Student Industry NightFebruary 19th was the second EasternRegion Transportation Student-IndustryNight, which brought together students andtransportation professionals for aninformative and fun networking event. Thisyear, we had students from GonzagaUniversity, WSU, and Eastern WashingtonUniversity attend. The evening started out with shortpresentations from a mix of transportationprofessionals. Paul Sharman from TranspoGroup gave an overview of the different fields and focus areas within transportation ata full service private company, AdamMiles fromDOWL talked about finding your careerpath from his perspective having worked both in the private and public industry, andfinally Monica Harwood from WSDOT provided an engaging and entertainingpresentation on the ups and downs of her path to get to a career in transportationoperations. After the presentations, students had the opportunities to talk to themany transportationprofessionals and learn about opportunities at those companies and organizations. Weare very appreciative of our industry participants for supporting our EasternWashingtonStudents. Thank you to Fehr & Peers, Perteet, SCJ Alliance, Transpo Group, WhippleConsultingEngineers, andWSDOT. Thiseventprovidesagreatopportunity for studentsto learn about potential careers in the transportation field – from planning to engineeringand everything in between.

Human Factors, Safety, andAutonomous VehiclesFollowing is a brief summary of Mayuree’spresentation at the ITE/IMSA conference. Her research is on human factors inautonomous vehicles and conducted as apart of the Human Factors and StatisticalModelling Lab. It is expected that havingautonomous vehicles (Level 5) on the roadwill improve safety on the roads andprovide other societal benefits. However, one of the fundamental issues from theperspective of human factors is that howdrivers will react to autonomous vehicleson the road. It is expected that there will be
both autonomous and human-drivenvehicles on the road (called mixed -autonomy traffic) initially. My researchfocuses on carrying experiments on thedriving simulator to understand driverbehavior in this situation. Additionally, Iplan to explore if there is any specific"human driver behavior" that can beinduced into the autonomous vehicles thatwould help it to operate with a largerpossibilityof being able to adjust to humandriven vehicles and pedestrians on theroads.Mayuree Binjolkar, President, UW StudentChapter, PhD Candidate

ITE/IMSA JointConference & VendorExhibitionFebruary 11th, 2019
Unlike last year’s Snowpocalypse, this year’s ITE/IMSA’s joint meetingtook place on a calm February day, allowing for even more attendeesthan last year! The technical programwas filledwith a slewof topics ranging
fromboth theengineeringandplanningside, aswell as thevendor side. As always, our vendor representativesshowed up in force and provided a plethora ofpresentations and demonstrations on their wide range ofproduct offerings, including things like vehicle/bicycle/pedestrian detection systems, emergency vehiclepreemption systems, traffic safety systems, and streetlighting technologies, with a particular emphasis on howthey accommodate emerging technologies like 5Gcommunications. Attendees also learned about topicsranging from safety, curbside management, andemerging technologiesand ITS.We learnedabout variousprojects that local and state agencies areactively working on. The amount ofinformation that was presented would betoo overwhelming to present in this shortnewsletter article, but two particularlyinnovative projects stood out to mepersonally. WSDOT recently implementeda metered roundabout in Steptoe thatdrastically reduced queues that extendedpast theoff-rampandontomainlineSR240.Throughextensive traffic analysis,WSDOTdetermined that drivers in this area weren’tfinding sufficient gaps to enter theroundabout from the off-ramp, resulting inexcessive queues. Though we normallythink of meters being used at on-ramps toprovidegaps inmerging traffic to reduce theimpacts to mainline traffic flows, the sameconcept can be applied to roundabouts. Byproviding a meter for the major conflictingmovement and providing more gaps intraffic, this allowed for off-ramp vehicles toprogress through the roundabout more regularly andfluidly, resulting in backups onto SR 240 being nearlyeliminated. Another interesting project thatwas presentedwas the City of Bellevue’s real-time emergency responsedashboard. This system integrates the City’s Traffic
ManagementCenter (TMC)with the 911 dispatch system. This allows TMC operators to be alerted in real-timewhenever an incident involving emergency respondersoccurs, providing them with a real-time map view ofcurrent incidents and allowing them to proactively monitorroadway conditions using the City’s CCTV cameras andactively adjust signal timing to reduce impacts to thetraveling public. As for the keynote, this year’spresentation was a little different. We had the pleasure ofhaving Mark Etzbach with Acusensus, an Australian-based company focusing on distracted drivingenforcement solutions, present on a pilot project takingplace in New South Wales. There, Acusensus roadsidecameras are being used with artificial intelligence andvideo analytics technologies to determinewhether driversare using their mobile phones while driving.Understanding that privacy is an important concern to thepublic, this system captures and evaluates images at theedge and only keeps images that it deems as probableviolations. These flagged images are then encrypted, privatized and anonymized, and sent to human operatorsfor manual verification. As always, attendees learned a lotat this year’s conference, whether it be about projects thatothers are working on, or the latest and greatest
technologies in our industry. There is no shortage ofinnovation out there, and in order to continue to do so, wemust continue to maintain partnerships and shareknowledge between our engineering, planning, andvendor communities, in keeping with the spirit of our ITE/IMSA joint conference.
