MANAGING DEVICES AND PERIPHERALS
Chapter 4
Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 2
CHAPTER OVERVIEW
Implement, manage, and troubleshoot input and output (I/O) devices
Manage and troubleshoot drivers and driver signing
Configure and monitor multiprocessor computers
Configure Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI)
Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 3
AUTOMATIC HARDWARE INSTALLATION

Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 5
MANUAL HARDWARE INSTALLATION
Legacy or non–Plug and Play hardware Requires you to manually configure the
communications settings. You can do this by using the Add Hardware Wizard or by running the installation disk provided
Manually configure the I/O (Input/Output)port, IRQ (Interrupt), and DMA (Direct Memory Access)
Use manufacturer’s installation disk

MANUALLY CONFIGURING RESOURCES
You can configure resources manually on certain devices to manage their settings. Be sure to emphasize that the settings you choose must match any BIOS, firmware, or jumper settings on the actual device to work
properly.

MANAGING AND TROUBLESHOOTING DEVICES
Windows XP usually manages devices automatically.
Update driver/rollback driver.
Verify resource settings on manually configured devices.
Hardware troubleshooters.

UPDATING DEVICE DRIVERS
Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 14
DEVICE DRIVER ROLLBACK
Windows XP retains one previous version of each updated driver.
Roll Back Driver restores the previously installed driver version.
Roll Back Driver cannot restore drivers earlier than the previous version.
Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 15
MANAGING DEVICE DRIVER SIGNING
Device drivers approved by WHQL are digitally signed.
Windows XP can be configured to not install unsigned drivers.
Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 16
CONFIGURING MULTIPROCESSOR SUPPORT
Windows XP configures multiprocessor support automatically.
Do not attempt to manually configure the Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL).
Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 17
MANAGING ACPI SUPPORT
Configured during installation.
Press F5 to choose an alternative HAL; press F7 to force a non-ACPI HAL.
Do not change the HAL after installation.
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface - is a power management specification that allows the operating system to control the amount of power distributed to the computer's devices.

Has anyone had a problem installing hardware? How did you solve it?
Chapter 4: Managing Devices and Peripherals 20
SUMMARY
Windows XP can manage hardware automatically using ACPI and Plug and Play.
Hardware profiles allow multiple hardware configurations.
Windows XP can be configured to prevent installation of unsigned drivers.
Multiple CPU support is automatic in Windows XP.
HALs must be chosen during installation.
