BLACK SATURDAY
Ten years ago the fires that swept through Victoria were devastating and shocked everyone. It was a series of bushfires (four hundred individual fires) that ignited or were burning on Saturday 7th February 2009 and were among Australia’s all-time worst bushfire disasters. More than seventy-eight communities across Victoria were directly affected, with Marysville, Kinglake West, Narbethong, Flowerdale and Strathewen being absolutely devastated by the fire. One hundred and eighty people died and many left homeless as a result. Two thousand and twenty-nine houses were destroyed.
In its aftermath, the day became known as Black Saturday. What a dark time in our history. It is etched in our minds forever.
Last week, many of us paused and reflected and remembered the Black Saturday bushfires which caused such widespread devastation and impacted on so many families and communities. It is ten years on and this devastating event has changed lives for ever. Life for many will never be the same, however, communities have adapted to the “new normal”. The stories we have listened to this week and the commemorations we have seen on television show us the strength there is in a strong community and what is achieved when everyone pulls together.
Our thoughts are with the many communities that were affected so drastically ten years ago, as they remember ten years ago when life was so different for them.

HOUSE ATHLETICS
The House Athletics (Field and Track events) were held on Wednesday 13th February, at the Bill Sewart Athletics Track, Burwood. Middle and Senior School students showed their athleticism and competitiveness. Such pride in their House was evident both in the colourful display of red, blue, gold and green on the field and in the spectator stands. The encouragement voiced was loud and clear, reflecting the sportsmanship and enthusiasm of participation in competition.
Thank you to the parents who attended and joined in the fun. The parent/teacher/student relay was certainly a highlight as usual! The winner of the relay event was the teacher team.
Thank you to all the staff for making this such a wonderful experience for all our students.

MEDICATIONS AT SCHOOL
It is crucial that all medications are handed to the office staff. Medical Authority forms must be completed.
Any medication that needs to be given at school, must be in its original container with your child’s name on it.
Please do NOT give it to your child to carry to school or place in your child’s bag. It is extremely dangerous if the medication falls out of their pocket or bag and is picked up by another child in the playground
.
The only exception is Ventolin and some types of cream. Students are permitted to carry Ventolin so they can administer it without delay.
CAMPS, SPORTS AND EXCURSIOS FUND (CSEF)
The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) supports families in covering the cost of school trips and sporting activities.
Families holding a valid means-tested concession card are eligible to apply. A special consideration category also exists.
A payment of $125.00 for eligible primary school students is paid directly to the school to be used towards, camps, sport and excursion costs for the benefit of the student.
Victorian government school students Prep and Year Seven, who are CSEF recipients of the CSEF are also automatically eligible for a uniform package through State Schools’ Relief. Please speak to school administration staff for further information.
