Chris Cashman’s childhood aspirations always di ered a little from friends’, which

should come as no surprise given his namesake.

“Some kids have that fantasy making that three-point shot as the buzzer expires, or the touchdown, or whatever,” said the 1996 gradu-ate of Eastlake in Sammamish and long-time Issaquah resident. “My fantasy had always been right before ‘Almost Live’ starts, and I’m stand-ing right behind that door ready to come out.”

Chris, son of local actor and comedian Pat Cashman, will nally get to live out a version of his dream in January when he, his dad and comedian John Keister launch “ e 206” — a television show described as similar to the for-mer skit show “Almost Live,” but at the same time, very di erent.

“We keep insisting this is a di erent thing,” Chris Cashman said. “It’s going to be similar humor, but it’s not going to look the same.”

With 70,000 people, Auburn is now the largest city in the district. e district also in-cludes Issaquah, Sammamish, North Bend, Wenatchee and Ellensburg.

Even though Issaquah resi-dents tend to be more liberal, like their Eastside neighbors, the change won’t a ect them much, because their congress-man, Dave Reichert, a former police o cer, remains in o ce. Cherry, but stories say he was orphaned, raised by a black family in the South, and never had a family.

Anderson had the violin for several years, in its original purple lined case, when he decided it would get better care in the hands of the museum.

In the ve years since Julie Hunter has been the museum’s collections man-ager, it’s the most signi cant artifact she’s received.

e year started o on a sad note for students in Sammamish with the news that school resource o cer Stan Chapin unexpectedly died while preparing for a day of monitoring the Inglewood Junior High and Eastlake High School campuses.

Hundreds showed up a er school Jan. 31 to remember their friend. Students brought owers, pictures and other items, gathering in front of the campus at the exact spot o cer Chapin would greet them each morning.

FEBRUARYClaire ompson, a

20-year-old Sammamish native was fatally shot early Sunday, Feb. 12, in Red-mond.

A bullet pierced a nearby wall and struck ompson in the neck as she talked to her friend Mikaela Boyd, at a house party in the Educa-tion Hill area.

Cornelius J. De Jong IV, a 21-year-old Redmond resident, faced rst-degree manslaughter charges in connection with the fatal shooting. Police say De Jong acted recklessly when he red what he thought was an unloaded gun, according to King County Prosecutor’s O ce charging documents. e charg-ing papers said De Jong appeared drunk a er the incident and refused a breath test.

e witness who called to report the shooting told dispatchers, “My best friend shot a girl in the house, he was drunk,” the charging documents said.

De Jong had a concealed-weapons permit, which was issued by the Redmond Police.

De Jong pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaugh-ter and was sentenced to 27 months in prison by Judge eresa Doyle Sept 17.

MARCHRep. Dave Reichert

moved his o ce to Is-

saquah a er Congressional redistricting pushed him from Mercer Island and Bellevue. e Republican and six of his sta members use the space on Southeast 56th Street at the Samma-mish View o ce building.

APRIL e Sammamish City

Council passed a new solic-iting ordinance, requiring anyone going door-to-door to obtain a license from the city. e ordinance also requires criminal back-ground checks, limits hours of door-to-door solicita-tion and requires vendors to obey signs that clearly display “no soliciting.”

Since its inception, numer-ous cases of people soliciting without a license have been reported to the Sammamish Police Department.

An elderly Sammamish couple were scammed out of $90,000 when a caller, claiming to be their grand-son, said he’d been in a DUI car accident and needed money for bail. e couple said the man sounded exactly like their grandson and they didn’t hesitate to send the money. e scam has reoccured numerous times throughout the year with several other Sam-mamish residents making similar reports.

A er 11 years of work, the Washington Trails Association connected its High Point trailhead, which is just East of Issaquah, to Duthie Hill Park on the Plateau.

Mike Owens, chief crew leader for the project, led volunteers up the trail four days a week a few months of the year. WTA estimated that its volunteers put in about 40,000 hours on the trail.

Much of the Grand Ridge Trail was built from scratch, allowing King County to construct a stronger route with better drainage.

 e bulk of the route

swirls around the Issaquah Highlands, before jutting up to the popular mountain bike park.

Seventy percent of vot-ers supported a $219 mil-lion bond for the Issaquah School District.

e district needed a supermajority vote, 60 percent, to win. e bond focused on replacing aging schools. In the past two de-cades the district has gone through extensive growth. As a result, the bonds were focused on new schools to accommodate all the new students.

Issaquah Middle School will switch campuses with Clark Elementary, and they’ll both be rebuilt. Sunny Hills Elementary in Sammamish, which relies on 11 portables, will get a completely new space.

e bond also puts in $12 million for remodeling and adding covered stadiums at all three high schools.

Five weeks a er the state began accepting online bids for its liquor stores, the Sammamish and Issaquah locations were sold for a combined $451,000.

e Sammamish store, located at 510 228th Ave. NE, was claimed by local resident Jin Kim with a bid of $200,100, while Leon Capelouto of Seattle won the Issaquah store, at 1175 NW Gilman Blvd., with a bid of $251,000. Capelouto also bought the West Seattle store.

e Washington State Li-quor Control Board began auctioning its stores March 15 to meet the requirements of voter-approved initiative 1183, which required the state to get out of the liquor business.

e WSLCB awarded 121 bidders license application rights for the 167 state-run stores.

o cers with Automatic Ex-ternal De brillators. AEDs are portable electronic devices that help manage life-threatening cardiac complications.

In a partnership with King County Emergency Services, the King County Sheri ’s O ce distributed 53 of the devices between all its o ces at the begin-ning of the year.

Sammamish received two of those AEDs through a grant and has since purchased 15 more at $940 each. e city, which approved funds for the de-vices in its budget, recently ordered ve more. By the end of June all of Samma-mish’s 22 commissioned sta had AEDs.

MAYSammamish resident

Iva Johnson celebrated her 105th birthday on May 6. When asked her secret to longevity, Johnson replied, “I don’t know how I’ve come that far, to get this old. I don’t have a secret.”

Eastlake senior Monisha Gulabani was selected as the lone female Presidential Scholar from Washington state. Most impressively, the 4.0 student, was the second in her family to achieve the distinction. Her sister, Anisha, won the award in 2008.

JUNESammamish’s 115-year-

old Reard-Freed House was moved to at Southeast Eighth Street Park. e his-toric building was hauled to its new permanent location in the wee hours of the morning June 3 by a large atbed semi truck. e building is currently undergoing renovation and there are hopes it can serve as a meeting hall and serve other community needs.

e King County Sher-i ’s O ce o cially opened its new Eastside precinct June 8 on the top oor of Sammamish City Hall. e

o ce was a consolidation of its Maple Valley and Ken-more o ces, expected to save the county $400,000 a year. Sammamish is leasing the top oor to the county for $104,000 a year.

A er 19 months of work, 6,000 volunteer hours and 50,000 pieces of stained glass, Sammamish’s Good Samaritan Episco-pal Church unveiled its 200-square-foot mosaic. e piece of artwork was placed on the reredos — Latin for “wall behind the altar.”

JULYA 52-year-old Issaquah

woman accidentally drove through the front window of the Pine Lake Starbucks when her foot, which was in a protective boot, slipped o the brake pedal and inadvertently hit the accelerator. ree people sustained minor injuries. e driver also received a minor burn from the airbag deployment.

Longtime community leader Maureen McCarry died from Lou Gehrig’s dis-ease July 4, just 18 months a er stepping down from Issaquah City Council. She was 62.

McCarry was known for her work conserving land and preventing the controversial southeast bypass project. Her last vote on City Council was to con-

serve Park Point, a compli-cated deal she spearheaded. A few months later, she won the city’s prestigious Ruth Kees award for her work with the environment.

McCarry was rst ap-pointed to council in 1998, where she chaired the commission that oversaw the Highlands and Talus development agreements. She didn’t run for an elec-tion until 2005, and won a second term in 2009.

Much to the chagrin of some members of the Washington State Repub-lican party, retired Sen. Cheryl P ug, endorsed Democrat Mark Mullet for her seat, and criticized the decision to name Dino Rossi as the position’s care-taker through the election.

P ug quit her re-election campaign the day a er candidate lings closed, giving little opportunity for a strong Republican to take her seat. She retired to take a position with the State Growth Management Hear-ings board, an appoint-ment from Gov. Christine Gregoire.

AUGUSTSammamish residents

living on the north end of town had to deal with a stinky situation when Waste Management drivers went on strike, delaying pick up

for nearly a month. e strike nally ended in early August.

SEPTEMBERFor the rst time in the

Lake Washington School District’s 68-year history, the district shi ed to four-year high schools, middle schools and kindergar-ten through h grade elementary schools. With the temporary housing of the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math School, Eastlake High School had 2,000 students on its campus to start the year — up from 1,250 the previous year.

A er nearly two years of waiting, the Samma-mish Muslim Association received approval from the City of Sammamish to go ahead with the conversion of a 2,900-foot home into a prayer center with 44

parking spaces just north of Pine Lake.

Students at Skyline High School were asked to stay home from school Sept. 20 a er an anony-mous Internet threat was made. A boy, who would eventually be identi ed as a 16-year-old former Skyline student living in Edmonds, said he would enter the commons area and open re with a submachine gun until he ran out of ammo or was killed by police. e suspect was arrested nearly two weeks a er he made the threats based on tips from students.

NOVEMBERSammamish voters ap-

proved an advisory mea-sure to move forward with a $30 million community and aquatic center, with 53.65 percent in favor and 46.35 percent against. e City Council has yet to vote

on the project, in which the city would contribute $25 million and the YMCA would contribute $5 million and operate the facility.

Lake Sammamish ko-kanee salmon returned to local streams in full force, sporting some of their largest numbers in decades. Wally Pereyra, whose lived along Ebright Creek, said it was the biggest run he’s ever seen, by far. Members of King County’s Depart-ment of Natural Resources credit the strong run to the Issaquah Hatchery’s supple-mentation program.

Issaquah business owner, Democrat Mark Mullet, declared victory over his opponent Brad To , a er a contentious race for the District 5 Sen-ate seat, formerly occupied by Republican Cheryl P ug,

Mere days a er Adam Lanza gunned down 20 little kids and six adults in Newtown, Conn., the National Ri e Association stepped before the

public – and managed to make things worse. e cure for deranged gunmen shooting our kids,

according to Wayne LaPierre, the NRA’s chief executive o cer, is to have armed police o cers in every school.

According to one gure we saw, there are more than 100,000 public schools in this country. Another source says the average cost of putting an armed police o cer at every school doorway is about $110,000 per o cer a year. LaPi-erre says the NRA is ready and willing to train volunteers to stand guard at the schoolhouse door. But being trained doesn’t equate to professional. If we want both – and, of course, we would – that means police.

Even if the country were to follow LaPierre’s suggestion, how do we protect gatherings of people at other locations? Do we station armed police o cers throughout our shop-ping malls? How about at public libraries?

While there are many things we can do to help prevent such tragedies as in Newtown, the rst step to deal with guns, particularly those that possess magazines with large numbers of bullets that make it easy for someone to go on a killing spree.

As we said last week, we’re not calling for an end to the Second Amendment. But there does have to be a reason-able discussion of how to make this country safer. at has to start with the root of the problem – guns and the obscene killing power that some of them possess.

WE’LL DRINK TO THISStarbucks has come up with a good idea to rev-up

interest in the looming “ scal cli .” It wants its employ-ees at Washington, D.C., cafes to write the words “Come Together” on cups for drink orders to push lawmakers to nd a solution.

Last year, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz asked other CEOs to stop making campaign contributions to politi-cians until they dealt with the country’s debt ceiling.

Maybe Starbucks should deliver some double- or triple-shot lattes to representatives and senators to keep them going until they solve the mess.

BY TONY REHNBetween 2006-2008, drowsy drivers contributed to 77

(4.5 percent) of fatal crashes in Washington state, accord-ing to the state Department of Transportation. And nation-ally, drowsy driving causes more than 100,000 crashes a year, according to the National Highway Tra c Safety Association.

Many of these tragedies are avoidable. e Washing-ton State Patrol recently shared some tips to help prevent drowsy driving:

■ Get a good night’s sleep before hitting the road■ Take a break every two hours or 100 miles to refresh■ Use the buddy system to keep you awake and share

driving chores■ Avoid alcohol and medications that cause drowsiness

as a side e ect■ Avoid driving when you would normally be sleepingIf you drive over the mountain passes or any other icy

road, follow these tips:■ Do not use cruise control.■ Carry chains. ■ If you nd yourself behind a snowplow, stay behind it

until it is safe to pass. A snowplow driver has a limited eld of vision. Stay back 15 car lengths until you’re sure it is safe

to pass or until the plow pulls o the road.■ Keep a basic winter survival kit in your vehicle that

includes ashlight, batteries, blanket, snacks, water, gloves, boots and rst-aid kit.

Auto manufacturers such as Ford now o er features to assist drivers in staying safe. For example, at Evergreen Ford, the new Fusion has a Lane Keeping Technology that can warn drivers, through chimes, lights and vibrations, if they are dri ing out of their lane. However, these types of advances do not take the place of having drivers follow safe practices.

said. “We realized, like it or not, we now have a show, or at least an expec-tation of a show.”

The short trailer picked up thousands of hits on YouTube and spread quickly through Face-book and Twitter. When a special live teaser show in Seattle sold out within minutes, they knew they had something.

Heavyweight spon-sors like Alaska Airlines and Northwest Cadillac hopped on board as well as the former home of “Almost Live,” KING-TV, which will air the first episode of “The 206” Jan. 5, following “Saturday Night Live.”

Cashman said the show will have many features “Almost Live” had, in that it will poke fun at surrounding communi-ties and hot-button local issues. He noted towns have changed from what they used to be, but that is going to make it fun.

“Ballard is hip now,” Cashman said. “When ‘Almost Live’ was on the air, Ballard was a place people were getting their hips replaced.”

The large difference for the new show will lie in its appearance and cast size. Instead of giant cameras, editing suites and televi-sion studios, the show will be shot on a much smaller scale in an old Bellevue firehouse off of 148th Av-enue Southeast. The crowd will circle around the cast as they perform skits — an idea Cashman said he got from watching the BBC show “Top Gear.”

“When you go there, you are part of the show, you will be on the show,” he said. “You will be seen, nose-picking and all.”

Cashman is excited to see where the journey takes him, his dad and Keister in the coming months.

“As silly as it sounds, we feel like it’s almost a way to give back,” he said. “People want to laugh at themselves, their neigh-borhood and their jobs. This is an opportunity to rekindle something that was really special because it was Northwest.”

It’s also an opportunity for Cashman to live out a dream once thought lost.

who endorsed Mullet. Republican Chad Magendanz, former Is-

saquah School Board President, prevailed over his opponent, David Spring, for the Position 2 in the District 5 house race.

In District 45, Roger Goodman prevailed over Joel Hussey for Position 1 in the house race, and Larry Springer beat Jim Thatcher for Position 2.

DECEMBERAfter five years of meetings, contemplation

and reflection, the Central Issaquah Plan will be moving forward.

The CIP is a long-term (30 year) plan to turn what is now a collection of impervious surfaces and strip malls into a vibrant urban area that will include housing, businesses that will bring jobs, and rapid transit.

The area of the CIP is the 1,100 acre com-mercial core, excluding Front Street, that sur-rounds Interstate 90. The area includes about 90 percent of the city’s commercially zoned land.

The plan limits building height to 125-feet. The entire area will be encircled with what has been tagged the “green” or “emerald necklace,” a series of bike and pedestrian trails starting at Lake Sammamish State Park, extending around the CIP back to the lake, with con-nections to trails on Cougar, Squak and Tiger Mountains.

Lakeside Development, which owns 120 acres adjacent to the Issaquah Highlands, got the green light from the Issaquah City Council for the zoning to be changed from mineral resources to urban village at the Dec. 17 city council meeting.

The Lee family has operated a family-owned mining business on the property for 58 years.

Lakeside’s property is also a transfer of devel-opment rights receiving site, one of the largest in the greater Seattle area. As it stands, 700 residential units are possible for the site, but us-ing the TDR, an additional 500 units could be added for a total of 1,200 units.

The parcel will be divided into seven different neighborhoods, each required to have some sort of community space.

The City of Sammamish renamed the new entrance to Eastlake High School, at the inter-section of Northeast Eighth Street and 233rd Ave. N.E., “Stan Chapin Way,” in honor of the the long-time resource officer who passed away in January. Nearly 200 community members showed up to the dedication ceremony Dec. 18, including Stan’s wife Sue and three children, Ryan, Scott and Bethany.

e more things change, the more they stay the same on the Issaquah-Sammamish sports scene.

2012 brought more championships, inspirational stories and once again made student-athletes and local residents into heroes.

Male Athlete of the Year - Max Browne, Skyline football

e Skyline senior cemented his place in program his-tory with a second straight state title and national player of the year honors from a handful of outlets, including Gatorade, a er throwing for more than 4,500 yards and 49 touchdowns against only ve interceptions. e most proli c passer in state history is headed to USC to continue

his career and education with the Trojans a er leading his team to a 14-0 record.

Female Athlete of the Year- Audrey Thomas, Issaquah girls soccer

omas was named 4A KingCo conference player of the year for the second straight season and took her team all the way to the state title game with 16 goals and 11 assists.

Story of the Year- Paci c Crest Trail thru-hikers

2,650 miles made up the journey of a lifetime for the two Issaquah High School grads, who decided to hike from Mexico to Canada along the Paci c Crest Trail. e two began the trip together before parting ways and eventu-ally rejoining and faced bears, snowstorms and 10,000 feet changes in elevation along the way.

Inspirational Story of the Year- “Out of Tragedy”

Ian Crouch and Tyler White, friends and teammates on the Skyline wrestling team, will be forever connected a er both of their mothers were diagnosed with cancer. Even in tragedy, the two families and the wrestling program they dedicated countless hours to helped ease the pain.

Team of the Year- Ben and Cooper Lane

When Ben Lane, a longtime Captain with Eastside Fire & Rescue found out his young son Cooper had in amma-

tory bowel disease, he knew he wanted to bring awareness and help as many children as possible. He did that and more with Team Challenge, an organization he joined to help raise money for kids like Cooper, and raised $1,200 while running the Boston Marathon.

Humanitarian recognition- Athletes for Kids

In 2001, Ken and Liz Moscaret were looking for a way to connect their son with his peers, a process that was made more di cult by his Tourette’s Syndrome. e result was Athletes for Kids, a Sammamish-based organization that connects prep athletes from local high schools with devel-opmentally or physically disabled youth in the area. e program has given countless youngsters in the area a new perspective and made heroes of local athletes.

Comeback Story of the Year- Pat Beecher, blind golfer

It wasn’t easy for Pat Beecher to deal with losing his sight to a pair of genetic ocular conditions. But thanks to golf, the transition is more manageable. Beecher, an Army veteran, was dealing with increasingly debilitating isola-tion a er his sight cost him a driver’s license and much of his independence before some urging from his cohorts at the VA hospital showed him getting on the course can be a life-changing experience.

Game (s) of the Year- Skyline vs. Issaquah in girls soccer 4A state title and Eastlake over Skyline soccer in boys 4A state title

e 4A state soccer tournaments were for local bragging rights and a state title in the spring and fall, as Eastlake topped Skyline 2-0 in the boys championship game before the Spartans picked-o rival Issaquah 1-0 in girls soccer.

Skyline celebrated a couple of huge state championships this past fall with the football team claiming the program’s seventh state championship and the girls soccer team winning its fourth title in the last ve years. FILE PHOTOS, Issaquah & Sammamish Reporter

We’re so proud of you Max!

Skyline quarterback Max Browne capped his storied high-school career last week, being recognized by Gatorade as its 2012-13 National Football Player of the Year.

The university of southern California-bound Browne finished his senior season completing 277 of his 377 passing attempts (73.5 percent) for 4,526 yards, 49 touchdowns and just five interceptions.

He broke Brian Lindgren’s old state record record for total yardage (12,575), tallying up 12,947 yards during his three years as a starter.

Browne led Skyline to a 37-5 record over three years, winning two state titles after taking over for Jake Heaps as a sophomore.

Congrats Max Browne2012 Gatorade National Player of the Year
