A couple of years ago, the Wall Street Journal published findings from an academic study on what they called “the Catholic school difference.” The study uncovered significant and powerful findings about the social and emotional development of children in Catholic schools. Specifically, the study revealed the success of Catholic schools in their commitment to instilling character in children, especially in regards to self-discipline. The results, they found, manifested in students with higher academic achievement, greater self-control and far fewer behavior incidences.
At St. John Berchmans, not only do we believe in the mission of our Catholic schools, we see on a daily basis the Catholic school difference. Our commitment to peace and kindness is not just a scripted part of our social emotional curriculum. It is a way of life. Our students don’t just read about heroes of service and sacrifice. They are heroes of service and sacrifice. Our commitment to educating children with compassion and with a focus on fostering core values of integrity, justice, fairness, empathy, humility, respect for others, trustworthiness and generosity truly does make a difference.
This week, we will celebrate our Catholic school difference at SJB. Our Science and Social Studies Fair, Career Day, Family Feast and Open House, Spirit Day and our celebrations of the 100th day of school, will energize our school community this coming week and showcase some of the great things about our students, teachers and school families.

“Go make disciples.” Here are some practical ways to practice evangelization in our lives each day. In the silence that was discussed last week, reflect on your own experience of faith, of a God moment in your life. God moments happen all the time. Often we miss them because we don’t allow ourselves time at the end of our day to silently reflect on what happened during the day. Share your faith with a close friend or spouse. Then, when the opportunity (otherwise known as the Holy Spirit) to talk with someone else about faith occurs, you will be ready.
Showing gratitude to God and others often, will increase the attitude of gratitude, make others happy and increase awareness of God’s presence in our lives. If you are happy and at peace let your face say that, through a smile.
Always finding time for God during the day either by attending Mass, reading about God or the saints, talking to him or about him with someone, strengthens our faith and gives us the courage to be bold (in a positive way) about our faith. How proud are we to admit that we are Catholic and how do we manifest that faith to others in our daily lives? Evangelization is about announcing the good news of Jesus Christ in the way we live. Make the choice to be a disciple. Gently share your faith and be kind. Have an amazing week.

Hace un par de años, el periódico Wall Street Journal publicó hallazgos de un estudio académico sobre lo que llamaron “la diferencia de la escuela católica”. El estudio descubrió hallazgos significativos y poderosos sobre el desarrollo social y emocional de los niños en las escuelas católicas. Específicamente, el estudio reveló el éxito que tienen las escuelas católicas en su compromiso de inculcar valores en los niños, especialmente en lo que se refiere a la autodisciplina. Los resultados se manifestaron en estudiantes con mayor rendimiento académico, mayor autocontrol y muchas menos incidencias de mala conducta.

“Vayan a hacer discípulos”. Aquí hay algunas maneras de practicar la evangelización en nuestras vidas diariamente. La semana pasada se discutió que en el silencio se reflexiona sobre su propia experiencia de fe, de un momento de Dios en su vida. Los momentos de Dios pasan todo el tiempo. A menudo los extrañamos porque no nos damos tiempo al final de nuestro día para reflexionar en silencio sobre lo que sucedió durante el día. Comparta su fe con un amigo cercano o cónyuge. Entonces, cuando se presente la oportunidad (también conocida como el Espíritu Santo) de hablar con alguien más acerca de la fe, estará listo. Mostrando gratitud a Dios y a los demás a menudo aumentará la actitud de gratitud, alegrará a los demás y aumentará la conciencia de la presencia de Dios en nuestras vidas. Si usted es feliz y está en paz, demuéstrelo en su rostro y sonría. School NewsOPEN HOUSE & SCIENCE FAIRSt. John Berchmans School is hosting an Open House + Science Fair and History Fair on Sunday, January 26th, following the 9:45am Family Mass. The Sunday Open House will be less formal with no formal presentation, but our Director of Admissions and parent ambassadors will be on hand in the Resource Room to answer questions. All families are invited to walk through the school to view each classroom’s science experiments, social studies projects and meet the dedicated PK-8th grade teachers. The students have been working hard to learn about the Solar System, animal habitats, the Scientific Method and significant moments in history like the
Women’s Suffrage Movement and D-Day. All Are Welcome!
