LILLIE LANGTRYRace analysis None of theEnglish, Irish and Frenchversions of the 1,000 Guineasthis year had seen a clear-cutwinner. Special Duty wasawarded two of the races afterfinishing second in bunchfinishes at Newmarket andLongchamp, and Bethrahscrambled home to win at theCurragh, where the first fivehome were separated byshort-heads, heads and necks.

So the Coronation Stakeswas an opportunity for onefilly to stake a claim tochampion status in thethree-year-old fillies’ milingdivision. Neither Special Dutynor Bethrah made the trip toAscot, but the first-past-the-post and the third fromNewmarket, Jacqueline Questand Gile Na Greine, did, alongwith three of the five fillieswho were in the blanket finishat the Curragh, Anna Salai,Lillie Langtry and Music Show.

Adding to the intrigue wasLady Of The Desert, anunlucky-in-running fifth in thePouliches last time out, andlast year’s smart two-year-oldTabassum, who was makingher three-year-old debut.

However, what had looked acompetitive race on paperturned into a rout, as LillieLangtry, waited with inmidfield by Johnny Murtagh, made smooth headway turningfor home, led at the furlongpole and stretched clear, beating runner-up Gile NaGreine – who had flopped inthe Irish 1,000 Guineas lasttime out – by one and aquarterlengths, with

Jacqueline Quest proving herNewmarket run at 66-1 nofluke by finishing third.

Lillie Langtry was finallyfulfiling the enormouspotential she had shown lastyear, when easily winning theGroup 2 Debutante Stakes andrunning away with theTattersalls Timeform Fillies’800. After the sales race shehad finished down the field asa warm favourite in theBreeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’Turf (which came at the end ofa busy season, and in whichshe was reported to haveinjured a knee), and on herthree-year-old debut in theIrish 1,00 Guineas, had flownat the finish for fifth.

Lillie Langtry is expected tostep up to 1m2f for her nextassignment, either the PrettyPolly or Nassau Stakes.

The Coronation Stakessparked a revival in thefortunes of her trainer, AidanO’Brien, at Royal Ascot.O’Brien had been without awinner for the first three daysof the meeting, but won theQueen’s Vase with MikhailGlinka later that afternoon andthe Golden Jubilee Stakes withStarspangledbanner thefollowing day.Pedigree A remarkable twistin the tale of Coolmore andDarley’s sale-ring stand-off hasbeen the Irish operation’ssuccess in recent seasons withhorses produced by mares bredand culled by the Maktoumfamily.

Last year’s Group 1-winningjuveniles Jan Vermeer and StNicholas Abbey both fall into

the category: the former is outof Shadow Song, bred and soldby Darley to John O’Byrne as athree-year-old for 74,000gns,and the latter was also bred bySheikh Mohammed and sold asa three-year-old, for a pittanceof 3,200gns.

And now Lillie Langtry joinsthe group. Her dam, theDarshaan mare Hoity Toity, was bred by Maktoum AlMaktoum’s Gainsborough Studbut was sold, unraced, toCorrin Stud as a two-year-oldfor 15,000gns in 2002.

Hindsight is always 20/20,and we do not know whatperceived faults may haveprompted her sale, but theprice looks a snip now, takinginto account Darshaan’simpeccable record as abroodmare sire and the mare’sillustrious family members, including champion sprinterGreat Commotion and Group 2winner Lead On Time (bothuseful sires) and, further back, the outstanding Prix de l’Arcde Triomphe winner andchampion sire Vaguely Noble.

Hoity Toity’s first foal for hernew owners confirmed the

mare to be a bargain buy. TheMontjeu filly, named Song OfFreedom, sold as a foal to PaulShanahan for €280,000. Shewas resold to Dermot Weld as ayearling for €375,000, but diedas a four-year-old last year.

Next came a filly by HawkWing, who was sold to the lateBrian Grassick as a foal for62,000gns and bought back bythe same agent for €100,000when re-offered a year later. She has started once, finishingdown the field in a GowranPark maiden at three last year.

Lillie Langtry provided herbreeders with a 70,000gnspayday when sold as a foal, and was a pinhooking successfor Ashtown House Stud, asshe sold as a yearling for230,000gns. Her year-youngerhalf-sister by Hurricane Runwas sold as a foal last year toBlandford Bloodstock for170,000gns.

Lillie Langtry’s sire, DanehillDancer, enjoyed a fine RoyalAscot, also supplying AlbanyStakes scorer Memory andthree runners-up – Quadrille inthe Hampton Court Stakes,Himalaya in the BuckinghamPalace Handicap and Imposingin the Duke of EdinburghHandicap. Lillie Langtry is thefourth stakes performer bredon the Danehill Dancer-Darshaan cross, after GlitterBaby, Jalmira and Shendaya –all, incidentally, females.

Race analysis A Grade 3winner on turf earlier this year,Paddy O’Prado had acquittedhimself well without winningin three attempts on dirt intop-class company – includingthe Kentucky Derby – before areturn to grass for the ColonialTurf Cup saw him resumewinning ways.

The Dale Romans-trainedPaddy O’Prado earned a tilt atthe Triple Crown trail with acomfortable victory in thePalm Beach Stakes on theGulfstream Park turf in March.A second to Stately Victor inthe Grade 1 Blue Grass Stakeson Polytrack at Keeneland amonth later ensured the colthad the requisite earnings to

take his chance in theKentucky Derby.

Paddy O’Prado surpassedhimself in the Run For TheRoses on his next outing, hisfirst start on dirt since the Julyof his juvenile season, with arunning-on third to SuperSaver and Ice Box. That effortensured he was sent off amongthe favourites for thePreakness Stakes but hedisappointed at Pimlico, running a distant sixth toLookin At Lucky.

Back on turf in the ColonialTurf Cup, Paddy O’Prado madeno mistake, turning into thehome straight three horseswide but powering clear toscore by three lengths from theArlington Classic winnerWorkin For Hops.

AFSARERace analysis In a busy fiveweeks, Afsare made hisracecourse debut and wonthree races, culminating with athrilling victory in theHampton Court Stakes over theQueen’s Quadrille – denyingHer Majesty a first Royal Ascotwinner since Free Agent in theChesham Stakes of 2008.

A typically progressiveinmate of Luca Cumani’sBedford House Stables, Afsarecame with a strong late run tofinish second on his debut, in a1m maiden at Kempton on May 3. In his second race, 12days later, he overcame anawkward start and hanging leftto record an easy victory atodds of 4-11 at Newmarket, before heading to Doncaster inthe first week of June to beat afield of five in a conditions raceon his first start over 1m2f.

In Friday’s Hampton CourtStakes he raced prominentlyand hit the front at the furlongpole, but required all of KierenFallon’s strength to hold offQuadrille by a short-head.

Ballydoyle raider FencingMaster, who had looked ahighly promising three-year-oldprospect when just touched offin last season’s Dewhurst, finished out of the places forthe third time this year. TheOratorio colt got going far toolate to finish sixth, beaten onlytwo and three-quarter lengths, but still disappointing for ahorse dropped to Listedcompany after finishingseventh in the 2,000 Guineas.

Plans are up in the air forAfsare, although Cumani didsay after the race that he didn’tsee the colt as a St Leger type.

Pedigree Afsare’s family owesnothing to trainer LucaCumani and owner SheikhMohammed Obaid AlMaktoum, and it keepsproducing the goods. Theowner-trainer combinationcampaigned Zomaradah, thedam of Afsare’s sire Dubawi, towin the Italian Oaks, as well asAfsare’s dam, Jumaireyah, towin a valuable 1m2f handicapat three, and Jumaireyah’shalf-brother, Lost SoldierThree, to score in a Listedstaying handicap over 1m6f.

Jumaireyah’s first foal, ReemThree, also won a valuablehandicap for the owner-trainer,combination before finishingsecond in a Listed race over1m2f.

The sheikh’s association withthe family began with thepurchase of Jumaireyah’s dam,Donya, a daughter of Mill Reefand Prix de Diane winnerDunette, as a yearling forIr£400,000 in 1986. Trained by

Sir Michael Stoute, she rantwice at three without success, but her pedigree was enhancedwhen her year-youngerhalf-brother by Sadler’s Wells,French Glory, won the Grade 1Rothman’s International atWoodbine in 1990.

Jumaireyah has atwo-year-old colt by Tiger Hilland last year produced ayearling colt by DubaiDestination who died, beforebeing covered again byDubawi.

Afsare is another feather inthe cap for Dubawi, last year’sleading first-season sire bynumber of individual winners. One of the most pleasingaspects of Dubawi’s progress ishis versatility; as well as themany sharp two-year-olds heproduced last year, includingGroup 2 winners Poet’s Voiceand Sand Vixen, this year hisstakes winners have come overdistances ranging from 1m(including 2,000 Guineas heroMakfi) up to 1m4f, thedistance Monterosso scoredover in the King Edward VIIStakes, also at Royal Ascot.

Paddy O’Prado could prove atough nut to crack this seasonand beyond on turf, a surfaceon which his previous formand pedigree (he’s by Sadler’sWells’ National Stakes-winningson El Prado) suggests heshould excel.

Jerry Crawford, manager ofDonegal Racing, owners ofPaddy O’Prado, told journalistsafter the race: “El Prado’sprogeny always get better asthey get older. I expect his bestracing to actually come as afour-year-old. But we’re goingto see him continue to dobetter through the course ofthis year and we’re going tostart mapping a calendar thatends with the Breeders’ Cupand has a big intermediatedate of the Secretariat. Thenext leg of that will be comingto the Virginia Derby.”

Pedigree Unlike most otherGroup 1-winning sons of

Sadler’s Wells, when El Pradoretired to stud he had to fightto build his reputation on theback of early crops bred at amodest fee. The differencebetween El Prado and many ofhis high-achieving paternalhalf-brothers was that he hadbeen purchased to stand not inEurope, but in America, wheredirt rules.

El Prado’s turf form andpedigree – he raced solely inEurope and was out of theIrish 1,000 Guineas heroineLady Capulet – proved no barto Stateside success, though.

After a fair start with hisfirst crop bred off a fee of$7,500 at Airdrie Stud inKentucky, he was thrust intothe limelight in 2002 when hisson Medaglia D’Oro won thefirst of his three Grade 1victories, and his reputationsoared to new heights twoyears later when MedagliaD’Oro destroyed the field in

the Donn Handicap. He wasjoined by Kitten’s Joy, whocarried all before him on theAmerican turf, and ArtieSchiller, who announced hisarrival as a top miler with twoGrade 2 victories. In 2006 and2007 El Prado’s fee at his newhome at Adena Springs hadclimbed to a career high of$125,000.

El Prado died last year, justas his influence was spreading:in 2009 Medaglia D’Oro’s firstcrop threw up the outstandingthree-year-old filly and horseof the year Rachel Alexandra, and Kitten’s Joy got off to afair start with his firstjuveniles, including the smartDean’s Kitten. El Prado is alsodamsire of the Grade 1 scorersBit Of Whimsy and Laragh.

Paddy O’Prado is out of theGrade 2-winning Prized mareFun House, a half-sister toGrade 1 runner-up Early Flyerfrom the family of LouisianaDerby winner and DarleyJapan stallion Pyro.

The cross of El Prado over amare by a Roberto-line stallionhas previously come up trumpswith Kitten’s Joy (out of amare by Lear Fan), the Grade 1 Spinster Stakeswinner Asi Siempre (out of amare by Silver Hawk) and theBelmont Breeders’ CupHandicap scorer SenorSwinger (out of a mare by Kris S).

QUICK QUESTIONSRory Mathews, managerof the Barouche Stud

Student FocusFeaturing members ofthe Irish National Studbreeding course. Thisweek, Jason Smith

‘Memory could wina Group 1 later on’

You bred Rainfall, winnerof Ascot’s Jersey Stakes –were you confident? Weknew it was going to be a bigtask with a Classic-placedhorse in a field, and no fillyhad won the race since 1991.That said, we always thoughtshe was nice and she was thefastest filly at the Guineasbreeze-up sale last year, so wewere hopeful of a place.

What was your feelingafterwards? It was justfantastic, particularly for studowner Barbara Facchino. Itwas our first Royal Ascotwinner and, having bred andraced her dam, that made itvery special. Molomo was

second in thePretty Polly, soshe was verygood and haspassed thatability on tothis filly.

What other progeny hasMolomo had? Last year wesold her Clodovil yearling fillyat Arqana for €90,000. She iscalled Bint Nas and is intraining with Mick Channon. This year Molomo has aDiamond Green colt that willbe sold at Newmarket. She isin foal to Captain Rio.

Other Ascot highlights?I’m a big Goldikova fan andher clash with Paco Boy wasfantastic – undoubtedly therace of the week. I wasdelighted for the Hannonsbecause it was vindication thatPaco Boy is a top miler.

Which other BaroucheStud graduate are youlooking forward to?Decorative is a nice three-year-old filly with Michael Jarvis. She has won both her startsand is rated 96 so there couldbe plenty of improvement inher. Another we like isTotheendoftheearth. She is anunraced Hurricane Run filly intraining with Sylvester Kirk. She is out of Lightwood Ladywho was also bred here.

FROM Cambridge, in the heart ofthe Waikato region of NewZealand, Jason Smith’s mother wasan apprentice jockey and hisfather played polo. Furthermore, his step-father is leading trainerStephen Autridge, so Smith hasbeen around horses since he wasvery young.

“I started hanging around thestable when I was about ten andhelped there growing up. Then in2007 I went to work at the Cam-bridge Stud, initially preppingthe yearlings. I spent two and ahalf years there, mainly workingbetween yearlings and stallions, but also with mares and foals,” saysSmith.

Having also worked the saleswith Think Big Stud in Australia,Smith decided to try to earn ascholarship to the Irish NationalStud. “I had heard great thingsabout the course from a numberof friends and applied for theNew Zealand Thoroughbred Breed-ers Association Scholarship, whichis sponsored by Taylor FamilyTrust. After an interview I was toldI had been accepted.”

Since arriving in Kildare the20-year-old has enjoyed the workand lectures relating to brood-mare management. “The Maddens-town rotation has been great,

working with mares and foals. It puts into practice all the thingswe learned from the great reprod-uction lectures from BridgetMcGing. Having not done a lot ofthat before I found it all really inter-esting.”

Next up for Smith and all thestudents is the final examinationon Saturday, but once the coursefinishes in a couple of weeks hewill return home. “I am going towork the season at TrelawneyStud back home, up until theyearling sale at Karaka in Jan-uary. In the long term, I hope toset up as a trainer at Mata Mata.”

Having watched Royal Ascotwith great interest, Smith is verykeen on the Albany Stakes win-ner Memory. “She was very im-pressive and looked like a fillythat could really go on to win aGroup 1 later in the year.”

‘Molomo has passed onher ability to Rainfall’

Mathews: ‘Rainfall was fastestfilly at Guineas breeze-up sale’

By Cathal Beale

IT WAS a very solid week forIrish-based stallions at Ascot, with seven sires supplying eightwinners, a figure which does notinclude two victories from Cool-more shuttle stallion Choisir. Theson of Danehill Dancer was oneof six stallions from the Fethardstud to sire one or more winners.

Tagula and Acclamation gaveRathbarry Stud a Group 1 doublethrough the victories of CanfordCliffs and Equiano respectively, and the County Limerick-basedMellon Stud were on target withtheir stallion Environment Friendsiring Cill Rialaig to win the Dukeof Edinburgh Stakes.

Of the meeting’s 30 races, tenwent to horses bred in Ireland, threeat Group 1 level. The Wertheimer-bred Goldikova got the week offto a flyer for Irish-breds, landingthe Queen Anne Stakes from Irish-breds Paco Boy and Dream Eater.

Canford Cliffs supplied Ire-land’s second Group 1 win in theSt James’s Palace Stakes. Bredby Simon Hubbard Rodwell, theTagula colt was bought as a foalby Jimmy Murphy and sold as ayearling by Murphy’s RedpenderStud to Peter Doyle for £50,000at the Doncaster St Leger Sale.

Bred at Ballinahown Stud, near

Fermoy, by Kevin Lynch, LillieLangtry took the Group 1 Coron-ation Stakes. Sold as a foal byJoe Hernon’s Castletown Stud toAshtown Stud, she was resold atTattersalls October yearling sale.

Two juveniles carrying the Iresuffix recorded Ascot victories, with Approve landing the Group2 Norfolk Stakes and Memorygetting her head in front in theGroup 3 Albany Stakes. Bothwere bred in County Kildare. App-rove grew up at Eimear Mulhern’sAbbeville and Meadow CourtStuds, while Memory was bred at

USAZENYATTA dented the hopesof European raiders Rip VanWinkle and Twice Over whenscoring a historic victory in lastyear’s Breeders’ Cup Classic, but British ex-pat St Triniansalmost gained revenge forEurope when just failing tobring Zenyatta’s 16-racewinning streak to an end in theGrade 1 Vanity Handicap atHollywood Park on Sunday.

St Trinians grabbed the leada furlong out and lookeddestined to score, but afterturning for home five horseswide, Zenyatta unleashed herlethal finishing kick to run onand grab the leader, passing StTrinians with half a length tospare on the line. Zenyatta’sstablemate Zardana was sixlengths back in third.

St Trinians, already a USGrade 2 winner since beingexported, was bred by EmmaHunter out of the ClassicCliche mare Cherrycombe-Row.Her sire, Piccolo, stands atThrockmorton Court Stud inWorcestershire and herpurchase to race in Americawas masterminded by youngBritish-born, California-basedbloodstock agent Jamie Lloyd.

Zenyatta’s sire Street Crywas also on the mark thisweek with Zaidan, who wonthe Chesham Stakes at RoyalAscot and is to be prepared, with a tilt at the 2011Kentucky Derby in mind.

EuropeLAST year’s top French-trainedthree-year-old filly Stacelitagot her career back on trackwith a comfortable success

over Group winners CourtCanibal and Russian Cross inLa Coupe at Longchamp.

Stacelita, trained byJean-Claude Rouget for theWall Street trader MartinSchwartz, won the PrixSaint-Alary and Prix de Dianeby an aggregate 10 lengths in2009, before being awardedthe Prix Vermeille by dint ofthe Longchamp stewards’dubious decision to demotefirst-past-the-post Dar Re Mi.She then ran an honourableseventh to Sea The Stars in thePrix de l’Arc de Triomphe buthad faltered on her comeback

at four, when a distant fourthto Goldikova in the Prixd’Ispahan.

Bred by Jean-Pierre Duboisin France, Stacelita owns aTeutonic-tinged pedigree: sheis by redoubtable German sireMonsun and out of a mare byanother of Germany’s linchpinstallions, Dashing Blade.

Gestüt Schlenderhanresident Monsun also had apair of stakes-placed horsesduring the week – Aizavoski, second to Opinion Poll in theListed Prix la Moscowa atSaint-Cloud, and Scolari,runner-up in the Group 3

Grosser Preis der Wirtschaft atDortmund.

Norderney had passed thewinning post at Dortmund insecond place, behind Illo, afour-year-old colt by Monsun’sSchlenderhan studmateTertullian. However, Illo, aSchlenderhan homebredhalf-brother to the operation’sGerman Oaks heroine Iota, was demoted to third afterwandering off a true courseand interfering with Scolari.

That decision promotedNorderney, a daughter ofDeutsches Derby winner DaiJin, to the winner’s enclosure.

St Triniansput in placeby mightyZenyatta

Zenyatta and Mike Smith hold St Trinians and Martin Garcia to win the Vanity Handicapat Hollywood Park on Sunday and extend the mare’s winning sequence to 17 races

ALEX EVERS/EQUISPORT PHOTOSDai Jin, himself a son ofbrilliant Prix de l’Arc deTriomphe winner PeintreCelebre, has enjoyed a goodsummer, with his sonLindentree running second toZazou in the Group 2Oppenheim Union-Rennen, atrial for the Deutsches Derby, this month, and his daughterIsantha running third toContredanse in the Group 2Oaks d’Italia in May.

Dai Jin’s standard bearer,four-time Group winner LiangKay, has also shown good formthis year at five, finishing thirdto Gris De Gris in the Group 3Prix Edmond Blanc in Apriland a close fourth to NightMagic in the Group 2 GrosserPreis der Hauptstadtregion.

A sire best known foroffspring who excel at theother end of the spectrum toDai Jin’s, Orpen struck withanother talented, sharpjuvenile when his son BluConstellation won the PremioPrimi Passi at San Siro in Italy.

Blu Constellation is theproduct of a sire and a damsirewho fell out of favour withBritish and Irish breeders andwere exported to stand inmainland Europe. Orpen stoodunder the Coolmore banner atCastle Hyde Stud until 2008,when he was transferred to theHaras du Thenney in France, and the damsire, exceptionaljuvenile Celtic Swing, wasswitched from the IrishNational Stud to Allevamentodi Besnate in Italy this year.Martin Stevens
