SHED YOUR SKIN

W HEN it comes to thinking of new ways to promote your business, it is all too easy to

get caught up in the same old offers and incentives. So now is the time to shed your skin from the Year of the Snake and embrace the Year of the Horse, by galloping over barriers and feeling the freshness of the breeze in your business.

The Chinese New Year signs are the perfect analogy for refreshing your business, so here’s ten top tips from Jordan Martin that you can use during this auspicious time to inject some unique ideas into your marketing and promotion plan:

The Chinese New Year celebrations last for fifteen days, so ensure that you plan for the relevant promotions early

on in the year. Offer discounts or trials for two full weeks starting from the 31st of January 2014.

Everybody loves a touch of good fortune right? Try making your own fortune cookies with offers or

inspirational notes inside. Or buy a generic box, and hand out a sweet gift for each customer – you could even ask them to write their name on the back of their fortune note and enter them into a free prize draw with a treatment as a gift. This is a great way to get new email addresses or phone numbers to add to your customer database too.

Traditionally, the colour red is very lucky for the Chinese, and this is celebrated by wearing red clothes,

and by hanging red decorations. So pretty-up your treatment room, but take care not to go overboard! Email your clients, letting them know that if they wear red to their appointment during these two weeks, they will receive 15% off their next treatment – this encourages a return visit and is a bit of fun, plus it’s good luck!

Continuing the use of red as a lucky theme, you could offer your clients red envelopes, each containing a

money-off voucher. Another approach is to sell the red envelopes as a way to raise money for a local charity, giving to those who need it, as well as gaining some local press and awareness for your business and for the charity. These bright red envelopes are a symbol of good luck for health and avoidance of evil.

Hang a lantern in your treatment room, to create a warm and welcoming ambience. Support this by playing

some oriental music during relevant treatments, especially for those treatments relating to China, for example acupuncture or Chinese herbal medicine. Get into the festivities by wearing an oriental headpiece, or appropriate outfit, as long as it doesn’t hinder your movement of course.

Offer incense sticks as a promotional gift with each treatment bought over a certain amount of money. Incense

is inexpensive, but is a welcome gift. Ensure you have a pleasant natural scent burning to arouse senses, without being overpowering.

Run a free prize draw with each treatment bought during these two weeks, with the prize as a meal at

the local Chinese restaurant – it is likely you can team up with the restaurant as an affiliate, so the meal will be no cost to you but will promote your business and the restaurant too.

Print out some healthy Chinese recipes and give them to your customers with a prominent incentive towards

their next purchase placed on the page. Set a time limit on the discount. You could do a ‘Bring a friend free’ offer for a mini treatment during the month of February. The recipe and incentive flyers will be fine printed from an office printer, just get your design head on, and don’t forget to add red for good luck!

Offer warm herbal teas, as clients feel more inclined to return to a place where they feel welcome.

Lastly, ensure that you email or text all of your clients with any promotions that you plan during this period, so

that your efforts bear fruits. You can also run your promotions on Twitter and Facebook if you use social media for marketing. It will not be much fun cracking open fortune cookies on your own, with fifty red envelopes unopened, and twenty cups of herbal tea going cold…remember that the power of ‘promotions’ is in telling people about them.

REMEMBER THAT THE POWER OF ‘PROMOTIONS’ IS IN TELLING PEOPLE ABOUT THEM.

Louise Jensen talks about how to embrace and accept change to bring new success to your business

BusIness – LJ’s JournaL

Greek Philosopher Hercalitus once said “there is nothing

permanent except change”. Think about it for a second. We know that life is subject to flux; that’s part of the adventure. On a personal level we accept that it’s important we embrace change. What about in business though? It’s so easy to coast and consequently stagnate.

I experienced a gnawing sense of dissatisfaction professionally last year. I didn’t feel my business represented who I was anymore, nor what I wanted to achieve. With repeat business and word of mouth referrals keeping me ticking over I had lost my drive to grow. It was definitely time for change.

I spent some time identifying my target market, establishing my long term goals, then looked objectively at what I needed to do to achieve these.

Refreshing my business had a positive impact both personally and professionally. I am now working in the area I want to be and gaining more business. If you feel ‘stuck in a rut’ check out my tips below.

Who is your target market? This is vital and often overlooked. In therapy we often want to heal the world and reach everyone but in spreading ourselves too thinly businesses can suffer. Who is your typical client? With regular CPD, experience and market changes this may be different to when you initially qualified. Find your niche and you will find different avenues in which to promote yourself.

Are you happy with your image?Does your website design link with your leaflets and business cards? Are you recognisable as a brand? Don’t feel you have to stick to the same logo, colours and fonts or even business name if they no longer serve the image you wish to present to the world. Get creative with your business identity.

Refresh your websiteWhen was the last time you updated your site? Is it still relevant to your target market? Does the home page grab attention or does it swamp the reader’s eye? Ask people whose opinions you trust to take a look and see whether it inspires them. If not, make changes and make sure you submit it to search engines - however great your site looks people need to be able to find it.

Use analyticsOnce you have a website you are happy with, monitor it regularly to see what pages people view most and what they turn off straight away. Then expand on what’s popular.

Check out your competitionAs therapists we operate in a slightly different way to other professionals with the support we share but the bottom line is we’re in business and need to generate income. You don’t have to be competitive but you need to know what else is being offered locally, how they market themselves and what they charge.

Reflect on the past yearWhat have you tried? What worked? What didn’t work? Don’t be afraid to ditch things that weren’t successful. New opportunities arise all the time.

What’s the bigger picture? It’s easy to get caught up in the day-to-day running of a business and forget the goals we once had. Where do you want to be this time next year?

Is your business consistent?Don’t be downhearted if you have a decline in business. To have a decline you must have gone through a growth at some stage. What were you doing then that you aren’t doing now?

Look out for opportunitiesMarkets are constantly changing - be open to new opportunities. Building up from your local community is a great way to get your name out there. Are there new groups and venues where you could give talks? Places to display leaflets? Events you can attend? Explore the possibilities on your doorstep. n

exhibitiNg For New sUCCess –

Adam Lomax explains how to use exhibitions to maximise business success

aNew Year often heralds new beginnings, new decisions, and most importantly, new opportunities.

As therapists it’s important for us to be self-motivated individuals, with a passion to be inventive in order to help our clients and to help our business.

This can be challenging at times – but it can also be fun! Exhibitions are fast becoming a great way to promote your business to a large number of potential clients. They can be a great way of stimulating quick growth in your business for the New Year, and offer the unique opportunity to build a rapport with your potential target audience.

Here are my tips for exhibiting successfully:

Set yourself a sensible budget and stick to itI initially learnt this the hard way, by simply booking a stand at fairs without considering the costs involved. I would often come home with less money in my pocket than I started out with. I now stick to a maximum of £65 for a table booking, as I’m certain I can make this back through attendees making an appointment with me.

Contact the organiser before

booking a standIt’s important to be sure that the fair or exhibition you are considering caters for therapists and that you are likely to get a return on your investment. You want attendees to be actively looking for the kind

of services you offer. In this respect they’re more likely to turn into

paying customers. You don’t want to exhibit

at a Mind Body and Soul Fair featuring just clairvoyants for instance, as those will be the only services that attendees

are expecting.

Book yourself in to do a free talk about

your model of therapyI’ve found this to be the most effective way to market yourself. With the beginning of a new year, people are more likely to be looking for help in making resolutions stick, and which person could help them with this. As therapists, it’s sometimes not possible to offer someone something tangible at our table. However, by doing a free talk, you have at least half an hour with a group of people listening to you, where you can explain your type of therapy and how it works. It’s also worth handing a sign up sheet around the audience to build up a contact list to follow up with.

Make the most of your business cardsA great way to get your business cards to

a large number of attendees is by stapling them to inspirational quotes, which you can print at home. By handing these out, attendees aren’t just getting a free quote to take home with them; they are also taking your contact details!

Purchase a roller banner standBanner stands can be a great investment, primarily because they offer a clear, concise, and colourful way of promoting your services. You’ll often get people who will simply walk past your table without any communication, so at least with a banner stand they’ll know what you’re offering!

Offer a short exerciseThis can be a great way of keeping your cash box ticking over throughout the day. Working in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) I offer people a short visualisation exercise, which enables them to completely change their mental state. I usually charge £5 and when the recipient sees a tangible change, they sometimes show more interest in my type of therapy and convert into full paying customers.

Exhibitions and fairs can be a great way to broaden your scope and revolutionise your business. It provides a unique opportunity to market your services directly to a number of people who are interested in holistic therapy and are looking for change. Why not make it YOUR New Year’s Resolution to book yourself a stand!

Working alone as a therapist can be challenging. Mark Shields discusses how to reap the benefits of teamwork by using the principles of team building

THE KEY PRINCIPLES OF TEAMWORK

BusIness | MarK shIeLds’ CoaChIng

30 HOLISTIC THERAPIST 2014 holistictherapistmagazine.com

AS practitioners the major-ity of us work alone and for many of the practitioners I’ve

coached over the years this can pre-sent a challenge. It can challenge us in getting motivated, there is no office to go to every day and chat to col-leagues, and we can feel lonely and isolated.

However, it is possible to forge team relationships with joint ventures, other practitioners, business partners, and professional associations. In this arti-cle we’ll be looking at the key prin-ciples of teamwork so that you can make up your own mind on how these principles could work for you in

your practice.

Human beings are hardwired to be fiercely independent, that’s why work-ing in a team doesn’t come naturally to most people. People who are used to working alone may find it difficult to adjust to the responsibilities and

restrictions that are involved in being part of a team. For some people how-ever, the benefits of teamwork will outweigh the loss of autonomy that is necessary to be part of a team.

As a new practitioner starting out in the CAM world I chose to become part of an established team. Being part of a team of professionals with a shared goal gave me the reassurance and confidence I needed to thrive. I believe that being part of something greater than me drove my passion to succeed and gave me a clear direction due to this sense of belonging so early on in my career.

A team by definition is a group of people working together to achieve the same objectives, a functioning unit of people dependent on each other; committed to collaboration and coordination. Katzenbach and Smith state in their report, The Discipline of Teams (1993), that: ‘the essence of a

Page 13: ISSUE 9 - JAN/FEB/MAR 2014 (extract from full issue)

team is common commitment. Without it, groups perform as individuals; with it, they become a powerful unit of collective performance.’

The obvious reason for forming teams is the belief that work-ing together is more effective than working alone. The success that you can achieve as a team is bigger than the success you can achieve as an individual. The major benefit of teamwork is that it allows the team to bring a number of perspectives and skills to bear to find the solution to the problem at hand. Diversity is essential in any successful team; by having em-ployees with different backgrounds and perspectives discuss-ing the pros and cons of alternative solutions the best possible solution tends to surface.

Good teams don’t typically happen by accident; hard work, commitment and some amount of struggle are usually in-volved in creating successful teams. Teams that go through the rigors of creating a cohesive group are rewarded with high-er productivity, fewer internal struggles and a more enjoyable work experience.

While I believe it’s important to have a clearly defined set of roles and responsibilities for each member, in the most pow-erful teams, tasks and responsibilities are not rigidly adhered to. Team members should be willing to cross lines to get the job done; flexibility and adaptability are instrumental for syn-ergy within the workplace. The most effective teamwork hap-pens when individual contributors harmonise their efforts and work towards a common goal.So far we can see teamwork is crucial to securing success within the workplace, but it doesn’t stop there. A diverse team allows a company the flexibility to remain competitive in the marketplace, while also offering the ability to expand into new markets or ventures without the need to hire more employees.

Adaptability allows companies to explore cross-functional re-lationships, which can inevitably improve an organisation’s ability to meet demands, yet consider new ventures to expand in various ways. In my team we encourage cross-functional relationships for this exact reason; the results are accelerated

and broadened which consequently improves business and heightens team spirit.

It is always best when making a decision to consider all op-tions before choosing the most advantageous course of ac-tion. While the benefits of teamwork are indisputable, if we were to look at the benefits of working alone as opposed to working as a team, the most constructive would be sheer speed and clarity.

One person, working alone, can make decisions and imple-ment them more quickly because there is no need to dis-cuss or explain. This inevitably allows work to proceed swiftly. However, having spoken to practitioners who choose to work individually, they expressed how it becomes increasingly lonely and demotivating, having a detrimental effect on their business and motivation to succeed.

It is clear that teamwork has its advantages, but as with most things in life, it is eventually a subjective choice. Working alone is a great way to work on particular skills and working together is a great way to learn from others.

As Aristotle stated, ‘the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.’ Put simply, synergy in teamwork is the result of work-ing together and achieving results that couldn’t be achieved by any single member of the team.

Because every individual has strengths and weaknesses, working alone can be difficult at times. In a team that is com-prised of the right people, one person’s weaknesses are com-pensated for by another person’s strengths. The result is a synergistic accomplishment of goals that is not only greater than any single team member, but also greater than the total work of the same people if they were each working alone. Just as a chain is as strong as its weakest link, a team is as strong as its weakest member.

After all the word team stands for: Together Everyone Achieves More!

Think about these key principles in relation to your practice. Learning from others is key and working with others can in-crease your proposition tenfold while presenting far greater potential benefits for the client.

PASTA’S BACK ON THE MENU!IF you’re on a gluten free or low fat

diet, it can be hard to eat the foods you want. Whether you’re on the

Dukan diet, the GI diet or the Atkins diet, pasta is almost always off limits. However, a new organic, gluten free and fat free product from Australia has launched, which promises to put pasta well and truly back on the menu, whatever your dietary needs.

Slendier is Australia’s leading brand of ‘konjac pasta’ and has already become established as a firm favourite with many who are gluten intolerant or looking to lose weight. Now it’s available on UK shelves and could potentially revolutionise the way we view pasta in this country.

WHAT IS KONJAC?Konjac is an unusual vegetable that can grow up to 25 centimetres in diameter and is a dietary staple throughout many Asian countries.

A combination of factors make konjac unique:

• Slendier is low in calories - 100g of their pasta contains just 8 calories, as opposed to around 300 calories for the real thing.

• Slendier pasta is organic, gluten free and fat free.

• It’s a source of fibre.• It delays your digestion, keeping you

feeling full and satisfied for longer.• It takes just one minute to prepare

and when added to sauce tastes as good as traditional pasta.

Slendier pasta is available in selected health stores and comes in five different formats, all of which are organic: angel hair, fettuccine, rice style, spaghetti and noodles.

Gluten is the protein found in wheat, rye, and barley. A number of diseases have been linked to gluten, but it can be hard to diagnose and many people who are either gluten intolerant or who have coeliac disease go undiagnosed.

If you have any of the following symptoms it could be a sign that you have gluten intolerance:1. Digestive problems including wind, bloating, diarrhoea and perhaps constipation. 2. Feeling tired after eating a meal that contains gluten.3. Neurological signs such as feeling dizzy or being off balance.4. Chicken skin (aka keratosis pilaris) on the back of the arms.

5. Migraines.6. Diagnosis of autoimmune diseases including rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, lupus, psoriasis or scleroderma.7. Hormone imbalances such as pre-menstrual tension or polycystic ovary syndrome.8. Diagnosis of chronic fatigue or fibromyalgia. 9. Joint inflammation, swelling or pain.10. Problems with mood such as anxiety, depression or mood swings.

IngredIents: • 1 medium butternut squash• ¼ cup cashews, soaked for four hours

• ½ cup water• 2 cloves garlic• 1 tbsp lemon juice• ½ tsp smoked paprika• 1 tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)• Pinch of sea salt• 1 pack (250g) Slendier Organic Fettuccine

Method: 1 Preheat the oven to 180C, and line a

baking tray with a little foil. Remove

the head from the squash, then chop in half

lengthways and scoop out the seeds. Place

the squash skin side up on the baking tray,

and transfer to the top shelf of the oven for

approximately 40 minutes. Leave to cool

for at least five minutes, before removing

the skin and dicing. Collect two cups of the

squash, and save the rest for leftovers.

2 Drain and rinse the cashews.

In a high powered blender, blitz

all of the ingredients until smooth.

3 Cook the pasta according to the

instructions on the pack – simply

drain, rinse, then soak in hot water

for a minute before draining again.

4 Transfer the contents of the

pack to two separate bowls,

before covering in the butternut sauce.

Delicious with some steamed kale

thrown in, if you have any to hand.

If you think you may

be gluten intolerant, try an

elimination diet. Take all foods

containing gluten out of your diet

for at least a fortnight, the longer

the better, as gluten can take a

while to clear from your system. If

you feel better off these foods, but

worse when you reintroduce them,

gluten may be a problem for you.

(Serves 2)

Let’s face it – there’s nothing more comforting on a cold winter’s evening than a steaming bowl of pasta covered in a rich, creamy sauce. However, if gluten is off the menu, finding a replacement can be a real challenge. Slendier’s konjac pasta is paired here with a deliciously creamy sauce made with roasted butternut squash – so it’s also dairy free to boot!

be the ChaNge to see the ChaNgeSandy C. Newbigging, author of the bestselling book NEW BEGINNINGS, shares his teachings on making powerful and positive life changes

BusIness | sandy’s TeaChIngs

eVERY second of every day offers a new beginning. Right now, the forces of creation are miraculously and

magnificently coming together to give birth to a brand new moment bursting with potential and possibilities. What you do with it is ultimately your choice, which is the first thing you must know if you want to empower others with the power to choose between peace or pain, confusion or clarity, problems or perfection, procrastination or action, and failure or success.

Building the body and life you want requires the right INNER foundation. When embarking on making improvements it is vital that you embrace the evolutionary inner work that is usually required.

To guide you, I’m going to share three inner teachings for making the rest of your life the best of your life. By focusing on cultivating a more positive and productive inner relationship with life, you create a powerful platform for making genuine and long-lasting changes within your external life circumstances. It just makes sense.

INNNER TEACHING ONE: Outer Reflects InnerOrange trees don’t grow peaches. Obvious statement to make, perhaps, but it serves to shine an enlightening light on one of the foremost natural laws that govern this universe; namely, you reap what you sow.

External life echoes your inner expectations. Inner thoughts, including your beliefs, intentions and expectations, are the inner seeds of your external life

circumstances. This means that your self image, including your personal opinions about who you think you are and what you believe you are capable of, shapes your external health, wealth, relationships, living and working environments, and so on. The seeds that you sow become the life that you grow so if you want new things to enter your life you must plant new seed thoughts in your mind that are aligned with what you want.

INNER TEACHINGS TWO: Highlight Highest HopeFor the universe to be able to deliver what you want, you must know what you want. Getting super clear on what I call your heart’s highest hope can be the difference that makes all the difference. To help, I’m giving you an imaginary magic wand and with it you can have any one wish. What

would you ask for, if you could

have absolutely anything? When asked this

question, most people say they want inner experiences including peace, happiness,

love, and contentment

instead of external objects or events. Highlighting your heart’s highest hope by living each day super clear on what you ultimately want helps you to stop wasting time, focus on what’s useful, make better decisions and massively increase your chances of enjoying it.

INNER TEACHINGS THREE: Be Here NowIn reality, everything in this universe exists now. Now is all there is. Your life is happening now. In fact, your life is nothing more than the present moment you’re in. Now is all you have. If you are lucky enough to wake up tomorrow, open your eyes and be blessed with the gift of life, all you have is one more now!

Plug into the universal point of power by making it a priority to be here now. Without learning how to be in the here and now, no new knowledge or external success will be useful or fulfilling because you will remain one step removed from life. Such an attitude

of active attentiveness to the present moment moves you from possessing knowledge to living with wisdom. This can be the master key to the treasure chest of amazing gifts that already reside within you. Being here now

makes every moment not only matter, but magical, and lets every moment be a new beginning, including this one.

H ERBALISTS know that many flowers and herbs have aphrodisiac, as well as romantic, qualities.

Herbs, so history tells us, have a language of love just as flowers do. Herbs have many romantic meanings, so take an alternative and fragrant tack this Valentine’s Day. Saying it with herbs is a thoughtful and original way to express your feelings on the most loving day of the year.

Basil, the king of herbs Basil means “love” in the herbal tradition, and can be presented to your amour in various ways. Centuries ago, hopeful maidens would put a small pot of basil on the windowsill to indicate that they were ready for a suitor. Men keen to find a girl would place a few leaves of basil in their hair. If a would-be suitor accepted a sprig of basil from a girl, he was accepting her as his wife. It’s a lot cheaper than a diamond solitaire!

If food is the way to your man’s heart, then make him a tempting dish rich in aromatic basil. Many Italian recipes use basil so cook up an Italian feast for your lover.

ThymeThyme is also rampantly romantic. It signifies “affection” and also “bravery” and “energy”. In medieval times, ladies of the court would embroider their knight’s jousting wear with a bee hovering over a sprig of thyme.

Pop a sprig of scented thyme in a Valentine’s

card, or create a fragrant buttonhole, as an original and enticing mark of affection.

BayBay leaves represent “glory of love” in the romantic lexicon. In Tudor times girls would sprinkle two leaves with rosewater and put them under their pillow on St Valentine’s Eve. They would chant: “St Valentine be kind to me – in my dreams let me my true love see.”

If they dreamt of love, it meant they would marry within the year. If marriage followed, the young wives would sometimes secretly tie laurel leaves to the bottom of the bed to ensure that their husband remained faithful.

Bay leaves were also – and can still be – added to the bathwater to create a scented bath for two on St Valentine’s Day night.

CalendulaCalendula (marigold) means “joy” and can be used to convey a message of happiness in a relationship. It is said that if you plant marigolds in the soil on which your loved one often walks, he will be true forever.

YarrowThe herb yarrow signifies “seven years of love” and has always been considered lucky in Chinese culture.

OreganoThis herb also sends a message of adoration – it’s a symbol of “lifelong happiness” and is linked to Aphrodite, the Goddess of Love. Oregano (from the Greek words for “mountain” and “joy”), was made into wreaths to be worn by the bride at ancient Greek weddings.

LavenderAccording to herbal lore, lavender is a sign of devotion and undying love. It can be incorporated into various Valentine’s Day gifts; try it in sweet-smelling sachets, bath oils, soaps and scents. Sprinkled between the sheets, it is said to prevent arguments and discord.

RosemaryRosemary is said to be for “remembrance” and in bygone days was placed in the wedding bouquet and the bridal bed to encourage fidelity. Like bay leaves, sprigs of rosemary were placed under a pillow by girls hoping to dream of their future husband.

Herbs and flowers can be used together to enhance romance, mingled together with a base oil to make bath or massage oils. According to tradition, a combination of jasmine, vanilla and musk scented oils are said to increase desire. For a gentle, more gradual, courtship, use rose, gardenia and lavender. n

Romantics might use flowers and chocolate to spell out their love on St Valentine’s Day. But there are other, age-old, ways to send a message of love, and it’s all to do with herbs
