The St. Mary’s Band has the final piece to its council puzzle after Codie Andrew was ap-pointed by acclamation.
A nomination meet-ing was held Jan. 14 at the St. Mary’s Band Hall to nominate members for the band’s by-elec-tion.
Andrew’s name was put forward by Robert Williams and seconded by Diane Whitehead. With no one challenging Andrew, the nomination stuck to fill up the vacant spot on the St. Mary’s Band Council.
Andrew will be sworn in on January 21 at 5 p.m. at the Band Hall. She will join fellow councillors Joe Pierre, Corey Walk-ley, Marty Williams and chief Jim Whitehead.
Congratulations were offered to Andrew fol-lowing the announc-ment by members of the St. Mary’s Band on their Facebook page.
The by-election was called after outgoing chief Cheryl Casimer stepped down following the original November election for three new councillors.

Edwards did not organize the fund-raiser, Clovechok said.
“The event was or-ganized by Rod Love, who is helping with our campaign and a group of senior Cal-gary business men. This is a unique op-portunity for us to raise some funds, but also to promote our area to Albertans. We call Albertans our friends and neigh-bours. I am going to Alberta representing the people I hope to represent after the next election, the people of Columbia River Revelstoke. We are Alberta friendly, we want Albertans to invest in this area and are open to Albertans doing business here. Columbia River Rev-elstoke is Alberta friendly, but I will be representing British Columbians, not Al-bertans.”
However, Clove-chok says that as sec-ond homeowners at
many resort commu-nities in this riding, Albertans do pay taxes and contribute to the economy.
“I get so many phone calls from Al-bertans who have bought in this riding who want to know where their tax dol-lars are going. They can’t vote, but my of-fice will be open to them. Currently I’ve been told by count-less Albertans that they have tried to write to Norm Mac-donald (NDP MLA) with questions and have received little support.”
Macdonald cate-gorically denies that he doesn’t respond to requests for assis-tance wherever they come from or that he fundraises out of province.
“When?” he asked
of the out of province fundraising. “I know where I raise my money. We raise money from the peo-ple in our area. We get it $100 to $200 at a time. Where our cam-paigns are successful is in volunteers.
“The BC Liberal candidate will have all sorts of money but we will simply out-work him on the ground. We have won the last two elections spending less money than any other win-ning campaign. That speaks to a whole lot of people — from Kimberley to Revel-stoke and across this riding — putting their time and effort into the political process and I am very proud of that. It roots you in doing what is best for all people as a whole rather than a vested
interest.”Macdonald also
says he does hear from Albertans.
“What Mr. Clove-chok is asserting is wrong. We do a good job responding to anything that comes to us. But I represent the people of Colum-bia River Revelstoke. The idea of holding a fundraiser in another province brings up questions. Who are you beholden to?
“We do hear from Albertans and they complain about gas prices which have in-creased dramatically because of BC Liberal policy. They com-plain about the HST, which was official BC Liberal policy. They complain about sec-ond homes purchases being impacted by the HST, which until recently were flat-lined because of BC Liberal policy. These complaints go direct-ly to very controver-sial BC Liberal poli-cies.”
Clovechok said that the timing of the fundraiser was op-portune as both Cole-man and Bennett had other business in Cal-gary at the same time.
Spread too thin?How many Council liaison seats are too
Kimberley City Council has agreed that a look needs to be taken at just what committees councillors serve on and if their time is being spent in the best way. The need for a review of the com-mittee structure came up when the Early Childhood Development team requested a Council liaison for their committee.
The group, formerly the North Star Dream Team, has been instru-mental in the creation of many early childhood initiatives in Kim-berley, including the Early Learn-ing Centre at the former Blarch-mont School.
The EDC coordinator, Gina Panattoni, wrote Council request-ing that a Councillor be appointed to sit with the team at their month-ly meetings. The team has many
community partners, Panattoni said, and would like the City to be a part of it.
There was some concern among Councillors that they were being spread too thin. While the ECD team does great work, said Coun. Jack Ratcliffe, he didn’t know that it required a full time Council liai-son.
However, Coun. Darryl Oakley said he thought council should as-sist the team.
“These are extremely important services,” he said. “Maybe we should look at a review of all com-mittees to make sure our time is used wisely.
“I would support a review of the whole committee structure,” said Mayor Ron McRae. He also said he was somewhat reluctant to appoint a Councillor to another committee, but if a Councillor wanted to vol-unteer to sit on the ECD board, he’d support that.
Coun. Bev Middlebrook stepped forward, saying she thought the work of the ECD team was valuable and Council should be a part of it.

not binding and sometimes require revision. A case in point, Mayor Ron McRae said, was that a bike shuttle program that does not yet have a community partner and the funding will have to be allocated elsewhere.
The province requires that amendments to the strategy are en-dorsed by a stakeholder advisory group, which Kimberley does not currently have.
“The province wants a specific, dedicated committee to provide ad-vice on these investments,” McRae said. “Once the terms of reference are approved, we’ll solicit for interested
members.”However, Coun. Don McCormick
said that almost all the suggested members of the committee, with the exception of Platzl merchants, al-ready sat on the Tourism Kimberley board.
“We pay Tourism Kimberley to look after the need of tourism. It seems like this committee is some-what redundant.”
Coun. Kent Goodwin agreed. “If TK membership was a little more in-clusive we wouldn’t need this new group,” he said.”
However, McRae said it was nec-essary to make sure the interests of the community as a whole would be cared for.

Two sold-out upcom-ing shows at the Key City Theatre in Cranbrook re-flect the local excitement of returning hometown boy Dean Brody.
Brody, who grew up
in Jaffray, B.C., is about to launch a cross-Cana-da tour in support of his album “Dirt,” released in April of last year. Since it’s release, his career in the Country music biz has kicked up a notch.
Brody, who currently resides in Chester, Nova Scotia, said his last cross-Canada trek was about a year and a half ago, with the CMT Hit List Tour. Since then, he’s released his third album, “Dirt,” which reached number 12 on the Cana-dian album charts, had a single in the top 40 of Canada’s Hot 100 (“Ca-nadian Girls), and taken awards for Album of the Year and Male Artist of the Year at the 2012 Ca-nadian Country Music Awards.
So one could expect considerable excitement as he sets out on his first tour in a year and a half.
“I don’t have a whole lot of expectations,” he said. “I do have myself — I have high expecta-tions of myself and the kind of show we put on.
“So as far as the crowd goes, it largely depends on how well I do,” he said with a laugh.
Brody said it will be good to return to Cran-brook — the Key City Theatre is the number four stop on the Dirt Tour (preceded by shows in Victoria, Vancouver and Penticton).
“Cranbrook’s always got electricity when I’m there. It’s a lot of fun
playing at home in the East Kootenay.”
“Dirt” has received rave reviews in the music press on both sides of the border. And Brody’s bringing a band along with him to bring out the best in it.
“I’m really proud of my band,” he said. “They’re some of the best players in Canada — in North America, re-ally. Jason (Barry, for ex-ample), who plays guitar for me, is a multiple CCMA Award-winning guitar player. He’s pro-duced records for Terri Clark, he’s played with Alabama, and all the guys have those kind of resumes.
“That’s one of the most exciting parts about the show — I get to listen to my guys, who are some of the best players in North Ameri-ca.”
Part of the show will be fult-tilt rocking Coun-try, and some will aim for a different approach.
“We’re going to try a different approach for part of the show,” Brody said. “We’re going to go unplugged, to give the audience a bit more of
an intimate, campfire kind of setting. So the fans can get a closer con-nection to us.”
On the first leg of the tour, Brody will be joined by supporting act Small Town Pistols.”
Listeners get a sense of the Canadiana in the music and lyrics on “Dirt.” Songs like “Cana-dian Girls,” “It’s Friday” (with Great Big Sea) or the “Sleeping Bag Song” (written with George Canyon) reflect the small town experience, which most of us who grew up in places like the East Kootenay or south shore Nova Scotia can imme-diately recognize.
But though his songs are informed by this smalltown experience, Brody’s craft is also in part shaped by Nash-ville, Tennessee, where he moved in 2004 to pur-sue his music career, and where he landed a song-writing contract.
“I learned a lot when I was in Nashville,” he said. And Brody’s been asked to return.
“My producer, Matt Rovey, is an executive for a major record label in the U.S., and he’s talked
about it. I’ve recorded al-bums there, my publish-ing deal is still in Nash-ville.
“But I just love Cana-da. My experience going back and forth between the U.S. and Canada has given me a real apprecia-tion for being at home. Some people think I’m crazy — they’re like ‘Man, if I could make it in the U.S., that would be the ultimate.’ Yeah, it would, but the sacrifice I’d have to make in re-gards to my family would be too much.”
“But we probably spend a month, a month and a half there every year, just hanging out with friends, writing songs and recording music. So it’s kind of like a second home to us.
“Until you’ve been across the border, and lived in another country, it’s hard to explain to people that Canada’s special, and whenever you’re away from home there’s a little part of you deep down that reminds you that you’re not quite at home. In Canada I don’t have that feeling.”

Call for Expressions of Interest for the Kimberley Tourism Infrastructure Advisory Committee
From now until January 30, 2013 the City of Kimberley is accepting expressions of interest from prospective members of the Kimberley Tourism Infrastructure Advisory Committee (TIAC).
Kimberley is a BC Resort Municipality and receives provincial funding to enhance its tourism economy. The TIAC will be a non-statutory group made up of 11 members providing the City of Kimberley with advice and recommendations with respect to investments in tourism infrastructure. Initially, appointments will be for a mix of one and two year terms. In future years the terms will be for two years. The Committee shall meet biannually, or as frequently as required. Five members will be nominated by the Chamber of Commerce, Tourism Kimberley, and the Kimberley Alpine Resort. Six members of the public at large will be filled through this expression of interest, including representatives from:

• Restaurants and retail merchants (1 member);• Arts and culture (1 member); and• Festivals and events (1 member).
Candidates are asked to submit a statement of intent, no more than 500 words, identifying which pubic at large position they are interested in, and summarizing their motivation for participation and their relevant experience.
Members will be chosen based on their experience, expertise, and access to relevant networks.

It was a memorable year in weather. 2012 started with a snowy winter, leading into a mild April, followed by record rainfalls and flooding in June, a blessedly dry summer, and more rain in the autumn.
Environment Cana-da meteorologists is-sued a wrap-up of the year in weather this week, and B.C.’s flood-ing was named the third top weather event for the country.
“I’ve looked at over 100 weather events in Canada and boiled it down to ten top stories. Number three in the national roll call of weather in 2012 was the B.C. flooding, which I called larger, longer and lethal,” said David Phillips, a senior clima-tologist with Environ-ment Canada.
Kimberley and Wasa were both hit by flood-ing last year.
In late April, Morri-son subdivision in Kim-berley was under water as Lois and Kimberley Creeks flooded, causing a state of emergency and home evacuations.
Two months later, in late June, Wasa was under water as the lake rose at a rate of one inch per hour.
“We are seeing more times where it is just not one particular loca-tion where we see an event and you can get in there with emergen-cy personnel and pre-pare for it or clean up,” said Phillips. “When it’s happening everywhere, you’re not sure where to send the emergency officials.”
The flooding that af-fected much of the B.C. interior was caused by several factors, ex-plained B.C. meteorol-ogist Matt MacDonald.
“The winter snow-pack was extremely deep on April 1,” he said, adding that around Cranbrook the precipitation between January and April was up to 150 per cent of normal.
Then April was warmer than usual,
MacDonald went on, with average tempera-tures for the month one or two degrees higher than normal.
The final straw was a wet June, where Cran-brook saw rain more than 200 per cent above average.
“With all that snow in the mountains, all that rain falling onto the snow, and with mild temperatures, we saw near record snow melt and run-off,” said Mac-Donald.
Phillips said he placed B.C. floods at number three partly be-cause it affected so many B.C. communi-ties, creating economic impacts especially in regions known for tour-ism.
“You ended up with flooding issues that dominated the prov-
ince and even affected areas for summer recre-ation right into July. Typically they would be making money with recreation and instead they were having to re-store the landscape to something where they could eke out a recre-ation season,” said Phil-lips.
Fairmont Hot Springs was one such affected community, after a mudslide tore through the community on July 15. The hot pools and golf course were closed for weeks after the event as the resort raced to clean up and retrieve the 2012 peak season.
After the East Koote-nay recovered from the spring flooding, we were hit again by a major weather event with a severe thunder-

When summer fi-nally did arrive, it was drier than normal, with the East Kootenay ex-periencing only 40 per cent of the average pre-cipitation for August and September.
“We had a real blessing in those June rains because it be-came dry for a long time after that,” said B.C. meteorologist Doug Lundquist.
But the wet spring still translated to much higher levels of precip-itation in 2012 for most of B.C., especially along the U.S. border.
“Right along the U.S.
border where the rains were at their heaviest in June, despite of the dryness we had in summer and early fall, we ended up with above average precipi-tation through the whole year,” said Lund-quist.
Cranbrook recorded 519 centimetres of pre-cipitation throughout the year, which is 135 per cent of normal.
Overall, the average temperature in 2012 in Cranbrook was 6.6 de-grees Celsius, almost a degree higher than normal.

“Believe it or not, people want to be on this list. I keep saying it’s the worst dressed list, not the best dressed. You don’t want to be known for some weather misery,” said David Phillips.

Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Net-anyahu was once seen as a right-wing figure. Now he’s widely considered to
be a moderate. But it’s not Netanyahu who has changed; Israel has. His governing coalition will certainly win the largest number of seats in the Knesset (parlia-ment) again in the election on 22 January, but his new government will contain lots of people who make him look very moderate indeed.
Consider, for example, Moshe Feiglin, one of the ultra-right-wingers who recently displaced the re-maining moderates in in-ternal elections in Netanyahu’s own Likud Party. “You can’t teach a monkey to speak and you can’t teach an Arab to be democratic,” Feiglin told the New York Times recently. “You’re dealing with a culture of thieves and robbers....The Arab destroys everything he touches.”
Last October, when Likud merged with its hard-right coalition partner, Yis-rael Beitenu (Israel Our Home), it was hailed as Netanyahu’s political master-stroke. Opinion polls predicted that the new alliance would win 47 seats in the new Knesset, compared to the 42 seats they won separately in the last election. But even with Likud-Beitenu’s lurch to the right, it’s still not right-wing enough for many Israeli voters.
Just in the past month, a new party that is even farther to the right, Bayit Ye-hudi (Jewish Home), has surged in the polls, and now Netanyahu’s alliance is predicted to drop to only 34 seats, while the upstart party gets 15. And what is Bayit Yehudi’s leader like?
Naftali Bennett is the 40-year-old son of American immigrants to Israel, a reli-giously observant man who made a small fortune in software development before
going into politics. And he has no inten-tion of wasting his time “babbling about Israel and the Palestinians.” His solution to the problem is for Israel to annex about 60 percent of the West Bank, including almost all the land occupied by Jewish settlers, and to rule the rest forever.
“There is not going to be a Palestinian state within the tiny land of Israel,” he said in an in-terview with The Guard-ian. “It’s just not going to happen. A Palestinian state would be a disaster for the next 200 years.” So in the 40 per cent of the West Bank left to them, in
Bennett’s version of the future, 2.5 mil-lion Palestinians would live under some kind of “autonomous” authority, perma-nently supervised by the Israeli intelli-gence services.
Most of the issues being debated in this Israeli election are domestic ques-tions about the economy and the social welfare net, as in any other country, but there is no doubt that the rise of the right has been fuelled primarily by its hard line on security and territory. What needs to be explained is why so many more Israe-lis are attracted by those policies nowa-days than they were twenty years ago.
The founding generation of Zionists in Israel in 1948 were mostly secular and socialist, and most of them voted for the Labour Party, which dominated Israeli politics until the 1980s. But the Israel of 1948 contained only two-thirds of a mil-lion Jews. Today’s Israel has six million Jews, and most of them are neither secu-lar nor socialist in their outlook. Nor, in most cases, are they descended from that founding generation.
The early post-independence waves of immigrants were mostly “oriental” Jews, primarily refugees from Arab countries,
who were religious and conservative in their outlook. They were numerous, and had much higher birth-rates than secular Jews. Then, from the 1980s onwards, came the Russians and other post-Soviet Jews, who had no sympathy at all for so-cialism. Together, they have transformed Israeli politics.
About 50 per cent of Israeli Jews now identify themselves as traditional, reli-gious or ultra-Orthodox. Only 15 per cent describe themselves as secular. And both the religious and the post-Soviet Jews are mostly on the right politically – in the case of the ultra-Orthodox, 79 per cent of them, compared to only 17 per cent of secular Jews. The new Israel is capitalist, religious and, in many cases, ultra-na-tionalist.
Did the “peace process” die because Israelis were becoming more right-wing, or did the failure of the peace process push Israelis to the right? That may sound like a chicken-and-egg question, but in fact Israel was already moving right for demographic reasons at least a decade before the peace process began. By now it has traveled a long way in that direction.
Together, Netanyahu’s Likud Beitenu alliance and Bennett’s Bayit Yehudi will win around 50 seats in this election, which puts them within easy range of a majority in the 120-seat Knesset. Just bring in a couple of the minor parties (some of which are also quite far over on the right), and they will have a strong right-wing coalition. Netanyahu will still be prime minister, but he will have to bring Naftali Bennet and other hard-right leaders into the cabinet.
And then life in the Middle East will get even more interesting than it is al-ready.

Cranbrook has a Mount Baker. So does the State of Washington. In fact, so does Uganda.
All three are named for rela-tives of the same family, of whom our own town founder James Baker is a member. There is a Baker’s Falls in Sri Lanka and the seventh-largest lake of Africa is Lake Albert and if you think that is beside the point, it’s not.
In creating the town of Cranbrook and thereby, ac-cording to some, denying near-by Fort Steele the opportunity to become the district railway centre, James Baker has been both lauded and vilified, de-pending from which side of the political and real estate fence the voices came.
He was a soldier, a scholar, a politician, a rancher, a scion of the landed gentry – in short, the quintessential English squire.
James Baker is a singularly interesting individual as were many of his family. Collective-ly, he and his relations, espe-cially his brothers, create a fas-cinating tale rarely found out-side of fiction, a saga of love and war, glory and sacrifice, wealth and scandal, a tale of derring-do of the highest level.
To understand the brothers is to more clearly understand James and to therefore more clearly understand the roots of our community.
We look first at Samuel White Baker Jr., the second-el-dest of the four Baker boys, sons of Samuel Baker Sr., a wealthy Englishman whose in-vestments in the sugar industry on the islands of Jamaica and Mauritius ensured that his heirs would want for neither money nor prestige.
Samuel White Baker, born June 8, 1821, in London, was an adventurous, clever and jo-vial lad. Handsome, not too tall, square-shouldered and barrel-chested with curly au-burn hair, he was raised in a life of ease to become every bit the sporting English gentleman.

Her name was Florence Barbara Maria, daughter of a rich Hungarian-German offi-cer of the Von Sass family who, along with his sons, was slaughtered in front of Flor-ence’s eyes during a rebellion a few years earlier. She escaped to Armenia but was eventually abducted, sold and groomed for a harem. She thus found herself under the hopeful gaze of her bidders.

They appear to have be-come equally enamoured of one another and were married in England in 1865 in a service in which brother James and his wife Louisa were the only guests.
The entire situation hinted of scandal to Sam’s aristocratic peers, including former sup-porter Queen Victoria who re-fused to accept Sam and Flor-ence at court, suspecting they may have had marital relations prior to their wedding.

It was a serious social blow but neither Sam nor his young wife were easily felled.

many eventually brought him a degree as a civil engineer in 1841, following which he spent some time designing railways in Romania.
His true passion was, and always would remain, hunting – big-game hunting if possible – for which he designed a twenty-one pound, muz-zle-loading rifle capable of blasting large things into much smaller things.
In 1843, he married Henri-etta Martin, daughter of an En-glish rector, in a double wed-ding in which Sam’s eldest brother John married Henriet-ta’s sister, Eliza.
In due time both couples sailed to Mauritius to oversee the family plantation.
Sam and Henrietta had seven children over the ensu-ing years, of which both sons and one daughter would die young.
In 1847 Sam moved his family to Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to create an English settlement at the remote Nu-wara Eliya, a mountain health resort where, joined by broth-ers John and Valentine, his brewery, crops and livestock eventually began to pay divi-dends.
It was seven years later when he and his family re-turned to England, all suffer-ing poor health from the ef-fects of their extended stay in the tropics.
Henrietta died of typhus in 1855, leaving Sam with four children whom - declaring himself incapable and the girls in need of a woman’s touch - he turned over to his sister Mary (Min) to raise.
He fell into a funk and began a period of idle wander-ing, travelling to the Crimea to visit his brothers James and Valentine as they fought in the cavalry against the Russians during the Crimean War.
Although fearless by na-ture, Sam was not inclined to-wards soldiering and jour-neyed onward to Romania, overseeing the construction of a railway from the Danube to the Black Sea. He even consid-ered joining David Living-stone’s expedition to Africa but was refused on the grounds that he “lacked a useful occu-pation”.
It was in 1859, during a visit to the Bulgarian City of Vidin on a hunting expedition to central Europe with Mahara-jah Duleep Singh, that Sam’s life took a most dramatic turn.
While attending a white-slave auction Sam became captivated with a young, blond, beautiful girl on the auction block.
He took up the bidding but was bested by the local Otto-man Pasha (personage of high rank) himself, who also had eyes for the fair maid.

Volleyball action will take over the gym at the College of the Rockies gym this weekend as the Avalanche host the visit-ing Vancouver Island University Mariners.
The two teams have clashed before, when the Avs travelled down to the Island in their final road trip of the fall semester. The Mariners swept both the men’s and women’s Avalanche teams, with the men winning one set in their first game.
Both teams are hop-ing home court advan-tage gives them an edge.
“It’s no fun to play in their gym, it’s kind of an odd place to play but I think it’ll be a lot differ-ent with home court ad-vantage,” said Kellan Ward, who plays libero for the men’s team.
Rebecca Zemlak, who plays middle with the women’s squad, agreed, noting that her team will be fresh, while the opponents will have to deal with the effects of a 15-hour bus ride.
“We’re well rested and those teams that come here, they’re not used to having those
long bus rides,” Zemlak said. “That’s a big ad-vantage for us, is they’re tired and they’re out of their element.”
Ward points to an unusual court that threw his team off when the men were playing at VIU in November, espe-cially when it came to deploying the serve as a weapon.
“Their house is very wide and very weird to play in, there’s not a lot of bearing, so they served us quite well, whereas in our home, we serve quite well,” said Ward. “I think we have a good chance of hurting them in that re-gard.”
In addition to good serving, Ward notes other parts of the men’s game against the Mari-ners is important.
“Just shutting down the middle attack,” Ward continued. “They have a pretty good middle there—Lee Hamilton—he’s pretty big, pretty es-tablished in the middle, so we’ll find strategies to shut him down and minimize his success.”
The women, coming off two losses last week-end, are hoping to take a few lessons learned to
heart against their op-ponents.
“Just being consis-tent and coming out with that fire and all of us being on the same page,” said Zemlak, “and having that will, motiva-tion and desire to win. We’ve done a lot of mental prep this week, so I think that’ll be ben-eficial going into this weekend.”
The ladies have worked hard in practice
over the last week and remember a few things from their last meeting on the Island as well.
“Just play to their weaknesses, so being strategic and having a strong offence will be really good for us, as well as keeping up a solid block,” continued Zemlak.
“We have our two outside hitters—Kelsey and Andy—they’re real-ly huge for our team so
we want to use them, but we also want to switch it up by using our middle and all of our offence, so VIU doesn’t know who’s going to be attacking.”
The women kick off competition at the Col-lege of the Rockies on Friday at 6 p.m. followed by the men at 8 p.m. Action on Saturday starts at 1 p.m. followed by the men two hours later.

The Mount Baker Wild junior basketball team returned with a second place finish at a tournament in Pentic-ton this past weekend, falling to the top-ranked team in the province in the finals.
The team cruised through competition from Merritt, South Ka-mloops Secondary and Kelowna Secondary School to make it to the final game, where they faced W.J. Mouat Sec-ondary out of Abbots-
ford. The Wild held a 12-
point lead in the first quarter, but lost it and faced a two-point deficit by the half. The Hawks drained a trio of three-pointers in the third quarter and had a 16-point lead against the Wild.
However, the Baker girls fought back and came within six points of catching up, before the final buzzer sound-ed, with a 53-39 score in favour of W.J. Mouat.
Even in victory, the Hawks coach praised
the Baker girls, saying they were the toughest team his squad has faced all year.
The Hawks still re-tain their number-one ranking in the province, but the Wild aren’t far behind, with a fifth-place provincial rank-ing.
Ray-Lyn Pighin was the top scorer against Merritt, South Kam-loops Secondary and W.J. Mouat, while Bob-bi-Jo Colburn took the honour against the Kelowna Secondary School.

New England gets a chance to extend its mastery in the final step to the Super Bowl on Sunday against Bal-timore, the team the Patriots beat a year ago for the conference crown. That win made them 4-0 in home con-ference title games.
Although they were more vulnerable at home than usual during the 2012 regular season, losing to Arizo-na and San Francisco and having tight games with Buffalo and the Jets, the Patriots (13-4) are happy not to be heading to Baltimore (12-6) this weekend. Or anywhere else.
“Everything is on
deck,” Patriots Pro Bowl defensive tackle Vince Wilfork said. “You have to put everything you have into this game. If you lose you go home, plain and simple.”
But the Patriots are at home, where they’ve been beaten in ear-ly-round games, in-cluding against the Ra-vens 33-14 three years ago. At this stage,
though, no way.That success rate for
the AFC championship doesn’t fool Wilfork into feeling compla-cent. Just the opposite.
“This team always plays us tough,” Wilfork added. “This team has been in the playoffs on the road and won a lot of games. They won here in the playoffs. We have to be able to pre-
pare well and execute very well at a high level. I don’t think we can (leave) no stone un-turned in this game, because if we do it could cost us.”
The Patriots are one of the NFL’s best home teams, going 73-15 since Gillette Stadium opened in 2002, in-cluding 10-2 in the post-season. Many of
those games have been routs.
But the Ravens are 8-5 in road playoffs, in-cluding their upset of the Broncos in double overtime last Saturday in an equally tough venue.
And there’s no rea-son to fear a trip to Fox-borough, where no one has fared better in the playoffs.

Kaepernick comes to Atlanta after running for 181 yards - an NFL re-cord for a quarterback - with two touchdowns in last week’s win over Green Bay. Kaepernick also threw for 263 yards with two touchdowns. He became only the third quarterback, after
Otto Graham and Jay Cutler, to run and throw for at least two touch-downs in a post-season game.
It’s little wonder the Falcons are impressed, even after facing such other dual-threat quar-terbacks as Robert Grif-fin III, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson this sea-son.

They say there is a sucker born every min-ute, and I am one of them.
Why, do you ask?Well, when the Ca-
nucks get set to drop the puck against the Ducks on Saturday night, I’ll be in front of a TV cheering them on.
During the labour dispute, I swore that once a deal was made and a new season began, I would turn my back on the NHL, just like it turned it’s back on their fans when the lockout began in September.
However, I am weak.
My hockey cravings have been sated by keeping tabs on the Kootenay Ice and the Kimberley Dynamiters, but I’ve missed the feel-ing of being let down by my Canucks.
I’m a sucker for abuse.
I was destined to be a fan of Vancouver’s NHL team, as I was born in the Lower Mainland and grew up watching guys like the Russian Rocket and Captain Ca-nuck lead the team to oh so close to Lord Stan-ley’s cup in 1994.
With the same fer-
vour, I sat on the edge of my seat in the spring of 2011, when the Canucks again made a run to the final round of the play-offs, which ended with an agonizing loss in Game Seven to the Bos-ton Bruins.
I was choked about the lockout 2004, just like everyone else, but it seemed as if the latest dispute really struck a nerve with the fan base across the league.
After the last CBA was signed in the sum-mer of 2005, NHL reve-nues have done nothing but up at a compound
annual growth rate of 6.35 per cent.
In 2011/2012, the NHL raked in $3.28 bil-lion.
That’s billion, with a B.
Again, just like every-one one else, I got sick of seeing the suits on both sides get up in front of the cameras and say
they’d rather be playing hockey than negotiating around a table.
It felt as if the spirit of the game was getting lost in the dollars and cents.
However, the allure of watching the worlds best hockey players compete for the Stanley Cup—a trophy that is the hardest to win in professional sports—is simply too strong to ig-nore.
And, after two sea-sons of covering WHL (and CHL) hockey, I’m also following these young guys as they
begin the transition into their professional ca-reers in The Show.
The shortened sea-son will shake things up, as a 48-game schedule puts pressure on teams to come out of the gate firing on all pistons.
Each game carries that much more impor-tance without the grind of an 82-game schedule, which raises some inter-esting questions:
Will Edmonton’s youth be an advantage, with guys like Taylor Hall, Jordan Eberle, Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Nail Yakupov? Will
the Kings be able to re-peat with it’s core still intact from their cham-pionship last season? With Vancouver’s aging roster, has their window to a Stanley Cup closed? Will picking up Zach Parise and Ryan Suter be worth the $200 mil-lion price tag in Minne-sota?
These questions can only be answered when the teams begin their new campaign on Satur-day, and though I’d love to spite the NHL and give it the cold shoulder, I know I won’t be able to turn away.

LAIE, Hawaii - People in the small Hawaii hometown of Manti Te’o stood firmly behind the Notre Dame linebacker after the story of his girl-friend and her death from leukemia were re-vealed as a hoax.
For the second day Thursday, no one an-swered the door at the modest, single-story wood home of Te’o’s par-ents, in the small coastal town of Laie on Oahu’s northern shore where Manti Te’o, an All-Ameri-can and Heisman Tro-phy finalist, was born. Brian and Ottilia Te’o, did not appear to be inside.

ly Mormon community said they were dumb-founded and didn’t be-lieve Manti Te’o would have knowingly perpe-trated such a story. The town of about 6,000 peo-ple, roughly an hour’s drive from Honolulu, is home to a small Hawaii satellite campus of Brigham Young Univer-sity.
According to media accounts that surround-ed Te’o this season, his purported girlfriend, Lennay Kekua, died of leukemia in September. But on Wednesday, the website Deadspin.com posted a lengthy story saying there was no evi-dence that she ever exist-ed.

He was light on the details and didn’t name names. He mused that he might not have been caught if not for his comeback in 2009. And he was certain his “fate was sealed” when long-time friend, training partner and trusted lieutenant George Hin-capie, who was along for the ride on all seven of Armstrong’s Tour de France wins, was forced to give him up to an-ti-doping authorities.
But right from the start and more than two dozen times during the first of a two-part inter-view Thursday night with Oprah Winfrey, the disgraced former cy-
cling champion ac-knowledged what he had lied about repeat-edly for years, and what had been one of the worst-kept secrets for the better part of a week: He was the ringleader of an elaborate doping scheme on a U.S. Postal Service team that swept him to the top of the podium at the Tour de France time after time.
“At the time it did not feel wrong?” Winfrey asked.
“No,” Armstrong re-plied. “Scary.”
“Did you feel bad about it?” she pressed him.
“No,” he said. “Even scarier.”
“Did you feel in any way that you were cheating?”
“No,” Armstrong
paused. “Scariest.”“I went and looked
up the definition of cheat,” he added a mo-ment later. “And the definition is to gain an advantage on a rival or foe. I didn’t view it that way. I viewed it as a level playing field.”
Whether his tele-
vised confession will help or hurt Armstrong’s bruised reputation and his already-tenuous de-fence in at least two pending lawsuits, and possibly a third, remains to be seen. Either way, a story that seemed too good to be true - cancer survivor returns to win one of sport’s most gru-eling events seven times in a row - was revealed to be just that.
Winfrey got right to the point, asking for yes-or-no answers to five questions.
Did Armstrong use banned substances? “Yes.”
Did he use EPO? “Yes.”
Did he do blood dop-ing and transfusions? “Yes.”
Did he use testoster-
one, cortisone and human growth hor-mone? “Yes.”
Did he do it in all seven of his Tour wins? “Yes.”
Along the way, Arm-strong cast aside team-mates who questioned his tactics, yet swore he raced clean and tried to silence anyone who said otherwise. That relent-less pursuit was one of the things that Arm-strong said he regretted most.
“It’s a major flaw, and it’s a guy who ex-pected to get whatever he wanted and to con-trol every outcome. And it’s inexcusable. And when I say there are people who will hear this and never forgive me, I understand that. I do.”

Dear Annie: My parents have been di-vorced for 30 years. Both made mistakes when they were married, but the end was due to my mom’s drinking. Dad provided for me and now takes an active role in his grandchildren’s lives, always making an ef-fort to show up for their events. Mom is a different story. She is an alco-holic. When I was younger, she constantly criticized me. I was never “good enough.” She demeans my housekeeping skills, my parenting and my appearance. Mom also has become increasingly negative about my father. She has something bad to say about him every time I speak to her. She blames Dad for the way her life turned out. I have a hard time trusting her with my children. I attempted to make regular vis-iting arrangements when the kids were younger, but she would never commit to a specific schedule. Now she rarely sees them because making the time isn’t a priority. Over the years, I have gone to counseling, and I have created a good life for myself. I have suggested counseling to Mom, but she refuses to get help for any of her various issues. I’ve also suggested talking to other family members, although she’s estranged from most of them. I really am at the end of my rope. The few visits she makes are stressful and anxiety filled. I have already limited contact to when I am prepared to handle her, and frankly, I don’t want to bother anymore. But I hate the idea of hurting her. She is still my mother. How can I deal with her negativity? -- Tired Daughter Dear Tired: We understand that Mom’s visits are exhausting, and you are right to limit them. Now you need to create bound-aries for her behavior. If she speaks negative-ly, say, “I don’t wish to discuss this.” If she keeps at it, you can leave or ask her to leave. It might change her behavior, but if not, at least you won’t be there to listen to it. We also urge you to contact Adult Children of Alcoholics (adultchildren.org) for additional support. Dear Annie: A few days ago, I attended the wake of a good friend of 40 years. She was in her mid-50s and died unexpectedly. She left a 12-year-old daughter. As we arrived at the funeral home, we thought there was a line to sign in. Wrong. It turned out to be about 25 “tweens” practic-ing their cheerleading. These girls blocked the front door and the hallway. They were loud, laughing, taking pictures and running around. This continued all night long. Not one person said a word to them. I don’t know whose job it should have been to tell them to sit down and be quiet, but I feel I didn’t get the chance to properly mourn my friend. There was no funeral ser-vice. Should I have talked to these girls or someone else? -- Still Grieving Dear Still: Someone at the funeral home should have taken charge of this circus and asked the girls to be more respectful, and you could have spoken to the funeral di-rector. But we hope it was comforting to the 12-year-old to see her friends there, even if they were laughing and taking pictures. It’s a blessing not to know death at that age. Dear Annie: “Realistic” referred to the decline of the elderly as “the angry human wreckage they become.” That statement is a sad commentary. Most elderly do not take such a negative route in their final days. My grandmothers were both sweet, vulnerable and a little bit scared in the end, but neither hostile nor combative. This may have been because they were surrounded by people who truly loved and supported them during that vulnerable time. soared dramatically be-cause people were afraid that new restric-tions on gun ownership would be put in place.
Advocates of the right of people to own guns started flooding the airwaves proclaim-ing loudly that it’s not guns who kill people; people kill people, they say.
They’re wrong. It’s people with guns who kill people.
The NRA continues to shout that it is a fun-damental right for citi-zens to be able to pur-chase assault weapons.
The other thing I couldn’t believe is that
some people, such as Maricopa County Sher-iff Joe Arpaio (centred around Phoenix, AZ), who describes himself as “America’s toughest sheriff”, has said that armed posses would begin patrolling the
areas around schools to keep them safe.
Both in the U.S. and in Canada, weapons are becoming an idol for many.
There is a growing cycle of violence in which people respond more and more quickly to each other with vio-lence.
But Martin Luther King reminded us that violence is not power.
As someone (I forget where I read this) put it, “A gun may kill a per-son, but it cannot kill the spirit. It cannot kill an idea. Its ability to ef-fect long–term change is negligible. A gun can-
not protect us from tyr-anny, especially when we are facing the tyran-ny of fear.”
We honour Martin Luther King, Jr. because of his commitment to nonviolence and for his ability to articulate a dream of justice and equality, not just in the U.S., but across the globe.
He sought to bring out the best in people and in his nation.
He said: “With this faith we will be able to transform the jangling discords of our nation into a beautiful sym-phony of brotherhood.”
He taught that soul
force was more power-ful than physical force.
He believed strongly that only nonviolent means could bring non-violent ends.
His movement faced extreme and relentless violence. People in the civil rights movement were shot and bombed; he himself was assassi-nated.
That level of vio-lence, however, wasn’t able to stop the move-ment towards more equal rights.
“The arc of the moral universe is long,” King said, “but it bends to-ward justice.”
On the night before
he was brutally gunned down on a Memphis hotel balcony at the age of 39, he said, “I’ve been to the mountaintop and I have looked over and I have seen the promised land and we as a people will get to the promised land.”
I pray that we will seize this moment as another opportunity to renounce violence, to restrict access to assault weapons, and to make a new commitment to power through nonvio-lence.

There is a remark-able coincidence of events this
coming Monday in the U.S.
First of all, it’s a fed-eral holiday celebrating the legacy of Martin Lu-ther King, Jr.
King was the chief spokesman for nonvio-lent action in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. A Baptist preach-er, King proclaimed that people needed to stand up for an end to racial discrimination and to do so in a nonviolent way.
He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. The citation ac-companying the award acknowledged that he was the “first person in the Western world to have shown us that a struggle can be waged without violence.”
Secondly, it’s also the day when President Obama will celebrate his second inaugura-tion. In a very real sense, Obama as the first Afri-can American President is a visible symbol of the legacy of King and the civil rights movement.
Thirdly, this year marks the 150th anni-versary of the Emanci-pation Proclamation. Abraham Lincoln is-sued the proclamation during the Civil War be-tween the northern and southern states, and de-creed “that all persons held as slaves” within the Southern states “are, and henceforward shall be free.”
I was reflecting on this sequence of events coming together, partic-ularly in the wake of one of the worst mass shoot-ings in the history of the U.S., the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.
Martin Luther King Jr. understood that vio-lence does not equal power. Our neighbours to the south are grap-pling now with the question of gun vio-lence and gun control. We dare not think that we are immune; the same kind of violence is growing in Canada as well.
I found the response made by the gun lobby in the U.S. and those who are strongly in fa-vour of maintaining the status quo to be quite shocking, almost be-yond belief.

AURORA, Colo. — The Colorado movie theatre where a gunman killed 12 people and wounded dozens of others reopens Thursday with a pri-vate ceremony for victims, first re-sponders and officials — an event boycotted as insensitive by some of those who lost loved ones in the mas-sacre.
Theatre owner Cinemark plans to temporarily reopen the entire 16-screen complex in Aurora to the public on Friday, then permanently on Jan. 25. Aurora’s mayor, Steve Hogan, has said residents over-whelmingly support reclaiming what
he calls “an important venue for Au-rora.’’
Former neurology student James Holmes is charged with 166 felony counts, mostly murder and attempt-ed murder, in the July 20 massacre at a midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.’’ Holmes has until March to enter a plea.

Those invited to attend included victims, families, first responders, Hogan and Gov. John Hickenlooper.
Some victims said it’s important to reclaim the theatre. Others called its reopening insensitive and refused an
invitation to attend Thursday’s event.“The community wants the the-
atre back and by God, it’s back,’’ said Tom Sullivan, whose son, Alex Sulli-van, 27, was killed. “Nobody is going to stop us from living our lives the way that we lived our lives before.’’
Michael White Sr.’s son, Michael Jr., suffered a punctured lung and a broken rib and shoulder blade. He ultimately decided to stay away from the cinema.
“With me, it’s like going to a cem-etery and walking across somebody’s grave,’’ the older White said. “I think it’s disrespectful to do that.’’

It is with great sorrow that the family of Anna McDonald announces her peaceful passing at the F. W. Green Memorial Home in Cranbrook on Monday, January 14, 2013.
Anna was born on June 22, 1923 in Lethbridge, Alberta. She was a stay at home mom and enjoyed time with her family and
friends and baking. She will be forever remembered as a kind and caring lady.
Anna is survived by her siblings Jim (Elsie), Connie, Lil and Ken (Bernice); her children Clarence (Rina), Marion (Jim), Martha (Syd), Irene (Elgin), Dave (Tracy) and Mark (Tannis); as well as many grandchildren and great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her son Wayne and two husbands.
A memorial service for Anna will be held at McPherson Funeral Home in Cranbrook on Tuesday, January 22, 2013 at 1:30 pm. Alice-Mae Biddlecombe April 18, 1931 - January 14, 2013
It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Alice-Mae Biddlecombe, wonderful wife, best friend and soul mate of Frank Biddlecombe. As she left us, she was surrounded with the love of Frank and her children, Lynda, Wendy (Philip), Ian (Rae), Pam (Dale) and Craig and grandchildren Lisa and Troy. Mae also had 10 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Gone on before Mae were her parents John Harlow and Mae Scott, step-father John Scott, son-in-law Don, and grandson Sean.
In 1951, while working at Fabro’s, Mae met and married Frank, settling into raise her family. During this time mom was active with many things, including being secretary for the Senior Citizen Association, president and secretary for the East Kootenay Vintage Car Club bowling and PTA. Mae also enjoyed swimming, knitting and sewing.
Family was important to Mae and she enjoyed the growth as her children married, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren came along to share in her life.
A funeral service for Mae will be held on Saturday, January 19, 2013 at 5:00 pm at the McPherson Funeral Home Chapel in Kimberley. in Lieu of flowers, donations in honour of Mae can be made to the: Canadian Diabetes Association, PO Box 12013 Stn BRM B, Toronto, Ontario, M7Y 2L3.

Ten Reasons to Advertise on a Newspaper Website
1. Frequency: The online newspaper Web site user accesses the Internet almost twice as much as the general user.
2. Credibility: The credibility of the newspaper brand extends to the advertiser. Fifty-nine percent of Web users agree that online advertising is more believable from a trusted Web site. Online, newspaper Web sites are the dominant local media site in most markets.
3. Targeted: If you want to focus on a particular backyard, advertising in an online newspaper is more personal, and more relevant because it is local. Newspapers also publish a plethora of niche sites (youth, women, movie fans, seniors, are illustrative) for virtually any demographic advertisers could possibly hope to reach.
4. Purchasing power: Sixty-two percent of newspaper Web site users purchase online compared with 49 percent of general users. Thirty-nine percent of online newspaper users have incomes higher than $75,000; 65 percent own their homes. Fifty percent of online newspaper users have spent more than $500 online in the last six months, and 63 percent of online newspaper users prefer to find out about new products through the Internet.
5. Content: After e-mail, the most preferred Web content is news, sports, financial information, entertainment news, and shopping – in that order. Sixty-two percent of Internet users visit online newspapers for local news, compared with 39 percent for the local TV station Web site and 23 percent for the local radio station site. Not even Yahoo! or AOL’s Digital City can top this.
6. Retailers prefer newspaper sites: Sixty-five percent of retailers report that newspaper sites are efficient in assisting them in meeting marketing needs compared with other sites.
7. High profile: Research.net reports that, among top executives (CEO, CIO, CFO or owner/partner), Internet advertising ranked above over all other media measured for: “Where I prefer to find our about new products,” “Where I prefer to receive information about companies,” and “Where modern, up-to-date brands advertise.” At the same time, these early adopters of technology also skew younger than the traditional newspaper audience. Forty percent of online newspaper users are aged 18-35.
8. Reinforcement: Seventy-six percent of online newspaper users also read the newspaper in the past seven days, and repetition increases awareness. The Internet Advertising Bureau found that, by increasing the number of online banners from one to two per week, branding results on three key metrics increased 42 percent making online a great, inexpensive way to increase the branding lift of traditional campaigns.
9. Quality: Seventy-five percent of advertisers generally said newspaper Web sites’ advertising was as good or better than other Internet sites.
10. Mix: A variety of recent studies have demonstrated the power of online, when included in a mix with traditional media, to elaborate the brand message. Newspaper print and online products combined have the highest penetration and most desirable audience of any other local medium.

Dear Wendy:I met this man in Oc-

We feel we know you and you are such a laidback person that this type of energy may
be a little tiring and wearing for your ener-gy level.
I asked my guides if we could do a “spec” on your boyfriend and this is what we have discov-ered: He is not an alco-holic and he does not take drugs.
He is not a verbal abuser but he can and does have a tendency to have his little temper tantrums.
The reason he gets into these states is be-cause he becomes overwhelmed with what is happening around him.
If you notice, he will have a hard time emo-tionally if he has a heavy work load, or there is a lot of clutter around him or if he can’t accomplish what he wants to in the time he wants to do it.
He will appear to be angry but he is not angry at all just over-whelmed in what he feels he needs and has to do.
He will not ask for help but he will appreci-
ate it if you help him at certain times.
You will then notice that his anxiety level will go down and he will be a lot more emotionally stable.
We feel that when you meet his mother you will know the rea-son why he has this type of personality.
Don’t forget, anxi-ety disorder is genet-ic but there is also some learned be-haviour patterns that children pick up from the parent or parents
as well. He is not a cheater
but he does have a ten-dency to be a control freak at times. This again we believe is be-cause of his anxiety dis-order.
In conclusion, if you really like this man – which we feel that you do – it may not be a bad idea to meet his family at Christmas.
I know that this letter is coming a bit late be-cause Christmas has come and gone.
Therefore, if you
have not met his family as of yet it may be a good idea to do so.
You will then get a better idea of why he is the way he is when you meet his mom.
His mom is not a bad person; she has become a victim to her anxiety disorder. She does not recognize or accept that she has any issues with anxiety.
Therefore, she has done nothing to educate or improve herself when it comes to this prob-lem.
Hence her son also lives in ignorance not knowing why he is re-acting to certain situa-tions with so much frus-tration and fear.
We hope this infor-mation has helped you in deciding if you want to pursue this re-lationship with your gentleman compan-ion.

VANCOUVER — The Crown says the naviga-tion officer who was pi-loting the Queen of the North passenger ferry the night it sank seven years ago, killing two people, made no at-tempt to steer the ship away from the island that it hit.
Karl Lilgert is charged with criminal negligence causing the deaths of Gerald Foisy and Shirley Rosette, who were killed after the ferry ran aground and sank in the early hours of March 22, 2006.
Crown lawyer Rob-ert Wright has opened the trial by telling ju-rors the evidence will show Lilgert missed a crucial turn and trav-elled straight for about 22 minutes be-
fore hitting Gil Island without taking any evasive actions to change course.
Wright says Lilgert failed in his duties to keep a lookout and maintain his course, despite having mod-ern navigation tech-nology on board, and did not communicate any problems to other crew or the ship’s cap-tain.
Lilgert was charged in March 2010, four years after the sinking, and has pleaded not guilty.
The trial is expected to last up to six months, prompting the judge to take the unusual step of appointing 14 jurors in-stead of 12 to ensure there won’t be a mistrial if any jurors are dis-charged.
