Dear friends in Christ, With grateful hearts we welcome another new year, 2017! We have been blessed to celebrate the Christmas season reminding us of God’s saving grace that abounds each day of life we share on this earth. The baby Jesus born in Bethlehem some 2000 years ago was, is, and always will be the Sav-ior of this sin darkened world. We now are privileged as the body of Christ to look forward to op-portunities for continued spiritual growth and for living out our faith in daily life as children of God who bear the light of Christ. It just so happens that we at OSLC will be hosting one of those amazing opportunities to grow in our faith and in our understanding of what it means to be mission minded followers of Jesus when Pastor, Teacher and Author, Bill Moberly joins us for a regional seminar, The Harvest Connection, on Saturday, January 28th from 8:30 to 1 pm. Southwest Iowa churches and community members are invited to join us when Bill will help us explore three critical questions: The Call of the Word, in particular what does the Bible says about global missions? The Need in the World, in particular what remains to be done in response to Jesus’ Great Commission to Go and Make disciples of all nations? and what does this mean for your life and your congregation, in particular the practical, personal and inspirational ways of making a difference? Bill Moberly is Founder and Director of Awakening Lives to World Missions. He is Director of Outreach and Development for China Service Ventures. He is author of Igniting a Passion for Mis-sions. You are encouraged to participate. Volunteers are needed. OSLC will cover the $10 cost of your study materials and the lunch. A sign-up sheet is posted in the entryway later in December. You are welcome to visit with me to learn more. FYI - Pastor Bill Moberly will also be present at OSLC on Sunday, January 29th providing a mes-sage on global missions and will continue to teach us more about igniting a passion for missions during the Sunday School hour in the chapel. I am excited that Our Saviour’s Lutheran will be able to host this valuable mission learning experi-ence. I hope to see you there. New Year’s Blessings, Pastor Doug

Communion Stewards of OSLC On December 18th we commissioned additional ministry team participants (Communion Stewards) who are available to offer the Sacrament of Holy Communion to our long term home bound, to our adults who are temporarily shut-in due to weather challenges or because of short term health related

reasons. These men and women are an extension of the sacramental ministry of OSLC. These are gifts our gracious Lord offers to each of us and in turn we are privileged to offer Holy Communion for those who are not able to join us in worship on Sundays when we gather at the Lord’s table for Holy Communion . Marlene Englin, Lisa Frederiksen, Shellie Madsen, Dan Smith and Lorri Thy-gesen have joined the Communion Steward ministry team. Other ministry team members include Barb Christensen, Diana Deist, Jeanne Schwab, Lee & Norma Nielsen and Pastor Doug. If you are

in need of Home Communion please contact a Communion Steward or Pastor Doug.

2017 Regional Meals From The Heartland Mobile Hunger Fight The Audubon Area Ministerial Association has voted to once again begin the process of sponsoring what will be the third Regional Meals From The Heartland Mobile Hunger Fight now scheduled at the Audubon Iowa National Guard Armory for Friday, March 10, 2017. In March of 2013 we hosted the first regional mobile hunger fight which included 622 volunteers of all ages and packed a total of 115,242 meals after raising $23,553. In April of 2015 we hosted the second regional mobile hunger fight which included 660 volunteers of all ages and packed a total of 161,352 meals after raising $32,728. The initial fundraising goal for the 2017 MFTH Mobile Hunger Fight is $25,000. We pres-ently have $1450 in our MFTH account. Lisa Frederiksen has once again volunteered to be our treas-urer. All contributions are tax deductible and can be given to Lisa at the Audubon County Courthouse or to your local Audubon Area Ministerial clergy member. The next MFTH Mobile Hunger Fight meeting will be held at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church on Monday, January 16th at 6 pm. We appreci-ate all volunteers to help coordinate the hunger fight! If you have any questions please contact Pastor Doug Opp at 712-56302625 or Pastor Steven Frock at 712-268-2660.

New Member Classes

Pastor Doug will be offering new member

classes once again after the new year. February 12th & 19th are the next available

classes, meeting at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel.

The Wednesday services are recorded on DVDs and may be checked out from the Church

office.

Congregational Meal Guidelines Lenten Suppers, Advent Suppers, etc.

*There is a budgeted amount for expenses incurred for Congregational meals such as soup sup-pers. *Please charge all supplies (soup ingredients, sandwiches, bars, drinks, etc.) at Audubon Foods to OSLC. You will be asked to sign a charge slip. Along with signing your name, indicate what you are purchasing supplies for (such as “Soup Supper”). This allows Pam to know where to categorize the expense as other groups also charge during the month. *If you need to purchase supplies somewhere other than Audubon Foods and pay for them per-sonally, please turn in a receipt for reimbursement within one week of the event. *If you have a free-will donation basket, the proceeds will go into the non-designated Memorial Fund unless a specific need has been pre-determined. *Since there is a budgeted expense for these meals, no one should need to incur personal expense when volunteering to help. Please consider your volunteer time as your donation.

As a reminder, on Sunday

mornings general announce-ments and Temple Talk will

begin prior to 9:00 a.m. in order for our worship service to begin

at 9:00 a.m. or shortly after.

for our brothers and sisters in Christ at the First Presbyterian Church.

Prayer Shawl Ministry The Prayer Shawl Ministry was organized in 2006. Since then many have been

blessed with a prayer shawl. Those blessed were not only from our congregation but many others. Thanks to all who have donated money and also yarn for this ministry. A monthly feature from the OSLC Wellness Ministry Team

I heard on the radio the other day that we gain a pound a week between Halloween and the end of the year. That is almost 10 pounds. While that may not sound too oppressive, if you add the cumulative effect, it is 50 pounds in five years! What is your ideal weight? It depends on a range of factors, including age, sex, body

type, bone density, muscle-fat-ratio, overall general health, and height. There are several ways to determine ideal body weight is the BMI. One way is to calculate the BMI. You need to know your height and weight. Entering these on any of the online tools will calculate the BMI. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), BMI can be classified as follows: 15.9 and under is severely thin 18.5 is underweight 18.5 to 24.9 is normal healthy weight 25 to 29.9 is overweight 30 to 39.9 is obese 40 and above is morbidly obese.

The short comings of the BMI are that it doesn’t take into account a person’s measurements so that an Olympic athlete of the same height and weight as a sedentary individual will have the same BMI. People may have dif-ferent bone densities affecting their weight which wouldn’t be reflected in BMI. While a BMI is informational it isn’t tremendously useful in predicting obesity or cardiovascular disease risk. It may be more useful and practical to look at waist-hip ratio. WHR is more predictive of cardiovascular disease. The waist is measured at its narrowest point, and if there is no narrow point, it is measured approximately 1 inch above the belly button. Hips are measured at the widest point of the buttocks. The waist measurement is divided by the hip measurement. For men: Below 0.9 indicates a very low risk of cardiovascular problems From 0.9 to 0.99 suggests a moderate risk Above 1 implies a high risk.

For women: Below 0.8 means a very low risk of cardiovascular problems From 0.8 to 0.89 indicates a moderate risk 0.9 or above suggests a high risk of cardiovascular problems.

Women with a WHR below 0.8 have been found to be healthier, with a lower risk of different types of cancer, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and infertility. Men whose WHR is 9 or less have the same benefits as women with a low WHR, and men with a higher WHR, have similar health risks to those of their female counterparts. The third measurement to consider is the body fat ratio. This is more difficult to measure and can be done with calipers, a machine specific to measuring body fat, or a submersion technique usually done in research projects. When striving for a healthy body, it is important to factor in body composition and shape, gender and activity levels, and to use accurate tools to evaluate each aspect. To become healthier, people are urged to reduce body fat by eating healthy and exercising, including resistance training to build up lean body composition. Barb Jacobsen

New Member Classes

Pastor Doug will be offering new member

classes, meeting at 1:00 p.m. in the chapel.
