SANIBEL COMMUNITY ASSOC.The popular monthly buffet dinners of the Sanibel C o m m u n i t y
Association verify the fact that more people are staying on the Islandyear round. In May members and guests exceeded 65 with hosts ElsieMalone, Priscilla Murphy and Tom and Mary Nix ably assisted by ElsieMalone J r . and Riley and Donna Black.
In June more than 45 joined the fun with Mr. and Mrs. W a l l a c eCousins and Mr. and Mrs. Earl Skinner hosting. Mr. Cousins had creat-ed a space motif for the officers table featuring earth, moon and lunarcapsule in orbit around the moon.
The July dinner was hosted by Mr. & Mrs. Charles Muller and Mr.and Mrs. Isadore Burrell. Large shells and shell ceramics were filledwith flowers and colorful croton leaves on all the tables. More than 50members and guests were 'aboard' for a lovely evening.
Following dinner a brief business meeting was conducted by vicepresident, Marshall Holtz. Most chairmen for the 1970 Sanibel ShellFair have been named. Bob and Jean Aycock will handle exhibits, JeanCulpepper is already at work on the brochure, Mary Nix, shell table,Ed Webb will again have the live exhibit, Faye Muller and Holly Moorethe Driftwood booth, Wilb and Dina Snyder the art exhibit and MarshallTabacchi will again serve as traffic chairman.
The Board of Directors has been very active in efforts to assure
better electric service to the islands and letters had been receivedfrom Senator Spessard Holland and Congressman James Haley who areboth contacting R.E.A. on our behalf.
Bob Dormer presented a resume covering efforts of the board ofdirectors toward bringing a doctor to the Islands.

These pictures were taken near the Sanibel Gulf beach by Mrs. WillieGlass. This is only a fraction of the trash removed by Lions, Boy Scouts, and Island volunteers during the recent cleanup. Trash cans and holderswere put in place two years ago by the Sanibel Community AssociationImprovement Committee. Notice that one can is missing — and thatthere were several near misses by the can standing,, Mrs. Glass droveher jeep during the cleanup and helped load it many times with the beer
cottles and other trash collected. She more than held her own withthe men and boys cleaning rubbish from the roadsides and beaches

ISLANDERCANOE TRIP ON THE
SANIBEL RIVER
"Happenings" are where youfind or make them whether it beon Sanibel or Timbuctu. Recentlytwo Sanibel residents went on anadventure right here at home andcame away richer for the exper-ience and with a real story to tell.Mrs. Forrest (Julie) Miller ofDinkens Bayou and Mrs. Morris-on (Kay) Casparis, of Blind PassCottages rented a canoe for a tourof the Sanibel River, a trip thathad held a fascination for themboth for several years. Beingrelative newcomers to the islandthey asked Jeanne Hopwood to goalong as guide to help identify allthey hoped to see of the naturalflora and fauna of the area. Allthree were completely delightedwith the abundance of birds andwildlife they encountered. BlueHerons, Black and Yellow Crown-ed Night Herons, Snowy Egrets,Gallinules, nesting Anhingas anda Florida Banded Water snake, quite harmless, coiled around abranch of mangrove peacefullysunning himself. Everywherethey were close enough to reachout and touch these creatures ofthe wild.
They were so enthused abouttheir adventure that Julie wentright home and wrote their ex-periences into stgryrform andasked Jeanne to illustrate themost telling incidents which theysent off to the Florida Naturalist, the publication of the Florida Au-dubon Society. If you have seenthis July issue of the Naturalistyou will be able to enjoy that sametrip throught Julie's words andJeanne's pen starting on page 126.
But if you are of a more ven-' turesome spirit you can rent acanoe for yourself and drift lei-surely on the Sanibel River toyour own rendezvous with natureand can reach out to touch thenatural beauties hidden off thenormal tourists lanes. No tripis ever the same in the e v e rchanging world of Nether Natureshideaway in the interior of Sani-bel.
We do thank Julie, Kay andJeanne for sharing all these sim-ple pleasures with us.

TO SANIBEL VIA CUBA
Mr. & Mrs. William Horstand their daughter Laurie, 13,from Hummelstown, Pa. wereprobably the first visitors toarrive to Sanibel via Cuba. Hereis the story.
On Saturday, June 28, theHorsts drove to Baltimore tocatch a flight to Miami and thenplanned to rent a car and driveto the Colony. 20 minutes out ofMiami the pilot announced calmlythere would be asidetriptoCuba0
Shortly afterwards they a r -rived in a very dismal airportand were ushered off the planeto a waiting room. All names, addresses, ages, and occupationswere written down. Then thepeople were directed to anotherroom where they waited for twohours.
Everyone was friendly exceptthe military. The soldiers weresent on board the plane to r e -trieve the hyjacker who wasdrunk and traveling first class.
The people were all taken up-stairs to a restaurant. B e a nsalad, cucumbers, home friedpotatoes in grease, one olive, and some unidentifiable meat wasserved. The food was awful andthe odor in the building was evenworse.
After dinner, free cigarettes, cigars, matches, beer, and cokewas served. (Where do they getthe Coke?) The U.S. Governmentpays for all this, naturally.
The soldiers made a mess ofthe plane finding all the camerasand destroying all the film.
Returning to Miami, every-one went through customs havingleft the states and had to fill outa form for the FBI.
The Horsts rented a car at1:00 p.m. and finally made it toThe Colony by 5:30. (They gotlost on the wayo)
Karen Marie Orloff, thedaughter of Mr. & Mrs. ArthurE. Orloff, was married on June22 to Dr. Kenneth Lawrence Kap-lan.
Dr. Kaplan is on the facultyof Tufts Medical School.
The couple will make theirhome in Boston.

NIHILISTS NOTE
The declension from libert-inism to anarchy can be rapid.
After periods of radical andprotracted change, when it be-comes obvious that modificationis not necessarily panacea andthat diversity often breeds onlyinsecurity, there develops an in-stinct for authority and for therefuge that total submission af-fords. Quoted from RICHELIEUby O'Connor.
