Dear Section Members: Happy (belated) 2016 to all! I am hoping that I will get to see and
speak with many of you at the Combined Sections Meeting (CSM) in Anaheim, CA on February 17-20, 2016 at the Anaheim Convention Center. The educational and networking opportunities are diverse and I refer everyone to the CSM website at http://www.apta.org/CSM/. If you haven’t registered – it’s not too late! The programming is outstanding this year and I’m certain you can find numerous topics of interest. CSM truly remains the leading educational conference and career-building event of the year in physical therapy.
As I mentioned in the October Newsletter, I would also like to highlight a new event that OUR SECTION is hosting this year. We will hold a “Coffee Meet and Greet” in the Anaheim Marriott in the Gold Key III Room. Come meet your SECTION BOARD members at this informal gathering and discuss current topics, the state of OUR SECTION and if interested, come learn how to get involved while enjoying a bit of caffeine. The Cardiovascular & Pulmonary Section is finalizing a new strategic plan and we would like to discuss the new initiatives that the Section is undertaking. I also invite you to attend our business meeting which will be held at 6:30 pm on Friday, February 19thth in the Anaheim Marriott in the Grand Ballroom F.
Please feel free to introduce yourselves and start a dialogue with me and other CVP section leaders. We are always looking for membership input. It is through strong team work that our Section will continue to grow and prosper in the future. See you in Anaheim.
Cheers, Daniel Malone PT, PhD, CC President

Letter from the CV&P Section President
January, 2016
Sonya completed her BS degree at South Dakota State University in 2001, her MPT degree at Mayo School of Health Sciences in 2003, and her tDPT degree at Temple University in 2010. She received her CCS in 2007.
Sonya has worked as a PT at Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln, NE since 2004. She splits her time between research (Movement and Neurosciences Center, Institute for Rehabilitation Science and Engineering) and patient care with a clinical focus in cardiopulmonary PT. As a researcher, she is part of a research team led by Judith M. Burnfield, PT, PhD, studying ICARE (Intelligently Controlled Assistive Rehabilitation Elliptical training system) to promote walking and fitness in
persons with physical limitations and chronic conditions. Currently they are developing the Pedi-ICARE, which is a pediatric version of the ICARE. She feels it is exciting to be involved with translational research that best serves patient’s needs by providing an accessible and affordable method of delivering cardiovascular exercise.
Sonya is passionate about clinical education and currently serves as the Student Therapy Program Leader for Madonna (2010-Present), and previously served as the Center Coordinator of Clinical Education (2009-2012). She has a faculty appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor at Creighton University and also teaches nationally for Scorebuilders.
Sonya had the opportunity to volunteer in the Dominican Republic with Creighton University in 2006. She feels it made her a better clinician by being pushed outside of her comfort zone. When working with students, Sonya stresses the importance of taking vital signs as part of the examination with every patient, given hypertension is known as a silent killer. When teaching, she finds herself frequently referencing and referring to the following article: Frese EM, Fick A, Sadowsky HS. Blood pressure measurement guidelines for physical therapists. Cardiopulm Phys Ther J. 2011;22(2):5-12.
Sonya has earned several awards during her career: 2009 Distinguished Young Alumna Award from SDSU, 2012 APTA Emerging Leader Award, 2012 Harry E. Settles Contributor of the Year Award from USD, 2013 Madonna Angel Award, 2014 Mayo School of Health Sciences Recognition of Outstanding Contribution, and 2015 Phi Kappa Phi Love of Learning Award.
Sonya sits on the board of directors for the Nebraska Foundation for Physical Therapy, the advisory council for Briar Cliff University, and is a manuscript reviewer for Cardiopulmonary Physical Therapy Journal. She thinks that it is important to give back to your local community when possible so she volunteers on Madonna’s team serving those in need at Matt Talbot’s kitchen, which provides meals to those in the community not able to afford it.
Sonya has been married to her husband, Steve, for 7 years, who is a civil engineer. They enjoy traveling and spending time with their family and friends. The next professional item on her bucket list is to finish a Wellness Coaching certification course that she’s taking through Mayo Clinic. She’s excited to find new methods to engage patients in the wellness conversation.
Please send in names of CV&P Section Members that you think should be profiled. We are looking for all types of members to be profiled, not just someone who has published a lot or has a
recognizable name. All of our section members do important work for our profession and we want to show that off. Send the name and contact info to [email protected].

Sonya Irons, PT, DPT, CCS Highlight written by: Michele Stanley, PT, DPT, GCS, CEEAA
Sonya stresses the importance of being your own health care advocate. She encourages patients, friends, family members, etc. to take a written list of
questions with them to the MD and to keep asking those important questions until they have the answers that they need.

CVP SECTION IS LOOKING FOR PICTURES
In case you haven’t checked out the newly re-designed CVP Section website, please visit today. As you see we have gotten rid of the “stock” photoshop like photos. However, we
would like to add some real photos to the website. If you have pictures of CVP PTs in action, we’d like to see if we could use them.
Please send any photos to [email protected] and we will see if we can use them. We’d like to highlight areas of CVP PT, events, etc. **Please make sure that you have any and all
appropriate consent/release forms for patients in the pictures.**
