Sports Museum Visit by former Parramatta player A very welcome visitor to Allora last week was Mr. Kerry McLean, a man who helped numerous Allora and district organisations secure funding from the Government Gaming Grants. In the last round of funding, a grant of $5000 was given to the Allora Regional Sports Museum to provide air conditioning for the main and Hall of Fame room No. 1. The units were installed by Wade Platz (son of Hall of Famer, Greg) from P&T Air Toowoomba. Wade also made a sizable donation towards costs to fully service the entire building. Mr McLean is an ex Parramatta Eels player of the late 1960’s and his father was a Kangaroo of 1938. He was very impressed with the high quality of the Museum and congratulated the committee on such a valuable asset to the town. He will now apply for the next round to secure funding to complete the invaluable Laws collection and further expand the Sight & Sound displays. Tyre Disposal Fees & Charges Now More Simple and AffordableSouthern Downs Regional Council is pleased to offer a simplified and more affordable policy regarding the disposal of tyres at its major waste facilities.Council has reviewed the fees and charges that apply for the disposal of tyres at its major waste facilities and has as a result of this review, consolidated the number of vehicle categories (such as passenger car, heavy truck, or grader) from 25 to 10 and has reduced the disposal fees, some by 50%.This initiative aims to:• Simplify how residents are charged for the disposal of waste

tyres• Make it more affordable for residents to dispose of their waste

tyres• Reduce the amount of illegal dumping of tyresFor example, residents will now be charged $5.00 for the disposal of passenger car and motorcycle tyres, instead of the $10.00 that was previously charged. Please consult Council’s website for the new fees and charges relating to tyre disposal: www.sdrc.qld.gov.au/ArticleDocuments/401/SDRC Fees and Charges 2017- 18.pdf.aspx?Embed=YResidents are reminded that tyres will only be accepted at Warwick, Stanthorpe, Killarney, Allora and Wallangarra Waste Facilities.

Bridge OpenedThe William Deacon Bridge, dedicated to the first Head Teacher at the Allora State School 125 years ago, and grandfather of the present Allora Shire Chairman, Cr. Jim Deacon, was opened yesterday. The new bridge, built at a cost of $250,000, was officially opened by the Deputy President of the Federal Senate, Senator Mal Colston. Funding for the bridge was provided by a financial assistance grant to local authorities and from the Queensland Department of Transport local authorities road subsidy. The opening was attended by Department of Transport officials and district engineer, Member for Warwick Mr. Des Booth, Shire Councillors, students from the Allora State and St. Patrick’s Schools and members of the public.Allora’s Past 50 years ago July 1967

Fatality at Show Grounds

About noon yesterday Mr. J. C. Marshall, secretary of the Allora Show Society, met with an accident which resulted in his death about three hours later. Mr. Marshall was preparing to return to his home at

Deuchar, but first he drove his sulky to the show grounds in order to take some water in a cream can he had with him. How the fatal accident occurred is a mystery. Mr. Marshall always drove a fast horse and it is possible that he was caught between the body of the sulky and the wheel, or was dashed against a near-by tree. Mr. Marshall was conveyed to Dr. Pain’s private hospital where he died without recovering consciousness. He leaves a widow and three young children.Allora’s Past 150 years ago July 1867

Next Super T delivery is heading westWellcamp Airport passengers and other users of Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road now need to factor in more travelling time to destinations today, while Nexus installs 16 Super T girders on the Toowoomba Second Range Crossing (TSRC) bridge over Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road at Wellcamp.Nexus Chief Executive Officer John Hagan said: “The Toowoomba-Cecil Plains Road girder deliveries are the first deliveries that will be installed over a major road.“Deliveries arrive in the early hours of the morning, as soon as the sun rises, a very large crane will be used to lift the girders in to place.“While the girders are in the air, traffic controllers will hold traffic for between five and fifteen minutes in both directions. The safety of motorists and workers will be our number one priority during this process. The amount of time that traffic is held depends on how quickly the girders can be secured.“People travelling to the Wellcamp Airport should allow extra travel time to ensure they get to their flights on time.”“The precast beams are manufactured off site to minimise disruption to nearby residents and transported via pre-approved haulage routes. Deliveries travel overnight from Brisbane and require intermittent closures of the westbound up lanes of the Warrego Highway, Toowoomba Range.”Toowoomba Range closures occur between midnight and 4am and will last for approximately an hour at a time. For further information about scheduled delivery dates please visit www.QLDtraffic.qld.gov.au or www.nexusTSRC.com.au.

BAD JOKE OF THE WEEKOn the glass door of the little country store, a stranger noticed a sign saying “DANGER! BEWARE OF THE DOG!”. Inside he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor

next to the cash register.

He asked the storekeeper, “Is THAT the dog we are supposed to beware of?”

“Yep, that’s him,” he replied.

The stranger couldn’t help but laugh. “It certainly doesn’t look like a dangerous dog to me. Why in the world do you need that sign?”

“Because,” the storekeeper replied, “before I posted that sign, people kept tripping over

him.”

Have Your Say on the Future of TourismSouthern Downs Regional Council’s Economic Development and Tourism Unit invites everyone involved in tourism and related businesses to attend the inaugural Southern Downs and Granite Belt Tourism Forum.Held on Tuesday 18 July from 11am – 3:00pm at the Stanthorpe Civic Centre, the aim of this free forum is to encourage tourism operators to work collaboratively with Council to achieve a shared and positive vision for the future of tourism on the Southern Downs and Granite Belt. The forum will cover themes for future marketing campaigns, strategies to improve the visitor experience and the business assistance the industry needs from Council’s Economic Development Unit. The Southern Downs and Granite Belt Visitor Guide and new website have now been developed, and Council is ready to launch targeted marketing campaigns with the objective to:• Inspire consumers to want to visit Southern Downs• Move consumers from awareness to consideration of planning

a Southern Downs visit• Complement TEQ and SQCT cooperative marketing programs• Increase the number of visitors into our regional area• Generate increase in visitor spend and yield ensuring growth

in tourism and related businesses and retention of jobs in the sector

Southern Downs Regional Council Mayor Tracy Dobie said Council realises the importance of developing the capacities of local owners and operators involved in tourism and promoting strong positive relations and networking amongst the sector.“Council will investigate ideas and concepts arising from the Forum and will assist businesses to develop and expand through tailored education and increase tourism potential by identifying training wants and needs,” Cr Dobie said.“Tourism providers are truly passionate about their industry and this Forum aims to ensure a collaborative approach at a grassroots level is undertaken for the future direction of tourism in the region.”The Forum will be facilitated by Mark Olsen, EarthCheck General Manager, Consulting; with guest speaker John Sharpe who owns Brisbane’s Riverlife, Tangatours, P&O Edge, Northshore Harbour Café, Walkabout Creek Adventures and Skyblackbox Digital. To RSVP for the Forum phone Jenny Sherrin on 07 4681 5527 or email [email protected]

Grocery shoppers can save at least $2,080 per year by understanding specials and changing habitsGrocery shoppers are throwing away over $2,000 per year unnecessarily on their grocery shopping bills, due to not understanding how to take advantage of special offers, according to the mySavvy Shopper’s consumer spendingalgorithm. Visit mySavvyShopper.com.au for grocery specials comparisons. mySavvy Shopper’s top ten tips to save over $2,000 from your annual grocery bill:1. Before you shop, check the supermarket catalogues for special offers from

the big stores coming up that week (some start on a Wednesday), then base meal plans and shopping lists around what’s on offer for best value.

2. Once you know where the specials are, develop a list by supermarket chain, and shop at more than one to maximise on discounts. Some consumers ‘split shop’ because they know that if a regular special isn’t available in one major supermarket chain, it is likely to be available in the other or if not, then it’s likely to appear in one of them the following week.

3. Is it really a good deal? Just because the label and catalogue states that a product is a special offer, look at the original price and size, to determine if it’s actually good value. Sometimes a larger size that is not on special offer is in fact cheaper.

4. Use the cost per 100g to work out what’s actually good value, and don’t be swayed by the size of the packaging itself, as this doesn’t indicate true product size.

5. Don’t visit a supermarket any more often than you have to. A recent survey by mySavvyShopper shows that on average, people come out with five more items they didn’t intend to buy.

6. Don’t be tempted to buy larger sizes of confectionery or other items deemed treats, just because they are on special. It’s highly likely that you’ll consume them just as quickly as smaller packs, and still have them on the shopping list next time.

7. Know where supermarkets keep the specials. The ends of aisles also hold special offers in temporary displays so you won’t miss them. There are also on-shelf specials that the manager may decide to put on shelf for that store only and end-of-line products.

8. Many big brands are often on special, so if these brands are on your shopping list you never need to buy them at full price again. The trick is to know that if they are not on special in your regular store one week, they will most likely be in a competitor’s store on special or back on special in yours the week after.

9. Just because a product is on ‘special’ does not mean it’s a good deal. Deals that ask you to buy more to get a price off can be hard to understand - is the third pack really “free”, or is the deal next to it better?

10. Be flexible with your brand choices, so try similar brands on special offer, rather than paying full price for the brand you automatically reach for.

Allora Golf NotesLast Sunday a small field of players played a club sponsored two person ambrose event. Teams were drawn

and with fine weather out on the course along with a bit of banter the winning team was Rougan Geraghty and Lindsay May with 60.5 pts from the team of Kev Harrison and Rod Simpson on 61 pts. Kev nailed the pin prizes, Rougan took out the approach and our ‘struggling’ B Grader Rod Simpson showed us all how to smash the ball out of sight winning the long drive for the 18th. Congratulations to the winners and all players. While this was happening we had a small group head out to Dalby for the DDGA Championships. On a beautiful track with a field in a field of over 100 players from surrounding clubs, Club Captain Aaron Simpson won B Grade and Tom Brown winning the C Grade followed with Steven Hughes winning the C Grade nett, congratulations boys well done. A lot of new friendships were made with a few promising a trip to our course for our Open day.Allora sports club also wish to thank Barry & Ann Glass of Allora Engineering & Welding along with Allora Tyre Service for their extended sponsorship of our 4th and 14th holes, thank you.For people wishing to come out for a game we have been delivered 6 new golf buggies for hire. These can be obtained by contacting our Club secretary John Ellwood on 0448 196 647.Thank you to our sponsores, to our winners and players who played at Dalby in the DDGA Championships well done. This Friday teeing from 2pm is the Percy’s Fruit sponsored Duck Run all welcome, then Sunday teeing at 11.30am will be the Allora Pharmacy Monthly Medal, all welcome to attend but dont forget your sandbuckets and great golfing to you all.

New Golf Carts for AlloraThe Allora Sports Club has just taken delivery of six Yamaha golf carts for use on the course. In recent years, the number of social golfers playing at Allora has increased dramatically, with many travelling from Warwick, Toowoomba and even further afield. Many golfers prefer to play golf in a cart and the Sports Club committee is confident that we will now attract more social golfing clubs and corporate golf days to play the challenging Allora course. If you would like to discuss hiring a golf cart please call Wendy on 0437 342 870.In other exciting golf news, the Club Secretary is delighted to confirm that local businesses Allora Engineering & Welding and Allora Tyre Service have extended their sponsorship of the 4th and 14th holes respectively. Well known locals Barry & Anne Glass are proprietors of these businesses and this sponsorship demonstrates their continued commitment to the Allora

community. Actually the fourth hole on the Allora course reflects Barry’s football persona. It is tough and uncompromising and will give you a whack behind the ear if you get out of line. The 14th is also like Anne. It is sweet and charming but should not be underestimated as it will not take any nonsense. If anyone is interested in sponsoring a golf hole they can contact John on 0448 196 647.

of the game to get the Roosters to an impressive start 12-0 but the game did settle down and Shannon Hicks grabbed a four pointer after 21 minutes to get the Hawks back in the game 12-6.Dylan Chown and Aaron Sillitoe stretched Valleys lead to 20-6 with impressive tries and they went to the break in control of the match. After the break, Steven Rodgers scored for Valleys with a bulldozing run to get the Roosters to 26-6. The Hawks mounted a mini comeback when experienced players Dennis Burgoyne and Dom Haak crossed for soft tries to get the Hawks within eight points. Player of the match Hnaloan Budden scored his double to put the game beyond doubt and Gatton’s Lachlan Gorman scored a consolation try just before the full time hooter sounded. The Roosters were very impressive but Gatton did show they are still a chance in this competition with some enterprising football. The Hawks entered the game without stars, Callum Woolacott and Billy Jackwitz but played effectively. The Roosters speed and game plan won them the day. Coach Brett Seymour and Liam Capewell combined well to lead their side around the park with Turnbull, Sillitoe and Chown taking full advantage. Throw in Hnaloan Budden and you have a very nice win. Valleys have a well-deserved break next round, whilst Gatton host Highfields. A GRADE: Valleys 38 (Hnaloan Budden 2,Aaron Sillitoe 2,

Travis Turnbull , Dylan Chown, Steven Rodgers tries Travis Turnbull 3, Brett Seymour 2 goals) defeated Gatton 22 (Shannon Hicks, Dennis Burgoyne, Lachlan Gorman, Dom Haak tries Shannon Hicks 3 goals) RESERVE GRADE: Gatton 20 drew with Valleys 20UNDER 18: Valleys 46 defeated Gatton 6SECOND DIVISION: Gatton 22 defeated Valleys 6Oakey Bears V Wattles Warriors - Wattles warriors scored a 44-10 win over Oakey Bears on Saturday night in Oakey. The Warriors skipped to a 30-0 lead at half time. Oakey put up a better showing in the second half but the damage was already done. Josh Henry was one of Wattles best whilst Josh Robinson and Aaron Cherry tried hard for the bears. A GRADE: Wattles 44 (Braydon Wilson, Ty Gardner ,Ryan Duggan, Brodie Frizzell, Jackson Green, Josh Henry, Joe Morris, Michael Pearson tries Josh Henry 6 goals) defeated V Oakey 10 (Aaron Cherry, Josh Robinson tries Ezzard Beard Goal)RESERVE GRADE : Wattles 76 defeated Oakey12 UNDER 18: Oakey 36 defeated Wattles 10Pittsworth V Brothers - Pittsworth Danes returned to the winners circle this week with a resounding win over Brothers at Pittsworth on Saturday night. Danes five eighth Thomas O’Sullivan was Pittsworth’s best and was ably assisted by James Dempsey. The Danes scored ten tries to Brothers two and dominated for long periods of time throughout the match. They led 32-0 at halftime and when on with it in the second half. Brothers toiled hard but were unable to continue their recent competitive form. A GRADE Pittsworth 54 (Thomas O’Sullivan 2, Braydon Gibbs, Alex Kahler, Kabu Kofe, Jacob Little, Jordan O’Shea, Tim Phipps, Alex Sinclair, Daniel York tries Alex Sinclair 7 goals) defeated Brothers 8 (Koby Cubby, Alex McErlean tries) RESERVE GRADE: Brothers 40 defeated Pittsworth 22 UNDER 18: Pittsworth 32 defeated Brothers 28SECOND DIVISION: Pittsworth 40 defeated Brothers 16Dalby Diehards V Warwick Cowboys - The Dalby Diehards firmly put their premiership campaign with a solid 24 points to nil win over an undermanned but very brave Warwick Cowboys. The PNG contingent were responsible for all of Dalby’s points with winger Shaun Wickham crossing for a hat trick. His brother Eli and Alex Ambia and Steve Franciscus also crossed for four pointers. Most pleasing for the Dalby team would be keeping their line intact. Not so pleasing is their goal-kicking effort with a none from five over four different kickers and the Diehards will be sweating on the retrun from Europe of Zac Morris.A GRADE: Dalby 24 (Shaun Wickham 3 Eli Wickham, Steve Franciscus, Alex Ambia tries) defeated Warwick 0 RESERVE GRADE: Dalby 32 V Warwick 16UNDER 18: Dalby 22 v Warwick 20 SECOND DIVISION: Dalby 40 Warwick 22Souths Tigers V Goondiwindi Boars - The Southern Suburbs Tigers have kept their season alive and will continue to walk the tightrope after a comprehensive win over Goondiwindi at Clive

Berghofer Stadium. Souths took some time to shake off a determined Goondiwindi effort before they ran away with the game in the second half. Tom Landers was again effective for the Tigers and ran in two tries. Jack Henningsen also chipped in with a double. Souths have leapfrogged Warwick into seventh spot and next week they take on cross town rivals, Brothers and win against the Brethren could see them move into a top six position.A GRADE: Souths 46 (Tom Landers 2, Luke Nolan, Sam Cocker, Jack Henningsen 2, Dwayne Duncan, Josh Ryan tries Luke Nolan 1, Dwayne Duncan 5 goals) defeated Goondiwindi 22 (Will Carter 2, Brandon Sharpley 2 tries Jarrod Dwyer 2, John Goodfellow goals)RESERVE GRADE: Souths 48 V Goondiwindi 0UNDER 18: Souths 48 V Goondiwindi 10LADDER - A Grade: Dalby 22, Valleys 22, Pittsworth 18, Highfields 18, Wattles 14, Gatton 14, Souths 12, Warwick 12, Brothers 4, Oakey 2, Goondiwindi 2.
