POST-SUMMER CHALLENGES
With any luck, summer delights will continue a while past last weekend's Labor Day: refreshing recreation (with maybe an occasional swim) or enjoyable relaxation on the deck (with tasty outdoor grilling). Truth is, for some of us, this year's Labor Day came way too early. With many schools back in session for a while already, mealtimes and driving schedules
needed readjustment to coordinate youth sports with adult commitments. Some religious education and parish programs resumed, too. No surprise, then, that this weekend's scriptures sound a little like post-summer challenges. For instance, Wisdom reminds us that believers in God can never be content with timid deliberations and unsure plans. Paul
challenges longtime friend and follower Philemon to let the good you do be voluntary. Jesus instructs great crowds traveling with him--including us--on three things necessary for all true disciples to accomplish. On this early autumn

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Eastern Catholic and Orthodox Christians share a love for the Byzantine liturgy because it is during the Eucharist
that the Church is most true to its identity, expresses its integrity, and discovers its vocation. Eastern Catholic and
Orthodox Christians celebrate essentially the identical liturgy, with only very slight variations. It is a fairly
complex ritual weaving together three separate layers of prayers: a liturgy prayed in the sanctuary by priests, often
hidden by a curtain or screen; a liturgy sung by the assembly and led by a deacon in front of a screen formed of painted icons; and a third layer of private prayer by the
priest, who prays in support of the deacon and the faithful. It is an eyes-wide-open experience, gorgeous in visuals, and filled with the sound of God s people singing
prayer. The energy of the worship centers on the presence of Christ, largely through an awareness of heaven
touching earth when the Church gathers to celebrate. In the late twentieth century, Latin Rite Catholics were encouraged to embrace a style of worship that was full,
conscious, and active, a value that has never been lost in the East. The liturgy has great impact in its beauty, in its poetry and contemplation, and by the actions of bowing, signing with the cross, and chanting that are required of the assembly. Contact with the Eastern Church reveals some key values that have been obscured in our own

Khiêm Nhường Là Đặc Tính Của Người Kitô Hữu Cây càng cao, tàng càng lớn, đứng trên đỉnh cao thì nguy cơ
bật gốc hay gãy đổ càng cao. Cây nhỏ, thân mềm như lau sậy, dù đứng ở vị trí nào cũng được an toàn trước cuồng phong bão tố. Kính thưa quý ông bà và anh chị em, Khiêm nhường không phải là thua kém. Có một số người không thích khiêm nhường vì cho rằng khiêm nhường là thua.

Thưa quý ông bà, nếu chúng ta nghĩ như vậy thật không đúng.Hôm nay, Chúa Giêsu dạy chúng ta một bài học quan trọng là sốngkhiêm nhường. Người mời gọi chúng ta vượt qua moi háo danh đểsống tự hạ và khiêm nhường. Nhiều khi chúng ta hiểu sai về khiêmnhường. Khiêm nhường không có nghĩa là tự coi mình không có giátrị gì, không phải là khinh rể bản thân, hay thụ động, không dámnhận trách nhiệm. Khiêm nhường lại càng không phải là một mặt nạ để lôi kéo sự chú ý của người khác: “tôi hạ mình xuống để được tônlên”. Người khiêm nhường là người chấp nhận sự thật, nhận biết thânphận thụ tạo của mình, nhận mình là mình, có sao nói vậy, những gìtôi có và cả con người tôi, đều bởi Thiên Chúa ban tặng. Khiêm nhường là đón nhận đời mình như quà tặng Chúa ban, và dâng lại đời mình cho Chúa như một quà tặng. Khiêm nhường cũng là nhìn nhận sự thật về mình: tôi chưa hoàn hảo, có nhiều thiếu sót, có giới hạn, cần được tha nhân nâng đỡ, góp ý… Giữa một thế giới tự cao tự đại, kiêu ngạo, giả hình, háo danh, đề cao quyền lực và lợi nhuận, say mê thống trị và chiếm đoạt, bè phái và chia rẽ, thái độ công kích, đối đầu vẫn thường bị nhầm lẫn là sức mạnh thì người khiêm nhường không được đánh giá cao; bởi người ta đánh giá sự khiêm nhường với yếu đuối, khờ khạo, và ngu xuẩn,thấp hèn.
Vì thế, Chúa đã dùng dụ ngôn khách được mời tới dự tiệc cưới, Chúa Giêsu muốn dạy chúng ta hãy khiêm nhường dành chỗ rốt nhất, chỗ trọng cho người khác : "Đừng tìm kiếm chỗ nhất" Chúa biết chúng ta thường thích chỗ nhất ở nơi công cộng, trong gia đình,cũng như ngoài
phố, nơi hội họp cũng như bàn ăn… Người biết ý định của chúng ta, nên Người khuyên chúng ta: "Khi anh được mời đi ăn cưới, thì đừng ngồi vào chỗ nhất" (Lc 14,8). Tiếc thay, chỗ nhất chỉ có một chứ không có nhiều, nên người ta phải tranh giành nhau bằng mọi thủ đoạn để chiếm được và giữ được chỗ nhất cho mình. Những cuộc tranh giành như thế vẫn diễn ra nơi gia đình, trong cộng đoàn, trong nhóm, trong giáo xứ, giữa các quốc gia. Ở đâu có hai người trở lên là có đụng chạm, chỉ vì có một chỗ nhất. Vì thế Chúa Giêsu khuyên bảo ta: "Phàm ai tôn mình lên sẽ bị hạ xuống; còn ai hạ mình xuống sẽ được tôn lên" (Lc 14,11). Ai tôn mình lên, dù lộ liễu hay kín đáo, sẽ bị Thiên Chúa hạ xuống. Ai thực tâm hạ mình xuống qua việc phục vụ, sẽ được Thiên Chúa tôn lên. Ai tự nâng mình lên thì không có giá trị gì. Ai được người khác nâng lên, tuy có giá trị đó, nhưng rất mong manh. Ai được Thiên Chúa nâng lên, giá trị đó mới thực cao quý và bền vững. Hai bài học được rút ra từ Tin Mừng hôm nay có một tương quan rất lớn. Bởi lòng yêu thương bao giờ cũng cần khiêm nhường, và hạ thấp thân phận con Người trước mặt Chúa và phục vụ anh em như Chúa Giêsu đã dậy. Không có khiêm nhường thật, không bao giờ có bác ái và tình yêu thương tha nhân. Mặt khác, một người kênh kiệu, thích ra oai tác quái làm sao có thể yêu thương người khác. Yêu thương và khiêm nhường là hai bài học của một thái độ sống. Nếu ta xưng mình là con Thiên Chúa, yêu mến Thiên Chúa, chắc chắn thái độ sống của ta sẽ là thực hành bác ái, sự trao ban và cho đi chính mình, lòng yêu thương quan tâm đến anh chị em xung quanh sự hạ mình và bác ái thẳm sâu đối với tha nhân là tấm vé cho chúng ta được vào nước trời. Lạy Mẹ Maria khi xưa hai tiếng xin vâng với lòng chân thật và khiêm nhường của mẹ đã mang chúa Giêsu đến trong trần gian cứu chuộc nhân loại. Xin ban cho chúng con biết sống hòa mình để phục vụ Chúa và tha nhân, biết yêu thương anh em như chính mình.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE En 1976 un grupo de madres argentinas comenzó una vigilia silenciosa en frente de las oficinas gubernamentales en la Plaza de Mayo. Vestían de negro, con un pañuelo blanco en la cabeza y protestaban la desaparición de sus hijos. Poco a poco esta protesta de madres se fue expandiendo a El Salvador y otros países donde agentes del gobierno hacían desaparecer a los que obraban por la justicia y el bienestar del pueblo. En Latinoamérica la Virgen de los Dolores que viste de negro y llora la muerte de su hijo quien estaba en la flor de la vida se ha transformado en la Madre de los Desaparecidos. Ella acompaña silenciosamente en la protesta de tanta latina que ha perdido hijos, maridos y hermanos a autoridades injustas o cobardes. La vigilia de las Madres de la Plaza de Mayo terminó en enero de 2006 cuando por fin se encontraron con un gobierno que busca a los desaparecidos con ellas. Lamentablemente en muchos lugares las madres de los desaparecidos todavía no pueden contar con las autoridades civiles.
