volunteer group that spends many hours in planning and putting together the
many events that our members enjoy throughout the year. Many thanks go out
to them.
Well be starting our January activities off with a Pancake Breakfast on Saturday
January 9th. Hours are 7:30am to 11am in the Conference Hall. Still the best
deal in town at $5pp, so gather up the grandkids and neighbors and enjoy a
great breakfast. Then on Sunday January 31st it will be another great Trash and
Treasures event. It will be held in the Conference Hall from 9am ‘till 2pm. Tables
are only $20 to rent and individuals, families, organizations, clubs and any other
groups that wish to sell and barter are encouraged to get involved. It’s a great
giant market and there will deals galore.
We are in need of Kitchen volunteers and other food service volunteers. Full
training will be provided for these positions and fl exibility is always a priority.
Please get in touch with our Volunteer Coordinator ,Deanne if you can help out.
We are also looking for people who may be interested in getting involved with
the Special Events Committee. As mentioned previously, these are the people
that plan our activities and we need some of you folks with the creative minds to
help us out....again, please see Deanne.
We on the Executive are still working on the details of the distribution of revenue
from special events. We had a vigorous discussion at our December meeting
and it was decided due to time constraints to continue at our January meeting.
We have had input from some of our clubs and members and we thank you for
that. Hopefully we can fi nalize this issue at our January meeting.
Please note that our AGM will be held on Wednesday February 10th at 1pm in
the Rotary Hall. Elections will be held. All positions on the executive are open to
any member interested. There is a nominating committee in place so if you are
interested please contact VP Nettie or Secretary Dianne for further information.
Congratulations to our December Volunteer of the Month, Ardith Chambers.
Ardith is a busy Evergreen member and a defi nitive write up about her was
included in the December newsletter......and on behalf of myself and the
Executive we wish all of you a very HAPPY NEW YEAR....may 2016 be good to
you all........adios......gk

Happy New Year everyone! Sure hope
everyone had a wonderful Christmas
and all remembered to sing “Auld
Lang Syne” on “Hogmanee”. We sure
had a great time singing not only to
our usual fans, but sure entertained a
lot more. Everyone loved our songs
and our soloists did a fabulous job!
Also wouldn’t have been Christmas
without our Harry reciting “Twas the
Night Before Christmas”. Everyone got
a laugh out of yours truly pantomiming
to the poem. Thanks to all of you who
dressed a LA Christmas – Ho! Ho! Santa
Loved You. It’ll be fun getting back to
our usual schedule and slowing down
just a wee bit – Ha! Ha! We’ll still be
getting together Friday mornings,
10:00 – 11:30am in the Rotary Hall.

Our fi eld trip to Art Knapps resulted
in many beautiful pictures and a 4K
movie. We selected our Musical
Instrument photos which will be
hanging on the wall for the month of
Jan. Our photoshoot of the Christmas
displays on 5th was postponed due
to rain. We had an education session
on how to shoot Christmas lights so
are looking forward to a rescheduled
date. Upcoming topics include
creating greeting and photo cards;
why pictures don’t come out the way
we expect when printing; Lens - how
do we know what one to use and what
to expect; as well as hands on sessions
to learn about various settings. We
met Dec 15 for our Christmas lunch.
We meet the fi rst and third Tuesday of
the month in the Soroptimist Room at
1:00 pm (or 12pm if you want to sit in
on the Lightroom session).

be fi lled with good health and
contentment the year through.
Our Club is once again off , refreshed
by the short break, singing and playing
our ukuleles. Do drop in and join us;
we are a friendly bunch, and welcome
all. If you are thinking that you might
like to learn to play the Uke, come
down and listen, and hear what we
do. We do have a “loaner” uke, that
can be signed out, and taken home
for 2 weeks, so that you can practice.
That way you get a taste of the Uke,
without putting out the dollars right
away. The ukulele is an incredible
instrument....very easy to learn, with
just a smalll amount of practice. There
are an incredible number of songs you
can play with very simple chords.
We do not use sheet music. Our songs
are sent to us via computer, so that we
can practice as much as we want at
home. Our sessions start with songs
that have simple chords, and the last
45 minutes we venture into songs that
are a bit harder (but do become easier
with practice).

membership, and a $2.00 drop-in fee.

Happy New Year to All! We certainly
had a busy 2015, so I think it’s time to
make some changes.
1.When stressed – knit (it’s called
occupational therapy)
2.Only use yarn you like, if not you’ll
have a “lasting” fi ght for Supremacy.
3.Don’t knit black yarn at night it’ll
only prove your eyesight isn’t 21 years
old anymore.
4.Don’t take your grandchildren to a
yarn shop they’ll talk you into making
them a sweater. They have no concept
of price, quality or TIME.
5.Can’t sleep? Go through your stash,
you’ve seen it 100 times it should
come to a 500 sheep count!
6.Got a good pattern? It’s always
good to share, bring it on in.
7.It is really true that she who dies with
the most yarn wins? Wins what I’d like
to know.
8.Remember! In, around, thru and off .

The iPad Club is a peer-led group
which is open to all iPad and iPhone
owners (all tablets are not iPads, if
yours doesn’t have an apple on the
back, it’s not an iPad).
On the fi rst Tuesday of the month we
focus on new users and encourage
those who need a bit of help with
the basics to come. We hope that
many of the more experienced users
will also come to help and share their
knowledge.
On the third Tuesday we switch to
slightly more ‘advanced’ techniques,
but all are welcome. If ‘new’ users
attend (and you are most welcome)
please remember that we don’t review
basics at these meetings.
Remember, our new home is in the
dining room at the Native Sons’ Hall.
You can enter from the upper parking
lot (the one that is on the upper level of
the Filberg Centre, not the one beside
the Native Sons).

Our December meeting saw members
helping members with computer
issues and, I believe, successfully.
Carole is checking for a speaker for
January, however, wasn’t able to
‘pin down’ the speaker at this time.
Members were asked for information
regarding use of their computer.
A large number use it for the same
purpose i.e. Google, News, e-mail.
However, some interesting uses that
others have either not tried or not
aware of were mentioned and possibly
a subject for further investigation.
We concluded the meeting with
coff ee/tea and goodies supplied
by members. A very good meeting!
Thank you for your participation.
Again, please stay safe—fraud artists
are out there and their devious
methods make it worthwhile—for
them. They have access to personal
information so you could easily be
mislead to believe it’s someone who
knows you or has your interest at heart.
New members are always welcome.
You require a current (2016) Evergreen

for the enjoyment and sustainment of the generations to follow. Please don’t toss those
two dead fl ashlight or TV remote batteries into the kitchen garbage because they are little

will be surprised at how quickly they multiply. Now all you have to do is bring those you have collected to the Offi ce where

21 members. When I walked in one
morning to see some of the projects,
I was stunned by the beauty of them
and became a member. For those
who have embroidered most of their
life, what is the diff erence? Brazilian
Embroidery applies stitches from the
whole palette of stitches and knots
you already know, except you lay layer
upon layer, creating a dimensional
picture and you only use rayon thread.
Introduced in the 1800’s, Rayon was
the fi rst man-made fi ber and Brazil was
the fi rst country to use it extensively,
hence the name. Stitching for
three hours comes with sharing of
knowledge, helping each other and
many stories and jokes in good humor.
Supplies and starter kits are available.
Last Thursday, the club went to a local
restaurant to celebrate the season.
If you are interested in joining, you
will need a membership with the
Evergreen Club. We meet on Thursday
mornings from 9:00 am – 12:00 pm in
the craft room and the cost is .50cents
for each session.

The Book Club met as usual on
December 7th, 1st Monday of the
month in the Soroptimist Room
upstairs in the Centre.
Next meeting will be January
4th,2016. Why not start the New Year
sharing the books you have read over
the Holidays.
Everyone is welcome. I have just
fi nished John Irving’s new book,
Avenue of Mysteries. The book has
received rave reviews. Considering his
other books, Hotel New Hampshire,
Cider House Rules, to mention a few,
one would expect the same quality in
this book.
I enjoyed the characters and the
writing, but to me the book does not
come close to his other earlier ones.

I hope everyone had a Merry
Christmas. The quilters had a bit of
a hiatus in December, due to some
members being ill or away. We still
have two quilts on frames, and we are
always looking for people who have
quilts they would like to have quilted.

VOLUNTEERSA Message from Deanne, your Volunteer Coordinator
VOLUNTEER
OF THE MONTHHappy 2016 everyone! Why not
self refl ect on how much time you
spend volunteering? We have some
of the most amazing Volunteers
that consistently step up and give
of themselves. We don’t want that
amazing 10% doing 90% of the
volunteering and burning out. If you
can fi nd a little time to give back to the
Evergreen Club, the benefi t of giving
will come back to you many times
over! Here’s a quote to leave you with:
“Volunteering is the ultimate exercise
In democracy. You vote in elections
once a year but when you volunteer,
you vote everyday about the kind of
community you want to live in.”

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
PM SHIFT FOOD SERVICE HOSTESS/HOSTS This is a good place to meet new people and work as part of a dynamic team. One aft ernoon per month or more! 1:00pm
- 3:30pm you will be scheduled to serve customers, do kitchen duties and begin the shut down process. It would involve
staying past 3:30 in order to follow the full shut down procedures list. Food Safe is preferred but not mandatory - training is
provided! This is a nice time for an easy pace in the kitchen. The lunch time rush is over and you have a quieter ‘coff ee and
treat ‘kind of a crowd. You always work with a partner.
MUFFIN HEROGreat for morning people! Prepare coff ee, make muffi ns and prep for the day. Our Muffi n Hero volunteers must have the
ability to work with little supervision. Shift can be fl exible (normally one full week every 5 weeks) but can be a few days a
week if necessary. Typically 7:00am - 10:00 am Monday - Friday. Volunteers can be any age and don’t have to be members
of the Club. Come join us with a partner (scheduling works best with a buddy). Of course, if you don’t have a partner we will
do our best to match you up. Food Safe preferred but not mandatory - training is provided!
Call Deanne 250-338-1000 ext 232 or email [email protected] if you are interested in hearing more about these
opportunities.
OPPOSITES ATTRACT!Neil and Jeanette are two special people who contribute their time and energies
to the Evergreen Club. Neil’s the soft spoken ‘sporty’ one and Jeanette’s the
extroverted ‘musical’ one. Both are well deserving of being our fi rst Volunteer of
the Month duo for 2016.
Neil’s involved in many of the sports off ered at the EG like fl oor curling, golf, and
carpet bowling. He is one of those key guys that steps up and knows the success
of a club relies on giving back to it. He is the registrar and treasurer of the golf
club and is fully involved in all aspects of carpet bowling (score keeping, tourneys
etc...). He sets the standard very high with his integrity and leads by example
to newer members. Neil is also a provincially accredited referee. Fellow carpet
bowler, Wally Lamond says, “He’s such a joy. One of those guys that quietly gets
it done behind the scenes.”
Jeanette is the Gospel Sing-Along group’s director. Her duties include song
selections and communications (Neil works the projector). Gospel’s Marnie
Dean says, “She’s so fun to work with and picks good songs!” Jeanette creates an
inviting group where people are encouraged to come and listen even if they don’t
want to sing. She wants people to know this group is not about performance.
She wants people to come sing simply because they can… or hum or whistle! The
duo’s other volunteering includes helping at The Sid, Salvation Army Kettle Drive,
and being active with the Comox Community Baptist Church. The Harrison’s
philosophy in life sums up nicely with the word ‘Connection.’ They feel you can
never be bored or lonely if you connect but stress you do have to make the eff ort.
Congrats!
