READING

In the book of your choice, identify who is telling the story. Is the story being told in 1st

person, 2nd person, or 3rd person?

In your book of choice, identify who is telling the story. How might

the story be different if the story was being told from a different

point of view?

Authors of stories don’t always tell us

everything about a character. What is

something you think a character in your story might like to do? Use your inferring skills!

What is something the main character in your

story did? What conclusions can you

draw by the characters’ actions?

WRITING

Write about the beginning of an

important friendship.

Write a story about a misunderstanding

between yourself and someone else.

Ask someone in your family about a time they got hurt or had

to get stitches.

Write about your most exciting

moment or experience.

SPELLING & VOCABULARY

Are you reading an independent book at

home? Look for words that end in -ology. Did

you know -ology is a suffix that means the

study of?

Practice writing your spelling words in ABC

order.

Try to use some of your spelling words in a conversation with

someone you live with at home.

Write each of your spelling words 3 times

each.

COMPREHENSION & FLUENCY

Ask someone in your house to read to/with you. If this person is older than you, have

them read your favorite book with you.

If they are younger, read their favorite

book.

With the book of your choosing, write at least one questions before you read, while you read, and after you

read.

Using the online library resources, EPIC,

or your personal library at home, pick a

new book that you have not yet read. Try to make it a book you

would not normally pick.

Read for 30 minutes a book of your choosing. If it is nice go outside and pick a comfy spot, get cozy, and dive in!

Harold grunted as he walked into the house. He carried four paper bags in his arms, each one lled to the brim. Suddenly, he tripped and one of the bags fell, spilling oranges, a loaf of bread, and two sticks of butter onto the oor. “At least I didn’t drop the eggs!” he exclaimed.

Each day, before Renee goes to work, she puts on her brown uniform and sturdy work boots. She has to get to work early because a lot of creatures, big and small, are counting on her for their breakfast. Later in the day, she will make sure their habitats are clean. Sometimes she gets dirty at work, but she enjoys seeing all the people who come to visit, peeking through fences and windows as she works.

Patrick arrived home from school with a grin. He burst through the front door and ran into the living room where he saw boxes wrapped in shiny paper and balloons tied to a chair. On the counter sat a chocolate cake with eleven candles. He reached for a taste of the frosting, but his mother scolded, “We have to sing to you before eating the cake!”

Lucy sighed happily as she curled into a ball and licked her fur. After a long afternoon of laying in the sun, she was happy to be snuggled up on her soft bed. She purred contentedly as she closed her eyes, ready for a nap. Suddenly, she heard a buzzing noise. Her eyes snapped open and her ears twitched. She spotted a y landing nearby. Lucy watched it carefully for a moment and then, POUNCE! She caught it!

Where was Harold before he got home? How do you know?

Where does Renee work? How do you know?

What is Patrick celebrating? How do you know?

Who is Lucy? How do you know?

Bees are insects that live all over the world, with the exception of Antarctica. There are more than 20,000 different types! People started keeping bees for their honey at least 4,000 years ago. The honeybee is the only insect that produces food that is eaten by people. Today, beekeepers raise honeybees for their delicious honey and also for the beeswax that they make. Beeswax can be used to make candles.

Bees get all of their food from flowers. The flowers hold a sweet liquid called nectar. They also contain pollen. Pollen is small like pieces of dust. A honeybee visits around 100 flowers during one collection trip. While bees are buzzing around from flower to flower, gathering pollen to take back to their hive, they spill some of it along the way. That is actually a very good thing. When the bees drop the pollen from one flower onto another, it allows the flower to make seeds. Those seeds can then grow to make new flowers. That means bees are very important to keep our environment in balance.

Helpful Honeybees

Who raises honeybees for their honey and beeswax?

What is the sweet liquid in a flower called?

When did people first start keeping bees for their honey?

Where do bees get all their food from?

Why are bees important to our environment?

However, the man who began as"antislavery" eventually issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed all slaves in those states thatwere in rebellion. He vigorously supported the 13th Amendment which abolished slavery throughout theUnited States, and, in the last speech of his life, he recommended extending the vote to African Americans.

In 1820, Missouri wanted to join the union as a slave state. This would cause slave states to outnumber free states, which could create an imbalance of power in Congress. They came up with The Missouri Compromise: Missouri would be allowed to join as a slave state, Maine joined as a free state, and nothing above the Arkansas Territory could join the union as a slave state.

Above is a map of the free states and slave states in the U.S. in 1820. Examine it and answer the questions below.1. How does it look different from the map you see today?_______________________________________________________________

2. How many states and territories allowed slavery in 1820?_______________________________________________________________

3. How many did not?_______________________________________________________________

4. Is Indiana a free state or a slave state?_______________________________________________________________

5. Based on the paragraph, would a state in the Oregon Territory be allowed to join as a slave state?_______________________________________________________________

Your skeletal system’s main purpose it to support your body. Without bones, you wouldn’t be able to move. Bones also help to protect your organs. Your spine is the main support in your body. It is made of twenty-six bones. Your skull protects your brain and your ribs protect your heart and lungs. The pelvis helps to protect the organs in your abdomen. The bones in your arms and legs are long and strong. There are smaller bones in your hands, wrists, feet, and ankles. Your body has 206 bones and each has a special job. Bones are alive because they are made of living cells. This is how they are able to grow. The spongy material in the middle of your bones is called bone marrow, which helps make new blood cells.

1.  The skeletal system _____________ your body.

2.  The __________ protects your brain, the __________ protects your heart and lungs, and the __________ protects your abdominal organs.

3.  There are _______________ bones in your body.

4.  Bones are made of _______________ cells.

Your body has more than 650 muscles. This is almost half of your weight! The muscular system works with the skeletal system to help you move. Unlike other tissues in your body, your muscles are able to contract and relax. The muscles that bend your joints work in pairs. When one of these muscles contracts, its partner relaxes. Then, they switch. There are three different types of muscles in your body: skeletal, smooth, and cardiac. Skeletal muscles connect to bones and help you move. You are able to control these muscles. Smooth muscles are muscles you can’t control. When you swallow food, smooth muscles move food towards your stomach. It also carries blood around your body. Cardiac muscle works all of the time and helps your heart beat.

1.  The three types of muscles are the _______________, _______________, _______________.

2.  Muscles that bend your joints work in _______________.

3.  There are _______________ muscles in your body.

4.  Skeletal muscles connect muscle to _______________.

The nervous system controls everything that you do. To do its job, your brain uses nerves to communicate to every cell. Electrical signals move through the nerves and carries messages between your brain and other parts of your body. Thousands of nerves are in your spinal cord, which runs down your spine. Nerves branch off from your spinal cord to reach every part of your body. The brain has three main parts. The cerebrum is what controls thinking, feeling, sight, and hearing. In the cerebellum, muscles work together to help you walk smoothly and keep your balance. The brain stem controls many body functions such as breathing and pumping blood.

1. Your brain uses _______________ to communicate to every cell.

2.  Nerves carry _______________ between your brain and other parts of your body.

3. The _______________ helps you walk smoothly and keep your balance.

The center of your circulatory system is your heart. It has a big job to do because it pumps blood to every cell in your body. Your heart never stops beating. The heart pumps blood to your lungs first to get oxygen. Then it pumps this oxygen- rich blood all over your body. Blood moves away from your heart through arteries. This blood is bright red because it contains oxygen. After your blood gives oxygen to the cells in your body, it picks up carbon dioxide and other wastes that your cells make. Then blood will move back to your heart through your veins. The blood in your veins is darker because it does not carry any oxygen.

1.  What organ is the center of your circulatory system? _______________

2.  Where does the blood go after leaving the heart? _______________ 3.  Blood in your arteries is __________ in color because it

contains oxygen. 4. Blood moves back to your heart through _____________.

The digestive system breaks down the food you eat and turns it into energy. Food enters your body through your mouth. When you chew the food, saliva mixes with it and starts to break it down. Then your food moves down a long tube called the esophagus when you swallow. The esophagus goes to the stomach, where your stomach muscles squeeze the food to break it down into smaller pieces. Chemicals in your stomach mix with the food to break it down even more. Then the food will move into the small intestine. The walls of the small intestine absorb the nutrients from the food. It enters the bloodstream and to your cells to nourish them. The food that was not absorbed moves to your large intestine. The water from this food is absorbed into your body. The rest of the food keeps moving and exits the body.

1.  The digestive system _______________ down the food you eat and turns it into _______________.

2.  The _______________ moves food from your mouth to your stomach.

3.  The muscles and chemicals in your _____________ break the food into smaller pieces.

Weathering and Erosion Weathering and erosion work together to change the environment. In nature, large

things get broken down into smaller things. This can take a really long time, but

sometimes it happens fast! Keep reading to find out more about weathering and

erosion.

Weathering is a natural process that breaks apart or changes rock.

Some of the natural forces that cause weathering include heat,

water, wind, and living things. There are three main types of

weathering: physical, biological, and chemical. Weathering, unlike

erosion, breaks things up into smaller pieces but does not move

them away.

Erosion is what moves the soil and tiny rocks that weathering leaves behind. The wind

and water carry the sediment (small pieces of rock or sand) to a new location. Erosion

can happen because gravity pulls soil downhill. It can also happen because of strong

weather, like rain or wind. Erosion is a very slow process. It happens over many, many

years.

Color the process (erosion or weathering) that caused changes to the rock. Next,

justify your answer!

Name

The Earth’s crust and the top of the mantle have about 20

tectonic plates, which are like puzzle pieces covering the

Earth. These plates are always moving and bumping into

each other. We call the edges of the plates "plate

boundaries," which are made up of faults. These faults

are where most of the world’s earthquakes occur. As the

plates move, the edges get stuck because they are not

smooth, but the rest of the plate keeps moving. When the

force is too much, it breaks free and that causes an earthquake. A seismograph is a special

instrument that records earthquakes. The base of the seismograph is on the ground, and over that a

weight hangs from a string. When there is an earthquake the base shakes with the ground but the

weight does not, and it draws a line to show how much the ground shook. Scientists use the

seismograms to measure how big each earthquake is.

1. About how many tectonic plates are there?

2. Where do earthquakes take place?

3. Describe what causes an earthquake.

4. What is a seismograph? How does it work?

Natural Hazards (Tsunamis) An earthquake under the ocean can cause a tsunami. A

tsunami is a series of giant waves. When these waves hit

the shore, they can cause a lot of damage. Most tsunamis

happen in the Pacific Ocean.

Architects design special houses to resist tsunamis. The

main floors of the houses are raised above the ground.

That way they will be higher than a tsunami’s waves. The

ground floors of some houses have large doors. You can

open the doors to let the waves flow through.

Architects need to know about forces. They need to know about how a building’s structure

will react to forces.

They need to know about weather and climate. They need to know where earthquakes and

tsunamis are common. There is no way to make a building completely safe from a natural

hazard. But architects can make buildings safer. Safety features can increase the amount of

time a person has to exit the building. They can also reduce damage to the building.

Natural Hazards (Volcanoes)

How do we know if a volcano is about to erupt?

There are two main reasons why scientists want to predict

when a volcano might erupt. The first reason should be

completely obvious; scientists want to predict volcanic eruptions

to save the lives of people who might be affected by the

eruption. The second reason is to learn more about what happens

before, during and after a volcanic eruption. Billions of years ago

volcanoes were much more active. Now major volcanic eruptions

are rare occurrences and scientists need to have equipment at

the volcano at the right time to study more about why and how

volcanoes erupt.

The earliest way of predicting when a volcano might erupt was to study its history.

Volcanoes tend to erupt in a pattern over time. For example, Mount St. Helens in Washington

State stays active for 10 to 20 years and then will not erupt again for about 120 years. Some

volcanoes erupt every 400 years or so.

Recently scientists have developed modern instruments that measure the earth’s

movement in order to predict earthquakes. Earthquake tremors often occur before a volcano

erupts. Measuring earthquake tremors and earthquakes is called seismic monitoring. News

reports announce earthquakes using the Richter scale which measures earthquake activity.

The higher the number on the Richter scale means a worse earthquake or tremor. Geologists

place seismic instruments on and near volcanoes and constantly measure seismic activity.

Geologists also use ground-deformation instruments which measure a different kind of

ground movement in a volcano. These instruments measure movement that could be caused

by shifting magma below the surface of the earth which might erupt as lava. Some volcanoes

have a central crater where the next eruption is likely to occur. This is a good place for

ground-deformation instruments. Other scientists use GPS (global positioning system) to

calculate the movement inside volcanic craters.

Scientists have had good success predicting eruptions using the latest in technology.

1. If scientists know when a volcano will erupt they can

a. Warn the public of danger

b. Prepare to study the eruption to learn more about volcanoes

c. Both a and b

d. None of the above

2. Studying the history of a volcano and its eruptions will

a. Accurately predict when the volcano will erupt again

b. Predict what year it will erupt again

c. Give an idea about when it might erupt again

d. Not provide any information about the next eruption

3. Ground-deformation instruments are valuable because they measure

a. The heat inside the volcano

b. The gases coming from the volcano

c. The amount of lava coming from the volcano

d. The movement of magma below the surface
