Thought Leadership in Project Management

This month’s article presents the study done by the author Henry Hornstein entitled The integration of project management and organizational change management is now a necessity. Hornstein carried out a literature review to show that project managers have to be familiar with organizational change management (OCM), which can impact the success of project implementation.

Change management is described by the author from the literature review as the process of continually renewing an

organization’s direction, structure, and capabilities to serve the ever-changing needs of external and internal customers (Moran &

Brightman, 2001). Taking the previous into account and after an exhaustive examination of literature, the author found out that

much research has been carried out in order to spot the elements that outline the project success, but there has been insufficient

research effort to measure the impact that the factors related to change management have on practice along the project lifecycle

and its success. Even though some references were found specifically on the subjects of strategy, impact of organizational culture,

behavioral competencies of the project managers and leadership, which shows an emergent attention to these concepts in the

project management field.

The author supports the idea that so far the involvement of human factors in project management literature has not been

sufficient. An example given by the author in this regard is the study performed by Kaminsky (2012) who investigated the impact

of non-technical leadership practices (e.g., taking responsibility, giving work back to people and getting stakeholders to embrace

change) on IT project success and determined that these qualities were not integrated with technical practices (e.g., risk

management and time management). Based on the literature, the author mentions that project success is highly influenced by the

grade of acceptance that employees have regarding the changes that come along with the project implementation, in terms of

leadership, organizational resistance, culture matching, ethics, user/customer satisfaction. In this respect, the author supports the

idea that project managers should incorporate in their expertise the knowledge and skills to conduct organizational and behavioral

change. One of the aspects mentioned by the author to reach this knowledge is the change leadership which allows the leader to

align and motivate people affected by the change so they are prepared to support and adopt it (Kotter, 1996, 2008).

As stated by the author, change is an expected outcome of project implementations and the management of change will

determine in great extent the project success. In the literature reviewed by the author, a differentiation between project management

and change management was found, in regards to the skills and competencies they require. However, they are complementary

and mutually supportive disciplines that contribute to the project success. The author emphasizes that the competition between

change managers and project/program managers should transform to cooperation to improve project implementation.

Finally, the author concludes that project management educators should expose the project managers to the potential

influence of change, including people-related matters and moreover, promote the development of skills for OCM at the theoretic

and practical levels. In this concern, the author considers that OCM resources should be included in project teams, as an additional

role that will have project activities change management-specific. At last, all organizations, project managers’ educators and project

managers should expand their view to recognize the value of OCM in project success.

PMI Houston Scholarships

PMI Houston Awards $40,000 in “40 Celebrating 40” Scholarships Scholarships totaling $40,000 were awarded to 20 undergraduate and graduate students in the Houston area to commemorate PMI Houston’s 40th anniversary in 2014. Sam Houston State University Vice Provost Dr. Richard Eglsaer, and faculty members Dr. Janis Warner, Dr. William Ellegood and Dr. Pamela Zelbst recognized the scholarship recipients at a special ceremony in January. Sharon Greiff, PMIH Senior Vice President External Operations, and David Thomas, 2014 Academic Outreach Director, attended the recognition ceremony on behalf of the PMI Houston Chapter. The application process is competitive and selection is based on the student’s GPA, college transcript, resume, recommendation letter and essay. In addition, students are required to study a subject related to project management and live and study within 100 miles of Houston. “We had given scholarships before, but never for such a large amount,” noted David Thomas. “The 2015 Board of Directors voted in January to award the same total amount this year and expect quite a few applications.” Two of the “40 Celebrating 40” scholarship recipients study at the University of Houston, and 18 are students at Sam Houston State University. SHSU student Devin McCullough expressed gratitude for the scholarship. “It is an honor to be recognized by PMI for the work I have been putting towards studying operations management, and I am very grateful for the opportunity that has been provided.” Johann Lane, a Finance student and military veteran added, “I am getting married in March and have 2 little girls. My family and I greatly appreciate everything!” Several students also expressed an interest in pursuing PMI certification. This year’s scholarships will be awarded through the recently established PMI Houston Educational Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization.

Reinvent Management: Go to the Gemba

By Sanjiv Augustine

From Lean management, we’ve heard the exhortation to, “go to the gemba.”

Getting management to perform a gemba walk is gaining popularity in agile

circles, and of course, has been a key Lean technique for decades. As the excellent article Going

to the Gemba points out, the gemba walk is not strolling around and glad handing people. To

Part of the mission at LitheSpeed is to reach back to the community in some small manner, each

resonated with us, but of course, we didn’t quite know where to begin. Ideas were tossed around,
