Dear Members,For the past several years, the Baltimore JCC has taken part in an important benchmarking project conducted by our parent organization, the Jewish Community Center Association of North America. For us, the most important part of the survey is reviewing the feedback we receive from you, our members. We want to thank those of you (over 1000 members in all) who took the time this past fall to tell us what you think of your JCC.

Over the years we have processed your feedback and suggestions and responded with tangible changes and improvements. I have listed several below.

1. You did not want to pay extra for group fitness classes so we made them free to all members. As a result group fitness classes have really taken off and we have expanded our options significantly.

2. You said we needed to be open more hours. We started opening at 5:30 am weekday mornings. Then we opened the Park Heights JCC on Saturday nights after daylight savings time ends (November-March) and we opened the Owings Mills JCC on Saturday afternoons.

3. You told us we needed to be friendlier. We made this a priority with our staff and according to our survey results 85% of you now feel that we are a warm and welcoming crew.

4. You told us to increase the amount of Jewish films at the Gordon Center, so we created our fall Cinefest to augment our highly successful Jewish Film Festival in the spring.

5. This year, due in large part to your requests, we are constructing an exciting new attraction at the Shapiro Recreation Park in Owings Mills, a brand new state-of-art Sprayground due for completion by late May.

As you can see we do listen to your suggestions and we encourage you to let us know what you’d like to see, where we can improve and yes, even what we are doing right. While we are not always able to make every idea a reality, we take your feedback seriously and we do our best to address issues of great concern to our members. We encourage you to share your suggestion with us year round by emailing us at [email protected] or by placing a handwritten note in our suggestion box at our front desks.

We believe the JCC is so much more than programs and facilities. It is a myriad of experiences and opportunities that hopefully enhance the quality of life in Baltimore. To that point over 90% of respondents answered affirmatively to the following phrase, “The JCC creates a sense of belonging among Jews regardless of background”.

We are here to serve you, our members and it is our privilege to have that opportunity.

Louis “Buddy” Sapolsky President, JCC of Greater Baltimore
