LENOX SQUARE MALL REDEVELOPMENT

Since opening in 1959, transformations of Lenox Square Mall have contributed to its removal from its urban context. It is necessary to reverse these effects with a series of strategic implementations that may reinforce growth of the mall programmatically and development of public rights-of-way. Such strategies include:

1 re-establishing interior corridors as consonant with exterior rights-of-way;2 extending external streets through the super-block to enhance dormant connections;3 projecting streets from within the superblock tocreate new connections.

HOWELL MILL FARMERS MARKET

A farmers market embedded in the urban land. Produce is displayed on permanent grass plinths built up seamlessly from the earth, organically situated to conform to the natural watershed. It is as if the market-goer were harvesting the fruits and vegetables directly from the soil.

The produce stands are tucked against the site under a canopy, both wind responsive and manually adjustable by the daily rotation of occupants. And whereas the potentially disorientating grid of timbers remains static, the canopy is constantly dynamic, offering a highly variable experience.

THE NEW GEORGIA PEANUT COMMISSION

A new cultural exhibition for the Georgia Peanut Commission necessitated a reflec-tion on the history and tradition of peanut farming. It subsists as an exercise of making calculated incisions upon the earth- work of awesome expanse yet extreme precision. This project,sited in rural south Georgia, offers that notion for display by elegantly elevating a slice of cultivated land above an evacuated space con-taining visitor exhibits to activate a series of dialectics: solid-void; light-dark; human-peanut.

In 2011, I began working with San Francisco-based artist Gyöngy Laky. A recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, her work is widely published and in permanent collection at the San Francisco MOMA, the Smithsonian’s Renwick Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and others.

While she provided direction, I was afforded a great amount of artistic freedom. Her instruction certainly influenced my own work.
