BE CAREFUL, AND stay out of trouble, Jeff Hanson told his son, Tyler, as he left the house in late January 2015.Tyler was almost to his car when his mother, Cari, called from the doorway. Hey, come back and give me a hug! He jogged over to his mother. She was holding their black mini poodle in her arms. See, he loves you too, Cari says. Jeff and Cari would never see their son again. Tyler, 17, was driving north on Cornhusker Road at 180th Street when his Chevy Cavalier rolled, eject-ing Tyler from the car, then pinning him underneath it. He was not wearing a seatbelt. Now Tylers parents are spreading the word to click it. The money from Tylers memorial was ded-icated to raising awareness for seatbelt safety. Part of the money went to designing hugs, small seatbelt wraps. Three hundred of these wraps were created for Tylers friends and family as a reminder to be safe. The rest of the memorial money was donated to the National Safety Council.I want to prevent other parents from experiencing such a tragic loss, Jeff says. He hangs his head, barely holding back tears as he glances at his wife. Tylers parents both struggle to understand why their son didnt buckle up. Before Tyler left the classroom that Friday, Millard West English teacher Karen Palmer reminded her students to drive safely and wear their seatbelts; something she has done for the past 17 years.

They would be the last words she said to Tyler. Yet teenagers arent get-ting the message. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 45 percent of teenagers reported not buckling up as a passenger in 2013. Seatbelts reduce death chances by about half, yet 71 percent of drivers aged 15-20 killed in auto crashes were simply not pulling the safety strap. I think he (Tyler) would have been better off if he wore a seatbelt, but there is no guarantee, believes Officer Earl Johnson, who investigated the accident. Teenagers think they are invincible, Tylers friend Meghan Kocovsky says. We get away with many other things, so we think we can get away with something as simple as not wearing a seatbelt. Unfortunately, it can get you killed.Tylers parents may never know what caused him to lose control that Friday night.Honestly, dont think about yourself, but think about everyone who does give a crap about you, so buckle up for them, Kocovsky advises. For the Hansons, this statement is harrowingly too true. Their fun-loving and hard-working boy will never again rush through the front door. The Hanson house is eerily cold and silent. The pain is tangible. The Hansons hope is that one person will learn from this tragedy, and maybe it will save one life. The seatbelt wraps say, This HUG is in memory of Tyler to always buckle up, cause you cant put your arms around a memory.

A Place to Hang Your Hat

WINTERY MONTHS IN Nebraska can be a real drag. Literally. We drag the outdoors in, sludging with us mud, snow, and salt. And unfortunately, not all of us are blessed to have a mud room or even an entryway closet. This year, after your kiddos get done shoveling the driveway, give them a place to hang their sweaty hats, wet coats, and snowy gloves. Use it as a towel rack in the bath-room, or in the bedroom to hang those clothes that are always on the floor. This coat rack can add some vertical interest to an otherwise empty corner and bring some functionality to your space. And best of all, because the poles collapse, it can be easily stowed away during the summer months when your house doesn't resemble a public pool.

DIRECTIONS

1. Gather your dowels together in a bunch and space out the bottoms into an even triangle.2. Lean the dowels together and cross them about a quarter of the way down.3. Tie the jute string around one of the dowels and dab a bit of hot glue between the knot and the dowel to keep it in place. 4. Weave the jute in and around all three dowels, securing them together. This may be done easier if you have a friend holding them in place while you wrap.5. Tie off the jute when you

are finished, again securing it with a dab of hot glue.6. Give the jute a cleaner and more dramatic look by wrapping a single string up each dowel, securing it with some hot glue.7. Hang the s-hooks on the jute bindings.

STEVE AND JENNY Minino sit at the table on a Sunday morning sipping coffee while their kidsKenedi, age 7, and Zachary, age 6sit on the couch with iPads. Its a not-so-typical morning in the life of this goal-oriented family.Kenedi attends first grade at Sagewood Elementary School. She has played soccer for four years, started playing basketball this winter, and is in the Xcel Bronze class at Premier Gymnastics.Zachary, who goes by Meatball, is in kindergarten at Sagewood. He earned a white belt with stripes at karate, but now plays football, soccer, and basketball.All these activities with the kids required a balancing act for Jenny and Steve.It was busy, Jenny says. A lot of times it was OK, you take Meatball, Ive got Kenedi, and well meet back here in two hours.Steve, a real estate agent with NP Dodge, works a lot of hours. He works nine to five, he works through dinner, after dinner, on vacation. Then, of course, theres weekends.Weekends are huge for realtors, says Jenny. Thats when they hold open houses.

This meant Steve couldnt spend much time with the children. A year ago, Steve created a way to incorpo-rate more family time into his lifebring his wife into the business.I just got so busy that I needed Jenny to handle some of those details that I couldnt handle anymore, Steve says.Details such as marketing and database inputting. With two people focused on one work goal, they became more productive. This also satisfied a longtime dream of working together, one that needed time to develop.Its tough to begin with because as a real estate agent, you are an independent contractor so you are respon-sible for insurance and things, Jenny says.It was a reality Steve knew well. His mother, Deb Hopkins, has worked in real estate for 30 years, and his grandfather sold real estate. Extended family members also work in the same business.I never wanted to work in real estate growing up, says Steve, who has degrees in culinary arts and hotel management. My love was always cooking.Nine years ago, Steve worked in Las Vegas. A phone call with his mother led Steve back home.


She said, Well, if you dont mind the hours, why dont you come back and join the team. Steve says. I think ultimately she realized I would be in real estate, but she wanted it to be my decision, not her legacy.There are days when Steve and Jenny need to pick up the kids then return to work. Their solution? Bring the kids to the office, where they keep a supply of crayons and paper to keep them occupied. The other employees, some of them family members, dont mind.Zac has a big reason why he likes

going to the office with Mom and Dad.I like getting candy!Steve laughs. A lot of people in the office keep candy at their desk. The kids know who they are.Kenedi likes visiting Nonni, she and Zacs nickname for Deb.I leave notes for her, she says. I stick them on her desk, on her chair, on her computerThis philosophy of family-friendly business means a lot to the couple, espe-cially Steve, who grew up attend-ing open houses with his mother.

Steve says, I used to run around and turn on lights. These guys havent quite done that for me yet, but they will.The youngsters have also gone on client calls with them, but the Mininos are mindful of which clients will accept their children being around. Fortunately, most of their clients are family-friendly.Ive always said if a client is bothered by our kids, maybe they arent the right client for us, Steve says.Working while the kids are around saves the Mininos money. The average cost of day care in Nebraska is more than $5,000 annually. This lifestyle allows the parents to continue working while keeping the focus on their family.During the school year Im able to work around their school schedule, Jenny says. Its nice because it allows me to be with them when they have a teacher inservice or something. Were so fortunate that we have so many family members who are in the industry that they can step up and cover for me when needed.As the Mininos business grows, this lifestyle of working with family becomes more important.I would say we are busier now, Steve says. Its fair to say were working smarter, not harder. What is nice was that we still have time for a family dinner at least three times a week. We didnt have that before.Sitting at a kitchen table that now is used for eating at instead of looking at, Jenny looks over at Kenedi, who lays on the couch playing a game.Are we grooming them to be realtors, too? Jenny asks.Kenedi shakes her head no as Steve laughs.Probably, but they just dont know it yet.

INGREDIENTS 1/2 Cup diced zucchini 1/2 Cup sliced mushrooms 1/2 Cup diced tomatoes 1/2 Cup chopped baby greens (such as spinach, Swiss chard, or kale) 1 egg, lightly beaten 1/2 Cup egg whites (about 2 egg whites), lightly beaten 2 Tbsp low-fat (1%) milk 2 Tbsp chopped fresh herbs (such as basil, thyme, sage, or parsley)PREPARATION1. Preheat oven to 400F.2. Heat a 4- to 6-inch ovenproof omelette pan (stain-less steel or cast iron) on high heat until hot. Remove from heat and spray with nonstick cooking spray. Reduce heat to medium, add vegetables and saut until caramelized, about 3 to 5 minutes.3. In a small bowl, lightly whisk the egg, egg whites, and milk. Add egg mixture to the pan and reduce heat to medium-low. Cook eggs for 2 minutes without touching.4. Sprinkle herbs over top of egg mixture and bake in oven for 5 to 8 minutes, or until eggs set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
