It typifies the extremes to be found here. Linx, the Belgian jazz singer, will resort to any idiom, any language, any time signature. Occasionally he seems to dispense with bar lines altogether, or he will go beyond lyrics, as he abandons his own words on “A Day’s Journey,” for some free-wheeling scat. “Home, In the Spring” features Linx and the wordless Natalie Dessay in a wistful duet. While he strains for falsetto, she leaps octaves effortlessly. The most impressive tour de force is “The Land of Joy,” in which Linx resorts to jet-speed unison scat with pianist Nathalie Loriers. Linx wrote some of the tunes, which compete quite well against entries by Antonio Carlos Jobim and Joni Mitchell. He can do it all, at the highest level of professionalism, like the superb Brussels Jazz Orchestra, a 17- piece band, used to the coloristic effects that accrue from their apparently endless doublings. Het Brussels Jazz Orchestra heeft zich onder de saxofonist en artistiek leider Frank Vaganée ontwikkeld tot een van de meest prominente orkesten van de hedendaagse jazz. Het fungeert niet zozeer als serviel begeleider van coryfeeën, maar is juist een katalysator van nieuwe ontwikkelingen. De samenwerking met de tegendraadse vocalist Linx heeft met 'Changing faces' een fascinerend album opgeleverd. Linx heeft een markante stem: een beet$ hees, maar met voldoende souplesse om als een lenige straatkat te scatten in het openingsstuk 'Deep night'. Linx heeft een eigen sound en stijl, en creëert door zijn aanpak nieuwe richtingen waarin de vocale jazz zich verder kan ontwikkelen. In de musici van het Brussels Jazz Orchestra, met de geweldige Nederlandse slagwerker Martijn V i (minstens vijf handen en vier voeten!), heeft Linx uitmuntende kompane? gevonden. Het repertoire varieert van originele stukken tot covers van Joni Mitchell ('Back crow') en Jobim ('Por toda a mintia vida). Geen jazzalbum zonder gasten: hier hebben Ivan Lins en Maria Joäo voor een snufje 'Brasilia' gezorgd. Het orkest weet het anarchisme van Linx goed te beteugelen, zonder hem aan banden te leggen. In een tijd van marketingconcepten en uitgedokterde songbook-strategieën, is een dergelijk album een verademing: 'Changing faces' staat voor bezieling, voor avontuur en een liefdevolle muzikale vrijheid.

I %hen I look in your eyes'. Acht jaar later is er 'The very best of Diana Krall'. Deze verzamelaar laat hoogtepunten horen uit de eerste vijftien jaar van Kralls platencarii&re, inclusief drie niet eerder uitgebrachte tracks. Een bijgevoegde dvd bevat videoclips en live opgenomen nummers, een deel geschreven door Kralls echtgenoot Elvis Costello. Met haar zwaar zwoele stem en veelzijdige pianotechniek, strelend, vlinderend en hamerend, maakt Diana Krall van iedere song een monument. Het zijn niet de minste composities die Krall op 'The very best' ten gehore brengt zoals nooit eerder een zangeres voor haar. Dat begint al meteen met 'Wonderful' van George en Ira Gershwin, dat net als Cole Porters 'I've got you under my
, skin' en 'The look of love' van Burt Bacharach een aangename bossa- novatinteling bezit. Heei bijzonder is een doorleefde 'deep south' versie van 'The hem of saturday night' van Tom Waits. Op de dvd zijn het vooral live opgenomen songs als Costello's 'Temptation' en 'The girl in the other room' waarin Krall, begeleid door haar meer dan uitstekende band (met de geweldige gitarist Anthony Wilson) excelleert en zich een artieste van formaat toont.
