    Think Aloud

Puedo usar la información de la fotografía de la página 4 para leer mejor lo que dice la página. Veo a dos personas que están montando en una motocicleta. La primera oración de la página dice: Mira la motocicleta. La última oración dice: Dos personas pueden montar en ella. La información de la foto me ayuda a leer las palabras de la página.

Practice the SkillHave children choose another page in the book and tell how the information in the picture can help them read the words.

Writing PromptRead aloud the following prompt. Have children draw and write their response, using the writing prompt on page 6.

What is your favorite way to go fast? Draw a picture. Show how you like to go fast.

Write why you like to go fast this way.
