GENERAL INFORMATION

CURRENT INTERESTS AND ACOMPLISHMENTS

I am interested in academic and research activities in general. In research I am mainly working in the area of

middleware, software architecture, software engineering, networking, and parallel and distributed computing.

I published over 70 refereed international journal and conference papers and I received multiple research

grants including the Sun Microsystems, Inc. (USA) Academic excellence award in 2006 and several United

Arab Emirates University (UAEU) research grants. As for teaching, I like to teach at both the graduate and

undergraduate levels and I am capable of teaching in different areas of information technology (IT) and

computer science and engineering. I have a strong background in middleware, distributed systems,

networking, software engineering, security and capable of teaching most base courses such as programming,

data structures and algorithms. I taught over 12 different courses in three different universities in Bahrain,

USA and UAE. My students‟ evaluations and peer reviews of teaching were excellent.

such as Distributed Systems, Internet, Cloud and Grid Computing, Services Computing and Networking. I

TEACHING INTERESTS

I have teaching interests and capabilities that cover a wide span of courses in the Information Technology

Field. These include middleware, distributed/networked systems, systems analysis and design,

systems/software architecture and development, networking, algorithms, mobile/ubiquitous computing,

parallel computing, project management and information systems. In the non-technical view, my teaching

interest is to be a good teacher, be able to reach the students and encourage them to develop new skills and

enhance existing ones. I use the class time not to only teach the concepts in the course, but also to address

more generic skills and self-learning abilities.

TEACHING EVALUATION

My teaching evaluations at UAEU from both students and per reviewers were excellent. Based on the

students‟ surveys conducted by the university each semester, I was generally above college average and in

most cases above university average in all categories. For example in Fall 2008 for “Q1. The instructor made

content easy to understand.” My average score was 4.55 and 4.77 out of 5 for the two sections I taught. As for

“Q9. Overall, how would you grade your instructor for this course?” for the same courses, my average score

was 3.85 and 3.77 out of 4. I have also gone through several peer evaluations; an informal one in Spring 2007

and another in Spring 2008 and two in Fall 2009. The overall feedback in all cases was very good and I was

complemented on the style and methods I used in class. In addition, the reviewers provided me with some

pointers to further enhance my teaching and the techniques I use, which I am taking into consideration.

COURSES DEVELOPED/REDEVELOPED

1. Physical Design of Information Systems, a senior-level course. The content of the course extends the concepts

students learned in systems analysis and logical design to the more practical issues involved in system

development and deployment. Topics like physical data design, systems architecture, development environments

and implementation techniques were included. In addition, the course also covers issues such as software quality

assurance practices, testing, integration and documentation. Furthermore, data conversion, system changeover

and training topics were also covered. The design and development of the course involved preparing all the

teaching material (slides, articles, notes, etc.), preparing discussion tasks, homework assignments, exams and a

course project. Along with the course a lab was designed to cover more hands-on components on object oriented

databases, development environments, testing plans and systems integration.

2. Middleware Systems and E-Business Sites, a senior-level course. The course content was redesigned and updated

to cover the latest middleware technologies and distributed computing paradigms. A new lab structure was

introduced to allow the students to have hands-on experience of the programming techniques for distributed

systems and a course project was used to further expose the students to the design and implementation issues of

distributed systems and e-business applications.

3. Ad Hoc Networks, a graduate-level elective course for master and doctoral students in the computer engineering,

computer science and networked information systems programs. The course is designed to highlight state-of-the-

art techniques and concepts in the area and involve the students in advanced research activities.

4. Systems Analysis and Design. Redesigned the course structure to include a practical project executed over well

defined phases based on the course material. Students were encouraged to work in teams and submit official

project progress reports. This allowed students to have a realistic view of the analysis and design phases of the

software development life cycle. Also currently working with faculty from the MIS program at the Faculty of

Business to further enhance the course and open it to students from our college and the MIS program as well.

TEACHING TOOLS

Actively used available tools and technologies such as the smart boards and interactive online tools to enhance

lectures. The Blackboard system is heavily used to deliver and maintain course documentation, students work and

communications. The Smart Board System in class is heavily used to deliver presentations, provide interactive

walkthrough sessions over the Internet, show demonstrations and keep track of class processions. In addition,

programming tools and specialized application software were used where appropriate to increase students‟ skills

and exposure and allow them to apply the concepts learned in practical situations.

Used group work and discussion-based assignments to stimulate students interests in the topic studied. One of the

methods I introduced was to form small groups and assign external reading material and guiding questions for the

students to follow. Then in class the groups initiate and run a discussion session covering the topic and the

questions posed. This allowed the students to have more freedom in the discussion (without my interference) and

increased their acceptance to the topics since they actually participated in preparing and in delivering the content.

Participated in developing a teaching tool and making it available for the students. This tool can be used easily to

retrieve and reuse any information available over the Internet. This tool opens new doors for new types of

students' projects that depend on live information available on the Internet. This class was already utilized by a

number of students for their projects during the 2007/2008 academic year.

STUDENT EVALUATION TOOLS

In the courses I taught I used several techniques to evaluate the students‟ performance the measure their

understanding of the topics. These techniques also helped create an assessment for the course based on the

course outcomes. Some tools are traditional including written exams and quizzes, and homework

assignments, where I created different sets of questions combining multiple choice, true/false, short answer

and essay questions. In addition, I use in class discussion-based sessions using pre-assigned readings or

research items and grade the students‟ participation and input in the discussions. Projects are also used to

evaluate the students‟ abilities to apply the concepts and to work together in teams.

DESSIMINATION OF TEACHING PRACTICES

As I taught different courses at different universities, I was able to pick up on some methodologies and

teaching techniques that worked well for certain types of courses and students. At UAEU, I developed a new

senior level course (ISBP420 Physical Design of Information Systems) and one of the main issues I had to

resolve was how to introduce technical articles as required material. I knew that just explaining what is in

them will not be enough because unlike textbooks, these articles are more intense and go straight to the

depths. So I decided to go through guided reading assignments and class discussions. I moved the ownership

from me as an instructor and gave it to the students. This really worked very well. Accordingly, I decided to

share this technique with the faculty members of the FIT. Therefore, I gave a seminar and a discussion session

about this technique. Several faculty members attended and there was great interest to discuss the technique

and analyze it. We went over several issues such as motivations, grading, control, etc. We also discussed how

is it possible to refine the model and adapt it to other classes. One faculty member informed me that it would

be very suitable for her advanced class because that class also required the inclusion of technical articles.

ADVISING STUDENTS (RESEARCH ACTIVITIES)

Guided undergraduate research assistants (Alyaziyah Al-Dhaheri and Fatmah Al-Abdouli) in performing

research activities in a project on Security Middleware for ubiquitous and pervasive Systems. This project

was funded by a UAEU Individual grants, 2008 and 2009.

Guided undergraduate research assistant (Shaikha Shamisi) in performing research activities in a project

on Wireless Ad Hoc Networks Applications. This project was funded by a UAEU Individual grant, 2008.

Guided undergraduate research assistants (Ahlam Kharbash, Amal Al-Dhaheri and Fatima AlQayedi) in

performing research activities in a project on Middleware for resource discovery in mobile Systems:

EXTENSION AND OUTREACH ACTIVITIES

Actively participated in the student recruitment activities for the FIT, UAEU in the academic year

2008/2009 and was involved in organizing and executing several activities and initiatives in that area.

Participated in the UAEU - UGRU girls welcome sessions held February 26th, 2009 in Maqam

Campus.

Participated in UAEU College Fair held in Dubai March 17th, 2009.

Worked with the student recruitment committee to design and generate promotional material for FIT.

Worked with the student recruitment committee to formalize a plan to increase the number of students

enrolling at the college. Part of the effort was to formulate a request to adjust the admission and

transfer requirements for the FIT to match the general university requirements. Another is to work on

an overall promotional campaign to increase the FIT visibility and promote the IT programs at the

FIT. This includes creating media coverage, community activities and a good set of publications

about the FIT.

Gave a guided tour of the FIT and a presentation about the programs and activities to a visiting group

of students from Al Raheeb Girls High School (AlFujairah) who visited us March 24th, 2009.

Participated in the organization of The Information Technology Marathon Competition and IT Fair

accompanying it and served as a judge. The event targets high school students and some younger children

to increase their awareness and interest in IT in general and in the FIT in particular.

Consultancy/Advisory Services

Participated in Google Second Faculty Summit based on a personal invitation from Google held at

Google‟s Headquarters in Zurich, Switzerland from February 9 to 12, 2009. During that summit I

contributed in several activities:

Gave a technical presentation on “Agent-Based Collaboration Support for large-scale heterogeneous

infrastructures”

Gave a technical presentation on “Challenges of Arabic-Based Applications”

Participated as a panel member in a panel discussing “Resource Management for Distributed

Systems"

Had one on one discussion with Google engineers to discuss current technological challenges and

explore possible collaboration ventures with Google.

Was interviewed by AlArabya TV station for a report discussing Google‟s efforts to increase the use

of Arabic Language and the challenges facing this venture.

Collaborated with a number of stock investment professionals in the GCC along with Dr. Nader

Mohamed to define the current shortages of networked and real-time tools to support that important

sector. A number of these tools are identified that are specialized for the GCC financial markets. The

main aim of this collaboration is to develop some online and real-time technologies related to stock

investments in the GCC. This collaboration also motivates some research ideas in the field of middleware

and network services which I am currently investigating.

Established relations with several employees at different organizations such as: UAEU, UITS, Tawam

Hospital and Zayed House for Islamic Culture, where the relationships are generating some ideas that we

can explore to increase collaboration between IT faculty and students and these organizations. Started

contacts with faculty members working in similar areas of research at other UAE institutes such as the

American University at Sharjah. Established contacts with people from Track IT Solutions FZ LLC, from

Dubai regarding RFID equipment and software development kit that we are using for research.

Organization of College-Level Seminars

One of the most important aspects of success as faculty members and instructors is being good facilitators of

student learning. To achieve this we try various techniques, employ different teaching/learning models and

approaches and we also incorporate technology into the mix to further enhance the process. Each one has a

unique style and special methods and we all succeeded in some approaches and fail in others. In an attempt to

help enhance our knowledge and techniques, I initiated a series of discussion sessions centered on this theme

at FIT, UAEU. The sessions are an open forum to explore teaching/learning methods and faculty members‟

experiences with them. This series is done on a voluntary basis for the faculty members.

Contribution/Commitment to the Application of International Standards

Participated in activities related to obtaining an accreditation for the IT undergraduate programs in the

FIT, UAEU. This includes coordinating, developing/enhancing and assessing the following courses:

Physical Design of Information systems, Middleware Systems and E-Business sites, Network Operating

Systems, and Systems analysis and Design.

Followed standard procedures in managing courses and providing course portfolios and assessments that

conform to accreditation requirements.

Worked with the Information Systems Track coordinator and faculty members of the FIT, UAEU to

create mappings for the course outcomes corresponding to the overall college outcomes that were

required for accreditation.

Peer Evaluations for Academic Purpose Activities

As a member of the research and graduate studies committee, FIT, UAEU, I reviewed research grant

progress reports submitted by faculty members at the college for interdisciplinary grants.

Student Advising and Counseling Activities

Designed and conducted a career development series for the senior students at the FIT, UAEU. This

involved the preparation of informative material and presentations on CV preparations, Cover letters,

interview skills and creating a professional portfolio.

Assisted students in their application process for graduate studies at local and international universities. I

also wrote recommendation letters on their behalf. In addition, I assisted several students in their job

application process by providing advice and recommendation letters.

Helped two of the FIT students (Ebtisam Al Jabrie and Mitha Al Kinday) prepare for the Tamaiz Award.

They won second place across UAE and received AED 15,000, a certificate and competition trophy.

Helped several students (not in my classes) providing answers and support for their IT-Core, Senior and

other courses.

Supervised groups of the FIT girl students in GITEX 2006 and Innovation'06 visits.

Participated and helped in a number of the FITA (FIT Association) activities. Was honored by the FITA

Ladies as one of the supportive FIT faculty members (FITA Thank you party May 2009).

Helped several students in their projects for the Speaking and Writing English course in forming their

project ideas and in finding design solutions for the ideas.

COMMUNITY As part of the effort to attract more UAE nationals into research and academic careers, in cooperation

with faculty members at the FIT, UAEU and with The Emirates Foundation for Philanthropy (EF), I

organized two workshops to inform senior students and alumni from the scientific colleges at UAEU

about two important programs: The UAEU Teaching assistants program which prepares outstanding

students to take on faculty positions at UAEU and the EF PhD Fellowship Program which offers

scholarships for excellent students who wish to study for a PhD degree.

Participated in the preparation for the UAEU College Fair held in Dubai and was one of the FIT

representatives at the fair, March 2009.

Participated in community outreach activities involving visits from high school students to the FIT

campus (Example: visiting students from Al Raheeb Girls High School, Al Fujairah), March 2009.

Participated in the organization and execution of The Information Technology Marathon (IT Marathon)

Competition and the IT fair accompanying the event and I also served as a judge in the events. This event

serves the community by allowing schools students to have a better understanding of IT and giving them

a chance to consider the field as a career path.

Participated in a survey for a PhD Dissertation by Farooq AlTameemy at Indiana University, USA. The

survey covers the topic of distance learning issues in the Middle East region.

Participated in a survey for a doctoral study by Tarek Ayass at the University of Phoenix about

Investigation of the Antecedents of e-Commerce Trust Model.

Introduced the FIT to some visitors from high schools in UAE, Spring 2009.

Organized a section in the National Day Festival and Bazaar event in UAEU, 28 November 2007.
