MAKE A CHILD'S CHRISTMAS EXTRA SPECIAL THIS YEAR

Our school has a wonderful relationship with the Pathways Community Centre who assists us in supporting families within our community.

The Christmas Season is a time for families & friends to come together, celebrate life and show gratitude. This time of year can often be very hard for those around us.

We ask for your generosity of Christmas themed items to spread joy and bring smiles to the children in our community:- Christmas decorations, story books, mince pies, Christmas cakes, puddings, etc. Your donations will brighten up the spirits of our local families. We have large boxes placed in our Front Office and Junior School Office for items to be received. These items will be collected by the Pathways Community Centre and will be added to vital hampers for identified families. Any contribution you can make, no matter how small, will have a huge impact.

Donation boxes will remain until the end of term.

Our sincere thanks,

Noelle Wallis, Pastoral Care Worker & Vicki Cook, Business Manager

CHEMISTRY SPECTACULAR

YEAR 10 UNISA PLANETARIUM EXPERIENCE PRAKASH BABU – 10/3/1999 TO 27/11/2012

On Tuesday 20th of November, students undertaking Stage 1 Chemistry in 2019 were invited to attend ‘Chemistry Spectacular.’ Hosted by

Adelaide University’s School of Physical Sciences, twenty students and two teachers from The Heights School, Ms Amanda Lamming and Mr

Enrico Penna were wowed by a variety of chemical reactions involving small quantities of chemicals. Luminescence,

fire and loud explosions were the big crowd pleasers, with the grand finale resulting in close to 3000 ping pong balls

exploding out of a steel drum via the power of liquid nitrogen. Students who attended, left the auditorium eager to

learn more about Chemistry and the power of chemical reactions. Students and teachers would like to thank the

University of Adelaide and the Royal Australian Chemical Institute for sponsoring a world of Chemistry wonderment.

Ms Amanda Lamming and Mr Enrico Penna

On Friday 23 November students from SS01 and SS06 visited University of South Australia Mawson Lakes Campus to experience the Planetarium and receive a tour of the campus. Students were engaged in an interactive experience, learning about constellations, stars and light years. During the tour students were shown what life as a university student would be like; visiting a large lecture theatre, the engineering department and the research building.

Ms Lamming, Mr Roubanis and Mr Penna

It was great to see everyone gather at the school recently to commemorate the passing of our great friend and fellow 806 classmate Prakash Babu.

Prakash’s family and many friends from the graduating class of 2016 gathered by his memorial, laid flowers and shared special moments together. We were then treated to a special lunch generously prepared by mother Bavani and sister Madhu.

It was great to see everyone once again and we intend to remain in contact and meet annually on the anniversary of Prakash’s passing.

Attached are photos of the memorial sundial at the front of the school and also a photo we all took in our 2012 classroom.

Until next year,

Mr Arthur Roubanis 806 HG Teacher 2012-2016

601 BUSINESS DAY

I would like to congratulate all the 601 class that participated in the Business Day held last

Wednesday, 28th November (Week 7). They put a lot of hard work into planning, organising

and preparing for the day and this was evident in the amazing amount of funds that were

raised. In total, the class raised $332 for Cystic Fibrosis SA, a charity that they chose and feel

very strongly about. From all the students and myself we would like to thank all those who

were involved with buying the goods that were sold on the day.

Mackenzie Gow is an example to us all. She is a young woman who balances the demands of a chronic genetic illness, with the demands of school, plus her involvement as a violinist in the Secondary Schools String Orchestra, and as a member of the City of Tea Tree Gully Youth Advisory Council who developed and facilitated the Youth Leadership Conference early this term.

At school Mackenzie has continued to achieve academic excellence, participated in Rainbow group activities, and has been a member of the team who put together the 2018 school production running the sound and lighting desks. And she has done all of this after spending most of year 8 studying through the Open Access College because she was too unwell to come to school. YEAR 12 VALEDICTION

Seeing our students grow from wide-eyed adolescents, to confident young adults is certainly a privilege. On the 22nd November, The Heights School Year 12 student body united at Sfera’s for the last time to celebrate this very success in front of a proud audience of staff, family, friends and invited guests.

Special guests participating in this year’s valediction included Tony Zappia MP, Frances Bedford MP, Blair Boyer MP, Lucas Jones JP, April McLennan, Jim Rouse, and guest speaker Alexandra Harvey, an old scholar, who entertained the audience with her experiences of life after school, and how to cope with change with honesty and grit.

Probably by far one of the most touching moments for me was the high regard and emotion each Home Group teacher showed introducing the official awards for their students. A touching moment was when Nick Pizimolas presented the award for Caltex All Rounder and was given a thorough standing ovation from staff, parents and students. Thank you to all involved, especially the parents whose support and diligence we could not function without. We wish the Class of 2018 all the very best in their future pathways.

SPORTS NEWS

YEAR 9 HEALTH AND PHYSICAL EDUCATION

YEAR 6 WEST LAKES AQUATICS DAY EXCURSION

NATIONAL CHEER & DANCE COMPETITION

VISTA YEAR 8/9 BOYS INDOOR CRICKET

Some of our Year 9 HPE classes have been completing a football codes unit this term. We were fortunate enough to have players from the UniSA Eagles Gridiron Club jump on board to support and develop our students Flag Football skills. Students participated in a 1.5hour session which focused on the skill development of throwing, catching, defensive stance, routes and of course game play. It was a great way for students to finish the unit and we are grateful for the support of Sam, John and Mr Holt from the UniSA Eagles Gridiron Club.

Nick Schild & Eulaly Allen, Health and Physical Education Teachers

On Monday 3rd December and Tuesday 4th December, the three Year 6 classes enjoyed an aquatics day at West Lakes Aquatics centre. Students experienced sailing, kayaking, canoeing and body boarding. As part of the day students learnt about water safety at the beach and in rivers. They learnt what a rip tide was and what to do if caught in one. A few students were lucky enough to spot a starfish.

Congratulations to Ava for winning 3rd place in the Cheer and Dance

Competition that included six states, one territory, and three countries for her

age division. I have heard from her Mum that she had a fabulous time and enjoyed

the competition thoroughly by competing against the other competitors.

Ms Ravi, Year 4/5 class

On Friday the 23rd of November, the Year 8/9 Boys Indoor Cricket Team participated in a NE VISTA Carnival at Brahma Lodge ICA. The Heights School started off the day with plenty of enthusiasm by having a strong win over Modbury High. As the day continued we encountered some tough competition and we had heavy losses against the eventual winners and runners up. However, the last game of the day was a lot closer. It came down to the last couple of overs where unfortunately we couldn’t capitalise and finish the game of going down to The Avenues by 32 runs. In their words… ‘I enjoyed the day as we showed great communication and most of the time played to our strengths. The day was fun as we got to hang out with mates and play cricket, what a better way to spend a day. It was enjoyable as we showed great sportsmanship and never gave up.’
