The Jaguars suffered their first road loss of the season last Sunday 41-24 to the New Orleans Saints. The teams combined for 970 yards of offense, the most by both teams in a game in Jaguars history. The Jaguars allowed a franchise-record 538 yards and had three turnovers. Quarterback Quinn Gray, who made his second career start, completed 20 of 33 passes for a career-high 354 yards and two touchdowns. “We're 5-3 at the halfway point,” Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said. “Our quarterback (David Garrard) is getting healthier; he should return. We have a lot of football in front of us. Clearly we've shown some resolve in this early part of the season, gone out on the road, had a couple big victories. To me as a football team, what we want is in front of us. What we hope to have is in front of us. We need to go out and play good football and take advantage of the oppor- tunity." The Jaguars and Titans have met 25 times in the regular season with the Titans leading the series, 14-11. The Jaguars have won three of the last five games in the series. The Titans defeated the Jaguars, 13-10, on Kickoff Weekend earlier this season. The Jaguars have played the Houston/Tennessee franchise more than any other NFL team. The Jaguars are ranked 16th in the NFL in total offense (331.6 yards per game) at the midway point and fifth in rushing at 139.0 yards per game. JAGUARS DEFEATED 41-24 AT NEW ORLEANS: The Jaguars and Saints com-bined for a franchise-record 970 total yards of offense last Sunday in a 41-24 Saints winat the Louisiana Superdome. Saints QB Drew Brees threw for 445 yards and threetouchdowns and led an offensive attack that produced 538 total yards. Jaguars QBQuinn Gray put together the best game of his career as he had 354 passing yards alongwith two touchdowns. The two teams were tied, 17-17, after the first quarter, the mostpoints by two teams in the first quarter in Jaguars history. The Saints started the scor-ing with a 46-yard field goal by Olindo Mare on their first offensive possession and weresuccessful on an onside kick following the score. Reggie Bush increased the Saintslead to 10-0 with a one-yard touchdown run. The Jaguars responded on their third playfrom scrimmage as Gray hit Reggie Williams for a 80-yard touchdown pass to cut thedeficit to three. The Saints stalled on their next possession and the Jaguars tied thescore on a 30-yard field goal by John Carney. On the ensuing possession, Brees hit onthree consecutive passes with the last a two-yard touchdown pass to Bush. MauriceJones-Drew took the ensuing kickoff a team-record 100 yards for a touchdown to tiethe game at 17-17 at the end of the first quarter. Both offenses stalled on their nextpossession and Brees put the Saints up 24-17 with an eight-yard touchdown pass toLance Moore. Olindo Mare misfired on two field goals at the end of the half from 43and 52 yards. The Jaguars moved the ball down the field to start the second half, butGray was intercepted on the 10th play of the drive by Mike McKenzie who took it 75yards for a touchdown. Following a Jaguars punt, Brees hit David Patten for a four-yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 38-17. Gray cut the Jaguars deficit to 38-24 with a 15-yard touchdown pass to Dennis Northcutt. Gray set up the score with a56-yard pass down the middle of the field to rookie John Broussard. Mare added a 34-yard field goal with 3:05 remaining.
GRAY AND WILLIAMS CONNECT FOR 2ND-LONGEST PLAYIN TEAM HISTORY: QB Quinn Gray hooked up with WR ReggieWilliams for an 80-yard touchdown last week at New Orleans, thesecond-longest play from scrimmage in team history. The Jaguarswere faced with a third-and-10 on their opening possession andwere trailing 10-0 when Gray found Williams down the sideline. Itwas Williams’ team-leading fourth receiving touchdown of the sea-son and matched his total from 2006. He finished with 128 receivingyards.
GRAY STEPS INTO STARTING ROLE: Quinn Gray became the 10th starting quarterbackin franchise history as he made his first career start at Tampa Bay on 10/28. Gray replacedDavid Garrard who suffered a sprained left ankle against Indianapolis on 10/22 and hasmissed the last two weeks. Gray has played in six career games since being signed as anundrafted rookie free agent in 2002 out of Florida A&M. He served as the backup to Garrardfor 10 games in 2006 and saw extensive action in the season-finale at Kansas City on 12/31,completing 13 of 22 passes for 166 yards while rushing for two touchdowns. Gray appearedin NFL Europe in 2003 and led the Frankfurt Galaxy to the World Bowl. The Jaguars signedTodd Bouman on Oct. 25 to back up Gray. Bouman has spent time with Minnesota, NewOrleans and Green Bay.
JAGUARS LOSE CHRIS NAEOLE TO INJURY: Veteran guard Chris Naeole ruptured hisquad tendon last Sunday at New Orleans and is expected to miss the rest of the season.Naeole has played in 154 games with 150 starts over 11 seasons. He signed with the Jaguarsas an unrestricted free agent in 2002 after spending five seasons with the Saints where he wasa first-round pick in 1997. Dennis Norman is expected to start at guard.

THE SERIES: The Jaguars and Titans have met 25 times in the regular season with theTitans leading the series, 14-11. The Jaguars have won three of the last five games in theseries. The Titans rushed for 282 yards on 49 carries, the most by a Jaguars opponent in franchise history. Chris Brown led the Titans rushing attack with 175 yards on 19 carries.Both offenses stalled on their opening drive. JACK DEL RIO IN HIS FIFTH SEASON AS HEAD COACH:Jack Del Rio is in his fifth season as the Jaguars’ head coach with a record of 39-33. Del Rio was named to the post onJanuary 17, 2003, becoming the second head coach in Jaguarshistory. Over the last four years the Jaguars rank seventh in regu-lar season wins among the 32 NFL teams with 34. In 2006 DelRio led the Jaguars to their third consecutive non-losing season at8-8, despite losing 15 players to injured reserve. The Jaguarsdefense has thrived under the guidance of Del Rio as they rankfifth in the NFL over the past five seasons in yards allowed (303.0)and fourth in points allowed (18.1) while the offense is fourth inrushing yards (132.4) and second in fewest turnovers (105).
Del Rio is now in his 23rd year in the NFL, his 12th as acoach. Del Rio spent 11 years as an NFL linebacker and had astandout college career at the University of Southern California.He previously coached in New Orleans (1997-98), Baltimore(1999-2001), and Carolina (2002). SPICER LEADS CLUB WITH FIVE SACKS; LONG WAY FROM CFL: DEPaul Spicer leads the team with five sacks and ranks sixth in the AFC. Spicer,who won the AFC Defensive Player of the Week award following the Houstongame, finished with two sacks of Peyton Manning on 10/22 along with a forcedfumble, three quarterback pressures and six tackles. Spicer has a sack in a threeof the last five games and has 22.5 career sacks. The 22.5 sacks rank tied for fifthin team history with Gary Walker. Spicer has 15.5 sacks in the last 39 games dat-ing back to 2005. MATHIS LEADS SECONDARY: Pro Bowl cornerback Rashean Mathis recorded his 21st career interception in the season-opener againstTennessee. Mathis owns the club’s career record with 21 interceptions and 290 interception return yards. SMITH DEVELOPS INTO ONE OF NFL’S BEST: LB Daryl Smith moved from the outside to the middle in 2006 when Mike Petersonwent down and responded with a career-high 170 tackles. The 170 tackles were the third-most in the NFL. Smith ranks third on the club in2007 with 63 tackles (40 solo) along with five passes defensed and a team-high three tackles for loss. NORTHCUTT PROVIDES LEADERSHIP: The Jaguars signed veteran wide receiver Dennis Northcutt as an unrestricted free agent fromCleveland in the offseason to provide leadership to the unit. Northcutt leads the club with 23 receptions for 323 yards along with two touch-downs. Northcutt, who also serves as the club’s punt returner, scored his first touchdown as a Jaguar at Kansas City 10/7 and he hauled in a40-yard reception on the same drive. QUARTERBACKS (3) — The offense has a new leader this season with the addition of Dirk Koetter as offensive coordinator.Koetter has spent the last nine seasons as a head coach on the collegiate level, including six seasons at Arizona State where the Sun Devilsaveraged nearly 30 points per game over that time. David Garrard, a fourth-round pick in 2002, returns for his sixth season in Jacksonvilleand entered the season for the first time as the team’s starter. Garrard, who has a 14-10 career record as a starter, suffered a sprained leftankle in the second quarter on against Indianapolis on 10/22 and has missed the last two games. RUNNING BACKS (5) — Fred Taylor is in his 10th season with the Jaguars after being selected in the first round of the 1998 draft.Taylor has the second-most rushing yards (9,987) by an active NFL running back and is looking to eclipse the 10,000-yard mark. He is onlythe second player in team history to play 10 seasons as a Jaguar, and is the only player who remains on the Jaguars roster from 1998.Taylor and second-year pro Maurice Jones-Drew give the Jaguars one of the NFL’s top running back duos. Jones-Drew, who also serves askickoff returner, leads the team with five touchdowns (4 rushing, 1 return) and ranks second in rushing with 435 yards on 82 carries and sec-ond in receptions with 20 for 220 yards. Fourth-year pro Greg Jones, who missed the 2006 season with a knee injury, starts at fullback andhas 13 carries for 29 yards and one touchdown through eight games. 2006 undrafted free agent Montell Owens excels on special teamsand backs up Jones at fullback. Former 2003 fourth-round draft choice LaBrandon Toefield has played in 44 games in four seasons and re-signed with the Jaguars in the offseason. Toefield saw his first action of the season at Tampa Bay on 10/28 and scored on a one-yard run inthe first quarter.
WIDE RECEIVERS (5) — The Jaguars signed eight-year veteran Dennis Northcutt as an unrestricted free agent from Cleveland inthe offseason. Northcutt, who also serves as the club’s punt returner, has played in 107 games with 52 starts over the past seven-plus sea-sons and leads the club with 23 receptions for 323 yards after eight games. The Jaguars used their first round picks in 2004 and 2005 todraft wide receivers Reggie Williams and Matt Jones. Williams recorded the first 100-yard receiving game of his career last week at NewOrleans as he finished with six receptions for 128 yards and one touchdown. He leads the team with four receiving touchdowns in 2007.Jones led the team with 643 receiving yards in 2006 on 41 receptions and four touchdowns and scored his first touchdown of the season atTampa Bay on 10/28. Ernest Wilford, a fourth-round pick in 2004, has started 28 games the last two-plus seasons and ranks first in teamhistory with a 14.7 career receiving yards average. Seventh-round selection John Broussard shined during the preseason to earn a rosterspot and has four receptions for 126 yards including a 47-yard touchdown reception in the season opener vs. Tennessee.
TIGHT ENDS (4) — Assistant head coach Mike Tice took over the tight ends position in 2007 and has a plethora of talent to workwith. Former first-round pick Marcedes Lewis was hampered with injuries as a rookie and he has had an impact on the passing game in hissecond season. Lewis, who played in 15 games in 2006, ranks second on the club in 2007 with a career-high 20 receptions for 220 yards.Fifth-year pro George Wrighster led the club’s tight ends in 2006 with 39 receptions for 353 yards and three touchdowns. Greg Estandia,who spent last season on the practice squad, has seven receptions for 119 yards through eight games. Estandia injured his foot at TampaBay on 11/28 and Isaac Smolko was signed off the practice squad prior to last week’s game at New Orleans.
OFFENSIVE LINE (8) — The Jaguars offensive line paved the way for a single-season franchise record for rushing yards (2,541) in2006 while also alllowing just 30 sacks, the second-fewest in franchise history. The unit added right tackle Tony Pashos in the offseason.Pashos played the last four seasons with Baltimore and signed with the Jaguars on the first day of free agency. Khalif Barnes anchors theleft tackle spot where he has started 33 games since being drafted in the second round of the 2005 draft. The Jaguars started the seasonwith a different look on the interior of the offensive line. Center Brad Meester, who has started 112 games, broke his ankle on the third dayof training camp and returned to the lineup on 10/14 against Houston. Seven-year veteran Dennis Norman started the first four games atcenter and is expected to move to guard this week following a season-ending injury (ruptured quad tendon) to 11-year veteran Chris Naeolelast week at New Orleans. Fifth-year pro Vince Manuwai starts at left guard. Maurice Williams, who started every game in five of the lastsix seasons, provides experienced depth. Williams has made two starts at left tackle for Barnes this season. The Jaguars selected guardUche Nwaneri (5th round) in the draft and he is a backup at guard and center. Richard Collier earned a roster spot as a undrafted freeagent last season and serves as a backup at tackle. Collier is currently on the club’s Reserve/Suspended list.
DEFENSIVE LINE (10) — The defensive line stands among the strongest and deepest positions on the squad as the unit has a mix-ture of size and speed. The defensive line features two Pro Bowl tackles in seventh-year veteran Marcus Stroud and sixth-year pro JohnHenderson, and they are regarded as perhaps the best tandem in the NFL. Stroud has started three of the last four Pro Bowls whileHenderson has played in two of the last three Pro Bowls. Reggie Hayward returns to action after missing 15 games with an Achilles injurysuffered against Dallas in the 2006 season-opener. He recorded a team-leading 8.5 sacks in his first season with the Jaguars in 2005.Defensive end Paul Spicer leads the club with five sacks and has a sack in three of the last five games. Defensive end Bobby McCray hasdeveloped into one of the NFL’s top pass rushers as he led the team with a career-high 10 sacks in 2006. Rob Meier has the ability to playevery position on the line and has 2.5 sacks in 2007. The Jaguars have added speed off the edge the last two seasons with 2006 fifth-roundpick Brent Hawkins and third-year pro Kenny Pettway. Hawkins, who played in six games as a rookie before suffering a groin injury, regis-tered a career-high 1.5 sacks in week two against Atlanta. Pettway saw action on a season-high 31 plays last week at New Orleans and fin-ished with two tackles and a forced fumble. The Jaguars signed veteran Grady Jackson last week to add depth at tackle. The Jaguarsdrafted former Notre Dame nose guard Derek Landri in the fifth round and he adds depth behind Henderson and Stroud.
LINEBACKERS (4) — Mike Peterson returns from an injury in 2006 to man the middle of the defense. Peterson, who suffered atorn pectoral muscle and missed 11 games, has led the club in tackles in five of the first eight games and recorded a career-high two sacksagainst Atlanta in week two. Fourth-year pro Daryl Smith starts on the outside after leading the team in 2006 with a career-high 170 tackles.Smith moved from the outside to the middle to replace Peterson last year. Second-year pro Clint Ingram missed the first three games withan ankle injury he suffered in the preseason, but has started the last five weeks. Ingram started 11 games as a rookie and totaled 117 tack-les, the fourth-most among all NFL rookies. Second-year pro Brian Iwuh, who had a 24-yard interception return for a touchdown at GreenBay in the preseason, adds depth at the position and sees action on special teams. 2007 second-round pick Justin Durant possesses out-standing speed and is a key contributor on special teams. Durant is currently on the club’s Reserve/Suspended list.

DEFENSIVE BACKS (9) — The Jaguars secondary has a different look in 2007 as the unit has two new safeties in the starting line-up. Fifth-year pro Rashean Mathis has emerged as one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks as he was named a starter for his first Pro Bowl lastyear. Mathis, who has led the team in interceptions for three straight seasons, recorded his 21st career interception against Tennessee in theseason-opener. Brian Williams starts opposite Mathis on the right side. Williams has started 69 of 83 games in five-plus seasons andtotaled 15 interceptions including one in back-to-back games. Williams has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury and wasreplaced by veteran Aaron Glenn. Glenn, who has started 173 of 199 games over 14 seasons, has recorded 41 career interceptions includ-ing one at Tampa Bay on 10/28 that he returned 28 yards for a touchdown .The Jaguars count on a veteran and a rookie to man the backend of the defense. The Jaguars released veteran strong safety Donovin Darius and lost free safety Deon Grant to free agency. GeraldSensabaugh started the first two games at safety, but suffered a shoulder injury against Atlanta and was placed on injured reserve. First-round pick Reggie Nelson starts at free safety while veteran Sammy Knight is the strong safety. Knight, who is in his 11th NFL season, hasstarted 160 of 166 career games at strong safety and ranks fourth among active players with 40 interceptions. Rookie Chad Nkang movedfrom linebacker to safety in training camp and excelled on special teams in the preseason. Veteran Terry Cousin has thrived in the startingnickel role the last two seasons, and he is backed by Scott Starks. Starks has not missed a game in his first two seasons, mainly seeingaction on special teams.
KICKERS/SPECIALISTS (4) — Joe DeCamillis is in his first season as the Jaguars special teams coordinator after spending thepast 14 seasons as a NFL special teams coach. Josh Scobee, a fifth-round pick by the Jaguars in 2004, is in his fourth season as the place-kicker. Scobee injured his quad during pregame warmups prior to the season opener and is out indefinitely. The Jaguars signed 18-year vet-eran John Carney and he is 9 of 11 on field goals in seven games. Carney ranks fourth in NFL history in scoring with 1,792 points. FormerMaryland punter Adam Podlesh assumes the role as the Jaguars punter after being drafted in the fourth round of this year’s draft, the firstpunter taken overall and highest-drafted punter in Jaguars history. Nine-year veteran Joe Zelenka handles the long snapping duties.
