Problem – over 9 hectares of dazzling displays and booths featuring
everything automotive sprawling in front of us – where do we begin?
Best to start at a corner of one of four halls, and systematically work your
way down each row of exhibitors in an orderly manner. Easier said than done.
To your left is a 3D printer methodically reproducing a complete car in a
carbon fibre composite, and to your right is the new 2015 Corvette Stingray
styled by KISS star Paul Stanley, and in front of you are CNC machines
churning out pistons each worthy as a piece of art...and then you spot a little
booth in the corner with a man selling an extension wrench the type of which
you’ve never seen before. You’ve got to buy it, and then you wonder how
you’re going to get it home as you lumber around with it in your show bag.
This is SEMA 2014, the biggest yet, with over 150,000 attendees mixing and
mingling with over 2,500 exhibitors.
The halls are so large you cannot see where they end. Open to trade only,
you will come across professional people from all over the world. Exhibitors
always welcome you warmly when they see you are from New Zealand,
and enthusiastically talk about their products. There are thousands and
thousands of booths offering free samples, beautiful show girls who purr
over pistons, machines and tools you can only dream about, and cars, so
many cars that have been lovingly restored, modified and decked out in
ways you could never imagine.

CAPRICORN newsSEMA 2014 by Capricorn members amber and Rod mcCardle
It’s true to say that six hours later on the first day, after
you have only seen half of the first hall, you can get a little
“SEMA-ED” out. But the trick is to return to your hotel, put
your feet up with a cold drink, absorb the brochures you
have collected, then return refreshed the following day to
continue your epic trek around the show.
At SEMA 2014, the open air area was bigger than ever, and
there was a mind-boggling array of cars you usually only
see in magazines. On the last day of the show, all these
automobiles participate in the SEMA “Cruise Event”. Each
beautiful, and not so beautiful, car made its way down to the
strip of Las Vegas – some purring, some spluttering, some
simply just being themselves.
Among them was this barely recognisable Ford F250, from
the “B Forged” mag wheel booth – a truck owned by “Royalty
Core” who specialise in grilles and accessories.
As well as this 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray – designed,
believe it or not, by Paul Stanley from the infamous rock
band KISS. The “candy red” and "midnight glaze silver"
trim is absolutely stunning, as is the 6.2 litre, 460 horse
power engine, which would be plenty for any trip down to
the local dairy.
Then your eyes would have been assaulted by a machine
looking a bit like a horror movie – a Rat Rod with real
attitude.
So as you may have guessed, two owners of a little workshop
in Paihia, New Zealand, really enjoyed their SEMA experience.
If you’re thinking of going for the first time – “Just do it!”
Not only will you be wow-ed by the show, but also by the
striking desert scenery of Nevada, and of course by Vegas
itself. Also around the time of SEMA there is the NHRA
Drag Racing at the Motor Speedway, and the once a year
“Aviation Nation”- a spectacular air-show put on at the Nellis
US Airforce Base just out of Las Vegas. Need any more
excuses? We think not!

out of the V8 Supercars...By Paul Marinelli
Australia’s premier motor racing category, V8
Supercars, is taking on the reality of the rapidly
changing Australian motoring landscape head on.
Eligible vehicle size, type and engine configurations
have all been reviewed and the sport’s organisers
have just announced a raft of changes that will be
implemented from 2017 to keep the sport in line with
Australian vehicle purchasing and popularity trends.
There are currently five manufacturers competing
in V8 Supercars, with either major or nil levels of
actual car manufacturer support. These are Ford,
Holden, Nissan, Volvo and Mercedes-Benz AMG
Customer Sports. Ford has recently announced that
it will officially exit the sport after the 2015 season,
which does not mean that Ford vehicles will not take
part, they may do so, but they will do so without
factory support. The theory behind that customer
facing decision given their imminent closure of
local manufacturing is certainly being questioned
by many.
In order to make the sport even more appealing to
fans and more automotive manufacturers, given
Australia’s huge variety of makes and models
spread throughout this diverse market, the sport
has announced what it calls the Gen2 Supercar
blueprint. It is being heralded as the next stage of
major growth for the sport.
Designed to be more relevant to manufacturers,
race teams, sponsors and fans, this new stage will
see turbo charged six and four cylinder engines
permitted to take part from 2017 onwards. Major
requirements are that the car must have a full four
seat configuration, is a production model that is
publicly available for sale in Australia, has a front
mounted engine with rear wheel drive and that it is
also right hand drive. The car must accurately reflect
the look of the road car, while using the existing
Car of the Future chassis and control components,
while also being subject to engine and aerodynamic
parity rules.
Reading between the lines, of course this means
two major things, that Australia’s major motor
racing category will no longer be limited to four
door sedans, allowing two door coupés to take part,
even sports wagons would not be exempt, providing
that they are production based models. The second
major impact will be the loss of “V8” from the name
of the sport, which is most likely going to simply be
abbreviated to “Supercars”, although this is yet to
be confirmed.
There is no doubt that the sport’s hierarchy has
absorbed detailed consumer research that clearly
revealed that while core support for the sport
remains strong, opening the sport to include more
brands, engines and body types would create
increased appeal, particularly with younger fans.
Clearly, without gaining the support of new fans,
there is limited growth for any sport and it is
refreshing to see that Australia’s major motor racing
category has recognised this.
The sport’s powerbrokers will not compromise on
three factors that make all motor racing appealing,
the noise, the speed and the competitive racing.
“It is imperative to keep the sport relevant to the
current environment, to keep it entertaining and
to ensure that it is viable for the race teams. The
current climate in world motorsport is absolutely
clear. Manufacturers want a choice in what they
go racing with, otherwise they won’t participate.
They want their DNA represented and so do we.
We will not compromise our DNA – fast, loud and
fierce racing,” V8 Supercars CEO James Warburton
stated when announcing the next growth phase for
the sport.
Taking the v8,

The V8 Supercar strategy implemented in 1996
proved to be immensely successful as Australia’s
love affair with high powered V8 engines continued
unabated. In recent years, substantial shifts in the
popularity of V8 engined cars, combined with ever
rising fuel costs, saw the market change significantly
as it has all over the world. In many ways it has
become somewhat of a back to the future concept
for Australian motor racing, as our older readers
would fondly remember the Group A era, when all
manner of global and local manufacturers, car types
and engines were competing in our premier touring
car racing category.
There is no doubt that this bold new step will take
Australian motorsport into a new and exciting era,
the plan being to accurately represent the cars
that we are driving or want to drive on our roads,
out there competing for market share by winning
races and championships. The new changes, if done
correctly, have the potential to bring unprecedented
marketing investment and public support to Australian
motorsport.

This month’s Member's Ride comes to us from Greg at Autosport Engineering in New South Wales. This unique Subaru WRX STI 22B is one of only 5 that landed in Australia making it a very rare and sought after vehicle.
In 1998, Subaru of Japan produced a wide body, coupe WRX STI called the "22B STI" produced between March and August 1998. The 22B was used to commemorate both Subaru's 40th anniversary as well as the third consecutive manufacturer's title for Subaru in the FIA World Rally Championship. On the release of the sales, all 400 Japanese units sold out in under an hour. Another 24 were produced for export markets - 16 for the UK, along with another 5 for Australia, and 3 prototypes.
The 22B has the EJ22 engine meaning the displacement was increased from 1,994cc to 2,212cc., producing 280hp. This car was finished in a unique blue paint scheme and has a fender flared wide body taken from the Peter Stevens designed WRC car, widening the width by 80 mm. The car has a unique hood, front and rear fenders, a WRC-inspired front bumper and a unique adjustable rear wing.
Greg uses the car for racing competition and it has been run at Bathurst, Phillip Island and Lakeside tracks. The car is also driven very sparingly on weekends. Certainly a very impressive ride and one of the most sought after Subaru’s ever produced.
If you think your ride has what it takes to be published in the Ignition magazine, please email your details to the editor at [email protected]. Ensure you include the subject line as ‘Member's Ride’. We look forward to featuring your ride!

What was once a largely mechanical device on wheels, has developed into a multi-level high-tech computer on wheels.
The industry has battled to keep up with technology and as a result, there is now a skills shortage in diagnostics and troubleshooting.
Problem analysis and diagnostics in the motor industry has become highly sophisticated and specialised. Most technicians and workshop owners are fully aware of this, but unfortunately, the average motor vehicle owner is not.
This is where the diagnostic process starts – with the vehicle owner.
It is the responsibility of workshops to educate their customers about the diagnostic skills required to resolve tricky issues in order to buy the time needed to work on cars, as well as preparing their owners for the chain of communication which must flow between workshop and owner.
In a legacy from a by-gone era, too many motorists still believe that they are entitled to a free quote following a five-minute inspection every time they bring their car in for repair. The days of ‘can you just have a quick look at this’ are long gone.
Try inviting a plumber into your house to tell you what might be wrong with your blocked toilet without them first telling you how much the visit will cost, and that any repairs and components will cost even more. Try asking your Doctor for a quick check-over to make sure you are not coming down with something sinister – you’ll get a bill as you walk out the door.
It seems that contrary to the rules, which are unbreakable in all other trades and professions, the notion that a car workshop will happily just take a look at a vehicle at no cost is very wrong.
The mantra which must be followed by all workshops is simple – no money = no working on the vehicle.
With the number of electrical components and electronic circuits in a modern vehicle, technicians must have an understanding of electrical theory and circuits. In saying that, you don’t have to become an electronic engineer, but you do need to understand these circuits.
Electrical and electronic diagnostics are impossible without the correct diagnostic equipment, vehicle data and information but this is not always easy, or cheap.
No workshop can be so generous that it can afford to charge only for labour and throw in the huge investment on diagnostic equipment or data for nothing.
Additional costs must be passed on to customers when dealing with any repair job that demands diagnosis or research, or access to data.
Typical electrical test equipment required for fault diagnosis can include scan tools, electrical connector test equipment, digital multimeters and oscilloscopes, and there are many other specialised tools and equipment.
A shotgun approach to vehicle repair is no longer possible. Without a systematic fault finding diagnostic sequence or procedure, a technician has little chance of fixing a modern vehicle in a timely and cost effective fashion.
