Young’s “Tomorrow” tops this week’s Country Aircheck/Mediabase chart and contributed to sales of almost 73,000 first-week copies of his third album. “We’re very proud of that number,” Sony Music Nashville Chairman Gary Overton tells Country Aircheck. “That represents almost three times what his last debut week was, which Mkt Leap: Out Of The Pan, Into The PPM New KSON/San Diego morning teamers John Flint and Tammy Lee got to trade four feet of snowfall for 263 days of sun in moving from market No. 98 to No. 17. But the former WMAD/ Madison personalities also traded diary methodology for PPM, a fact they acknowledged as they went after the job with this funny video clip. And while making that shift successfully is perhaps their biggest challenge, many factors go into taking such a leap. A fact known all too well by KMPS/Seattle’s Candy & Potter, who made the jump into PPM last year. “After 11 years in Madison, I was initially worried by all I’ve heard about PPM,” Flint admits. “I knew we’d have to get to the point quicker and that there would have to be some tweaking of the show.” Lee adds that their attitude was to embrace the change. “It’s easy to be complacent,” she says, “but I never want to be that person. I’m excited about the process of learning and unlearning.” Even after so much time together, John and Tammy both say they neither have pre-conceived ideas nor feel they know everything. I think was about 26,000. That album [The Man I Want To Be] went gold, so this is a good omen.” Overton says every aspect of Young’s career is clicking. “Having a huge hit song helps, obviously, but to be honest, the plan from day one and the execution on every level is working. The tour he’s on – getting out in front of Jason Aldean’s crowd – is a great help to him. He’s also headlining his own dates and getting a lot of TV exposure.” In lieu of our regular Chart Chat feature, we’ll let Overton frame the accomplishment Young, VP Keith Gale and the RCA promotion dog pound have managed with the singer’s fourth No. 1 in a row. “We did some research,” he says. “There are not a lot of artists, new or established right now, who can say they’ve had four No. 1 singles in a row.” Next up for Young: “Keeping the heat on,” Overton says. “He and James Stroud delivered a great album, ‘You’ is the next single and it’s onward and upward. We’re seeing more calls for TV, and in the CMA nominations I think you’ll see him in the running for New Male and potentially Male, at least in the early rounds.” In a genre and format cresting with strong music (see last week’s issue), the rise of another star performer ought to be music to everyone’s ears.

Shoe Chew Eschewed Also exulting over Young’s chart success is KIIM/Tucson PD Buzz Jackson, who said on-air in March that he would eat his shoe if “Tomorrow” didn’t top the chart. Hear that bit here. Jackson’s laces apparently got a little tight in May, as he pestered a visiting Kix Brooks to “fix” his countdown show to stave off a leather dining experience. Hear that bit here. You already know the rest of the story, but a listener in Jackson’s corner was prepared for the worst, baking a shoe-cake (pictured) just in case.

Diary: Inside The Numbers Our new semi-regular feature aims to shine the spotlight on dynamic ratings stories. This week: the ABQ. “While our 4.2 is the best 12+ number in two years,” KRST/Albuquerque OM Eddie Haskell says, “Our 25-54 numbers were huge: No. 2 (5.5) behind 94 Rock (KZRR, 7.3). That’s the highest 25-54 share for KRST since Fall ‘06. Woot!” Inside those numbers (see what we did there?), Haskell explains, “The biggest change I can point to was tweaking our music so that the new hits by the biggest artists play most. Listening to the station, it just seems like we’re always playing monster hits. We do local music research, and some big national hits just don’t do well for us, so we don’t play them. That makes a big difference when competing with a national playlist.

BPG’s Christian Kane gives an industry spin on the artist interview:Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio? I was actually driving through Florida with Rocco Cosco. We pulled the car over and just turned it up as loud as we could. It was a chill-bump moment. How did you adjust to all the travel that comes with the radio tour? I’m always living out of a suitcase, so I was

kind of already prepped. My dad was in the oil business and we got transferred around a lot; I was always the new kid. So, I was actually pretty seasoned by the time they pulled the trigger. What are your staple suitcase items? Besides my iPhone, I always have to over pack socks and underwear. I’ll wear the same shirt five days in a row, but I’ve always got to have 10 pairs of tube socks.Who’s the best road companion? That’s a tough question because we all like to have a beer at the end of the night, so I actually enjoy going out with all of them. I’ve known Michael Powers for about 12 years. He’s someone I can relax with, and I don’t have to put on any masks. We’ll head down to the Tin Roof and have a couple cocktails. Pulled any good pranks lately? My guitarist and I picked up a lighter in Amsterdam once that had a naked man on it. We’d put it in each other’s bags so that when airport security asked if we had a lighter we had to pull it out. This lighter made it for about five flights with just me and him passing it back and forth. The lighter would always come out at inopportune times, and this went on for about a year. Who have you seen live that you’ve tried to emulate? Toby Keith. I would jump on the bus and go do a couple cities with him. He likes to put a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll in his country and he’s got a really big show, so I like to take a lot from that.

Christian Kane

“KRST is also live and local all day long, with all personalities having been on with the station a minimum of seven years. And from a marketing standpoint, we own the streets and are involved in all the community events. We also brought a lot of artists in for free shows and meet-and-greet opps.”

My Tunes: Music ThaT shaPed My Life Mercury’s Midwest Charlie Dean discusses her

most influential songs albums and concerts:1. Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band, Red Rocks, Denver, 1984: At the start of the show it was pouring rain. Bruce came out and asked the crowd if we’d like to try and wait it out, or come back in three days. Of course, the answer was wait. The crew swept off the stage, waited until the rain let up a bit and he came back out and did three hours of pure genius. In the

middle of the first song, “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” the rain stopped, and the stars came out in the huge Colorado sky. 2. Prince, Musicology Tour, Xcel Energy Center, St. Paul, 2004: I’ve seen him many times, as is required by law in Minneapolis, and he’s always amazing. But you never know what he’s going to play. New stuff, jazzy stuff, extra funky stuff, covers — it’s always an adventure. This was the tour he’d decided to play the hits — all of them. Purple reigned!3. Sugarland, Chicago Theater, 2007: Watching “our babies” grow up is the stuff that gets us through the fighting times. This was Sugarland’s first headlining tour, supporting Enjoy The Ride. The sold-out crowd sang back every word — even the new songs — loud. Plus, it may have been one of the first times I heard “Stay” live — a moment that never fails to give me goosebumps. 4. Garth Brooks, three-night stand, Target Center, 1994: He exploded onto the stage, and the crowd exploded right back at him. The connection between artist and audience was electric. 5. The Turtles/Love Is All Around You: I got a little transistor radio for my 10th birthday and I would stick it under my pillow at night in Minneapolis. I’d be so very excited when I could pick up WLS in far-away, exotic Chicago. “I feel it in my fingers, I feel it in my toes ...” and it was at that moment that the idea took hold in my brain that music and radio could transport me. That idea has never let me go. • A highly regarded song or album you’ve never heard: I haven’t listened to either The Wall or Dark Side Of The Moon in their entirety, with or without the Wizard Of Oz.• One obscure or non-country song everyone should listen to right now: Go see a Broadway show! Embrace your inner Gleek because everyone’s got one! I’m currently obsessed with The Book Of Mormon. It’s hilarity from the minds that brought you South Park.

Market Leap: Out Of The Pan,Into The PPM (continued from page 1)That’s a good outlook, according to Candy & Potter, who joined KMPS/Seattle from AC WLNK/Charlotte 14 months ago. Their four years at ‘LNK ended just as Charlotte was on the verge of becoming a PPM market. The married couple was already fine-tuning their show in preparation for the methodology’s advent. Work leading up to and, finally, in PPM while in Seattle taught them two valuable lessons: “Realize the company has people that are smarter than you when it comes to PPM,” Potter says, “and always ask ‘Why?’ because nobody has all the answers.” The biggest change in execution was the mechanics of getting into and out of breaks. “It used to be, ‘Say the calls, positioner, name, phone number and time,’” Potter says. “Now you have to get their attention in three seconds or you lose them.” Celebrity news became a casualty. “Because of the Internet, listeners can get any story we have on their phone,” Candy explains. “The exception is when you’re talking to the person who is actually part of the story.” The balancing act for Candy was learning to bring her part of the equation – chaos and spontaneity – while maintaining what she describes as “PPM basics that lead to good radio: Get their attention fast without rambling on about things people don’t care about.” The common denominator in both major market transitions is KSON PD Kevin Callahan. Prior to joining KSON in October, he oversaw four markets for Pamal, including Albany, NY, where Candy & Potter did mornings at Top 40 WFLY prior to their move to Charlotte. “This could be anti-climactic,” Callahan replies

Jason Michael Carroll Numbers Cracker Barrel/Quarterback/GrassRoots) Carroll is the first former Cracker Barrel employee to release music through the company. His prior hit “Alyssa Lies” closes the 12-track collection, which is otherwise comprised of new material.

Eric Church Chief (EMI Nashville) Church holed up in North Carolina cabin for a month to write the follow-up to 2009’s gold-certified Carolina. “In shutting down phones and TV, it allowed the creative process to open up and flow,” he says. “Your daily life can choke that off with the stresses and pressures that you have.” Jay

Joyce produced and Arturo Buenahora, Jr. executive produced.

Randy Montana Randy Montana (Mercury) Montana has co-writing credit on all but one of 11-tracks, including the lead single “1,000 Faces.” Tom Douglas, Jonathan Singleton, his father Billy Montana and the late Joshua Ragsdale are among the collaborators. Joyce, again, produced.

Ronnie Milsap Country Again (Milsap Music Group/BPG) The lead single “If You Don’t Want Me To (The Freeze)” closes Milsap’s 12-track follow-up to 2009’s gospel collection. Eddie Stubbs executive produced.

People Let Me Tell You ‘Bout My Fest Friend: Radio and label pros gather for a group shot at the Flatts Fest show in Cincinnati Friday night. when asked of the secrets to successful transition. “A good morning show is a good morning show, despite how you measure it.” The differences are subtle, he says. “You don’t get a vote anymore, and PPM is less forgiving. I’ll be looking for [John & Tammy] to set up every element so the payoff is up front, whether it’s funny or informative.” The bottom line “is delivering good content. That wins, no matter what.” In addition to the PPM “learning and unlearning” transition to which Lee referred earlier, a totally new market waits to be mastered. Pointing out that that San Diego is a cultural polar opposite to Madison might be understating the case. John & Tammy

are looking to listeners to help educate them on the nuances of Southern California. That strategy worked for Flint when he first joined a Country station years ago. He made no secret of his lack of knowledge about the music or artists and listeners quickly and gladly came to his rescue. Similarly, Candy & Potter organized “group dates” when they first arrived in Charlotte. “We tried to create events where we could hang out with listeners,” Potter says. “The worst thing you can do is try and pretend you’ve lived there your whole life.” The good news in San Diego is that Callahan “has yet to find anybody who’s from here.” That should negate any concerns of a Midwest inflection in John & Tammy’s delivery. “We’re definitely going to let people know they’re transplants” Callahan says. In fact, MD and prior morning host Brooks O’Brian “still has a little of her native Minnesota in her.” Additionally, the summer is shaping up as the busiest in years for concerts and activities, so the new team has no choice but to quickly learn the area. Both are anxious about getting on the air again after sitting out for nearly a month. And while there’s pressure, it’s different from when they joined WMAD six years ago, shortly after the station’s launch. The pair had crossed the street after five years at WWQM, and Lee says, “We felt pressure to succeed right away and carry the station.” That won’t be necessary at KSON, which posted its best-ever PPM cume and share numbers in May. What will be most familiar is what brings John & Tammy to San Diego in the first place: their show. A few weeks after announcing the move to KSON, Steph Peters, their longtime producer at WMAD, was hired to join them in the same role, something Lee calls “a blessing.” Flint is feeling blessed, too: “I know so many people in radio who hate it right now, but I feel so fortunate to have this opportunity and to have left WMAD in such a positive way.” Wisconsin native Lee sums up the KSON opportunity this way: “We’re not working in a cheese factory, which I actually did when I was younger. We’re very lucky to call what we do our job, so I’d better listen to suggestions and recommendations. I don’t want to work in a cheese factory again.”
