It was announced that Jamberoo PS would be receiving $3,358 for our veggie gardens. The aim of the project will be to install a new watering system to the existing tank and purchase two new flatbed garden carts to transport seedlings to the school hall to sell at Friday assemblies. The project envisages raising vegetable seedlings from seeds to use in garden beds and also sell to the school community, bringing together the local community of parents, grandparents and students to promote a healthy and active lifestyle. The grant will allow students to experience the full cycle of plant life and the growing of vegetable seedlings locally, whilst making an existing water system more streamlined, less cumbersome and more efficient. A huge thank you goes to Mrs Naomi Poole for the tremendous amount of effort and time she put into the grant application. The school is always very thankful to Mrs Poole because of her dedication to ensuring that every possible grant that is available is pursued. Also, a big thank you to Mrs McCormack for her assistance in putting the grant application together and her ongoing commitment to the school’s veggie gardens. The school is very much looking forward to utilising Kiama Council’s grant funds in the very near future.

New Enrolments

I would like to take this opportunity to officially welcome Eva Heffernan, Jesse Price and Riley Price to Jamberoo Public School. Eva, Jesse and Riley will be wonderful assets to Nuninoona, Cooinda and Wonga Wonga respectively. We are all looking forward to working with both families in providing the children with many memorable learning experiences now and in the future.

Student Attendance Over the past few weeks there have been quite a few students in the school who are regularly turning up late. School commences at 9am, it is vitally important that students are at school by that time to ensure their learning and the learning of others is not disrupted. It is understandable that on occasion students have appointments booked or occasionally run late due to unforseen circumstances. However, regular tardiness is not acceptable. Please ensure that your child is at school by 9am and that running late is a seldom event rather than a regular one.

Winter Winter is fast approaching. Although we are getting some nice sunny and clear days the mornings and afternoons are quite cool. This means students are taking jumpers on and off and leaving them while they play. Please make sure names are on all items of clothing so they can be returned. A reminder that different coloured jumpers are not acceptable and are not a part of the school uniform.

Sport and Physical Activity Policy The JPS student welfare committee is currently reviewing our Sport and Physical Activity Policy. One of the goals of the committee is to ensure students at Jamberoo Public School are provided with a minimum of 150 minutes of planned moderate with some vigorous physical activity across the school week. These planned, whole school and class activities include participation in physical education, fundamental movement skills, school/class sport, gala days, PSSA sport, Dance2BFit, School Gymnastics, Southern Stars, swimming, cross country, athletics carnivals, South Coast Dance Festival and the Little Athletics Program for Schools. Jamberoo Public School’s Sport and Physical Activity Policy aims to:

• Encourage participation by all students in sporting activities commensurate with their physical, mental, social, emotional and skill development.

• Provide opportunity for playing a wide variety of sports within competitive and recreational environments.

• Develop the capacity to make reasoned decisions about ethical issues in sport that will lead to good player and spectator behaviour.

• Develop skill and fitness specific to particular sports so that all students can experience success through enjoyable participation.

• Contribute through participation to the social, cognitive, physical, emotional and aesthetic aspects of the student’s development.

• Develop a lifelong appreciation for physical activity and understand the health benefits these activities provide.

Once completed, the document will be made available to the Jamberoo school community on the school’s website.

Mathletics The Mathletics program has proven to be an effective and fun way to practise and consolidate mathematical learning, both at school and at home as it supports programs taught in all classes. Student levels are monitored by class teachers to provide for individual needs. The cost for each student is $15.50. Please forward payments to the office ASAP.

Mogo A great time was had by all at last week’s Stage 3 excursion to Mogo. The students visited Mogo Zoo, where they had the opportunity to see many exotic animals and listen to some very informative shows. Next stop was Mogo Town. Students were engaged in gold panning, exploring mine shafts and being shown what life was like for gold diggers in the 1850’s. Thank you to the wonderful students for their excellent behaviour and to Mrs McGee and Mrs Behl-Shanks for getting up so early and supervising the students throughout the day.

The winners will be presented with their prize and there will also be some Highly Commended Awards from each school as well (1 Winner & 2 Highly Commended).

Southern Illawarra Music Festival (SIMF) Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) students are participating in the Southern Illawarra Music Festival this year and have been practising our massed choir items. We have also just started to learn the first individual item that our school is performing, which has been exciting.

Students are looking forward to attending the first rehearsal day with other schools at Albion Park Rail Public School on Thursday 5th July (Week 10).

Parents and carers, if you have not yet responded to the Care Monkey note, please do so. Also, I’d like to remind you that there is an $8.50 fee for the bus. (In the past, we have used parent transport for this event, but feedback from families showed that parents prefer us to use bus transport). Please send your money to the office by Monday 2nd July.

Well done to these students, who have already paid their money: Rylan Aquilina, Lucy McDonnell, Ruby Palk, Finn Pedersen, Annabelle Young, Jett Hodgkinson, Jack Woolley

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea Thanks to Jamberoo students' generosity, the SRC was able to raise $491 to support those Australians living with cancer. This money could pay for two patients transport and night's stay for people who need to travel for vital cancer treatment AND pay for a cancer nurse to be available for 3 hours on a helpline to offer expertise and support to those in need. That is a terrific effort by our small school! Well done hard-working SRC, who provided lots of yummy baked goods and manned our stall so efficiently.

Premiers Debating Challenge This Monday will see our two Premiers Debating teams taking on teams from Minnamurra and Kiama in a Zone Debating Day. Parents and supporters are most welcome to come to watch. We wish all the best to Will, Jules, Miah and Ethan (Roos) and Jack, Alex, Romany and Ella-Mae (Jambers) as they put all of their hard work into practice. Debate 1 (9.30 - 10.30) Jambers vs Minnamurra Gold (library)  and Roos vs Kiama Yellow (lower room, by the uniform shop). Debate 2 (11.55 - 12.55) Minnamurra Gold vs Roos (library) and Jambers vs Kiama Blue (lower room) Debate 3 (2.15 - 3.15) Jambers vs Yellow (library) and Roos vs Minnamurra Green (lower room)

Please note - as we will be using the hall and library to host our debates, a short Monday morning assembly will take place on the basketball courts instead of the hall, and library lessons usually held on a Monday will take place at a later time in the week.

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition This week, we held the MCPS competition for interested students in Year 3 - 6. I must say, this was the highest level of competition that I have adjudicated at our in-school level in nearly  ten years of coordinating the event.  The students demonstrated their  advanced  speaking prowess, presenting well-researched, engaging speeches on a range of multicultural topics. The impromptu speeches were also of the highest calibre, with every student able to make eye contact with the audience in sharing their ideas on a topic they were presented just 5 minutes earlier. Wow, kids - you didn't make my job easy!

Congratulations to Molly, Cooper, Flynn, Jazmine, Cameron, Sarah, Lilli Mawbey, and Deni (who deserves special mention as our only Year 3 representative) in Stage 2, and Alex, Jack, Jules, Ebonnie, Ollie Harris, Romany and Hannah, who represented Stage 3. You certainly all showed your gift of the gab and the confidence we have come to expect of Jamberoo speakers. The 4 students representing us at the Zone level of MCPS competition (which we will be hosting on Tuesday 12th June) will be announced at Friday's assembly.

Families of Jamberoo I am looking into obtaining funding for a program for pre-schoolers that is similar to the Park and Play service in Shellharbour and the Dapto Play Rangers, they are funded by the Federal Government. A Park and Play set up is a free service for 0-5yr olds that comes to your local park. They have different play activities, once or twice a week. Would families be interested in participating? Please let me know. [email protected]

Bike Day! We have two Bike Days this term. For families who are new to the school, we have a Bike Day twice a term to encourage active lifestyles for our students, and also to teach the safety rules associated with riding bikes.

If your child would like to participate in Bike Day, they may bring to school their bike or scooter. Please note that this is not an instructional time, so your child needs to be able to ride the bike or scooter that they bring. Students will not be able to participate if they do not have a helmet. Thank you to Stage 2 and 3 students who assist with holding safety signs and directing traffic.

Our dates will be:

Week 6 Tuesday (5 June) for K-2 students Thursday (7 June) for 3-6 students

Week 9 Tuesday (26 June) for K-2 Friday (29 June) for 3-6
