My Memories Go off and on These Days

A smile comes from your lips. “Do you remember me?”

I pat your hand and tell you, “It’s alright!”

Your eyes seem to be moist,

your lips a trembleBut then you give my cheek a

gentle touch; You whisper in my ear, the

words so softly“You know I love you, love

you, oh’ so much!”

You say, “Good-bye,” and blow me one last wind kissYou looked familiar to me

now and then’It was so nice to have this

stranger’s visitI gain a thought, “Should I

remember him?”

A uniform in white comes into see me

She helps me into bed and all is quiet;

So unfamiliar to me the surroundings

And then the uniformed one says, “Good-night.”

My mind has settled somewhere in the distanceI can’t recall the days, the

LETTER TO EDITOR

Opponents of a 15-bed mental crisis care facility proposed for a quiet street in Orangevale have launched a formal effort to persuade county offi cials to relocate the center to a more appropriate location.

A group called Protect OV Kids has set up a website at https://protectovkids.com and circulating a petition in opposition to the facility at 9048 Elm Avenue, which is located within a half mile of four Orangevale schools.

While acknowledging the need for expanded mental health services, the organization believes placing a crisis mental health center in a peaceful residential neighborhood is unwise and unfair to residents who move to Orangevale expecting a semi-rural quality of life. Opponents are concerned about a possible threat to the hundreds of school children who walk unaccompanied past the proposed facility every week.

Turning Point Community Programs is seeking a conditional use permit that would exempt it from the site’s agricultural-residential zoning restrictions. Though no hearing

date has been set, the proposal could potentially go before the Orangevale Community Planning Advisory Council as early as Jan. 3.

The proposed facility would house mentally ill adults transitioning from hospitals, homelessness and the criminal justice system. A state report says the patients are “at risk of harm to themselves or others.” In addition, patients are not required to remain on the property or stay on their medication.

With 15 beds for the mentally ill and a staff of 13, the crisis center also is a far larger commercial enterprise than currently allowed under the neighborhood’s zoning, generating dozens of car trips, noise and potential transiency problems.

The Orangevale site was purchased by Turning Point for $1.15 million using state grant money in August. The nonprofi t’s other county facilities are in high-density or commercial areas that didn’t require a zoning change.

Bera’s “Victory” is a Loss© by Mark Dempsey

As someone who, in previous elections, contributed to Ami Bera’s campaign, made calls on his behalf and fl ew a Bera yard sign, far from celebrating, I'm ambivalent about returning him to congress. Why? He won only in the context of a single election, but this victory is damaging in the long run because it degrades the Democratic brand. Bera is really Republican-lite.

Like most politicians, Bera is well-spoken and polite, yet his actions betrayed his constituents. Among other things, he voted to fast track TPP, and for the DARK Act. The latter prohibits local or state mandates to disclose GMOs in food--it passed and Barack Obama signed it. Although many people excuse Bera’s behavior as catering to his right-wing district, neither of these things are particularly right-wing issues, in fact the Trump administration promises to kill things like TPP.

Worst of all, Bera sponsored an austerity-advocating "Budget Workshop" promoted by Republican billionaire Pete Peterson's Concord Coalition. Peterson was Nixon's Commerce Secretary and sponsors organizations whose primary function is to spread fear about the national "debt"--including the Concord Coalition, the Peterson Institute, "Fix the Debt" speaking tours, etc.

The problem with reducing “debt” is that we have debt-based money. That's right,

the money is debt. Reducing the "debt" reduces the money in the economy and the population's savings.

Debt/money works this way: Your bank account is your money or your asset, but is a liability or debt from the bank’s point of view. When you write a check, you're assigning a portion of the bank's debt to the payee.

Dollars are, in effect, checks made out to cash drawn on the U.S. central bank (the Federal Reserve). Currency is the Federal Reserve's liability--just like your checking account is the bank's liability. National "debt" is the amount of dollar fi nancial assets out in the economy and an accounting identity with the population's savings. So who lobbies to make our bank accounts smaller? Answer: Pete Peterson and Ami Bera.

Historically, what happens when government reduces this national "debt"? Households who need dollars to pay their obligations struggle. Their creditors don’t say "Fewer dollars are available now so we'll reduce your mortgage payment." Instead, they say "Pay your debt or we'll foreclose on your house."

History confi rms that waves of foreclosures and asset forfeitures are occur when reductions in "debt"/dollars occur. The last signifi cant reduction was the Clinton surplus. The time before that occurred in 1929. Andrew Jackson even paid off the entire "debt" in 1835. What correlates 100% with the seven major "debt" reductions

since 1776? Answer: A Great Depression-sized hole in the economy, from the Great Recession to the worst of these which was the Panic of 1837. When the amount of "debt"/money declines, an epidemic of foreclosures and defaults ensues. Plutocrats like Peterson pick up assets on the cheap, but everyone else suffers.

Never mind sponsoring a Republican-authored workshop, Bera is promoting austerity at a time when it couldn't be more harmful. Both major political parties believe in this bizarre policy too and can promote such misinformation because a currency creators (government) are completely different than what we’re used to: being currency users (households). Supposedly "liberal" Clinton still speaks proudly of having reduced national "debt" even when the Great Recession followed his austerity!

So yes, I'm actually saying there are worse things than losing, including winning with a turncoat. I apologize if this offends some Bera fans. He is nice, and polite. When I met him he was charming. I'm sure Benedict Arnold was too.

sEll A hoME?As a Real Estate Broker, I’m often asked if winter is a good season to sell a home. Although many people think that Spring or Summer is a good time, the Winter season has its advantages as well. The real estate market does slow down during December through February however with fewer homes available there is also less competition for buyers. It’s counterintuitive, but the Winter can be an excellent time to fi nd a home. That’s particularly true for buyer’s sick of losing out to others in the busier homebuying months. The other advantage for buyers shopping in the Winter season is that this a time where home-shopping allows buyers a chance to see real-estate properties in a clearer light. With fl owers gone and curb appeal at a minimum, shoppers can more easily focus on the permanent features of the home. The Winter season can also be advantageous for sellers because they’re not competing with a large inventory of homes. Less competition usually translates into more buyers viewing your home and a quicker sale. If your home is marketed well and priced right, there is no ‘bad’ season to list your home. If you’re thinking of selling your home in the next few months, be sure to contact an experienced Realtor who can answer all your questions or concerns about the pros and cons of listing your home during the Winter season. Fair Oaks American Legion Post 383 has been learning the value of community involvement. Knowing that the American Legion is a valuable part of their community, they recently made arrangements to show their gratitude to their local First Responders. It started with a suggestion by Post Adjutant Bill Heilmann that the post seek some way to show a sign of appreciation for those heroes that put it all on the line for the safety and wellbeing of their community. At fi rst, they sought to take up a post collection for Coffee gift cards, but the various department regulations prevent offi cers and fi refi ghters from receiving any form of gratuity. After a long round table discussion, it was decided to put up a couple of banners at a busy intersection simply saying thanks. The idea was

taken to a post meeting and the membership voted to support the signs. Post offi cer Dominick Damore researched locations where at the end of the current election, we could get permission to use a space where election signs were removed. Meanwhile, post member Pete Sarelanna designed and printed the two banners to display. A site was found, permission granted, and on Nov. 9th, the day after the election, up went the banners. The Executive Committee knows that not only is the post demonstrating its support for these heroes, but Fair Oaks is also made aware that the American Legion is an important and involved part of the local community.Written by:Mark L. The Orangevale Grange No. 354 has been involved with the National Dictionary Project, Words for Thirds Program since 2005. The goal of the Dictionary Project is to provide students with dictionaries to keep as their own personal reference book. By providing this tool we assist teachers in helping students become active readers, good writers, creative thinkers and resourceful learners. Third grade is the best place to hand out these dictionaries because habits are best learned and become part of us if we learn something or become acquainted with it when we are young. Get a kid started with their own dictionary at age 8 in 3rd grade and they become hooked on it for the rest of their lives. Using it becomes a desirable habit rather than a task. Fund-raising for this project is taken from the donations given by the general public who park in the Grange Halls parking lot (5807 Walnut Ave,

Orangevale) while visiting the Nearby Dovewood Court Holiday Celebrations in Lights. The donations goes directly to the purchase of the dictionaries for the following year. The Orangevale Grange kicked off the project in 2005. Since that time, they have handed out over 4000 dictionaries to third graders in Orangevale and Fair Oaks.

Last week I made the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies featured in the last issue. They were a hit with everyone who tried them! Dig out that last issue for the recipe because it is a good one!

Since the holidays are near and desserts are dear, I asked the Orangevale Woman’s Club for a recipe to spread some cheer. They came through with a yummy looking cake. It has simple ingredients and it is easy to make, so get out your

supplies and get ready to bake!

If you would like to share a favorite recipe, please send a copy to Suzanne Feblowitz at the Orangevale View ([email protected]). Be sure to include your phone number or email with your recipe in case we need to contact you. If you wish to remain anonymous, just let us know and we will omit your name.

Hello everyone and Happy Holidays. My name is Kathleen Schultz, a dog groomer certifi ed by the National Dog Groomers Association of America, as well as an award winning competition groomer, and the owner/operator of The Prancing Poodle, All Breed Grooming. The Prancing Poodle is a full service grooming salon located in downtown Orangevale at 9346 Greenback Lane #1. Now that I have had a chance to briefl y introduce myself to all of you, wow, I'm starting to feel like it's that holly jolly time of year when you meet new friends and express good cheer. I'd like to offer some suggestions about what to avoid for your pets this holiday season. One of the most important things to be careful about is feeding pets holiday food. Yes, it's always tempting to feed your adorable pet a tasty morsel from the table as it looks up at you with thoseBig Sad Eyes. A little piece won't do much harm, they say, but are you thinking clearly about safety? Holiday meat products, bones, grains, and my personal favorites, chocolate and candies, can all be "toxic and harmful" to your furry friends. Also these tiny morsels for you may not be so tiny for their smaller bodies and not

good for their waistlines.Holiday plants can be hazardous and poisonous, and this time of year we like to fi ll the house with them to help create a festive environment. While these plants can be small and look friendly and beautiful, they need to be out of reach of curious noses attached to four feet. Most popular is the Christmas tree with problematic pine needles, but also

mistletoe, holly, lilies and poinsettias, to name a few, are potential hazards to your furry friends. Giving a cute and loving pet as a special present for a family member or friend may seem like a wonderful idea, but remember that the pet is not just for the holidays. Whether getting or giving a pet this holiday season make sure you make a proper choice so the pet can be in its "forever"home. There are many different kinds and sizes of common pets to consider, from goldfi sh to golden retrievers, to golden horses. Each can bring joy to the right household. But it takes a little research and careful thought to insure a very merry time of year for now and for many moreyears to come. While I don't have a goldfi sh, my husband and I have three dogs and a horse, and we all seem to understand each other.I hope this information is helpful. This is my fi rst of many articles to come. Now that winter is just about here, next time I'd like to offer some tips about preventing your dog from developing badly matted hair during these colder months. If there ideas or topics that you would like me to cover in the future, please email me at [email protected]. For grooming appointments call 916-202-9292. See you next time!

C O M M U N I T Y S P O T L I G H TToDAy I MET A

MusE.

It was a bright beautiful day and I drove to work in my usually good mood. This winter has been cold and rainy and lately the sun has been covered by clouds or fog, so seeing the sun would have made good moods for others, who might not usually be that way. For me my good mood just had an excuse.

My trade of choice is sales. Yes I’m a salesman, new homes to be more specifi c. So there I was all dressed up in my suit and tie and in walked a lady to take a look around.

It is quite common for the fi rst part of a greeting to be met with a friendly hello and an ok

please leave me alone to wander response following soon there after. This was exactly the case this time as well.

I think it is prevalent throughout society now. We teach our children not to speak to strangers (which is good common sense) and people really do look at you funny if you offer them a friendly smile and a hello when you pass them by on a walk around the block.

People in general are absolutely interesting give it a try sometime and meet a stranger. In sales I get to practice daily. What a wonderful job I have.

I got to talking to this lady and we talked about many things, come to fi nd out she was an artist she sculpted clay and

bronze and different things she even made a living doing it. She was very modest and after prying for more details I believe her to be an accomplished artist. She is retired now from

doing that but she said her greatest joy was being a Muse, I looked at her funny and she explained what that word was and we moved on to the next model home.

I told her about my family and about their wonderful gifts they have and how I encourage them, then I went and told her that I had thought about writing. I should have known, didn’t she just tell me of her great joy. The next thing I know she had a commitment from me to take action.

After she left I asked my co-worker if she knew what a Muse was, and of course she did. I explained my conversation and she was actually jealous she said she had never met a Muse before.

A Muse is someone who inspires artists.

So this article is an attempt at writing something of interest. I guess what I’m trying to say is people are worth knowing and we all have interesting stories to tell. I would encourage you to get to know someone new. Just be careful what you tell them or they might have you writing something for the paper.Article by:Dwight Sparks.

DAysPRING

He comes to us The fi rst streak of Light. The revelation Shining in the night.

The darkness now gone, His light shining through. His truth within us, Changing me and you.

Oh, Savior Divine Oh, Spirit so pure, You draw us so close And hold us secure.

This gift so holy, Your presence within, From Your dear Father To save us from sin.

Luke 1:78 Through the tender mercy of our God, with which the Dayspring from on high visited us.

God's gift to me; my gift to you. Be blessed Jerri

Jerri wrote the poem in May of this year, and knew as soon as she read it over she knew it had to be the Christmas Poem for 2016.

Jerri has written Christmas Poems for at least 9 or 10 years. Lots more of other poems since she was 15 years old. Jerri say “ The LORD has given me so many poems. I am now 75 yrs old, so I have a bunch of poems, and love to share them with family and friends. Thought it was a good one for your Christmas edition of the View.”
