An epiphany is like an “aha!” moment when one realizes the inner, deeper truth about something that sometimes has been in front of our eyes for quite some time. The Feast today refers to the realization that the baby laying in the manger in Bethlehem is the God-Child promised to redeem humanity. God rent the heavens and came down to us. As I said last week, the Ox and the Ass were the first to recognize Him. Humans were a little slow on the uptake. King Herod, the chief priests and the scribes, who could quote chapter and verse, did not recognize Him. The shepherds and the Magi recognized him. They had an epiphany, an insight, a revelation. That is the important thing about this feast day. Some, like the scribes, like to get bogged down in details. In the 70’s there was a movement in society and among the “chief priests and scribes” of the church to “demystify,” to take the mystery and wonder out of scripture. A fools errand. Some would say that we do not know how many Magi there were. There could have been one, there could have been 5, there could have been 300. It is true that the Gospel of Luke does not specify a number. Doctor Luke says, “Magi from the east”. I will give three reasons why I believe there were three magi. Firstly there were three gifts: gold, frankincense and myrrh. And God told the people through Moses, “None shall appear before me empty-handed” (Ex 23:15). Secondly, the psalmist wrote, “May the kings of Tarshish and of the isles render him tribute, may the kings of Sheba and Seba bring gifts!” (Ps 72:10). Finally, my grandmother taught me that there were three kings and she named them: Caspar, Melchior and Balthazar. In my book my grandmother had more wisdom than the modern “chief priests and scribes” who wanted to make the feast in their own image rather than the image of the Gospels and the tradition which was handed down from grandparent to grandchild over the ages. That’s my story and I’m sticking with it.

A Message from Pastor Fr. Michael Fragoso

Parish Intention of the month During this month, traditionally dedicated

to the holy name of Jesus, that we each meditate on the dignity of this most sacred name, simply but powerfully translated as "savior" and pledge to use it only in prayer.

January 7, 2018 Solemnity of the Epiphany Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, The visit of the magi to the Christ Child has always had a strong hold on the Christian imagination. We like stories that turn conventional expectations on their head. The Old and New Testaments are filled with accounts of God’s goodness to human beings, but here, in the magi’s gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh, we have the reverse: the goodness of human beings towards God. There is something not only very appropriate, but very appealing, about that. But how can we ever begin to repay the LORD for the many ways he has blessed us? Actually, Jesus answered that question in one of his parables: For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, a stranger and you welcomed me, naked and you clothed me, ill and you cared for me, in prison and you visited me […] Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one the least brothers of mine, you did for me (Mt 25:35-36, 40). Next weekend you will have the opportunity to give something back to God by contributing to the annual Together in Charity Collection. This collection funds our Catholic Charities’ Emergency Assistance Program, which aids parishes when individuals and families are faced with urgent financial, housing, or medical needs beyond a parish’s capacity to meet. Your parish may have been one of those helped by the program, since in the last year 59 (or 66%) of our parishes turned to Catholic Charities for emergency assistance. In total, 437 households, consisting of 693 adults and 578 children, were helped by those who gave to the Together in Charity Collection. Please consider giving a gift to the Jesus who is present in the senior citizen who cannot afford a needed prescription or the family facing eviction or the loss of utilities—not gold, frankincense and myrrh, but a monetary donation as your means allow. I thank you in advance for your generosity and assure you of my prayerful good wishes for the year ahead. Yours in Christ, Most Reverend James F. Checchio, JCD, MBA Bishop of Metuchen
