It’s already November! October kept us busy at Meadowvale Village. We celebrated our teachers, DECEs, TAs as well as bus drivers with appreciation days. Staff, students and families walked to school together on International Walk to School Day, Dr. B came to work with our grade 1 and 2 students. A grade 2/3 soccer tournament was hosted here at our school with 8 schools in total participating. We introduced Respect as our first character trait at our Hero Assembly where we met Constable LaChapelle. In the second half of the month we saw our grade 3/4/5 students participate in a cross country meet at Oscar Peterson P.S. The water cycle was on display for all to learn about in our Library. The grade 2s went to the Peel Safety Village and we had several grade 5 leaders at the Raise the Bar Intramural Leadership Conference as well. The month ended with our Parade of costumes and fall colours. It has been a busy month with no signs of slowing down. There are so many great opportunities for students to learn and grow here and we are so happy to be learning and growing with your children each and every day. Our first School Council meeting saw over 41 family members present and we hope to see as many community members come out as possible. We are all looking forward to a fantastic month of November. Susan Bartlett - Principal On October 14 Constable LaChapelle ‘Officer Bear’ came to visit us at our first Hero Assembly. He mentioned many ways that we can all show each other respect. Students were challenged to be as respectful as possible in order to be chosen as one of the most respectful students at Meadowvale Village. On November 25th Officer Bear will be back to reward the students chosen. After these presentations our Kindergarten classes will be teaching us about the trait of Caring along with our Pulblic Health Nurse, Sharn Khinda. We look forward to what they have in store for us. 890 Old Derry Road West, Mississauga, ON, L5W 1A1. Phone: 905-564-5735. Fax: 905-564-2875 Principal: Mrs. S. Bartlett Vice-Principal: Mr. I. Winter bus safety tips Allow extra time to get to your bus stop.

Wear bright clothing so the bus can see you in the early morning and late evening.

Stand away from where the bus stops. Buses need extra room to stop when there is snow and ice.

Use the handrail when boarding or exiting the bus to prevent slipping on wet or icy steps or road surfaces.

Dress properly—winter clothing, hats, and boots will keep you warm.

Don't throw snowballs at the bus or other children waiting for the bus.

Don't slide on the snow or ice patches in driveways or on the street.

Don't push or shove around the bus. Someone could fall down on the ice and get hurt.

On very rare occasions, buses are late because of weather conditions or mechanical problems. Talk to your child about what to do if the bus is late. Here are some suggestions:

When possible, wait with your child for the bus.

Make sure your child knows a phone number where he can reach you or another trusted adult.

Teach your child how and where to get help. Talk to your child about what a "safe" stranger is.

Parent resources help you support your child’s learning

At the Peel board, our mission is to inspire success, confidence and hope in each child. There is no doubt that families play a vital role in helping us achieve this goal. As our partner in education, we hope you'll stay

connected to your child's learning throughout his or her entire school experience.

Visit www.peelschools.org/parents/helpyourchild to explore all resources available to parents. There you will find easy-to-navigate buttons that connect families to tip sheets and web pages on a number of different topics, including math, homework, special education, EQAO and mental health.

O Canada Idol

Once again at Meadowvale Village we have “O Canada Idol”. Students in all grades, 1 to 5, sang our national anthem in music class, and a select group of students were invited to sing a solo audition. Almost forty boys and girls from all grades were selected to each have a turn throughout the school year to sing O Canada, a capella (unaccompanied), during the morning announcements each Thursday for the school. Congratulations to our participants and thank you to all the students who tried out.

We asked some of our grade 3 students about their orienteering trip…..

was hopping around. - Ethan (Ms.

Taylor’s’ class)

We went to Finlayson Field Centre! We met Bonnie, she taught us

Meadowvale Village P.S. will be honouring Canada's soldiers with our Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday November 11 at 10:50 a.m. in the gym for students in Grades 1 to 5. Our two choirs, drama group, Mrs. Leith's Grade 3's and Mrs. Chapman's Grade 5's will be presenting. Parents are invited to join us to mark this time of "remembrance for the men and women who have served, and continue to serve our country during times of war, conflict and peace." Students are encouraged to bring a coin donation to purchase a poppy to wear to this assembly. Students in the Scouting or Guiding movement are invited to wear their uniform. Kindergarten students will be invited to the gym earlier in the day to watch a shortened program to introduce them to Remembrance Day.

On Monday November 28, we are very excited to be hosting the Ensemble Studio School Tour. Our Grade 3, 4 and 5 stu-dents will be seeing a new, modern opera for young people called, Second Nature. Set in a fictional future when humans have retreated from nature because of the deteriorating en-vironment, Second Nature tells the story of two inquisitive and courageous teens who decide to leave the safety of their artificial habitat and work to heal the planet. One of

the ensemble, Charles Sy, is a former Peel student, now pursuing a career in opera. Because of this Peel con-nection, local media (print, digital or television) may be invited to attend the performance. We know our students will be inspired by this dynamic group of young artists.

Melodies Grade 2-3 Choir

The Melodies Choir is ready for the Remembrance Day Ceremony on Friday, November 11. Stu-dents should wear black (dark) pants or skirt and dress shoes that day, and they will be borrowing a school choir shirt to wear over a light t-shirt. Parents are invited to join us to mark this solemn memorial. Choir members are encouraged to purchase a poppy to wear on their choir shirt. We are actively preparing for the December Concert on Thursday December 15. The choir, led by Mrs. Cogan and Mrs. Mehta and accompanied by Mrs. Pang practices each Day 4 and 9 at lunch. We appreciate your support of your child’s commitment to this rewarding activity and remind you that each practice is very important and should not be missed. We expect every choir mem-ber to perform on the evening of Dec.12.

#ChooseAction on Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week

The Peel District School Board will recognize Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week during the week of Nov. 20 to 26, 2016.

This year, we ask our Peel community to ‘#ChooseAction to Be the Difference’ in their classes, offices, schools, communities or world, in order to make these spaces better places for everyone. The Peel Board would like to hear about the big and small actions, the pledges, the promises and the attitudes that our Peel community value, and ask that you take a moment to share your #ChooseAction moments on social media.

Across the Peel board, schools use many programs and initiatives to prevent bullying and to intervene when bullying happens. Though the programs vary, their messages are consistent. Students are taught to:

define bullying

identify forms of bullying

identify the shifting roles in bullying relationships, for example the person who bullies, the target, the bystander or the trusted advocate

determine how to safely “choose action” to prevent and intervene in bullying & harassment

understand that bullying is a relationship problem with relationship solutions

determine positive ways to interact with others in an accepting, inclusive way

demonstrate character attributes and be a leader to help maintain positive and safe school communities

Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week is one of the key items contained in Bill 13: The Accepting Schools Act, that came into effect on Sept. 1, 2012. For more information, visit: www.peelschools.org/aboutus/safeschools/bullying/ or www.edu.gov.on.ca/eng/safeschools/prevention.html.

Traffic safety in our community Safety is a top priority at our school. Here is a list of traffic tips to keep students, staff and parents safe while commuting to and from school. Respect traffic signs and road markers around the school.

Drive slowly and with caution on and near school property. Always yield to pedestri-an traffic. Wait for students, staff members and parents to cross before driving past them.

When dropping your child off at the school, use the Kiss'n'Ride area. This is a supervised area that is designed to keep students safe.

Do not double park or do anything else to block traffic or draw your child off the curb and into traffic. Do not take shortcuts over curbs.

Have your child ready to exit the car when you reach the curb. Say goodbye to your child before you park at the curb to let your child out of your car.

During regular drop-off times, students are to remain in the car until it is safe for them to exit the car onto the curb.

Follow the directions of staff or volunteers on duty in the school parking lot.

Parent resources help you support your child’s learning At the Peel board, our mission is to inspire success, confidence and hope in each child. There is no doubt that families play a vital role in helping us achieve this goal.
