sense of responsibility to help other people with simple acts of kindness. Shortly after the tragedy occurred in Newtown, I read how Danny Siegel, a noted teacher and author who specializes in teaching about simple acts of tzedakah (charity), spoke to some children and parents in a synagogue in New York. His message was very clear; it often does not take a whole lot to make the world a better place. Each of us might take the memory of the twenty six who died in Newtown as motivation to help someone else and add the fulfi lling of mitzvot to our daily lives. It is a way of saying that those who tragically died can still help us to make the world a better place.May we all be comforted at this diffi cult time, and may we use it to realize the blessings we have in our own lives and to be messengers of God’s blessings to others in need.

Honoring Four ChaplainsSunday, February 3, 2013, 1:00 pm

In honor of the gallantry of the four Armed Forc-es Chaplains, Temple Emanu-El will be the host for this year’s American Legion, District 8 (Essex County) of the Department of Massachusetts Memorial Service for the Four Chaplains.

On February 3, 1943 four American Chaplains of different faiths – Protestant, Jewish, and Catho-lic – each gave away their life preservers and their chances for survival when their ship, the USS Dorchester was mortally struck. The four chaplains went down together with the ship. Please join us to commemorate the heroic acts of four Army Chaplains, who gave up their lives when the troop ship Dorchester was torpedoed in the North Atlantic on February 3rd 1943, and to rec-ognize and honor Veterans of the Armed Forces for their patriotic service, dedication and sacrifi ce in the name of freedom. The collation (refreshments) after the Service will be at the Haverhill American Legion Post 4, 1314 Main Street, Haverhill, MA 01830

HEFTY NewsDecember’s big event was a social action project to con-tribute toward the Emergency Boiler Fund. We wanted to do our part and decided to have a bake sale to benefit the Windows to the Future fund. Thank you to Sheila and Isabel Allen for hosting the event. We had a lot of fun baking our goods and selling them at the Chanukah Party and at Snack Shack before Hebrew School on Wednes-day afternoon. Donating the money is just icing on the cake (pun intended). In total, we raised nearly $75 toward the new boiler. It’s a “warm” feeling, being able to help out a little. In the world of NFTY, the Regional group, December In-stitute is just around the corner. December Institute is a 5 day bonding and leadership training event held at Camp Eisner in Great Barrington.January is a busy month for HEFTY with two major events, Shul-In and Shabbaton. Shul-In is an overnight at the Temple on Saturday, Jan. 19th with activities, games and contests around the theme of Jews in Entertainment. Every year we hang out, eat, enjoy activities and ice-breakers, and play games late into the night. Shabbaton is a weekend retreat in the White Mountains beginning on Friday afternoon, January 25th and ending Sunday, January 27th. We celebrate Shabbat, play games, eat a lot, go sledding on a killer hill, hike, swim at the commu-nity sports center, watch movies and much, much more.Hefty is having an amazing year, with record participation and exciting plans for events and activities over the next few months. Please plan on joining us!!! If you have any questions feel free to contact our Youth Advisor Jesse Kamien at [email protected], Youth Chair, Trudy Zakin at [email protected] or me.

NEW Programs, NEW Opportunities for the NEW Year

Chesed CommitteeSafety in the home: In order to keep our homes safe with smoke and carbon monoxide testers, batteries should be changed at least annually. If you are a senior and have difficulty accessing your smoke detector and want help with changing the batteries, please call Harriet Peick at 978-372-5001. Reminder – you will need to sup-ply the batteries and a ladder. If you wish to volunteer in this effort to help others, please call Harriet as well. You can never do too many mitzvot!!Friendly Visitor Program: In our continuing ef-forts to reach out to those who may no longer be able to participate in Temple activities, we will be starting a Friendly Visitor Program for volunteers to visit with se-niors in nursing homes or their own homes. Make new older friends, share stories and interests, bring news and views to our older Temple members. If you are interested in volunteering, please call Carole Taut at 617-257-0140 or Susan Shwom at 978-374-5545.Shiva: Members of the Chesed Committee have been available to help families at the time of a death by either preparing the home for the initial shiva meal or by lead-ing shiva minyan. If you are interested in participating in either of these mitzvot, new orientation programs will be held shortly. Please email Sharyn Russell at [email protected] if you would like more information or would like to participate.

Update on Lotsa Helping Hands from the Chesed CommitteeConnecting people through the power of community; whether you need help or you want to provide help, is the objective of Lotsa Helping Hands as announced by the Chesed Committee. You may be caring for an ill loved one, an aging parent, a child with special needs or a vet-eran. You may want to volunteer to help a friend or others in our congregation. As a starting point, the committee announced its Vision, Mission, and Principles for Lotsa Helping Hands:MissionTo create a caring community of supportVisionLaunch a new computer-based program (LotsaHelp-ingHands) that will electronically allow the coordination of the needs of Temple Members with the volunteers to meet those needs.

Do You Need a Ride to a Temple event?

The Chesed Committee will be happy to help arrange a ride for you. If you need a ride, call the Temple Office at 978-373-3861.

Principles • Maintain confidentiality as appropriate • Organization implemented by Chesed Committee • Involving the broad Temple Membership in creating a

wider community of supportTechnically, the plan is to establish a link through the Temple website to www.lotsahelpinghands.com for communicating and managing Temple-specific projects where our membership can participate in helping. The Chesed committee hopes to have this active in January, 2013. Stay tuned!

It is wonderful to be back at school and into our normal routine! It was obvious that everyone missed their friends as the kids walked in with smiles, hugs and lots of things to catch up with each other. The Chanukah Party was great fun for everyone. Thanks to Mindy Lichtman and her committee for the delicious potato latkes, cookies

and crafts and our Madrichim for decorating. Thanks to Ellen Farber for subbing as accompanist during the kids performance and to Hannah Jacobs and Shaina Gilks for leading the Chanukah singing. Thank you to Martina Nathan and Sisterhood for providing dreidels and choco-late gelt to our students. Our Annual Book Fair took place and I hope everyone will enjoy reading their books on a warm comfy chair as the weather gets colder. Thanks to Lisa Desberg and her committee for taking on this service to the members of our temple community and also to those who reserved tables to sell their merchandise.Grades 3 & 4 will be taking their favorite fi eld trip to The Magic Brush in Tewksbury to create beautiful ceramic seder plates for use at their home Passover seders. On January 25th Grades 1 and 2 will participate in their Family Shabbat Service. I always look forward to this because these students have so much enthusiasm for everything they study when I walk into their classroom to visit on Sundays. Not only does January and the new year come in with a bang it also goes out with one for our 7th graders and HEFTY kids. The annual Shabbaton on the mountains of New Hampshire and the home of Jesse Kamien takes place during the last weekend of January. More on this next time.January is the month of “Colors” and the students will be learning the names of colors in Hebrew. Although it might be white outside (by the time you read this we may have our fi rst real storm of the year – or not) but it should be a colorful time here at the religious school!Happy and Healthy New Year!

Scrip Comes to Temple Emanu-El!We’re pleased to share some exciting news about a new fundraising program for Temple Emanu-El. It’s called “scrip,” and it’s the fundraising program that works while you shop.

Scrip is simply a word that means “substitute money” – in other words, certifi cates from national and local retail-ers. They’re the same gift cards that you buy at the store or online. Many popular retailers participate in our scrip program including Kohl’s, Amazon, iTunes, Shaw’s, Macy’s, Best Buy, The Gap, ExxonMobil, Marshall’s, Starbucks, Panera and many, many others.

You’re probably asking yourself how these stores help us raise money. It’s simple – scrip participating retailers agree to sell gift certifi cates to our organization at a discount. Member families like yours buy the certifi cates for full face value, they redeem them for full face value, and the Temple keeps the diff erence as revenue.

The beauty of scrip is that you put your regular household shopping dollars to work. You earn money for the Temple with-out spending a single additional penny. Just spend your regu-

lar shopping dollars with scrip at the stores that participate in the scrip program – scrip can be used for just about any household purchase including food, clothing, entertainment, gasoline and dining out. Scrip makes a great gift as well!

Temple members ordered $705 worth of scrip in December, our fi rst month using this program, for which the Temple earned $52.90 (approximately 7.5% of all purchases). This has the potential to be a great fundraiser for the Temple. Order your Scrip cards today! Keep cards for Shaw's, Starbucks, Target, CVS, Dunkin Donuts and more in your pocket to use just like cash. The deadline for the next order is Tuesday, Janu-ary 22nd, 2013. Order forms are available in HaSifriyah and the Temple offi ce. Forms may also be downloaded from the Temple’s website: www.TempleEmanu-El.org.

Please support the Temple by participating in this great new program!

Have You Remembered Temple Emanu-El?A bequest to Temple Emanu-El is an excellent way of fulfill-ing the mitzvah of securing a future for our community. When preparing your will or when making changes, please remember the Temple. Your gift will provide for you and your loved ones a lasting way of supporting Jewish life in the greater Haverhill area.

For the sake of Jewish continuity, remember Temple Emanu-El!

Hospital VisitsRabbi Korinow visits the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill weekly or as needed.

The Rabbi wants to visit any member who is in a hospital. If you know that a member of Temple Emanu-El is hospital-ized in any hospital, please call the Rabbi to let him know.

Honor your Mother and your FatherThe Torah tells us that we must always honor our parents. Our Jewish tradition extends that law to say that we must honor all our loved ones, and remember them in death. There is no better way to remember and honor the memory of your departed family members than to have a Memorial Yahrzeit Plaque on the wall of the Temple sanctuary.

You have seen the plaques on the wall of the sanctuary. Each week, the plaques belonging to our beloved departed, whose Yahrzeit, or anniversary of death, is that week, are lighted. This is to recognize the anniversary of that person, and to give us an opportunity to lovingly honor the memory of that person, at least once every year. Also, three times per year, on Yizkor, all the plaques are lit to remember all the loved ones of our Temple.

The plaque contains the name of the deceased, both in English and Hebrew, as well as the date of the person’s death. The plaques are available whenever the sanctuary is open, so someone can always see the name and remember the loving memories of the departed family member. This is a loving way to remember a parent, spouse or child.

The cost of a memorial Yahrzeit plaque is a one-time cost of $250. This cost includes the engraving of the plaque, placing it on the wall, in alphabetical order, and having it lit on Yahrzeit and Yizkor to perpetuity. To purchase a plaque, contact Nancy or the Rabbi at the Temple, (978) 373-3861.
