March 2007 Iwade Village News Iwade Village News Iwade Vi11age Clean Up Date for proposed Village Clean Up is Saturday 19th May 2007 Proposed Time is 10am to 2.00pm - Meeting at the corner of Woodpecker Drive by the Village Hall at 10.00am. Possibility of tea coffee/squash being served in Ickle Pickles at 12 midday for all helpers. This is the second year the Village Clean up day has taken place and the plan is to focus on the areas that residents have concerns about around the village. This means volunteers will be split to work in the areas that they have a personal interest and hopefully converging in the centre of the village at the end of the clear up day. The Parish Council are aware that a great deal of the jobs being done should be done by Swale Council but the little bit residents can do to help can only be better for the village. The benefits out way the disadvantages in the Parish Councils opinion. Parish Clerk has already contacted some of the groups in the village to see if they are willing to help such as the Iwade Herons and Beavers/ Cubs. Main tasks in all areas we are aiming to cover: 1. Picking up of all litter, rubbish etc 2. Sweeping of all pathways 3. Tidying of all grass edgings that border pathways, roadside etc 4. Cleaning of Path Signs, Road Signs etc 5. Identifying any areas that need attention by a specialist e.g. Large pot holes in road, broken fencing etc. As well as the above there are areas for each team that need particular attention which are noted under each team brief. Team 1: East Team Starting from roundabout off A249 working along Grovehurst Road to join up with Team 2 (South Team) at Garage and then both teams work down the Street until reach Village Park. Entry gates need attention. Team 2: South Team Start at entry gates to village by Health Centre and work towards Village Centre joining up with Team 1 at Garage and then carry on working down to finish at Village Centre. Entry gates need attention. Team 3: West Team Start at top of School Lane including Playing Field and work down School Lane to meet at Village Park. Team 4: North Team Start at entry gates to village on Ferry Road and work inwards towards Village Centre meeting other teams at Village Park. Entry gates need a lot of attention. If some groups complete their areas very quickly they can join forces with other teams or look at other areas off of the main roads that are not being covered on the clean up day. Obviously the number of groups is dependent upon the number of people that appear. Iwade has again been put into the Village of the Year Competition so the village needs as many volunteers as possible to help. Important Notice Please note that the Annual Parish Meeting will take place on Thursday 19th April 2007 at 7.30pm in the Iwade Village Hall This is an opportunity for residents of the village who are on the register of electors to receive an update on the latest planning and development proposals for the further expansion of the village, to raise questions on any subject. New residents not on the electors register are welcome as observers. Temporary Road Closure - The Street, Iwade Southern Water intend to undertake a mains renewal scheme and in order to carry out these works it will be necessary to temporarily close The Street, Iwade outside of numbers 9 and 11. The temporary Closure will be in operation on or after 25th March 2007 and 1st April 2007. Access will be available up to the point of closure or via a signed diversion route. Iwade WI met on February 21stin the village hall.

Once we had done the businesspart of the meeting, decidedwhich members would beaccepting Bobbing and UpchurchWI's birthday invitations anddiscussed all the other WIactivities planned for the comingmonths, we were joined byUrsula Atkins who gave her talk"Fraulein Tomm-Tomm,Childhood Memories of anEvacuee in Germany andAustria".

The subject sounded as if it mightbe a serious and dour experience.

It was anything but. Ursulaspoke for a full hour, without anyreference to notes, and took us ona journey to her childhood inGermany through the war years. You could have listened toUrsula all evening without beingbored.

She told us how her father hadgone off to the war, leaving theirmother to cope with trying tobring up her and her youngerbrother with all the deprivationsand difficulties of war.

Eventually, the town decided toevacuate its children tosomewhere safer and a youngUrsula found herself on a trainwith no idea of where she wasgoing. Strangely, her mother haddecided to keep Ursula's brotherat home, because, she supposed,he was so young. All alone in theworld, she found herself placedin a children's home.

It was interesting to hear how somany of the experiences of livingthrough the war in Germany

mirrored the social difficulties inthe UK.

Ursula has published a bookabout her wartime experiences, aptly titled "Fraulein Tomm-Tomm, and kindly signed copiesfor anyone who wished to buy acopy.

We held a competition at thismeeting, Something from Austriaor Germany which was won byLily Lammas. Joy White won theFlower of the Month competitionfor a beautiful pink Camellia.

Our next meeting is onWednesday 21 March at 7.30 inthe village hall. We have localhistorian Helen Atkinson comingto speak on "Sittingbourne, aCoaching Town". Thecompetition is for a photographof Sittingbourne, new or old.

At our meeting on 18 April, againin the village hall, we are joinedby writer and journalist MartinGurdon. He will be speakingabout his Travels with his

Chicken and will be bringing oneof his "flock" with him! If you arethinking about joining the WIthis would be a good meeting toattend for a taster. If you wouldlike more information pleasecontact Secretary Hilary Fouldson 01795 474686.

IwadeHerons FC

This month sees the IwadeHerons FC 4th birthday. I bet thegroup of parents that started upthe team for local children in thevillage would have neverimagined it would be as big as itis today. In March 2003 one teamwas formed for under 8's andentered in to the MaidstoneInvicta league. By the middle ofthe summer an under 10's wasborn and entered into theFaversham league. Four yearsdown the line we now have 7teams ranging from under 8's tounder 13's all competing in 3

different leagues and an under7's training squad.

We have a great team ofvolunteers who help run theclub, train the children andmanage the teams all giving uptheir time to do this.

We have had greatsupport from theParish council andmany sponsorsand we continueto do so.

The club wouldlike to thank allthese people frothe support theycontinue to give us.

At Iwade Herons we like topromote football for fun, itdoesn't matter the score line atthe end of the day as long as theplayers enjoy their game.

We now have over 100 club

member some of which havebeen with us from the start.Every season we grow and all arewelcome.

We look forward to the next 4years.

TinkerbellsTinkerbells are sorry to say thatwe will be losing Nicky atEaster, she has been a veryvalued member of staff and afavourite with many of thechildren from the setting, shewill be sorely missed, we will allmiss her, her replacement willhave a hard act to follow. Nickyis moving to be with her partnerand we would all like to wishher and her daughter the verybest for the future.

We have two new members of

staff who joined us after the Febhalf term, Leigh-anne andDonna, and would like towelcome them to our setting.

This term we have been talkingabout things that grow, we had abright display of sunflowers andgrew some cress, we alsomeasured and weighed thechildren, (the staff were morereluctant).as well as otherobjects.

We have been talking aboutanimals and their babies and arehoping to see some baby lambssoon and maybe watch sometadpoles grow.

Tinkerbells are hoping to set upa fund raising committee andhave had a good response fromparents, one of our aims thisyear is to buy a shed so we canput all our outdoor equipmentin to allow us some free space inour storage cupboard.

We are still collecting old mobilephones so if you have any, don'thave to be working and we don'tneed the simm card or charger,we would be grateful. Wemanaged to collect 74 oldphones just before Christmasand with the money raised webrought a new camera for the

setting. Thank you to everyonewho helped us achieve this.

We are still looking for some onewho would like to volunteer tocome to the setting to read astory for the children, once amonth would be great, we havemany story books and propsthat could be used and staffmembers would help. Thechildren really enjoy story time, and a different face from aspecial story teller visitor wouldmake it all the more special, ifyou might be interested pleasecontact Sue or Nina on07818833435. At the January Parish CouncilItems taken from the FebruaryParish Council meeting held onTuesday 13th February 2007

Recycling Scheme in Iwade

Due to the poor start from theRecycling Scheme at thebeginning of the year, it has beennoted that residents are notrecycling as much as they didbefore. Cllr Phil Fearn requestedthat the Parish Council highlightthis in the next edition of theIwade Village News and on thewebsite. This was agreed by allCouncillors present.

Sewer Pipe in School Lane

Iwade Parish Council hadconcerns regarding theinadequate sewerage pipe inSchool Lane. This pipe eruptedthree times last year, spewingraw sewerage onto the footpathand into the road and some intothe nearby drain that runs intothe stream.

The Chairman check to makesure that Councillors hadreceived the copy letters fromCllr Ben Stokes regarding thissituation. All confirmed thatthey had either by email or bypost.

Councillor Ben Stokes advisedthe Parish Council that afternumerous letters sent toSouthern Water and theEnvironment Agency they havesuccumbed to the pressure. CllrBen Stokes was pleased to advisethat the sewage pumping mainpipe from the School LanePumping station is being upsizedfrom 150mm to 300mm diameter. As previous reported the

capacity of the existing main waspreviously identified as the causeof some of the recent incidents.

Due the mains burst, the firstsection of the main to be replacedis from School Lane toWoodpecker Drive (approx 110meters). Work is currentlyplanned to begin on this sectionin March, subject to obtainingpermission for trafficmanagement and access.

Cllr Stokes informed the Councilthat Southern Water have statedthat letters to residents who willbe affected by the work will besent out once details have beenfinalized.

The Parish Council wished tothank Borough Councilor BenStokes for all the hard work andcommitment he had put into thisproject and were pleased withthe outcome.

Cllr Phil Hyde suggested thatpictures of the area should betaken before the work started sothe Parish Council has evidenceof the state of the area before anymajor work starts.

Village Hall Fees

The Parish Clerk advised theParish Council that the fees forthe hire of the hall for the ParishCouncil had gone up by 33%.The Clerk also brought to theattention of the Council that thefollowing clubs had approachedthe Parish Council for assistancedue to this increase:Beavers/Cubs, Iwade Parent andToddler and Iwade WI.

The Parish Council agreed inprincipal to pay for the hall hirefor this clubs, but would waituntil the actual invoices werereceived by the Parish Clerkbefore any payment was made.Clerk to write to the village hall

committee requesting invoices.

Cllr Lisa Older and Cllr SueDowling asked the Parish Clerkto find out when the next VillageHall Committee meeting was asthey would consider attendingthe meetings to see whatimprovements/ suggestionscould be put forward to makesure the village hall was beingused to its full capacity, as at thepresent moment they were awarethat a lot of restrictions werebeing put on hall hires which wasmaking the hall not appealing topotential hirers.

Dates for the Annual ParishCouncil Meeting and the AnnualParish Meeting.

The date for the Annual ParishMeeting is to be scheduled for17th April 2007 at 7.30pm in theVillage Hall.

The Chairman advised theCouncil that this is anopportunity for residents of thevillage who are on the register ofelectors to receive an update onthe latest planning anddevelopment proposals, to askquestions and to raise questionson any subject. However theChairman reminded Councilmembers that new residents whowere not on the electors registerare welcome as observers butunable to raise questions.

The date for the Annual ParishCouncil Meeting will be heldbefore the monthly ParishCouncil meeting on 8th May 2007at 7.30pm in the Village Hall

Grass areas in Ferry Road

Cllr Phil Hyde advised the ParishCouncil that the grass areas infront of Plantation Mews was stillbe parked on by residents wholive in Ferry Road, although thebollards had been put in place

this had not deter these residentsand the grass verges weredestroyed.

It was agreed that the clerkwould get in touch withHighways to see if the ParishCouncil could put a pigeon fencearound these verges and plantbulbs.

Missing 30mph signs

Cllr Phil Fearn advised the ParishCouncil that even after a year ofchasing Kent County CouncilHighways for new replacement30mph signs nothing had beendone. It was agreed that theClerk would write to MichaelSummit advising him again ofthe missing speed signs and see ifParish Council can purchase theirown and get them installed.

Annual Village Clean Up

Cllr Phil Hyde advised the ParishCouncil that due to the success oflast years village clean up thisactivity will be done again.Unlike last year where the CleanUp helpers were too thinlyspread, volunteers would workon selected areas chosen bythemselves which would benefitthe area they lived in..

It was agreed that the ParishClerk would write to theBeavers/ Cubs and IwadeHerons to see if they would bewilling to help this year.

It was agreed that due to theVillage of Year judgement beingin the beginning of June theVillage Clean up would takeplace on Saturday 19th May 2007from 10am to 2pm. All SaintsChurch

One of the privileges of being aminister is to conduct the funeralservice for so many who arevillage folk. To be able to comealongside those suffering thesearing pain of bereavementpresents us with an opportunityto minister far more deeply thanusual. It is for this reason that weare increasingly concerned with

the new thinking of some forhumanist or 'do it yourself'funerals! It is true that it is not alegal requirement to have anordained minister to take theservice, but as one whoexperienced such a service beforeI entered into church leadership,it was most notable how thebereaved seemed to sufferincreased agitation with thefeeling that no one in particularwas there to whom they couldturn. And especially after the

day of the funeral and after thenecessary legal business is allsettled, so often people findthemselves most in need at suchtimes. We are always careful notto intrude but we are only toowilling to be alongside for aslong as is needed.

It will be a sorry time for theChurch if all that Jesus taughtabout the importance of sharingone another's burdens and ofmourning with those who mourn

in put to one side. We are herefor you all and more importantly, our Lord too stands so closewaiting to be allowed in to ourlives. At this time of Lent, as weconcentrate again on the eventsof Easter, let us look to theglorious conclusion of EasterSunday certainly, but not forgetthat we all have to pass throughGood Friday to get there.

God Bless you all. ReverendJacky Davis.
