December 2012

A Scholarship Fund has been established in memory of Eileen Burchby Lambert Stegmaier. Mrs. Stegmaier, as Mrs. Lambert, was a devoted teacher at Queen of All Saints School for many years. It was her wish to assist individual needy students who are attending Queen of All Saints School. The Eileen Burchby Lambert Stegmaier Scholarship will be open to all seventh grade students , and will provide a full tuition scholarship for eighth grade. The criteria for awarding this scholarship will be based on financial need, Catholic values, and academic excellence. A committee of school administrators and clergy will review the criteria and select the awardee. The recipient of the scholarship will be announced in Spring. If you wish to nominate your seventh grade student attending QAS for this scholarship, please contact the school office for an application form. Applications must be submitted to the QAS School Office on or before April 1, 2013.

Sincerely,

Peter A. Tantillo

Religious Education News Re Classes All sessions meet this week at regularly scheduled times. The families of 5th graders are invited to attend a class explaining the Mass at 4 PM on Saturday, January 12th in the school cafeteria. After the class, we will attend the 5 PM Mass to see what was learned in the class session in practice. For the month of January, we will be exploring the Work of Mercy (i.e. Bearing Wrongs Patiently). It will be an exercise in an anti-bullying campaign. Students are asked to do random acts of kindness, and write them on a dove to be posted in a public place for you to see. It is hoped that by doing this the students will learn that even they can change the life of someone, and make this a better place for us all. RE Reminders Parents of this year’s Confirmation candidates are asked to attend an important meeting on Wednesday, January 23rd. Information on the coming retreat will be the main topic of this meeting. You are reminded that all paper work must be in the Religious Education Office before this meeting. Only those who have all forms completed will be considered for seating at the Confirmation liturgy. All late candidates will receive their seat assignment as their paper work is completed.

Everyone is invited to join us for our 3rd Annual Valentine’s Day Holiday Outing. This year we will be having a delightfully romantic gathering at noon on Friday, February 8, 2013 at

Lutnia Restaurant 5532 W Belmont (about 1/2 block east of Central), Chicago (Parking is 1/2 block south of Belmont on Central)

Mark your calendar and plan to experience the way the Over 50 Club does up a Valentine’s Day Party. The cost of the event is $25. Please make out your check to Over 50 Club and send it to Donna Lee Wilson at 5568 W Ardmore, Chicago, IL, 60646 by the beginning of February. Questions, call Donna Lee at 773-792-2070.

During this time it is important to remember common sense: Sign of Peace - If one is ill with the cold or flu, or if one feels the need, another gesture is perfectly acceptable. For example, a nod of the head and a smile could

accompany the verbal sharing of Christ’s peace. Holy Communion from the Cup - Communicants should always act responsibly. If one is ill, he or she should refrain from taking holy Communion from the Cup.

Two side chapels form the transept and give the Basilica its cruciform outline. On the left side, or the Gospel side of the nave, the chapel is dedicated to the honor of the Sacred Heart; it is balanced on the right, or Epistle side, by a symmetrical chapel dedicated to St. Joseph. Actually, if you will observe the framework of the building, you will notice that the first two bays appear wider than the others, for they open on either side to give access to these chapels. The tall, gray limestone piers form the dividing line separating each chapel from the nave. Separated, yet not disunited, they form one integrated whole. The oak paneling along the side aisles follows the exterior walls and becomes the wood wainscoting, discharging warmth and subdued coloration to the rear and outer wall of the chapel. The marble altar--or communion--railing, one a slightly recessed plane, conformable with the size of the chapel, is nevertheless, joined with the railing of the nave, and made of the same imported Spanish marble, with a continuation of the pattern of metal art-work in each open panel. If you should stand in the side aisle, almost in front of the Confessionals, just outside the side chapels, and lift your eyes to see the ceiling, you will once more be introduced into the grandeur of Gothic--the enormous height of the ceiling compared with the horizontal dimensions of the chapels, the convergence of the trusses, the soaring, graceful lines of lancet arches, crossing each other in perspective, the emphasis upon delicate motion upward.
