Our Fall EventsRecap

In the Journal: The Modular Way

Guy Willner speaks about Africa, Russia, and Modular DCs in the DC Journal, Russia’s first datacenter-focused magazine.

Johannesburg in October, the weather is warm and dry in downtown Sandton, a fast-growing business suburb of the city. At the traffic lights a Porsche Cayenne stops in front of us, at ease in its natural habitat, amongst the new glass and steel office blocks growing like fresh plants in this New World city. The experience is repeated at the Teraco datacenter I visit the following morning. It would not look out of place in London or Geneva except for the sign saying “No Guns” at the security entrance gate. Inside the datacenter, rows and rows of computer hardware start up in flashing columns. Teraco hosts NAP Africa, the fastest growing Internet exchange on the African continent, with Google, Akamai, and AT&T amongst its 70 members. As always there is something to learn visiting a new datacenter. This one is the only one I have seen (and I have seen over 100 in the past 15 years) with its own bar, set on the first floor with a nice view over central Joburg. I usually visit the datacenter at least twice a year, being on the board of the company, and I am always sur-prised at how much progress and change has occurred since my last trip. The team has grown to over 50 staff now, with a highly skilled tech support team serving 120 customers ranging from – Internet providers to Swiss banks. Even though Teraco is not a modular datacenter provider/builder in the strictest sense of the word, they do however add capacity to their colocation service in a modular way. Specifically, the white space, the power plants, and the cooling are added in modules as required. Teraco Johannesburg was built in 3 phases – with each phase the size of the physical structure was increased, but additional datacenter capacity (together with the required power and cooling) was only added as needed. The same formula is followed in both the Cape Town and Durban facilities. Our IXcellerate Moscow One Datacentre is no excep-tion of this formula. We have a modular build-out of the UPS systems allowing maximum flexibility in terms of growth and directability of power services within the datacenter. Using smaller-scale environmental units in earlier phases allow us to ramp up power and cooling in bite-size chunks rather than starting the equivalent of a V16 engine for a trip next door. As we move into future phases our power and cooling reach critical mass and allow us to use larger and more efficient chillers. Doing things this way means we keep PUE down right from day one. With sites in Cape Town, Durban and Joburg, Teraco is the “Big Daddy” of datacenter operators in South Africa, and indeed on the entire African Continent. I came back to Moscow wishing we could also drive out of town for an hour and see giraffes and lions, but I am also happy we don’t need to gently remind our guests to leave their guns at the door.
