Happy New Year, THRIVE readers! I want to propose a challenge. Consider making one…and one only…new year’s resolution. But it has to be a resolution that you have never made before. And it be can be the most simple thing, too. For example, if you have never made the “get healthy” resolution, then go for it! This is your year! But for people like me…who make that resolution every Monday throughout the entire year…it’s just not going to work. It’s time to cut the cord and make another, more feasible resolution. For instance, I really need to work on my road rage. Yes…this is a huge problem for me considering I know, for a fact, that I am a WAY better driver than most. Another resolution that I could consider is my OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) with color/garment coding closets and alphabetizing my cleaning supplies. But this is not as bad as my issues with all the food labels having to face the same direction. Yah…I probably need to work on that, too! Make a change people! Please email me your ONE, and only ONE new year’s resolution to [email protected]. The most interesting submission will be mentioned in my letter next month!

Paco's Sol Bistro welcomed LHP back to their stage for the band's first official 4-hour show at Paco's, which is proving to be a great place for the all-acoustic band. The December 9th show was lengthy enough to get in all the favorites plus some new jams.

The 1980's local band Borderline graced the Lincoln Square Theatre on December 9th for the "Save the Lincoln Concert" along with the headline Eagles tribute band Heartache Tonight.

You can't find the perfect Christmas Tree without an expert Christmas Tree spotter. Thrive contributor Todd Hauser shared these photos of his tree hunter, James, out at Greentree Christmas Tree Farm. They found their family tree, got it baled up and loaded it atop their SUV. All before there was even a flurry of snow stuck to the ground. I consider this a success!

Stars weren’t only atop trees in Decatur this December. When Hollywood actor Ben Affleck popped into Bizou for a quick business meeting with philanthropist Howard G. Buffett, the city took notice. With stars in their eyes, two Avon Theater employees, Ashlyn Kline (left) and Megan Markwell, stopped in for their own meet and greet.Ben Affleck photos courtesy of: Ashtyn Kline

The Audience at the Avon Theater got a spectacular show from Chicago based swing band The Flat Cats, December 16th for free! Audience energy was high with snapping, clapping and singing as the band sang classic jazz Carols, and even some non-seasonal works, too. SPOTLIGHT08Flying Tomato Goodness

Get ThereGarcia’s Pizza in a Pan1099 W. Main St.424-1800Delivery, carry out or dine in (BYOB welcome)Weekdays 11a-9pWeekends 11a-10p

What do you get when you take a classic and give it a twist? Pure flying tomato goodness. I give you Garcia’s Pizza in a Pan—with a FREE arcade!

Taking Ralph and Joe’s formula up a notch, owner Johnathan Fick has put pizza and games in the ideal spot: the Oakwood neighborhood, just east of Millikin.

For Johnathan, it is a dream come true. “When I was a kid growing up I’d always go to the Garcia’s in the mall next to the arcade Replay,” he explains. “I had to make the choice between two slices—what I really wanted—and one slice plus games at the arcade. I vowed when I opened my Garcia’s that no one else would have to make that terrible choice.”

A gamer from way back, Johnathan shares equally his customers’ passion for pizza and video games. Owner of over 300 classic arcade games himself, this aficionado set about sharing the wealth with his customers.

After an initial stint at a Water Street location, Johnathan opened the Millikin location three years ago, chock full of spicy tomato-y goodness and about 30 arcade games.

“We started out giving customers free tokens for the games,” he says. “Now most are set on free or open play.”

The most popular? Like the famous Gutbuster pizza slice, it’s easy to say. The Class of ’82

combination Ms. Pac Man and Galaga games get the most play of any unit in the restaurant. A distant second: Super Mario World, with primo positioning at the center booth.

Beyond the arcade ambiance, Johnathan’s also going old school with the pizza making. Taking it back to Ralph and Joe’s roots, he makes his dough fresh in house daily (most locations now receive par-baked dough from Flying Tomato headquarters). “It makes a real difference,” says Johnathan.

A difference that comes in every corner of his pizza parlor, from fresh dough to “fresh” games and the latest development: pizza and game parties in a private room with three game units, a 42-inch flat screen TV and seating for 30.

This is pizza and partying the way it used to be. “A lot of people remember it from growing up,” says Johnathan. “That’s really what it is about.”

I also have to mention the 'connection' you will receive every time from the aptly-named Coffee Connection. Not only are they a delight at the window, but they are committed to making your drink exactly how you like it, even asking you to taste your treat before leaving to be sure it was made to perfection. And don't worry about your pocket book on this one. With espresso drinks starting at $1.50 and an unbeatable location on Main/Water Street, right by DMH, there is no reason not to make Coffee Connection your daily destination for breakfast, lunch and, of course, caffeine!

We will be making our stop at the Coffee Connection a regular occurrence, especially this spring when we can take their patio area for a test drive. We all left full, satisfied and very highly caffeinated, so undoubtedly mission accomplished.

If you're interested in making a game plan before pulling up to the drive-through window for the first time, check out www.decaturcoffeeconnection.com for a full menu, prices, and some featured suggestions.

THE FOOD DUDE10

‘Tis the season for curling up by a fire with a delicious, hot cup of 'Joe' in your favorite holiday flavor: peppermint, pumpkin spice, eggnog, gingerbread, etc. WAIT A MINUTE! Holiday shopping, gift wrapping, work, 100 holiday parties and traveling to do this time of year…who has time to 'curl up' anywhere, let alone whip up a cup of anything more than instant cocoa.

If you are an average Joe like me and looking for a cup of coffee that doesn't require barista training just to order (venti, half-caf, low-cal, double mocha-choca latte ya-ya), then you can't go wrong grabbing your next cup from Decatur's own Coffee Connection. After stopping in once, for what can only be described as the best chai tea latte in town, I had to take a few friends back to help me sample the full spread.

And sample we did. With a selection of hot, iced and blended coffee/tea beverages, delicious and unique baked treats and hand-made lunch wraps, there was something for everyone. Some of the stand-out champions in our meal included the mouth-watering, homemade cinnamon rolls and orange-honey mini-donuts. Plus, if you want a tasty-twist on an old favorite for lunch, you have to try their chipotle BLT wrap, which has all your classic favorites plus a little punch of chipotle flavor.

I was also pleasantly surprised to find a unique seasonal flavor found rarely: caramel apple cider, which even comes in a blended variety, which can be described as nothing short of 'cinnamon slushy goodness!'

Handicaps are established by playing scored matches between two players that track innings like a baseball game. It usually takes a few matches to get a true indication of a player’s level, but it becomes evident as the session rolls along. The handicaps vary from 2 (the lowest) to 7 in eight ball and 2 through 9 in nine ball. Handicaps of 2 or 3 typically take six or seven turns a game to clear a table while 6s and 7s take one to three. Teams field five players with a handicap total of 23 or less in a match, and the individual handicaps allow team captains to match players more accurately in each night’s play.

In addition to competing on the tables, players can help one of the county’s great organizations. The league recently has partnered with Big Brothers Big Sisters and has raised nearly $6,000 for them.

Along with the chance for a trip to Vegas, the leagues offer payback in money and prizes on matches won with a fund around $25,000.

TROY HAYES is a former sportswriter at the Herald & Review and currently is a co-host of “The Aric Lee Show,” heard each week day from 3-6p on ESPNDecatur 1050 AM “The Fan” (WDZ). Troy likes riding the 9, three-rail bank shots and 9-ball breaks.

With Las Vegas in their daydreams, pool players all through Central Illinois rack it up on the tables hoping to be one of 10 teams earning a trip to the desert oasis and a chance at a $25,000 grand prize in a national championship.

It’s not an easy feat for sure, but the opportunity is there for teams that play in the American Poolplayers Association local championships fed by the more than 380 teams from 11 counties in Central Illinois. They play eight ball and nine ball, and they play in junior, senior, open and couples leagues.

“There are a lot of different leagues and a lot of different days and times to play,” said Kim Jones, who has run the Central Illinois APA pool leagues for 23 years now. “Over the years we have expanded the ways in which people can compete.”

The leagues, which play out of 37 Macon County locations, are offered every day of the week with most beginning at 7 p.m. There is a morning league for third shift people at 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays, a senior league on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. and a Jack and Jill league for couples on Friday nights. The new session begins this month, and new teams are encouraged to sign up at their favorite watering hole.

“Anyone can play. You just need a place to play with a pool table,” Jones said. “And of course, patrons who want to shoot pool.”

Established teams are always looking for new players as well, and with the league’s handicap system, all skill levels can compete on a relatively level playing field.

QUESTION:What work would you do, if you didn't have to work? Don't think about money; don't worry about training or ability. When it comes to an occupation to occupy your time; what's the title to your Dream job?

We lurked around Decatur and asked five people this question, then jumbled their answers together. Try to match each person with their dream job. They weren't allowed to say 'my current job,' just to placate their boss/clients. FYI, if you think you are their boss/client, they said 'my current job' first.

Come to the Cabaret

For theof itLove

Your table’s waiting at For the Love of It Cabaret. The fun-infused event, with performances February 10th and 11th, provides benefits for far more than the two non-profits it honors. Audience and performers alike leave energized from the entertainment, music and good-natured battle for song selection.

words: Joli Hohensteinwatercolor: Katrina Smalley

Page 15: January 2012 THRIVE Entertainment Guide

Continued on p. 16

The format (loosely based on a Chicago comedy improv troupe’s style) lets audience members vote for the next song to be performed. Requiring a good deal of spontaneity from the singers and a great effort for getting noticed by the diners, the resulting show brims with life, love and energy, the very things the organizers set about honoring.

“We wanted something different, not just ‘Come to dinner to listen to us sing,’” says co-organizer Beth Creighton, who lost her mom to pancreatic cancer four years ago opening night this year.

Not long after helping Beth through her mom’s illness, Aaron Largent watched his dad battle through non-Hodkins lymphoma. Already bonded through music, the two friends came together for a show with a purpose. Drawing on the friends who supported them through their ordeals, the two concocted the

Cabaret. Proceeds benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society and the Pancreatic Cancer Network, but even with such a heartwarming connection, the co-organizers focus on keeping the upbeat cabaret feel alive.

“The songs are about romance, dating, friends, family,” says Beth. “We draw attention to the research we’re benefiting in one number, but we keep it lighthearted.”

Hard not to, with songs like "Taylor the Latte Boy", about a Starbucks addict who slips her favorite barista her number, and "The Temp & The Receptionist", the tale of two quintessential office geeks who find romance, among the audience’s choices for entertainment.

In fact the show revolves around the audience’s selections. Oversized numbers 1 through 25 grace the back of the stage, and the show program lists the corresponding songs. The audience shouts out the number they want to hear.

Page 16: January 2012 THRIVE Entertainment Guide

16 | january 2012

To help explain how it works, the team commissioned an original opening song from a student at Millikin, and it took off from there. “People would scream numbers, yell as a table; they came up with really creative ways to get our attention by the end of the night,” says Beth.

Indeed, by the end of the night it’s hard to tell who’s more into it ̶ the audience or the performers. Last year’s troupe included eight singers; all are back and joined by two newcomers as the Cabaret comes out 10 strong in its sophomore revue.

Performers include Beth, Aaron, Keith Creighton (Beth’s husband), Ted Hesse, John Musick, Sue Powell, Dena Sexton and Chelsea Waller, along with the newbies, Michael Holder and Cayla Hittmeier.

By the end of the night, each person will have performed one or two solos, as well as participated in all-girl and all-guy numbers, duets and several all-company pieces.

“The great thing is there’s no story to follow, no through line to keep up with,” says Beth. “And with our theme ‘For the Love of It,’ we have a lot of leeway for material to cover.”

The program for the night starts with dinner at 6, with the show starting immediately after (usually around 7). Their host, The Decatur Club, promises another signature meal. (Last year’s menu featured a delicious culinary exploration with an all-red theme.) They split the songs roughly in half, bookending dessert in the middle.

Page 17: January 2012 THRIVE Entertainment Guide

january 2012 | 17

Like any good cabaret, they keep the party going long after the crumbs have been cleared, with an after party in the Mezzanine Lounge. Audience members are invited to sing their own numbers or request special favorites from the performers.

It’s all in the name of good fun and a great cause. Last year’s event drew about 160 people and raised approximately $1,200 for each charity, and this year they hope to top it.

“We’re not in it for the money—no one in the arts ever is,” says Beth. “We just wanted the chance to sing, and we knew we’d be happier if it went to something important to us.”

Come taste the wine,Come hear the songs.Come blow your horn,Start celebrating;Right this way,Your table's waiting!Come hear the music play.Life is a Cabaret, old chum,Come to the Cabaret!

Guide to essential wine, spirits and cocktail glasses.

words and i l lust rat ionby K at Smal ley

The makeup of your personal glass collection truly just depends on your personal taste. If you want to feel prepared for any situation without the need for an extra pod out back just for your glassware, consider keeping these classic vessels on hand.

Complete sets?I f you don't want to buy huge sets, collect unique one - offs or sets of two. So long as several versions are in use, i t wil l look intentional.

Wine Glass I f you have to choose

just one wine glass, go big. Red wines

need room to stretch out and breathe.

Although it 's better to ser ve white wines in a

smaller glass, they're less affected by the

big glass. Remember to hold the glass

by the stem so you aren' t changing the

temperature of the wine!

Brandy SnifterThe snifter is another unique glass well wor th having on hand. I f you're enjoying brandy or cognac, there's no other glass that wil l collect the aroma at the r im l ike the brandy snifter, and your beverage wil l warm right up with the glass cradled in your palm.

Champaign FluteWhen it 's t ime to celebrate, you don't want to be without the classic f lute. The sl im, tapered shape lets bubbles r ise slowly, keeping your champaign or other carbonated beverage from going f lat.

Page 29: January 2012 THRIVE Entertainment Guide

See all of the January events for the Decatur area on pages 18-26!

Cocktail GlassCommonly known as the mar tini

glass, this wide cone -shaped bowl helps keep ingredients from

separating. This is a must-have glass i f you want to ser ve mar tinis, gimlets

and manhattans. The cocktai l glass can also be used for a wide variety of

mixed drinks.

Shot GlassA.K.A. the "Shooter" It 's the t iniest of cocktai l glasses and is meant for consuming straight l iquors in one swift swig. Why keep shooters around? I f you're drinking something straight and strong l ike whiskey or vodka, it 's best to keep it small and measurable. The average shot glass wil l hold 1.5 ounces.

Highball & LowballBoth the highball and lowball are great choices for ser ving mixed drinks. The larger highball (holding 12-14 oz.) is commonly used for Bloody Mar ys, cranberr y and vodka, or gin and tonic. The smaller lowball (8-10 oz.)works well for a variety of mixed drinks, too, but it 's really the per fect match for a couple of ounces of f ine whiskey or scotch. You wil l often see drinks in these two glasses ser ved on the rocks.

IT'S ALL ABOUT PRESENTATION.Even if you aren't popping a bottle of bubbly, having some simple, elegant glasses on hand can transform nonalcoholic beverages into something to celebrate.

With the smell of smothered waffle fries wafting through the air, a determined, middle-aged woman reaches for her club and steps onto the seventh tee at Pebble Beach to practice her swing. Then, with the wind set low and the ground dry, she launches the techno-specific golf ball within 3 yards of the hole - all the while knowing her velocity, distance, club head speed and landing terrain. “Waitress! Another round! That was a good one!”

McGorray’s Golf & Grille offers central Illinois an experience like no other: golf simulators, great food and nearly 100 crafted beers. As if that isn’t enough, this one-year-old brain child of Charlie McGorray is stocked with experience, fueled by local support and sustained by seasonal league golfers.

Charlie had a vision of this place and wouldn’t quit until it became a success. His family is behind him all the way ̶ with a veteran golf-pro brother-in-law (Jay Dexter) and his

twin sister (Kay Moser) in the ranks, McGorray’s staff is a tight knit bunch. A majority of staffers have been around from the beginning, calling patrons by name.

There are two sessions of league play: late fall and winter. McGorray’s offers house leagues, and various companies around town have formed leagues. Leagues run in ten-week sessions. 10 to 30 golfers can create a league, but keep in mind that each 2-man team takes 1-hour to play

McGorray's aboutGolf simulators let you escape to the most beautiful courses in the world for a round of golf. Who can say no to that during a Midwestern January?

9 holes; teams of four require about 2 hours. “You can’t lose a ball, it never rains and you get to keep your handicap,” says Dexter, who manages the simulators. “Being able to play weekly is important to our local golf enthusiasts.”

Moser, a retired school teacher, manages the golf leagues and serves up a mean plate of food. “It’s nice to see the progress that beginners experience,” states Moser. “This experience isn’t just for seasoned golfers! We offer training that aids beginner’s play and translates to the actual golf course.”

Sounds fun, right? The technology that sustains the simulators defines fun. Each simulator is contained in an exclusive, soft room. The rooms are completely padded for ball retraction. The tee is encased by a raised lip that catches the digitally marked golf ball after it strikes the screen.
