Armstrong launches RIBA-approved CPD on eco-friendly systemsHot on the heels of its launch of the eco-friendly CoolZone system detailed on page 7, Armstrong Ceilings has introduced a RIBA-approved CPD on the use of the PCM (Phase Change Material) the concept is based on.The CPD “Using phase change materials in construction for a more sustainable built environment” is designed to help architects, interior designers and clients better understand where and how PCMs can be used to create a more energy-efficient and comfortable environment and how they play a role in supporting high-performing sustainable properties.

Formulated specifically to meet the requirements of RIBA’s core curriculum in terms of “Climate: sustainable architecture” and “Designing and building it: design, construction, technology and engineering”, the CPD advises on the how, what, where and when of PCMs in new-build and refurbishment projects in the office, education, healthcare, commercial and retail sectors particularly.

The CPD also includes a video that brings the CoolZone concept to life. Reader Reply 5

Taking on tendersKnowing how your distributor can contribute to and facilitate the successful delivery of a project is often key to winning tenders, and making a profit on the jobs that you do win. In a Future Vision exclusive, CPD’s partitioning specialist Greg Fletcher explains how to use distributors to get the best out of every tender opportunity....

The reason that the term ‘distributor’ has superseded ‘supplier’ in our profession is that the latter is in many ways a misnomer. ‘Supplier’ indicates that the relationship between contractor and distributor is a simple two-way process: the contractor requests a certain product, at a certain time, for an agreed price, and the supplier ensures that said product was delivered accordingly. In fact, the modern supply chain has evolved far beyond this simple process of supply and demand – it is a process of remarkable intricacy, complexity and logistical expertise, where not only the distributor’s role has become increasingly involved, but the level of input and interaction required from the contractor has also increased. This is not a requirement by distributors to make their lives easier – the fact is that, if contractors and distributors do not demonstrate from the off that they can work in a streamlined and ‘joined up’ way, contractors will not win tenders in the first place. Early engagementWhen contractors tender for a project, distributors should be engaged with at the earliest possible opportunity. Contractors are often wary of involving distributors until they feel they themselves completely understand the parameters of a project, but they are missing a trick. The best distributors have an unrivalled knowledge of what products will work best in different situations, and this insight can be invaluable in not only deciphering how to deliver a complicated project, but ‘value engineering’ it to deliver optimum cost-effectiveness and return on investment – a clear differentiator in the tender process. In dealing with a distributor’s estimators, contractors must ensure that enough information is provided to facilitate an accurate and realistic quote for work that needs to be undertaken. Not doing so is a false economy – any additional work, any unforeseen complication, any unexpected scheduling requirement will only serve to delay works and cause additional costs further down the line, or worse, damage

the reputation of the contractor. What’s more, this free flow of information creates a more open, well-thought and accurate tender, which will only add to its potency. Keeping to the scheduleDistributors can add real value when it comes to establishing an accurate schedule for a project, and demonstration that their expertise has been used intelligently will contribute significantly to the robustness and validity of a tender. More than any part of the supply chain, the distributor will know delivery requirements for each product, whether phased or bulk deliveries should be used, how to store and handle products and how long each step of the process will take. Again, though, this expertise can only be exploited if the distributor is aware of project-specific requirements and constraints. By far the most significant potential impact on a distributor’s lead times is specific performance requirements. If our estimators at CPD had only one question to ask about a project, it would be whether there were performance requirements – it will have major implications on lead times and associated costs, and must be specified by contractors as early as possible to avoid problems further down the line. The right product for the jobThe same goes for the products themselves. Using prefabricated partitioning systems constructed off-site, for example, may superficially provide significant cost-savings by reducing fixing times, easing on-site pressures and reducing waste, but they come at a premium. It is by no means a certainty that they will work out cheaper than standard solutions when the project is complete. Contractors must remember that the best product that they can think of is not always the right product for the job. You can only be certain you have the ‘right’ product if you know all of the solutions available to you, and how they will perform given the specific parameters of the job – something that can only be gained from

experience. Good distributors will, because of the very nature of their work, have an unrivalled knowledge of the products in their offering and how they can be applied in different situations, and contractors can use this expertise to shore up any gaps in their own knowledge about the plethora of products available on the market. Overpromising and under delivering is a risky businessExperienced contractors know only too well that tenders are not always awarded on the basis of cost alone, it is ultimately the assurance that a project can be delivered on time and within budget that will decide where the order will be placed. It all comes down to trust, and the experience and input that a good distributor can bring to a project goes a long way to developing the confidence not only with the customer, but within the industry as a whole. For any contractor, having this experience at their disposal not only improves their own operations, it encourages confidence in the customer that the promises made at tender stage will be kept. Of course, the customer knows that ‘talk is cheap and promises are easy’ – contractors must therefore do everything they can to demonstrate their ability to deliver the project, and a robust working relationship with distributors will go a long way to achieving this and securing valuable tenders.

Rotherham United FC’s new home, the £22m New York Stadium, opened in July 2012, and makes a strong design statement for stadia of this kind. The town is very proud of its new facility. Rotherham chairman Tony Stewart understands the broader impact of such a significant and positive development in the town, saying “Everything’s coming together for Rotherham as a town and as a football club.” (BBC News on line, 15th March 2012) The name came about because the stadium is said to be placed in an area of Rotherham which manufactured fire hydrants for New York City, although some believe the area was once called New York, a name later borrowed across the pond.

Mr Stewart said the Rotherham United board wanted the venue to be more than a football stadium. “Most football clubs struggle to afford their own existence so we thought we would put effort into a seven day a week functionality, and host banquets, weddings, conferences, a gym, hotel and pub.”

CPD and ceilings manufacturer, OWA, were proud to be involved in the project, supplying 4000m2 of high performance acoustic ceilings, and recommending different ceilings systems to provide suitable acoustic performance in each space. Ceilings in the main hospitality areas were lined with OWAcoustic Premium Sinfonia, a range of Class A and Class B ceilings designed to provide comfortable acoustic conditions in noisy environments. OWAcoustic premium ceilings also provide at least one hour fire resistance, unlike some soft wool ceiling types.

OWA’s Rachel Whittington was able to consult with, and to advise the architects, builder and CPD Sheffield customer and sub contractor, Ace Partitions and Ceilings Limited. Jim Ellis, Director of

Ace, commented “Everyone was pleased with the choice of ceiling finishes, and with the fire and acoustic benefits they deliver for the stadium. We all feel very confident to work with CPD, OWA and with Rachel again”. The ceiling offered cost savings yet remained a high quality system, and was supplied on time and within budget, through the local branch of CPD in Sheffield.

The full range of OWA ceiling products is available from your local CPD Distribution branch.

CPD and Armstrong Ceiling Tiles Recycling - Don’t waste an opportunityJanuary 2013 will see the launch of a recycling initiative from CPD Distribution in association with Armstrong World Industries. The amount of waste and energy which can be saved simply by recycling ceiling tiles at the end of a project is staggering. Just 10,000m2 of recycled tiles equates to a saving of 590 tonnes of raw materials, and the energy saved manufacturing new ceiling tiles could power a home for over six years.

CPD and Armstrong have teamed up to enhance two existing mineral ceiling tile recycling schemes from Armstrong.

End of Life ProgrammeThe first initiative is the End of Life programme, where unwanted mineral ceiling tiles are collected and manufactured into new Armstrong ceiling tiles.

Off-Cut RecyclingThe second initiative is the Off-Cut programme where off-cut tiles are collected and returned to manufacture new Armstrong ceiling tiles.

Both initiatives are supported by CPD’s national network of storage facilities and fleet of vehicles with mechanical offload. Now Armstrong’s scheme has been enhanced by CPD’s involvement. This means the minimum size of job which can be recycled has been reduced further. CPD has a robust waste recycling procedure supported by an expert team and equipment, which ensures ceiling tile waste transfer is efficient and responsible.

What are the benefits? There are multiple benefits to recycling ceiling tiles.

• It helps the environment as it diverts waste from landfill sites and saves energy on manufacturing new ceiling tiles

• A cost saving as for every 250m2 of ceiling tiles recycled customers can save on landfill costs.

• The initiative also contributes to recognised schemes relating to sustainability in buildings; helps with BREEAM certification and SKA ratings and also fulfils your customers’ supply chain responsibility to the environment.

How does it work? CPD and Armstrong are fully committed to providing a straightforward service, in just 5 easy steps:

1. Contact your local branch of CPD, email [email protected] or visit www.ceilings.co.uk/recycling and provide details of the recycling opportunity (minimum 200m2)

2. CPD will confirm your enquiry

3. Armstrong or CPD will undertake a site visit to ensure product is suitable for recycling. Suitability of the product for recycling will be confirmed.

4. CPD will confirm details of when the correctly packaged product can be collected and arrange return to Armstrong’s Team Valley manufacturing plant where the material is used to manufacture new ceiling tiles

5. You will be issued with a certificate of recycling

Farnborough Airshow

Horse Guards Parade

What can be recycled? End of Life recycling ceiling tiles need to be Armstrong branded, pulpable mineral fibre tiles and if you’re unsure then your local branch will be able to help. Tiles must have been manufactured on or after 1st January 2000, which is easy to check as all Armstrong tiles have a manufactured date printed on the back.

Ceiling tile recycling on every scaleThe CPD and Armstrong ceiling tiles recycling scheme has already delivered fantastic results for customers in terms of cost saving, environmental benefits and ease of disposal. Below are some of the recent projects we have worked on.

Farnborough AirshowOne of the largest jobs CPD has dealt with was the Farnborough Airshow, Hampshire, where branches at Portsmouth and Twickenham helped Armstrong Ceilings quadruple its recycling of materials from the Airshow.

Armstrong tiles were supplied for more than 20 corporate hospitality and business chalets which are utilised during the show week, taking five weeks to build and fit out and one week to dismantle. The ceilings were fitted by Hampshire based ceilings and partitioning contractor RSD Systems. Roy Gleiwitz, Armstrong Business Development Manager, outlines the importance of CPD’s involvement: “Farnborough Airshow is one of Armstrong’s largest End of Life project in the UK. It was therefore essential that the site conditions and the lack of access to loading facilities did not prevent materials being returned to our Team Valley plant. Without the help and resource provided by CPD, this process would have become very difficult. The two CPD branches were instrumental in ensuring materials were returned without a hitch.”

The used 10,000m2 (38 tonnes) of tiles from the Airshow were returned to Armstrong’s manufacturing facility in Team Valley, broken down into slurry and

used as the raw material for new tiles in the pioneering End of Life recycling scheme.

Kier Head OfficeIt’s not just large projects which benefit from CPD and Armstrong’s ceilings recycling scheme.

CPD Bedford recently collected 1,240m2 of End of Life Armstrong ceiling tiles from Kier’s head office, Tempsford Hall, Bedfordshire. Tiles were returned to Team Valley where they will become new Armstrong ceiling tiles. This has saved approximately two tonnes of material from going to landfill plus created the equivalent weight of raw materials. A saving of approximately £600 in skip costs.

Horse Guards ParadeThe most recent ceiling tile recycling project CPD worked on was the prestigious Horse Guards Parade in Whitehall London. In summer 2012 Horse Guards Parade was a high profile temporary sporting venue for beach volleyball and organisers were keen to reduce waste and recycle where possible.

CPD Distribution’s Twickenham branch and its customer, Solution Interiors, were on hand to supply 600m2 of Armstrong Dune Supreme 600 x 600 tiles and matching grid to the Horse Guards Parade arena. Once the beach volleyball competition was over, CPD Twickenham organised the collection of four pallets of ceiling tiles which were returned to Armstrong’s Team Valley plant where the materials were turned into brand new tiles. A saving of approximately £384 on skip costs.

Full details of the recycling scheme are available from January 2013 and there is a full list of terms and conditions on our website www.ceilings.co.uk/recycling

The £415k refurbishment project led by Paragon Interiors Group plc won the coveted AIS Interior Gold Award (sponsored by BG) for their fit out work at Loughborough University. As the focus was on a contemporary, inspiring look for the workspace, the project demanded innovative products which Paragon looked to CPD to provide.

CPD’s reputation for its performance, cost and reliability of service as well as stocking a superb range of products at competitive prices, meant that CPD was the obvious choice to supply the materials. CPD supplied a range of specialist products including Armstrong Dune Supreme 600 x 600 Tegular 24mm grid ceilings, fire cladding to beams, Speedline drywall studs, a single glazed Tenon Vitrage partition with a glass door and solid core beech doors.

The eight week project included the strip out, design and build of existing office space to make the space inspirational and motivational to the staff members who use the Facilities Management Offices. The bright and light offices were designed to enhance the working environment and

create a fun and motivational space which would inspire the people who work in it. Paragon never lost sight of the need for the space to be practical and the design incorporates versatile areas such as breakout spaces and meeting areas.

The clever ceiling design involved suspended and MF ceilings and bulkheads which formed a 3D effect on the ceiling within the open plan area, which not only looked distinctive but also offered access to the ceiling’s electrical and mechanical services. MF curved walls, orangebox pods and timber slats were used to create a number of private breakout areas. These breakout areas are divided from the main open plan office area by the use of a single glazed frameless Tenon Vitrage partition and door which allows light to flow through both areas.

The design made the most of the building’s existing features, including the striking exposed steel beams located in the ceilings and corridors which are now incorporated into the contemporary design.

Mark Ross, Paragon Interiors’ Senior Site Manager, was delighted with CPD’s work

on the project. He said, “CPD provided excellent service and communication throughout the whole project. They had a complete understanding of our requirements and were able to meet very tight deadlines with their fast track products and quality materials.”

Kate Underhill from CPD said, “The job ran extremely smoothly thanks to the excellent lines of communication between Paragon and CPD. Having worked on a number of projects together in the past we have developed a great working relationship. Paragon are a forward thinking company that CPD can work with to find the most innovative and effective products for a project.”

CPD and Rockfon on civic duty in Weston Super MareCPD Bristol supplied Rockfon ceilings that were specified as part of a major refurbishment to the Town Hall in Weston Super Mare. The £9.7million project for North Somerset Council has transformed the Town Hall into a modern public facility, bringing more council services into one space and improving disabled access. It also houses a new public library, internet cafe and payment kiosks for council services.

A primary goal of the refurbishment was to make the building more cost-effective to run and to reduce carbon emissions by 61%. This will be achieved in part by optimising the thermal mass of the building, allowing warm air to circulate freely over exposed concrete surfaces. Excess heat is absorbed then released as temperatures drop, helping to reduce heating and ventilation costs.

These hard, sound reflective surfaces must be left exposed, which often results in poor acoustics. Within the Town Hall, the open plan offices on all floors are also open to a central atria, which is the full height of the building. To help overcome these issues, 120 Rockfon Eclipse ceiling islands have been installed, supplied

by CPD Distribution Bristol. The islands are ideal for thermal mass applications because they allow air to circulate whilst absorbing sound from both sides of the panel. They fully exploit the acoustic islands’ principle, whilst minimising the number of islands required to achieve the desired acoustic performance.

Acoustic testing was carried out to measure the reverberation time both prior to refurbishment, then again on completion of the project. Microphones and sound sources were used at different heights and locations to assess the acoustics in the office. Red Twin Ltd of Bristol undertook the measurements in accordance with the methods described in BS EN ISO 3382:2008, using the interrupted noise technique.

Ian Matthews, Director at Red Twin, confirmed the results: “The outcome of our testing before and after the installation of Rockfon’s Eclipse ceiling rafts has shown a considerable reduction in the reverberation time”

Rockfon’s ceiling islands can significantly improve levels of sound absorption helping to create a more pleasant and productive working environment for

staff and visitors. To hear the results for yourself, watch the YouTube video at www.rockfon.co.uk/office acoustics

Dealing with site waste can be a complex and expensive business, with ever-tightening legislation and increasingly demanding environmental obligations, not to mention ever-rising costs for landfill. Now Rockfon has simplified things with its enhanced and extended upcycling service.

Rockfon has been upcycling their own stone wool end-of-life ceiling tiles and off-cuts for many years. But now they will also accept wet felt mineral fibre ceiling tile waste of any age, in any quantity, from any refurbishment project, when Rockfon products are installed in its place.

To guide specifiers, clients and contractors through the process, Rockfon has produced a number of resources, including a dedicated web page at www.rockfon.co.uk/upcycling. Here you will find a short video entitled “Things are looking up for the environment”, a guide to Upcycling, and an infographic outlining the whole process from receipt of waste materials through to production of new stone wool products, coupled with facts and evidence of Rockfon’s rock-solid sustainability strategy and new brand positioning “Create and Protect”.

Rockfon’s upcycling service diverts waste from landfill, and helps main contractors achieve their zero waste to landfill targets. It also offers potential cost savings too, with a small gate fee of just £40 per tonne compared to costs as high as £120 per tonne at landfill.

Rockfon goes beyond simple recycling by upcycling waste into new superior stone wool

products of the same high quality as those made from virgin raw materials. Upcycling with Rockfon also contributes to the Ceilings Sustainability Partnership’s ‘Resource Efficiency Action Plan’ guidelines to reduce the environmental impact of the ceilings industry, by reducing waste and finding alternative uses for it.

By preventing stone wool and mineral fibre ceiling tiles from going to landfill, Rockfon is protecting the external environment. By installing new Rockfon stone wool ceilings with their holistic benefits, they are helping to create better indoor environments. These benefits include the highest European classification for fire safety (A1); up to 100% humidity resistance, offering dimensional

stability to ensure no sagging or deflection over time; excellent acoustic qualities (the majority of Rockfon products have the highest, Class A, sound absorption rating); tiles are all lightweight, easy to cut and handle, and meet the safest E1 classification for indoor air quality and health.

Rockfon take both their own and their supply chain partners and clients responsibility to protect the environment very seriously. Made from naturally occurring, renewable Diabase rock,Rockfon stone wool products make a constructive contribution to the environment to help you achieve your own CSR and waste to landfill targets, and build more efficient buildings.

Durability and Security for School WashroomsLilian Baylis Technology School is located in Lambeth, South London, and although the school is only six years old, the washrooms had been significantly damaged. The school wanted to upgrade the washrooms to rectify the damage and to ensure that in future they would remain safe and attractive for students to use. The main contractors MJ Ferguson chose CPD Luton to complete the project because of CPD’s experience of handling similar projects and ability to immediately source the right products for such a project.

To minimise disruption, work took place over a four week period in the summer holidays and Mark Clayton Smith ,the Tenon Washrooms product manager ensured deliveries and installation ran to schedule by organising pre-planning meetings with the school and the main contractor. Mark said “We spent some time in project meetings on selecting the right products and layouts prior to the order being placed. Once these were agreed, everyone knew what they needed to do to ensure that the job ran smoothly. It always helps when we’re all working towards the same goal.”

Security was a top priority with this project so all the washroom panelling had to be lockable and the traditional basins were replaced with ‘hole in the wall’ hand wash units. Mark commented “We provided technical expertise when it came to the spec as the materials chosen for the six washrooms had to be durable enough to stand up to wear and tear from hundreds of school children.”

The Tenon Washrooms Premier One range of cubicles used in this project has been professionally engineered to withstand abuse and to be easily maintained, two key elements for school washrooms. The Solid Grade Laminate duct sets and Wallgate hand wash units were also chosen for their durability. Aesthetics were not compromised for durability on this project as the attractive washrooms combined bold colours and a spacious layout for the students of Lilian Baylis Technology School.

Mark said “Working closely with Chris Gates at MJ Ferguson and his team meant the project was a success as we were able to schedule the deliveries of all the washrooms over a pre-agreed 10 day period. Working in this way meant that the fitting schedule was maintained and the project was delivered on time.”

Burgess AP and CPD are “zoned in” to John Lewis store in Cheadle

The original store, which was completed in 1995, incorporated a Burgess standard plain clip-in system consisting of 600 x 600mm tiles in standard white.

In 2012 Brooker Flynn Architects created a total new concept for John Lewis Cheadle. This £19m refurbishment project included the first John Lewis Beauty retreat. This spa experience offers customers a chance to relax and re-energise with a selection of treatments. The refurbishment also includes a waitress service restaurant called The Kitchen.

As part of this major refurbishment the architect required a solution that could easily incorporate the latest lighting and M & E systems throughout the store. The Burgess clip-in system was deemed the most appropriate. The specification used incorporated a plank system of 1200 x 300mm panels in a ‘two tone’ colour scheme designed to allow ‘zoned areas’ for the placement of shelving and racking in-store. This allows the customer’s eyes to be drawn to the merchandising areas under the darker tiles whilst providing a pleasant contrast which adds to the aesthetics of the refurbishment.

Burgess AP working closely with both the ceiling contractor Mike Penney Ltd and their preferred distributor CPD Liverpool ensured the smooth completion of the programme from initial order to hand over. This required a number of site visits during installation as the schedule constantly changed due to the client wanting the store

to remain operational as much as possible. Burgess AP and CPD were, in some instances, required to supply tiles with only 1 or 2 working days’ notice. To achieve this Burgess had to manufacture ahead of the installation schedule which was only possible due to the excellent co-operation of Mike Penney Ltd.

The success of this project saw Burgess AP, Mike Penny Ltd and CPD work together on another John Lewis refurbishment at their Norwich store.

Eco-friendly ceiling tiles from Armstrong feature in the BRE’s Innovation Parks in Watford and Ravenscraig. Energy-saving tiles from Armstrong Ceilings are at the forefront of the BRE’s (Building Research Establishment) latest Innovation Park in Scotland.

Armstrong’s CoolZone system features on the ceiling of the main seminar area of the visitors’ centre at the heart of the 1,125-acre Ravenscraig Regeneration Project.

The centre is the first completed building on the BRE’s two-acre Innovation Park. Designed by BRE Scotland and Kraft Architecture, the carbon-neutral, closed-panel timber-framed building represents the latest in off-site manufacture, technology integration and building management.

The CoolZone system incorporates BASF’s Micronal® PCM (Phase Change Material) into Armstrong’s plain metal ceiling tiles. This material – microscopic polymer capsules containing a wax storage medium - is embedded in gypsum and then encased in the metal tile.

On heating during the day and cooling at night, the wax melts and solidifies. In this way the internal temperature is regulated, ensuring a stable and comfortable environment in which to live and work.

In tests, the CoolZone tiles delayed the onset of air conditioning by approximately four to five hours in an average office. Not only can this save around 40% of the HVAC energy costs and reduce peaks in demand for air conditioning but it can also help to improve the thermal comfort for the occupants.

Some 40m2 of the reversible system, which is also wholly recyclable, has been used at Ravenscraig which was officially

opened in September by Cabinet Secretary for Infrastructure and Capital Investment Alex Neil.

Designed to achieve a BREEAM “Outstanding” rating, the cost-effective, super-insulated building also features zoned lighting and heating systems, an air source heat pump, solar water heating, an array of photovoltaic panels and an extensive building management system to monitor and manage the building’s performance.

The park showcases the future of Scottish construction, featuring 10 full-scale homes and buildings that demonstrate indigenous designs, materials, techniques and technologies that will address the major issues faced by the local and global built environment such as reducing carbon emissions.

BRE Scotland director Rufus Logan said: “The Park is all about innovation and applying this to the challenges we face as a society, not only around reducing carbon emissions but creating a better quality of life for our people.”

As well as at Ravenscraig, where CoolZone was installed by CPD Glasgow customer Soundtex Ceilings, 20m2 of Armstrong Ceilings’ CoolZone system has been installed as a pilot test by the BRE throughout the Victorian Terrace at its flagship Innovation Park at Watford.

This stable block has been transformed into three energy-efficient homes to create a living refurbishment laboratory for testing current and energy products, materials, design solutions and installation techniques that make solid-wall homes more energy efficient and affordable to heat.

CoolZone products are featured on www.ceilings.co.uk along with the full range of Armstrong ceiling products.

CPD and Knauf Danoline create space for 34 floors of students

With its 34 floors the newly built Student Accommodation located at Great Marlborough Street in the higher education precinct of Manchester is quite amazing.

Student Castle is behind the project and architects Hodder + partners are in charge of the construction. In order to meet the requirements of modern students, Student Castle altered the traditional student accommodation by introducing bigger beds, air conditioning, internet, and TV etc.

Established in 2010, Student Castle has already set up a similar project in Newcastle and two others are under construction in Cardiff and Bristol. Corridors with Danotile on all 34 floorsCPD proposed Danotile tegular from Knauf Danoline, a product range known for being a robust ceiling tile able to withstand tough cleaning processes and disinfection. It was also chosen in order to upgrade the quality of the interior design. The total quantity was 1000m2 of Danotile Tegular tiles 1170mm x 600mm specifically

for corridor applications which was delivered through CPD in Manchester working to the tight delivery requirements of the project to ensure speedy completion. The project was completed at the end of September 2012 ready to welcome some 500 new students for the coming school year.

A Seamless Fit Out for Office Space in Central London

CPD’s (CSS) London Heathrow branch recently played a key role in the refurbishment of the i2 Offices in central London. i2 Office specialise in serviced offices and are a regular customer of main contractors, Construction & Shopfitting Ltd (C&S).

A section of the i2 Offices in London required refurbishing to be sublet to executives from the Direct Line Group (DLG), who had exacting standards. The pressure was on to create offices with a modern and professional feel in just three weeks. CSS was chosen to provide the solution as C&S was confident they could provide the solution as quickly as DLG were expecting. CPD (CSS) was chosen by C&S to provide materials for the project because of their expertise and ability to meet C&S’s delivery schedule. Having worked together on numerous previous projects, CPD (CSS) had proved they could keep pace with the company’s busy schedule.

CPD’s Dave Sheppard helped C&S select the correct system for this project which was complex due to the need for getting floor to ceiling sized materials into the building. The products selected were the Tenon Fire & Sound System and the Tenon Double Glazed Vitrage (dB) 12mm toughened double glazed seamless glass, with integral full height glass doors, which is an unusual product combination that required a close working relationship between CPD (CSS) and C&S to install successfully. Speedline metal systems 75mm stud and track was used to complement the Tenon Fire & Sound System. The high spec finish and use of glass gave the offices plenty of natural light and a sleek finish.

Nick Smith, C&S’s Managing Director, said, “The project itself was part of a much larger fit out which we had been doing on the second floor of 40 Gracechurch Street for i2 Office. In effect we had two different clients within the same floor, i2 Office, which was looking for us to provide their standard offering and DLG, which was looking for something with the ‘wow factor’. CPD (CSS) were already our preferred supplier and we sat down with Dave Sheppard, told him what we wanted and the CPD (CSS) team delivered exactly what was required.”

Due to the central London location, site deliveries had to be made early in the morning to allow goods to be offloaded into the site without causing disruption to surrounding roads and

businesses. Another factor to consider was that the project had to be completed within three weeks. Nick said, “As a company we deliver solutions with a very quick turnaround – the original brief was for timber frames and doors which had been supplied and fitted, however with 7 days to go the client changed their mind and wanted glass doors. Following my call to Dave on the Friday night, he met me on site Monday morning and 5 days later the glass doors were fitted. Both clients are delighted, I know it’s a cliché but it really was on time and on budget and even when the customer changed their mind, CPD (CSS) delivered the bespoke items to us so we could ensure the same deadline was kept.”

Dave Sheppard from CPD said, “This project was one of several we’ve worked on with C&S this year and our relationship with the company is going from strength to strength.”

The £20k refurbishment project was completed to schedule in September 2012.
