Mel Martocchia and Lou DiMuzio volunteered to oversee an effort to survey Watertown Lodge members and to report the re- sults back to the larger group as soon as possible. Mel, Lou, and I plan to meet sometime during the upcoming weeks to agree on the survey format and the methods for collecting the information. Cari Fratelli e Sorelle,Il dottor Vincenzo Sellaro si

espresse cosi’ col discorso in-augurale, il 22 giugno 1905, a New York:

Dear Brothers and Sisters,Dr. Vincenzo Sellaro spoke

these words in his inaugural address in New York City on June 22, 1905: “Today, we are gathered together for one main purpose, that I want to believe someday that we will become a very important part of American history. We are the newest of the immigrants to this great country, and because of the fi erce and undeserved prejudice and discrimination that we have had to suffer for nearly two de-cades, we must begin to work together, for our common good.”

Today we have come a long way, but we are still fi ghting bias, bigotry, and discrimina-tion against Italians and Ital-ian Americans. Our State and National Commission for Social Justice (CSJ) are working very hard promoting a positive image of Americans of Italian heritage, but they need your help and support. If you should hear any-thing on the radio or see any-thing on TV that is demeaning to Italians or Italian Americans, it’s your obligation to report it to our CSJ at the State and National levels. We must con-tinue to make imprints of our positive image throughout the country, and with your help and support I know we will.

I would like to thank the Sports Commission Chairman Aldo Caira and his committee for the great time had at our fi rst Triathlon of Games on Sunday, January 29 at the Quincy Sons of Italy, where many members enjoyed the Darts, Cribbage, and Scrabble tournaments. An

outstanding meal was provided thanks to the Quincy Men’s and Women’s Lodges.

The fi rst of several Organiza-tion and Education seminars took place on Saturday, Febru-ary 11 at the Newton Sons of Italy. Many lodge offi cers and members were able to take advantage of the wonderful pre-sentations by our State offi cers and commissioners. Thank you to O&E Chairman Lou Floriani and his commission for plan-ning such an informative day. Additional seminars will be tak-ing place in the coming months, so contact the Grand Lodge as soon as possible to reserve your seat.

On Saturday, February 18, we will hold our annual Carnevale Veneziano at the Watertown Sons of Italy. If you are attend-ing this sold-out event, I know you will have a great time. Thank you to Italian Culture Commission Chairman Patrick Moreno and his hard working committee.

We weren’t able to get tickets for a World Champion Boston Bruins hockey game, so Brother Aldo Caira came up with the next best thing. On Saturday, February 25, members will be attending a Hockey East game between Merrimack College and UMass Lowell at the Tsongas Center in Lowell. We are looking forward to this exciting evening!

On Sunday, May 6, the Law and Justice Day Breakfast will be held at The Crestview in Woburn. Please reserve your tickets early by contacting the Grand Lodge.

On Sunday, May 20, the Scholarship Luncheon, honor-ing the outstanding academ-ic, civic and extracurricular achievements of our recipients will be held at the Braintree Sons of Italy.

Our one-day Convention will be held on Saturday, June 16 at the Holiday Inn in Mansfi eld. There will be many new ideas discussed including new venue options for our 2013 State Convention.

On Sunday, July 8 the Grand Lodge will be hosting a Family Outing at Salisbury Reservation in Salisbury. This is a wonderful opportunity to involve your chil-dren and grandchildren in the Sons of Italy, as it will be a day fi lled with food, fun, and games. Contact the Grand Lodge for more information.

On Saturday, August 4 the Grand Lodge will host the an-nual Grand Lodge Cookout at the Hingham Sons of Italy. For those who have been in the past, you know that our mem-bers cook up a great meal, and everyone has a great time. We would love for you to join us, so please contact the Grand Lodge to reserve your tickets.

Please continue to keep the Grand Lodge informed of any functions you are holding, so that we may join in your celebrations.

Kathy and I would like to wish all of our Brothers and Sisters health and prosperity through this lovely mild winter. May God Bless you all, bless the Order Sons of Italy, and bless our ser-vice men and women overseas protecting our freedom.

I biglietti saranno presto esauriti.

Quindi, unitevi a noi. Per informazioni, prego chiamare la Grande Loggia.

Il 6 maggio abbiamo l’evento d’eccezione: “Law and Justice

The Institution of the new Tewksbury Lodge #2872 took place on Sunday, December 18, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at TJ Callahan’s Pub in Tewksbury, Massachusetts.

Wilmington Lodge #2183 was the host lodge, and President Aldo Caira, Jr. opened the ceremony by asking the State Presi-dent to preside in his place for the Institution of this Lodge. State President James DiStefano took his place and then asked that Dorothy Berlandi, Public Relations Chair act as Herald for the ceremony. He then called on Immediate Past President Florence Ferullo Kane and State Second Vice President Antonio Sestito to act as Assistant Heralds.

At this time the three signers of the Charter are called to stand before the Altar and the State President asked Anthony Boschetti, Joseph Mazzola, and George Iannuzzo, the three signers, if the candidates for membership in this Lodge meet the requirements and are worthy of membership. Their reply is “they do”. The State President reads the Charter and states, “In the name of the Su-preme Lodge of the Order Sons of Italy in America, I declare the Tewksbury Lodge #2872 duly formed, under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, and from this day on it may function according to the laws of the Order.”

The State President now proceeds with the initiation of the can-didates for membership. He requests Worthy Vice President Joseph Martell, Worthy Immediate Past President Charles DeStefano, and Worthy Orator Robert Dicey, all of the Wilmington Lodge, to take their places for the Ceremony of Initiation. The candidates are escorted into the hall and take their places facing the Altar. The State President welcomes them to our ranks and then requests the Herald to conduct the candidates to the offi cers who will tell them the fundamental principles of the Order.

The Immediate Past President explains to the candidates our conception of Liberty. The Vice President explains our conception of Equality, and the Orator explains the conception of Fraternity to the candidates.

The Herald is then asked by the State President James DiStefano, before the emblem of our Order, symbol of courage and strength, to read and administer the oath to the candidates.

The State President then declares them members of the Tewks-bury Lodge #2872 and asks the Herald to instruct the new mem-bers in the formalities of the Order. After the formalities the Herald presents the new members of the Order Sons of Italy to the State President. At this time he greets all the members and presents them with our offi cial emblem – the symbol of membership — “the Lion”. This concludes the Initiation Ceremony.

The Ceremony continues with the Installation of Offi cers. The offi cers of the Tewksbury Lodge #2872 are as follows: President George Iannuzzo;Vice President Anthony Boschetti; Immediate Past President Joseph Mazzola; Orator Joseph Ligotti; Recording Secretary Mary Iannuzo; Treasurer Silvia Boschetti; Trustees Tom Porzio, Ralph Carbone, Marc Wallace, George Rizzo, and Roberto Membrino; Master of Ceremonies George Ruggerio; Mistress of Ceremonies Sharon Chalmere, and Guard Anthony Morello.

At the completion of the ceremony State President James DiStefano greets George Iannuzzo and hands him the gavel, which is the symbol of authority. Brother Iannuzzo accepts the gavel and promises to be worthy of our faith.

State President notes that guests who wish to make a presenta-tion should step up to the podium. Many presentations were made, one of which is a complete set of regalia presented to President Iannuzzo by Lodge President Aldo Caira, Jr. from the Wilmington Lodge #2183.

A very delicious collation was offered buffet style by the Tewks-bury Lodge. Thank you to all who took time from their very busy schedules to attend and make this a great occasion for the Tewks-bury Lodge. Many lodges within our jurisdiction attended and we thank them.

To O & E Chairman Louis Floriani, Jr. and his entire committee, a job well done. To State Trustee Stephen Cozzaglio who orches-trated and guided us through this ceremony, we say “Grazie.”

We wish the Tewksbury Lodge #2872 much success and look forward to hearing of your successes.

We established the Dante Land Trust and purchased the lot in 1949 and began construction immediately and completed the building in 1950. An addition was added on in the mid-1960s.

earliest (1954) fraternal organizations to establish academic scholarships for not only members offspring but also any Waltham High School Senior. This year will be our 50th scholarship year and we will propose to honor our brother and life long educator Edmund Tarallo, Sr., who passed away 2003, by adding his name to our scholarship. It will be known as the Waltham Sons of Italy Edmund Tarallo, Sr., Scholarship.

The most prominent members of lodge to go on to OSIA National and State Offi ce include Paul Franchina, Rosario Campisi, Modest Mele, and Edmund Tarallo.

It was senz’altro one of the most vibrant and memorable evenings of our Italian Culture Series. The questions, com-ments, and exuberant chatter by the near forty guests were unmistakable evidence of their enjoyment. This is one of the many culture programs worthy of all lodges.

Mr. Rosario (Ross) Zagami is an energetic, affable, and most entertaining musician and speaker on all aspects of his beloved native Sicily. As an accomplished Benefi t Insurance Commissioner for the Grand Lodge, Mr. Zagami has suc-cessfully nurtured his love for America while celebrating his Italian and Sicilian roots.

His program included a Sicil-ian sing-along with an accom-paniment on guitar, PowerPoint scenes of his home, people, foods, dance, and beaches in Pezzolo (Pr. Messina), and slides of Taormina, Etna, the Calabrian coast, and other beautiful Italian sights. He maintains a home in Pezzolo and has traveled with family on excursions to Sicily an envious twenty-fi ve times. His exuber-ance and good-natured humor was infectious. The audience consisted of members from Burlington, Lexington, Woburn, Billerica, Waltham, Haverhill, and Manchester. The program was thoroughly enjoyed by all, including our State President James DiStefano.

One of my enduring goals from early on in my tenure as

Chairman of the Italian Cul-ture Commission was to fi nd native speakers with expertise on the history and culture of Italy’s twenty regions. I have had visiting speakers on Cam-pania, Abruzzo, Lazio, and Trentino-Alto-Adige in the past and was very pleased to have two speakers on Sicily this past week: Professor Matteo Casini, who spoke on the history and geopolitical importance of Sicily, and Mr. Zagami.

In his concluding remarks, Mr. Zagami noted his avail-ability as a Benefi t Insurance Commissioner to all lodges and

members for professional advice on all kinds of insurance.

This program was one of the many and varied programs by guest academics and profes-sionals focused on all aspects of the Italian language and culture offered by the Italian Culture Commission. Mr. Zagami has indicated a willingness and de-sire to visit other lodges. Sicilian or Italian, contact Pat Moreno to arrange a visit to your lodge at 781-272-5375 or [email protected]. On Sunday, January 29, 2012, the “Triathlon of Games” – the first sporting event of its kind for the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts – was held at the Quincy Lodge #1295. Filial Lodge teams from Quin-cy, Roslindale, Weymouth, Braintree Ladies, Belmont Mixed, Worcester, Wilmington, and Watertown were ready to compete in the three triath-lon events: Darts, Cribbage, and Scrabble. After coffee and donuts, Sports Commission Chairman Aldo Caira, Jr. gave a brief explanation of the rules and team placements. State President James DiStefano wel-comed everyone to the tourna-ment and thanked the Quincy Lodge for their hospitality.

The games began and all play-

ers became immersed in their respective events. Dictionaries were visible in the Scrabble sec-tion, Cribbage boards were set, and Dart players were warming up, stretching muscles, and hoping the darts actually land-ed on the board. As the games progressed, some teams were eliminated early while others advanced. By lunch break, the remaining teams would com-pete in the fi nal rounds of each game. As usual, the Quincy Men’s Lodge outdid themselves in preparing sandwiches, an-tipasto, pasta, meatballs, and sausages. The 50-50 raffle was won by Betty Burke of the Quincy Ladies Lodge. The gift basket was won by Gerry Burke of the Quincy Men’s Lodge.

In the Scrabble tournament, fi rst place went to Marisa Ra-nalli from Braintree Ladies Lodge #1422, and second place went to Carol Rossi from the Belmont Mixed Lodge #1094. The First Place Cribbage team was Dick Delacono and Tony Natale from the Quincy Men’s Lodge #1295. The Second Place Cribbage team, also from the Quincy lodge, consisted of Kevin Mulligan and Peter Johnson. The Darts tournament was also won by a pair of Quincy Men’s Lodge teams; the First Place team consisted of Kevin Cotter, Ted Myers, Michael Mullins, and John Anagnos. In Second Place were Lisa Crockett, Sal DiRusso, Nancy Savioli, and Rick Brant.

At the end of the day Chair-man Aldo Caira, Jr. and his committee members Sharon Caria, Bob and Peg Dicey, and Donna Quinno thanked every-one for their participation in the days events. The Chariman and Committee thanked the par-ticipants and the Quincy Men’s Lodge again for their hospitality.

Don Orione Nursing Home Epiphany Party (Continued from Page 1)

On Sunday, January 8, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. the Charity Commission Chairman and her commit-tee joined the shut-ins of the Don Orione Nursing Home for the annual Epiphany Party.

The Don Orione Epiphany Party is one that is long awaited by the residents at the home. Franca Montemuro the Entertainment Director for the home welcomed all the Charity Commission members and guests to this long awaited event. The room was fi lled with the many residents who attended. It seemed that we had standing room only.

The table with “goodies” was fi lled to overfl ow-ing with homemade biscotti, cookies, pizzelles, brownies, and cakes. Danny Ventola and his accompanist were setting up their microphones and speakers and all was in readiness for this special day for the residents of the Don Orione Nursing Home.

Just as everyone was enjoying the music and singing, Santa made his arrival. Robert Olive-rio of the Belmont Mixed Lodge greeted all theresidents and spent time talking with them and yes, even dancing with a few. It was then time for the giving of gifts, which Santa handed to all present.

Once again the Charity Commission is to be congratulated for yet another successful and fun-fi lled party. Chairman Marylou Abbatessa and her committee have brought these parties to yet another level.

The photos you will enjoy are made pos-sible by State Recording Secretary Ronald Hill. Thank you. Thanks to all commission mem-bers and guests who made the time to spend with these shut-ins at the Don Orione Nursing Home. I believe we can say that “we made their day!”

is delightful to see many of the shut-ins singing along and re-questing some of their favorites.

We thank Function Director Tina Leone of the North End Nursing Home for helping us in making this function possible.

Special thanks go to Brother Ronald Hill, State Recording Secretary, for his photography, it is greatly appreciated. And to all the State Officers and some with their spouses who attended, “Thank You”.

Sister Marylou Abbatessa and her Charity Commission are to be congratulated for such a successful party.

Peel, wash and cube potatoes and set aside. Do the same with onions, carrots, and celery.

Place fl our in a bowl. Sprinkle salt and pepper into fl our before adding beef cubes. Stir Beef cubes in fl our. Remove and set aside.

Heat olive oil in skillet or saucepan and carefully add fl our-dredged cubed beef. Sear beef to brown before adding one cup of water to mixture. Beef will cook in this broth. Add small amounts of water as needed.

Allow meat to simmer slowly in broth for about an hour before adding vegetables to the pot. Stir and continue to cook slowly. Thirty minutes later, stir one tablespoon of ketchup into stew. Allow Beef Stew and vegetables to simmer slowly until cooked to your satisfaction. Add water if necessary.

NOTE: This became one of Mama’s favorite meals to prepare in the winter. She made sure we all had our hearty meal. When she was too busy to go to our apartment to cook, she used the small two-burner unit in “the back room.” Coffee was brewed there every day. A petition separated that small room from the oven and work-shop where the bakers and Papa prepared the bread.

Since Papa always insisted that we ate together as a family, there were many times that our meals were prepared on the small two-burner stove. Of course, Mama added more potatoes and vegetables at times so the working bakers could taste our meal.

When I prepared this meal a few weeks ago, the picture of the “back room” and burner came to my mind. I remembered how the aroma of the baking bread and the stew cooking in the back room spread through the bakery. I really yearned for a loaf of Papa’s bread for supper that evening. But what did I do?? -- I dipped my store bought “Italian sliced” bread in my Beef Stew Broth that eve-ning, and dreamed of those days, back then.

As Chairman of the Membership Commission, one of my responsibilities is overseeing the growth and retention of membership in the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts.

Over the past few years, membership has been a consistent challenge for our organization. We are continuing to as-sess what we do, and how we do it. We are constantly searching for the answers to questions such as, “how do we market

ourselves?” and “what is our purpose in the twenty-fi rst century?”I ask that each President appoint a Membership Chairman within

their lodge to coordinate membership drives and other recruit-ment efforts. I invite every lodge Membership Chairman who is appointed to sit on the state Membership Commission and work with myself and other lodge representatives toward recruting and maintaining our membership.

Once you have appointed a chairman, please submit their name, contact information, an email address, to our Executive Director Paul Guida either by email to [email protected] or by phone at 617-489-5234, so that they will receive Commission meeting notices.

The cooperation of all fi lial lodge presidents is greatly appreciated.

Worcester Lodge #168 held its Christmas party on Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel - St. Ann Center. Michael & Maria’s Catering once again provided a delicious meal of Italian wedding soup, antipasto, pasta, roasted chick-en, potatoes, and vegetables, along with coffee and dessert. More than 200 people were in attendance, including lodge members, State Offi cers, fam-ily, and friends. Lodge Chaplain Msgr. Rocco Piccolomini gave the blessing before the meal. Lodge members gave thanks for all the blessings they have received throughout the year, and appreciated the opportu-nity to complete a community service project that provided homeless men, women, and children some needed warmth in the form of hats, gloves, scarves, and sweaters. Sister Elena Olivieri coordinated this effort. It was a great success and an opportunity for all to share in the wonders of the Christmas season!

music that got people moving on the dance fl oor. There were many items that were raffl ed off throughout the evening, rang-ing from decorated baskets to gift cards donated by members and local businesses. Guests also enjoyed a twist on the classic fi fty/fi fty raffl e, as they placed bids based on how many candies they thought were in a large vase. Linda Fouraux had the closest guess (without go-ing over) and won the vase with all the candy and 50% of the money. Congratulations Linda!

Coordinating this year’s event were three Sciannameo sisters: Vittoria Mastrocola, Caterina Valentine, and Maria (Gina) Sciannameo, with the help of a wonderful crew who made the event a success. Helping with the set-up, clean up, and raffl e were Rita DeSimone, Joseph DeSimone, Rosemarie Miki-tarian, Ginger Rinaldi, Anna Alano, Arthur Venuti, Don-na Giuliani, Mary Ann Bello, Margaret Campbell, Carmelita Bello, Rose Porcaro, Rosalyn Consiglio, Frances Carlson, Aster Scarpone, Josephine Kangas, Lucille Carrier, and Josephine Genattosio.

Without the help of these dedicated helpers, the event

would not be successful. Thank you all.

During the festivities, Lodge President Donna Giuliani wel-comed everyone and intro-duced the guests from other lodges and the Grand Lodge who attended, including First Lady Kathy DiStefano, Mr. and Mrs. Ron Hill, Dorothy Berlandi, Gilson and Linda Fouraux, and Massimo and Marisa Ranalli. We were happy they could join us.

President Donna Giuliani and Vice President Mary Ann Bello assisted with pulling the raffle tickets. Members and local businesses that kindly donated raffl es items this year included Edible Arrangements, Wegman ’s Supermarke t , Price Chopper Supermarkets, Mary Ann Bello, Carmelita Bello, Margaret Campbell, Linda Dattis, Donna Giuliani, Caterina & Vittoria Mastrocola, Rosemarie Mikitarian, Elena

Everyone enjoyed the won-derful evening, and felt blessed to have the opportunity to share good will. A great heart-felt “thank you” goes out to all who helped and supported this event in every way! Everyone is already looking forward to next year’s party!

In addition to the Christmas Party, the lodge took the time to wish Sister Gladys Bello a very happy 96th birthday! Happy Birthday Gladys!

It always feels like you have entered a real Italian restaurant when you are greeted with a recreated Sistine ceiling instead of faux leather banquettes and a catchy “Italian” name. For more than 12 years the Lodge has gathered at Lucia’s in Winchester for our Christmas luncheon, and i t a lways

feels uniquely “Italianita”. Lucia’s success and acclaim is immediately recognizable from the scores of autographed pictures of celebrities from stage, politics, and sports that adorn the walls of the dining rooms. The Frattaroli family has cultivated this Italianita with very fi nely honed recipes taken

from their Sulmona, Abruzzo roots and their Italian wait staff.

This luncheon is a long-standing tradition of the Lodge as a way of saying “thank you” and giving back to the members during the Christmas season. The number of members and guests has always been signifi cant.

This year, as in recent years, entertainment was pro-vided along with delicate Italian pastries and coffee. Ferdinando Argenti sang Italian favorites while at his keyboard, as well as Christmas carols in Ital-ian and English, receiving a standing ovation at the con-clusion of the evening. The

hum of voices, laughter, chat-ter, and the good tidings of Christmas confirmed an-other enjoyable afternoon din-ner at Lucia’s. The Burlington Lodge Christmas luncheon was a success, fi lled with fi ne Italian food, wonderful ambi-ance, and celebration of our heritage.

The G. Marconi Lodge #1620 held its Christmas Party on Thursday, December 1, 2011 at the Greenock Country Club in Lee. Pauline’s was the caterer for the event. Fifty-four members and guests were in attendance and all left the party in the Christmas spirit and ready for the New Year.

The buffet was outstanding and included mashed potatoes, stuffed turkey breast, fi sh, green beans, cold cuts, macaroni and cheese, pasta, and sausages with peppers and onions,

followed by carrot cake, chocolate cake, and Italian cookies for dessert.

This year, instead of exchanging gifts, members partnered to bring baskets, wine, and many other items for the raffl e and were able to raise $246 for our scholarships.

We thank Chairman Ann O’Brien and her committee consisting of Lucy Boldy-ga and Rita Bartini for making arrange-ments for our Christmas Party, Sandra Cozzaglio for organizing the raffl e, Tom Boyne and Mike Vecchia for selling tick-ets, and all the members for bringing in the items for the raffl e and purchasing tickets. We would also like to thank Linda Newton, Cindy Smachetti, Sandra Cozzaglio, and John Pompi for distribut-ing the prizes to the raffl e winners.

There was a little surprise at the begin-ning of the evening when President Ron Nickerson mentioned that he wanted to recognize a member for his community service. That person is President of the Lee Historical Society, one of the Cor-perators of the Lee Library, a member of the Board of Directors for Lee Public Access TV, editor of the lodge’s monthly newsletter, and a State Trustee. Ron presented a beautiful rose boutonnière to Steve Cozzaglio with Anna Zaffanella’s help.
