SOMETHING FOREVERYONE AT THEWINDRIFT

It seems that Windrift in Avalon justkeeps getting better every year.Windrift’s General Manager, PeteCompare, has a lot to be excitedabout this year as he unveilsrefurbished hotel rooms, newoutdoor spaces, and quite possiblythe grandest banquet room on thebeach in New Jersey.

Last Friday, Jaime and I visitedWindrift. We enjoyed a greatdinner in Windrift’s fine diningrestaurant. Not only is the food anepicurean delight but the wine list isextensive. Windrift is unique. Inaddition to a fine dining restaurant, there is brick oven pizza, sushi bars, multiple beverage bars placedthough-out, live entertainment, atruly spa like swimming pool withwaterfall, and of course very welldesigned and appointed hotelrooms.

Pete took us on a tour of the newsecond floor. We were simply awe-struck by the expansive design andsoaring ceilings. The views of thebeach and ocean only added to thebeauty of this room. Pete tells usthat this room will also be used forweddings. Anyone lucky enough tohave their reception in this roomwill surely have a memorable one.

A new outside bar on the secondlevel presents great panoramicviews of the beach, ocean, andAvalon. The renovated rooms arevery well designed. We stayed in asuite that had two rooms, two fullbaths, a full kitchen, and twobalconies. The bath connected tothe main bedroom was huge with avery large tiled shower that had abench and two shower heads. I amnot normally a fan of modern designbut The Windrift designers havewon me over. The design is clean, elegant, and roomy.

Windrift offers us the ability to treatourselves very well without goingvery far at all. If you want a trulyrefined but still warm and friendlybeach weekend or vacation,Windrift is “Cooler By A Mile”

This week we will explore the world of theOskar Blues Brewery in Longmont, Colorado.Oskar Blues offers six different beers includingtheir most famous, Dave’s Pale Ale, G’NightAle (formerly Gordon’s Ale) an Imperial Redand a Double IPA. Their beers are only offeredin cans and kegs, and hearing this made mepause with flashbacks to my early days ofdrinking yellow fizzy stuff. However, Mattassured me that the cans are all made with awater-based lining that prevents the beer fromtaking on any metal flavor. After all, a keg isjust a giant metal can, isn’t it? Plus, the beerstays fresher longer because the can does notport any light which is known to damage beer. The idea is to pour the beer from the can into aglass to emulate the on-tap experience, anyway, so I decided to give it a try. I testedout a Dale’s Pale Ale poured into a glass (or,rather, a 2oz plastic Beerfest tasting cup) andconfirmed that there was no way I would everhave known that it came out of an aluminumcan. So whenever you need a great on-the-gobeer in a can, turn to Oskar Blues and starttrying out some of their craft selections!
