It says in the Pirkei Avot, the Words of the Sages, that the world continues to exist because of three things. These are: Torah, Worship, and Deeds of Loving Kindness/Gemilut Hasidim (Simon the Just, chapter 1, paragraph 2).

Why these three? It is because each one is the foundation of the next. As we study Torah, we learn what deeds (mitzvot) we need to take on in our lives to be of benefit to ourselves, our families, our friends, our community and our world. As we develop a spiritual/

prayer life we build a relationship with God to sustain us in the fulfillment of these mitzvot. And finally, once we have learned the mitzvot to do, and then have the spiritual guidance and support to fulfill them, we can finally go out and do them; thus the deeds of Loving Kindness.

There are, of course, many of these deeds to fulfill in our lives. They prove to be the most important of all that we can do as they include: praying for others, visiting the sick, caring for the elderly, preparing the dead for burial, attending the funeral service, comforting mourners, attending to bride and groom.

As many of you are aware, the past few months have witnessed a number of deaths within our congregational families. I have called upon quite a few of you to help bring Shiva food to a family and conduct Shiva services in the home. It seemed at times, however, that I was calling on the same persons to fulfill these mitzvot of Loving Kindness, or not finding anyone at all.

With over 500 households within our B'nai Israel family, there are numerous times during each month when there is a need to meet the needs of our Temple community in the ways stated above. I am only one person and again, and I thank each of them, there have only been a few people to call upon when needed.

I, therefore, am putting out a call, as I have done before, for YOU to become a participant in our Gemilut Hasidim Committee.

What responsibilities are available for you to fulfill:

saying prayers for the ill from your own home (I would give you the names and the prayers to be recited)

visiting those who are ill and would like a visit at home or in the hospital from a Temple member

purchasing and delivering Shiva food (which is reimbursed by the Temple)

conducting Shiva services (I would show you how)

It’s Tu Bish’vat The “New Year of Trees” or Jewish Arbor Day!

From the URJ website: The holiday is observed on the fifteenth (tu) of Sh'vat. Scholars believe that Tu BiSh'vat was originally an agricultural festival, marking the emergence of spring. After the destruction of the Temple in 70 A.C.E. this holiday was a way for Jews to symbolically bind themselves to their former homeland by eating foods that could be found in Israel. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century Kabbalists created a ritual for Tu BiSh'vat similar to the Passover seder. Today, Tu BiSh'vat has also become a tree planting festival in Israel, in which both Israelis and Jews around the world plant trees in honor or in memory of a loved one or friend. To plant a tree in honor or in memory of a friend or loved one, please contact The JNF Online Tree Planting Center. www.jnf.org Other online resources for Tu Bish’vat http://urj.org/holidays/tubishvat/ http://urj.org/learning/forparents/holidayhappenings/ http://www.nfty.org/resources/holidays/tubishvat/

President’s Message                                         Joel Silverman

I have a confession to make. On the first night of Chanukah I made a conscious decision NOT to attend any of our three menorah lightings. Although I usually show up at the Oakdale train station for this annual event, this year I opted out. I had already put in a full day on my feet, was hungry and tired. And the weather was cold, windy and wet. But when I got a call that we may be short bingo volunteers for that very same evening, I skipped supper entirely and was off to the Bingo Hall in a flash.

Only afterward did I begin to question my thought process and the wisdom of those decisions. Why did a public menorah lighting take a back seat to bingo? Sure, bingo is a major source of income for the Temple and I told myself that I was trading one Temple “obligation” for another. But now I’m having serious second thoughts about my priorities that evening. Why wasn’t a good showing in the community at least as important as bingo? Why didn’t my personal celebration of Chanukah come first? I have no good answers, but I have a year to think about it and, planning ahead, I expect to be at the Oakdale train station on the first night of Chanukah next year.

In the larger sense, why do tree lightings, so common this time of year, draw crowds? Although Rabbi Moss appeared “content” with our sparse turnout, “about the same as other years” he told me, where were all the rest of us on the evening of the first night? I urge you to think about that, as I have. And rather than wait a year, consider your options this Friday night and every Friday night. What will you be doing during our Shabbat

service? I hope to see you there.

On another note, Friday evening, January 21, members of the Suffolk County’s Jewish War Veterans will be joining us for Shabbat services. They will be available both before and after services to speak with any of us who qualify for membership in their organization. If you or someone you know may be interested, please join us that evening – no cost; no obligation. Perhaps a small group of B’nai Israel veterans can become involved together in this worthwhile service organization.

To keep everyone current, as of this writing, B’nai Israel has entered into a tentative rental agreement with Weight Watchers to provide a venue for as many as three meetings each week on our premises. These sessions are intended to be open to the public but our members will always be welcome to join as they would at any other meeting location. While we have never tried something on this scale before, it affords an opportunity to earn a much needed source of “outside” income to

supplement dues, donations and fund raising. There may be a n e e d f o r a T e m p l e volunteer or two to help coord ina te w i th We igh t Watchers on an ongoing basis. If you can help out, please let me know.

Have a happy and healthy New Year.

Joel

With a New Year upon us we have been given the opportunity to rekindle our resolve to be better people and live better lives. The New Year brings so many people hope and promise for change and renewal. Unfortunately, there are still those who will be without the necessities of food, shelter or clothing that every human being needs to survive. Jewish tradition teaches us to be charitable, sharing what blessings we have with others even when we are having difficult times of our own. I always find that when I feel as though my days are filled with struggle, if I give something to someone else, whether it be a monetary donation, a shoulder to lean on or just a simple smile, I am blessed in return. Charitable donations of food are always welcome to those who are hungry. Giving to charity is a ritual that can bring so much joy into your heart and be greatly appreciated by those in need. With this in mind, the Ritual Committee invites you to help us, in conjunction with the Outreach Committee, to begin a monthly Family Service Food Drive. The second Friday of each month is our Family service at 7:15pm. The act of coming together as a family to celebrate Shabbat is a mitzvah. Let us share the warmth and love we have for each other with those in

need. We are asking that each family bring one canned or nonperishable item each month as they come to the family service to help support the local food pantry. A box will be located in the sanctuary lobby for the donations. I pray that our New Year’s resolve to help those in need be blessed and may those in need find the strength to overcome their hardships. Thank you in advance for your support! Rain or shine, windy or calm, Temple members can always be counted on to be sure our Menorah at the Oakdale Train Station is ready for Chanukah. This year our Chanukah Helpers were Jacob Jones, Tyrone Jones, Barry Wilans, Brian Linehan, Mike Lambert and Joel Brand. A special thanks to Barry for always being on hand to make repairs, Mike (and Alice!) for storing the Menorah year round, and the rest of the crew for their time and devotion!

The Center, located on the second floor of the Suffolk Community College-Selden Campus Library, offers many programs throughout the year on the Holocaust and related areas of bias and prejudice.

Why not get on the email list and be notified of future programs? If you wish to do so, please let the Rabbi know, or you can go to www.CHDHU.org.

Center for the Holocaust, Diversity, and Human Understanding

We just had our second meeting of this new group at our Temple. We had latkes and discussed future plans and possibilities for this group of friends.

All members who can attend during the day are welcome. We will be meeting the second Wednesday of each month and are hoping to have diverse programs to meet everyone's needs.

Our next meeting is on January 12, 2011 at 1 PM. We invite you to attend for a nosh and be willing to share a memory or interesting story from your past. Prepare a few words (no more than one page) or just talk for a few minutes. Maybe you can share about your hometown, an interesting person, food, family stories, or just about anything that gave you pleasure or maybe caused some difficulty.

On February 9, 2011 at 1 PM we invite you to join us for a talk with a guest speaker.

THROUGH THE PRESIDENTS’ KEYHOLE: Trivia, gossip, and little-known stories of the Presidents and their families

Do you know which President was a hangman? Who was taught to read by his wife?

Which President won a spelling bee at age ten? Who invented the lazy Susan? Learn these stories and many more. Hear the anecdotes that are happy, sad, poignant, or coincidental. These are the stories that do not appear in most history books. Come to the February 9 meeting of the Friendship Group and hear the answers to these questions during a presentation by an historian.

Rabbi Moss sits on the Commentary Committee of the Central Conference of American Rabbis for the Reform movement's new High Holy Day Prayer Book. This book will not be available for at least four years and certainly no decision has been made as to whether or not our Temple will, at some time in the future, use this book or not. Since our Rabbi is on this national committee, he thought it would be interesting for us to become one of the pilot congregations to receive the drafts of this new book as they become available. The draft will not be shared with the entire congregation. Those of you on the committee will, therefore, be able to give input into this book which will shape the future of Reform Judaism. A first draft of the morning Rosh Hashanah service will probably become available in February.

The Rabbi is looking for congregants who would be interested in being part of a study group which will experience and evaluate this service. Please let him know if you are interested.

f|áàxÜ{ÉÉw axãáÄxààxÜ Message from the presidents...

HAPPY 2011…..We hope that you had a wonderful Holiday Season. We look forward to our 2011 programming. Relax, release the stress from the past and enjoy a night out with the girls. January is a special month for Sisterhood because we get a chance to host our Rabbi as our guest speaker. So join us on January 18th for this special meeting. Topic: The Status of Jews on Long Island, An open conversation with our Rabbi.

In addition we will be having a special event in Military Bridge. There is nothing military about it…..just plain fun. No knowledge of Bridge is necessary. For all the long cold nights of winter we still meet to enjoy the warmth of friendship. Phyllis and Rita

f|áàxÜ{ÉÉw fÑÉÇáÉÜá `|àéät{ cÜÉ}xvà Stuff-an-Animal was a huge success for the second year in a row!

Sisterhood is proud to announce that we had a great turnout for this wonderful Mitzvah project! Thanks to Sheila Kessler and Eddie Jacobs EJ the DJ for donating the animal furs and adorable outfits for all the children and many adults to stuff and dress. These precious furry friends will be donated to children in need of comfort and love during this holiday season to the Stony Brook Hospital Pediatrics and a Homeless Shelter in Patchogue. We’d like to thank the Junior and Senior Youth groups for spreading the word and participating in this worthwhile cause.

Mazel Tov to the great young people who joined us for this Mitzvah. These children and grandchildren of our sisterhood members worked hard to make this Mitzvah dream a reality. It was truly a labor of love, and a great time was had by all. Donations  We Need Your Help! Your Temple’s income from dues has fallen during the past year, leaving B’nai Israel more dependent on donations than ever. Please consider making a donation at this time. While your donation may be made to honor a special person, remember that it also helps to provide good works for a larger community.

Donations of $1000 or larger will be commemorated on an attractive new arrangement of plaques to be placed in the Temple lobby. Large donations may also be made in installments.

How to Donate: You can bring or mail a check identifying the intended fund to the Temple. You can also arrange to provide larger donations in installments. Please contact the Temple office if you have any questions. (631) 563-1660 or email [email protected]

My Own Endowment Fund?  The Temple welcomes larger donations that establish endowment funds in accordance with donor wishes. An endowment provides the Temple with long-term benefits that you specify. Endowments are publicized and often grow by attracting additional donations from others. You may name your endowment fund in honor or in memory of someone special. Please call the Temple Office at 563-1660 for further information.
