Pastor’s Letter September 3/4 Dear Parish Family, If you ask most Catholics what is the most difficult part of being a pastor, they will probably say "raising money." While this is not an easy task, I might describe it more as being reliably unpopular rather than difficult. A far more difficult task is the role of encouraging, inviting, and inspiring people to become involved in the work and ministries of the parish. As evidence, think of this: While a list of those who regularly support our parish financially numbers more than 550 families, there are less than 100 parishioners sharing their time and talent with the community. Why is this so? One fairly obvious reason is that giving financially takes less time. Being part of a parish ministry can take more time and effort. I would like to offer here the old proverb that “many hands make light work” to encourage you to see that even the most demanding tasks are easier when we all pitch in. Not only that, but in most ministries, those who participate always say they receive far more than they give. A second reason might begin “O Lord I am not worthy!” For some reason, many people seem to believe that only a few special souls can help with ministries like Eucharistic minister, lector, or ministers to the sick. While some ministries do require a bit of talent (like playing a musical instrument), most ministries just require a willing spirit. Ministries can be learned. Ministries enhance our God-given talents and develop us spiritually and personally. A third reason has to do with the feeling some have that we already have enough help. Hardly! We are always scrambling for enough catechists, singers, lectors, ministers, and servers. We are sometimes our own worst enemy here. Every community that uses volunteers has to deal with those who want to keep the ministry small and who fear that they may lose something if they welcome others. Short reminder: Jesus chose 12 and gave them the job of welcoming everyone else to be disciples. A community that does not grow in its number of ministers is stuck in a terrible rut. This week, as we celebrate our first ministry fair in many years, we mark a return to something that is absolutely central to the life of a church. We are not only called to welcome all but to serve them and to invite everyone to become involved in the ministry of the church. Were someone to ask: “So what is your role in your church?” I would hope you would be able to say more than: “I go there.” I hope that, in great or small ways, you would have some sense of participation in the life of the community. Take time this week and next to explore our ministry fair. A wonderful opportunity is waiting for you. Sincerely yours in Christ,

Celebrate the great legacy of Catholic education on the East End!

School will be back in session for the thirty-fifth year of Our Lady of the

Hamptons Regional Catholic School on September 7. At this time, there is space

available in grade 3, as well as in the pre-school. Information packets and

registration materials are available at the school now, leading toward September

2016 enrollment.

Our Lady of the Hamptons, the East End’s premier Catholic school,

chartered by the State of New York, accredited by the Middle States Association of

Colleges and Schools is also recipient of a Blue Ribbon for Excellence from the

U.S. Department of Education. OLH serves parishes and communities extending

The all-new revitalized Pre-school program at OLH is an important step in the

Catholic Daughters of the Americas is one of the largest women’s organizations in the world, and has been in existence since 1903.

The Legion of Mary

The purpose of the Legion of Mary is two-fold: The spiritual development of its members and advancing the reign of Christ through Our Lady. The Legion of Mary was founded in Dublin, Ireland in September of 1921. It is a lay catholic organization whose members are giving service to the Church on a voluntary basis in almost every country. The object of the Legion of Mary is the Glory of God through the holiness of its members developed by prayer and active co-operation in Mary’s and the Church’s work. We are interested in forming a praesidium in this parish. A praesidium is a unit of the Legion of Mary which holds a weekly meeting where prayer is intermingled with reports of their work and discussion. Enter the Holy Door of Mercy Sacred Hearts has been chosen as one of four churches in the Diocese

of Rockville Centre to have a Holy Door of Mercy through which

pilgrims may obtain the same blessings as if they were to visit the

jubilee door at St. Peter’s

Basilica in Rome.

One may walk through this door

at any time but during this Holy

Year of Mercy we will celebrate

Eucharistic Adoration on

Thursday from the conclusion of the noon mass until

Benediction at 4:00 PM. We will also have confessions

during this time and our Spanish community will pray the

Chaplet of Divine Mercy from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM. We call

Parishioners who support this time of prayer our Anchors of

Mercy. If you are willing to join them please just come any

Faith and Justice

What does it take to be Jesus’s disciple? In Sunday’s

Gospel Jesus provides three answers: “Hate” your family and your own life. Carry your own cross.

Renounce all your possessions. How is it this man has any followers?! Do we simply ignore these

directives or water them down? Being a disciple is tough. It’s counter-cultural. But the first reading

points out that earthly life can be tough, too. It can be quite burdensome. What Jesus is actually

offering us is freedom from such weighty attachments, freedom like that of Onesimus when Paul

liberates him from slavery with the Good News of Jesus. Jesus’s response to the question of

discipleship is simply this: Set your priorities straight. God first, not people, not things. From that all

good things can flow.

Director :: Jennifer Ferrantino Happy August!! I hope and pray that this summer has relaxed and refreshed you! It is time to prepare for the new religious ed year! Classes begin Sunday, September 25 OR Wednesday September 28. Please make sure your registration forms are in early, there will be

NO registration of the First day of class. Registration forms have been mailed out if you did not receive one please call the office. Calling all First grade families please contact the religious ed office to register your child. We begin classes in First grade for the two year preparation for First Communion in Second grade. As we prepare for the Fall we will be in need of additional help, on Sundays we will need assistance in grades 4th, 5th and also need help in hallway monitoring. On Wednesday afternoons we will need help in 5th grade. If you feel called to help please contact us. La Enseñanza de la Iglesia sobre el Derecho al Trabajo y la Importancia de los Sindicatos - El trabajo es «el fundamento sobre el que se forma la vida familiar, la cual es un derecho natural y una vocación del hombre». El trabajo asegura los medios de subsistencia y garantiza el proceso educativo de los hijos. Es necesario para ello que las empresas, las organizaciones profesionales, los sindicatos y el Estado se hagan promotores de políticas laborales que no perjudiquen, sino favorezcan el núcleo familiar desde el punto de vista ocupacional. El Magisterio reconoce la función fundamental desarrollada por los sindicatos de trabajadores, cuya razón de ser consiste en el derecho de los trabajadores a formar asociaciones o uniones para defender los intereses vitales de los hombres empleados en las diversas profesiones. Sacramentos para Adultos - Las clases para adultos que no han recibido los sacramentos de Confirmación o Comunión o aún no son Bautizados, son los jueves, a las 7 PM en la escuelita en East Hampton o los domingos, a las 10 de la mañana en el Apostolado Hispano en Southampton. Estas clases son para jóvenes y adultos de 18 o más años. La clase en East Hampton comienza el 8 de septiembre y en Southampton el domingo 25.

En junio el curso será el domingo, 25 de Septiembre. Favor de llevar la copia del acta de nacimiento del niño. Bautizos en Southampton serán, el 2 de octubre, el 6 de noviembre y el 4 de diciembre, el diciembre, el 1º de enero y el 5 de febrero.

El Asesor de Inmigración de Caridades Católicas En el Apostolado Hispano en Southampton el jueves, 8 de septiembre, de las 2:00 a las 5:00 PM. Requisitos para el Bautismo de un Niño Curso: Para bautizar a su hijo, es necesario que los padres y padrinos asistan al curso pre-bautismal. Padrinos: Debe escoger a los padrinos conscientes de los requisitos. Los padrinos tienen que ser católicos bautizados, confirmados y que han hecho su Primera Comunión y deben poder comulgar. El padrino (madrina) debe ser un(a) soltero(a) o debe ser casado por la iglesia.
