Welcome to our vibrant Catholic Learning Communities! Our Catholic Elementary Schools have a proud tradition of providing an excellent education to our students. From the time you walk in the front door, you will know it is a Catholic School. We teach the BC Curriculum and integrate the teachings of our faith throughout the day and year. Many special school ceremonies and gatherings revolve around the liturgical calendar as we teach our students about the importance of Advent, Christmas, Lent, Easter, All Saints day, Family day, St. Valentines and St. Patrick’s days, and sacramental preparation. Students in our Catholic Schools learn about the treasure and significance of the Mass while participating in Mass regularly. Staff pray together with their colleagues each morning and before meetings. They also work with our priest and teach our students to pray. Our priest is in the school regularly making connections with students and staff, often helping at school functions. Our students participate on volleyball, basketball, soccer and cross country teams and each school has a strong arts program. Many of our schools have smart boards and interactive technology to assist staff in providing engaging lessons. We have an exciting iGeneration Tech Plan to ensure students and staff have current technology to learn the skills they need to be successful in the 21st century.

Parents have many ways to get involved in their child’s Catholic Education. They can be on the School Council which plays an important role in the governance of our schools. They can also choose to be part of the Parent Support Group, or volunteer to share their gifts and talents as a tradesperson. All can join the many who pray daily for our staff and students.

We are proud to have three Catholic Elementary Schools in Prince George and others in Dawson Creek, Smithers, Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert. The 79 Catholic Schools in BC make up 31% of the Independent Schools. As a Group One Independent School, we receive 50% of the funding allo-cated to public schools to educate a student in BC. We receive 100% of what the Ministry allocates to public schools to support students with special education needs. In our Prince George Diocese, we have one of the lowest tuitions of Independent Schools in BC and are proud to compensate our professional staff at 84% of the public school salary grid.

Enrolment numbers for Independent Schools in BC in 2012-2013 have increased from 73,403 to 76,415, an increase of 4.1% over last year. The average enrolment increase over the past decade has been 1.5% per annum. Independent schools have seen increased student enrolment each year since 1977-78. The last time annual enrolment growth exceeded 4% was in 1997-98 when the increase was 4.7%. (Statistics from FISABC newsletter Dec. 2012)

The Ministry of Education has enacted a program to ensure that students in our BC schools are safe and have strategies to deal with bullying. The program will include training for 15,000 educators in

public and independent schools to identify and address threats to students proactively. A new website has been activated that provides helpful information to students and parents on how to deal with bullying, and contains an anonymous reporting tool for students at www.ReportBullyingBC.ca.

Independent schools have been given the opportunity to participate fully in the provincial antibul-lying strategy. During the next few months, training sessions will be held throughout the province so that two representatives in each school will be equipped to help victims of bullying. FISA BC is grateful to the BC government for extending anti-bullying support to independent schools so that all schools in the province will have the tools to support victims of bullying and additional means to keep our students safe.

Grade seven graduates of our Learning Communities enter their teen years with a solid foundation and understanding of their faith. In addition, they develop a network of friends and connections in the community while acquiring a solid academic foundation. This Christ centered foundation enables our youth to serve as disciples and to witness their faith in a global society.

On behalf of all of our Catholic Schools in the Diocese I would like to express our gratitude to Bishop Gerald Wiesner, O.M.I. for his 20 years of faithful service as our Shepherd to our Catholic Schools.

If you would like to learn more about our Catholic Schools, please contact the school principals for a tour and visit our school links at www.pgdiocese.bc.ca or contact me anytime [email protected] or 250-964-5642.

I am proud to serve as the Superintendent of our 8 Catholic Schools – vibrant Catholic Learning Communities.

The first documented evidence of Catholic education in the Diocese of Prince George shows that Bishop Bunoz, O.M.I., with the Oblate Fathers, Sisters of St. Joseph of Toronto and Sisters of the Child Jesus began a school at Babine in 1914. This first school was soon followed by schools in Fort St. James and Prince Rupert in 1916.

Bishop Jordan, O.M.I., with the Sisters of St. Ann, Sisters of St. Joseph of Hamilton and Sisters of Providence opened schools in Prince George, Fort St. James and Dawson Creek.

In 1956, Bishop O’Grady, O.M.I., undertook the mission of building a system of Catholic Schools to serve the aboriginal and non-aboriginal students of this missionary diocese. Assisted by Communities of Religious, his determination resulted in the birth of the Frontier Apostolate, a movement of dedicated Catholic volunteers from around the world.

Our Catholic Schools span the Diocese from Dawson Creek, near the Alberta border, to Prince Rupert on the coast. Today our schools are staffed by committed lay women and men, several of whom attended our schools in their youth.

The Catholic Independent Schools of the Diocese of Prince George share in the saving mission of the Church by fostering faith formation and academic excellence. With Jesus Christ as our model, and within the context of our faith community, we strive to educate our youth in a holistic way. In collaboration with their families, we support their

spiritual, intellectual, physical and emotional growth. This Christ centered foundation enables our youth to serve as

disciples and to witness their faith in a global society.

WITH STRONG ROOTS WE STRIVE FOR NEW HEIGHTS

A SCHOOL ON A MISSION

At Immaculate Conception School you will find a culture of faith based academic excellence with a keen focus on individual learner support. This is a culture in which the school and its excellent staff foster morals, values, and virtues in each child based on a strong sense of Christianity.

A SCHOOL WITH A VISIONIC is in its first year of implementing a new five year vision document that was developed in consultation with the whole school community. We are so excited about much that will be happening in the coming months and years. A new office renovation is planned for this summer and plans are being developed to renovate and extend the present school to better accommodate all of our great programs. There will be a special focus on the integration of technology, a new learning centre to support individual needs and learning styles and a multipurpose space that will also be home to our band program.

A SCHOOL THAT SERVES OTHERSCentral to our mission at Immaculate Conception School is the active participation of staff, students, families and friends in reaching out to those in need both locally and internationally. In the past year alone, we have supported the Giving Tree at the Festival of Trees, the Terry Fox Foundation, and built wells and supported education and agriculture in Uganda though the excellent work of the Prince George based NUDF organization.

A SCHOOL WITH A FOCUSFully qualified teachers and support staff help to deliver the complete BC curriculum that includes a strong academic focus, an extensive learning support program, physical education, music and band, a wide range of extra-curricular options in sports, drama and the arts, year-book, and leadership. Immaculate Conception School has an amazing Parent Support Group who deliver a top notch hot lunch program, a range of fun community events and support the educational opportu-nities for all students. We love the active role that parents play in their child’s education at our school.

A SCHOOL STRONG IN ‘SPIRIT’With just over 200 students in Grades K-7, the school still has a smaller school feel and the importance of belonging to a special family-oriented community is stressed! Families of all backgrounds are welcome at the school to experience a faith that is alive and where the

spirit is strong. Immaculate Conception School is a mission driven school and exciting things are always happening!!!!

The school is now accepting registrations for the 2013-2014 school year. For more information contact the school office at 250-964-4362 or check out our website at www.icschool.ca.

Catholic Schools are Healthy and HappyThe three Catholic schools in Prince George have been involved with a new Prince George based program entitled Kids Helping Kids, Healthy Is Happy. This program is a partnership program be-tween Action Schools BC, the City of Prince George, School District 57, and independent schools across our city. The aim of the program is

• To promote ways for youth to be more active and to encourage a healthy diet• To empower school leadership students to organize and lead activities in their respective schools• To provide all students with an opportunity to live healthier lives

Student leaders from Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s and Immaculate Conception joined other student leaders from Prince George in a recent training day seminar and learned all kinds of great ways to promote healthy living in their schools. During the day they were treated to a special talk by Dr. Pat Turner, our very own Prince George Olympian. Each group is now busily working to achieve the program goals in their respective schools.

Sacred Heart students enjoying healthy activities.

Immaculate Conception students enjoy meeting Dr. Pat Turner.

The Spirit of GivingOpen Wide Our Hearts of FaithIn Matthew’s gospel we read, “The King will reply, ‘I tell you, whenever you did this for one of the least important of these followers of mine, you did it to me’.” (Matthew 25:40). The three Catholic Schools of Prince George live this mission statement as part of their daily work. This verse supports how students interact with each other. It underpins the value based education you will find at each of the schools. In a very real way, the students of Sacred Heart, St. Mary’s and Immaculate Conception participate in many activities to support those less fortunate than themselves here in Prince George, across Canada and in various areas worldwide. This year, all three schools were a key part of the Knights of Columbus Giving Tree entry at the annual Festival of Trees. Students raised funds and gathered clothing, gift cards, and food items to support local charities. The face of Jesus is certainly reflected in these extraordinary acts of giving.

Immaculate Conception students collect donations, food and clothing for St. Vincent de Paul .
