September begins our busiest time of the year. We have several fund raisers beginning, such as the Jim Click Car Raffle, the PWID Drive, and events such as our All Knighter, Meet and Greet. The Memorial Mass and Christmas party following right behind. The success of this council is not based on the officers, but lies solely on the shoulders of our members. We have over 180 members in this council and if only half of these gentlemen would step forward and give an hour here and 15 minutes there, we would be able to exceed all of our obligations easily. Please search inside yourself and give what time you have so that we can support our Parish and our Community as we pledged to do when we took our First Degree.

Father John has also asked the Knights to build a Sanctity of Life Garden (to the left of the stairs at the entrance to the covered walkway) near the Chapel. This will require a fairly substantial commitment for a few weeks when the weather cools down. We are forming the project committee now, and are looking for volunteers willing to donate some time on a few Saturday mornings to get this done. This is an opportunity for us to leave a timeless mark on our Parish that will provide a solemn place to remember past parishioners and properly reflect on what they gave to this church.

It is indeed an honor for me to hold this office and follow the Grand Knights before me who gave so much. I ask for your support and promise you that I will not let you down and disappoint you in any way. I take this position very seriously and my only goal is to continue to make this council the best in the District and in the State.

~ UPCOMING EVENTS ~ Pancake Breakfast ~ Our monthly pancake breakfasts will continue in September (starting Sept 10th). We welcome any Knights who wish to volunteer to help serve after the 07:30 and 9:00 AM masses on Pancake Breakfast Sundays. Please contact Lloyd LaComb [email protected] to volunteer. Breakfast is only served after the 7:30 & 9 AM Masses. Jim Click Car Raffle ~ Our key fundraiser for this Fall will again be the Jim Click Car Raffle (Millions for Tucson). Our Financial Secretary, Larry Lewis, has coordinated with the Jim Click Raffle folks to have this year’s car, a Ford Platinum Explorer, here on September 10th to officially kick off the campaign. All raffle tickets purchased go completely to the Knights of Columbus designated charities, because Jim Click is donating this car to the winner. Since our “selling” dates are in conjunction with our Fall pancake breakfast schedule, we will need as many Brother Knights as possible to volunteer their time to help sell raffle tickets after the Sunday Masses. Please contact Larry Lewis [email protected] or Steve Sanchez [email protected] to volunteer your help.

Blood Drive Blood Drive ~ Our next scheduled Blood Drive is September 17th in the St. Thomas Parish Hall from 7:30 AM until noon. Please donate, if you can. We can always use Knights to help with registration and serving juice and snacks at the post-donation canteen.

All-Knighter ~ Our council’s annual “all-guy” fun social, the “All Knighter”, will be on Friday September 22nd from 6-9 PM. Our guest speaker is Col Ron Sable, who served in the Reagan administration. This key event is an opportunity to open the door for membership to eligible Catholic men by reaching out to the parish community. Council members are encouraged to bring a potential catholic candidate with them, including family, friend or parishioner you have met at church. The Knights of Columbus is a fraternity, a brotherhood, and it requires effort to strengthen those bonds. The annual "All Knighter” is one of those activities that offers members this opportunity. Please join your council brothers, bring a friend and share in fraternity while enjoying Brats, Burgers and Beer. Please RSVP to GK Bill Neer (520-307-1606) [email protected] with numbers for this event.

PWID Drive ~ Our PWID (People with Intellectual Disabilities) Drive starts this month on September 23rd/24th in the St. Thomas courtyard after all the Masses. Contact Brother Knight Dan Chambers (520- 909-6821) [email protected] and take a brief 15-minute shift passing out Tootsie Rolls after attending Mass. Our primary benefactor is still the Special Olympics of Southern Arizona, sponsored by the Sunnyside Vikings Booster Club.

Meet & Greet ~ Fr. John has announced that Sunday September 24th will be the Meet & Greet day for St. Thomas groups to make their pitch to fellow parishioners to join their parish activities. Please join PGK Patrick McMahon, membership chairman, (520-990-6418) [email protected], if you can spare some time in the parish hall to promote membership in our council.

Oktoberfest ~ On October 21st our council will hold our 2nd parish-wide Oktoberfest fundraiser. This will include music, German food, and beer. The Bouncing Czechs will again provide the entertainment Contact PGK David Orr (520-548-8472) [email protected] to help with this event.

~ MAKE DISCIPLES ~ Deacon Ed Sheffer

I’m pretty sure that most of us are at least partially aware of Mahatma Gandhi, but I’ll bet most of us never knew this about him. During his younger days, when he was a lawyer in South Africa, he read the Gospels at length and saw in the teachings of Jesus the answer to the major problem facing the people of India, the caste system. He seriously considered embracing the Christian faith. He went to a white-only church one Sunday morning to talk to the pastor about the idea of becoming Christian. When he entered the church, however, the usher refused to give him a seat and told him to go worship with his own kind. Gandhi left the church and never returned. He wrote years later in his memoirs: If Christians have caste differences also, I might as well remain a Hindu. You and I have heard it said that we have a vocation’s crisis, a family crisis, a marriage crisis, a faith crisis. These crises are but symptoms of a much greater predicament. We have an identity crisis. We have forgotten our missionary calling: Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you (Matt 28:19-20). Jesus gave us 4 tasks: go – make – baptize – teach. At the very heart of the Great Commission is make disciples. Jesus told us over 2,000 years ago to not just make believers or practicing Catholics, but to make disciples. We were and are always a people meant to be on a mission. That mission is to bring good news wherever it has yet not been encountered. To be a disciple of Jesus Christ is to be engaged in a lifelong process of learning from and about Jesus. This learning process is not haphazard, but intentional and disciplined. You and I know that just because someone believes in Jesus or goes to church does not necessarily mean they have a hunger for Jesus. Loving evangelization leads to hunger. To evangelize literally means to announce the good news, but what is the Good News? The Good News is not only to hear the wonderful truths of God’s plan for salvation, or to hear about God’s love and mercy. The Good News has a name and a face. The very person and presence of Jesus in our life is the Good News. The ultimate game-changer is in coming to know him and to love him. The difficult truth is many people have never come to know him personally, and therefore have no hunger for him. Less than 25% of all self-identified Catholics attend Mass on a weekly basis. Millions upon millions of Catholics are utterly convinced that they are missing nothing. I recently overheard a fellow Catholic discuss how they belonged to the one true church. The church Jesus founded. Just for the record, being part of the Catholic Church is not meant to provide home-court advantage. Being part of the Roman Catholic Church is meant to be a joyfully shared treasure. The truth is the Catholic Church by definition exists for the sake of those who do not belong. It’s not a club for the sake of its members. The Catholic Church is where we are meant to be led and united in our hunger for Jesus. Maybe we Knights could reflect how well we are sharing our love for Jesus with others who aren’t present among us. Are we inviting others to come and experience Jesus, or to join an organization? How much are we going out of our way to be hospitable to others on Sunday and beyond. Trust is gained through relationships, through caring, through making someone feel like they belong. The intentional disciple is always driven by a desire to see other people hear and respond to Jesus. The intentional disciple has a hunger for Jesus himself. They have a passion for people to experience the love of God in Jesus Christ. Intentional disciples always remember they are in the disciple making business.

~ FIELD AGENT ~ Ask Eligible Men to Join

Today, I want to address the growth of the Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps this great fraternal engine running. All our charitable works at the council, state, national and international level are accomplished by our hard-working members. More members equal more charity.

We know that the membership blitz is a tried and true way for councils to get more men to join. We see these pushes often in March, in celebration of Founder’s Day, and again in October. These drives are successful because brother Knights have increased visibility speaking or presenting during and after Masses and at special events. We must remember that we have a duty to ask each and every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the good of the Church, the community and the Order.

During the rest of the year, we often “forget” to ask men to join and to bring their families into the Knights of Columbus family. You probably know an eligible Catholic man you could ask today. What if the only reason he hasn’t joined is because no one has asked him yet?

When telling a prospect about the strengths of the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal benefit: our insurance program. This is often a “selling point” to a potential member who is on the fence. Many members become Knights simply to be able to buy coverage to protect their family. Soon after, they realize the good our charitable works do for their community, and they are proud to be members.

As your professional Knights of Columbus insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow in fraternity in any way that I can.

“That our brothers and sisters who have strayed from the faith, through

our prayer and witness to the Gospel, may rediscover the merciful

closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian life.” Pope

Francis’ General Prayer Intention for July

I’m sure we all know lapsed Catholics. Some are even from our own

families, and these cause us special anguish. We must have asked, “What

are we to do?” Let’s look again at the Pope’s Intention.

“That…through our prayer and witness to the Gospel, [they] may

rediscover…” There is nothing so persuasive as example, allied to

heartfelt prayer. St. Monica applied these to bring her son, St.

Augustine, back to his practice of the faith.

The challenge, of course, is in the next phrase: “…[they] may rediscover

the merciful closeness of the Lord and the beauty of the Christian

life.” It is those two qualities that the lapsed must see first in us. I

thank God that these are shown clearly by Knights and others whom I

know, both living and recently deceased.

May your own life be ever prayerful and a witness to the Gospel,

Chris Corbally, S.J.
