23RD ANNUAL SURREY RCMP BASKETBALL CLASSIC 2014

2013 BC’s #2 ranked White Rock Christian Warriors avenged a loss in last year’s fi nal by taming BC’s #5 ranked Tamanawis Wildcats, (89-70) in the championship game of the 2013 RCMP Basketball Classic. It was the 11th championship for the Warriors and fi rst in 3 years. Both teams went on the attack early trading the lead 11 times in the opening quarter which ended with the Wildcats leading 22-21. Midway through the second quarter the game changed when the Warriors went on a 12-4 run to take a 51-39 half time lead and never looked back. Tyus Allen, who led the Warriors with 32 points and numerous assists,

was named the MVP. Top rebounder Vartan Tanielian added 23 points. White Rock advanced with convincing victories over Fraser Heights (78-54), Southridge (80-54) and Enver Creek Cougars (70-50). Tamanawis, led by all-stars Sukhjot Bains and Parmvir Bains, advanced on the other side of the pool with victories over Sullivan Heights (91-43), Elgin Park (84-58) and Lord Tweedsmuir (74-59). Enver Creek behind Gurkirat Kular’s 21 points defeated Lord Tweedsmuir to capture 3rd place. Fraser Heights fi nished in the top 5 for the fi rst time in the tournament’s 22 year history capturing 4th place.

2012 KING OF THE COURTS! Second time was lucky for the Tamanawis Wildcats. The Cats battled through 8 different lead changes before capturing their fi rst ever RCMP Classic Championship with a thrilling 68-66 overtime victory over the White Rock Christian Warriors. Manny Dulay, named tournament MVP, led the offense with 25 points. The game was tied at 61-61 after regulation. In overtime, Shivi Viria hit a huge 3 with 90 seconds left to put the Wildcats up by one. The Warriors were unable to respond. White Rock, was led by fi rst team all stars, Tyus Allen (23 points) and Jake Newman (20 points). Enver Creek Cougars, led by all star, Rajan Rai, captured 3rd place with a convincing 71-57 victory over Southridge Storm (5th). Princess Margaret took 4th place.

2011 The fi nal of the 20th edition of the Surrey RCMP Classic was the closest and most exciting in tournament history. Two of BC’s best teams, the ENVER CREEK Cougars and the TAMANAWIS Wildcats battled it out before a capacity crowd. The tough defensive contest was in doubt most of the night with the teams taking turns sharing the lead that was never greater than 4 points until the fi nal minute when the Cougars went up by 7 to close out their second championship with a 55-51 victory. Enver Creek was led by tournament MVP Parvez Jhaj (17 points, 12 rebounds) , fi rst all star Vikash Pillai (14 pts) and Marc Mincieli (11 pts). Tamanawis was led by all stars Gagan Sahota (16 pts), Sehaj Thind (13pts) and Manny Dulay (12pts). Enver advanced to the fi nals with victories over Fraser Heights, Southridge and Fleetwood Park while Tamanawis advanced with victories over Guildford Park, Princess Margaret and Clayton Heights.

2010 White Rock Christian Warriors captured their 10th title with a convincing 70-48 victory over Fleetwood Park. Fleetwood trailed by only 8 at the half but lost the

services of their all star Nick Del Bianco who was forced out of the game with an injury. Eli Mara and tournament MVP Riley Barker opened up the game in the second half to seal the victory. Clayton captured third place with a victory over Tamanawanis and Enver Creek finished 4th.

2009 The “Classic” was highlighted by the play of the White Rock Christian Warriors. Although the tournament had many exciting games no one was able to match the hard work and size of the Warriors. MVP Riley Barker proved to be too much for the Fleetwood Dragons in the championship game. The Dragons battled through a series of tough opponents to get to the finals. Southridge, impressive throughout, claimed 3rd place and were led by the tournament’s most inspirational player Jorden Yee.

2008 The White Rock Christian Warriors recaptured the championship banner with a convincing 91-53 victory over the Princess Margaret Lions. The semi finals proved to be the most exciting games with WR Christian edging out a determined Kwantlen Park Timberwolves team 68-60 while Princess Margaret upset Tamanawis 71-68. Spencer McLean led White Rock Christian in the final scoring 28 points and was named the tournament MVP.

2007 The 2007 RCMP Classic witnessed an improbable comeback in the championship final. Trailing by 11 points and entering the 4th quarter, the Elgin Park Orcas seized control and went on to finish with a stunning come-from-behind 76-69 victory over the foul plagued White Rock Christian Warriors. This was Elgin Park’s first RCMP title. Dakota Russell was named the tournament MVP. The Kwantlen Park Timber Wolves ended up in third place for their highest-ever finish.

2006 The 15th edition of the RCMP Classic will go down as one of the most competitive ever. The semi finals were both nailbiters with White Rock edging out Enver Creek by a single point while Fleetwood needed overtime to get past Elgin Park. Unfortunately for Enver Creek they lost the services for the season of their top rebounder and top defensive player in the White Rock game but went on to capture third place with a convincing 72-54 victory. Fleetwood battled, in spite of serious foul trouble, but in the end they were unable to topple the Warriors. White Rock’s Matt Wirch demonstrated some late heroics to finish the Dragons, 66-60. Ravi Athwal was named tournament MVP.

2005 The White Rock Christian Warriors regained the title of champions with a convincing 87-58 victory over Enver Creek Cougars. Tyrell Mara averaged 36 points per game and was named the Classic’s MVP. White Rock Christian went on to be crowned the BC Provincial Champions in March. The Cougars cruised to the finals with victories over Kwantlen Park, Earl Marriott, and Fleetwood Park. They were led by the outstanding play of all star, Darren Deol.

2004 The 2004 Classic resulted in the emergence of a new champion, the Enver Creek Cougars. Tournament MVP Dalbir Dosanjh erupted for 13 points in the fourth quarter to boost the Cougars to a 64-55 victory over Elgin Park Orcas in the championship game. Elgin Park advanced to the finals with an impressive 54-51 victory over the White Rock Christian Warriors. The tournament’s most exciting game featured an overtime victory by Enver Creek over Princess Margaret, 111-102, with Dalbir Dosanjh setting a tournament scoring record with 56 points.

2003 The 2003 tournament featured some of the most exciting final rounds in the events

history. Six of the final seven games were decided by 4 points or less with two going into overtime. The finale, watched by over 800 fans, evolved into a defensive showcase as the White Rock Christian Warriors defeated Enver Creek Cougars, 57-53. The victory gave the Warriors their fifth straight title. In the semi-finals, White Rock needed overtime in a controversial finish to slip past Fleetwood Park, 69-66 while Enver Creek qualified with a narrow 76-73 win over the Elgin Park Orcas.

2002 The White Rock Christian Warriors knocked off the upstart Fraser Valley Christian Falcons 76-55 to capture their fourth successive RCMP tournament crown. Donald Burton led the Warriors and was named the tourney MVP. Jordan Craig (47 points in the semi finals) and Sean Stewart were named to the All Star team. The Falcons had earlier stunned the Enver Creek Cougars with an upset overtime win, 92-81. David Bron and Kyle Kooger led the Falcons.

2001 The streak continues! A well distributed scoring attack headed by BC’s most talented player and the tournament’s repeat MVP Kyle Wilson helped lead David Craig’s White Rock Christian Warriors to their 3rd straight championship over Fleetwood Park, who were sparked by the play of the tournament’s “most inspirational player”, Kamil Rylek.

2000 The White Rock Christian Warriors won their second consecutive title with a convincing 103-51 victory over Semiahmoo. The tournament’s MVP, Kyle Wilson led the attack and was aided by first team All Star Zack Hogan and second team All Star Sean Stewart.

WINNER’S CIRCLE TROPHIESALL-STAR CLASSIC

Friday, April 4, 2014at Enver Creek Secondary

is officially commended for his exemplary voluntary activities, the results of which have had a beneficial impact on the youth of the City of Surrey.

In 1990, Mr. Inrig, a basketball coach with the Surrey School District, and Corporal Normand Massie, a member of the Surrey RCMP Detachment, established the Surrey RCMP Basketball Classic. The intention was to promote a positive relationship between police officers and the students, foster good sportsmanship, address existing inter-school rivalries and, generally, improve the lives of all involved. Over the years, the tournament has grown from the initial participation of eight Surrey high schools to now include twenty-four private and public schools. Funding from various sources provides annual scholarships for those students who meet the criteria. Mr. Inrig and Corporal Massie, no longer with Surrey Detachment, continue to selflessly dedicate their time each year to the tournament, ensuring its outstanding success.Mr. Inrig, through his exceptional volunteer activities, not only provides the youth of his community with a positive role model but also promotes one of the national priorities for the RCMP, the youth of the country. His strong work ethic and dedication bring credit to himself and are in keeping with the highest standards of a Canadian citizen.
