Each year we make the Simon Family JCC Summer Camp even better, for 2011, we are proud to introduce the following:

What’s H T This Summer

Israeli Scouts (Tzofim) will spend 3 days at camp this year. IfinterestedinhostingtheScoutswhiletheyarevisiting,pleasecontactShikmaGurvitz at321-2329.

Venture In/Venture Out, for rising 7th through 10th grades-This age group will have the option to “venture in” with teen specialty camps or “venture out” with teen travel camps.

Ruach, for rising 4th-6th grades, will enjoy one late night and one overnight twice during the summer, and will be able to choose from a variety of specialty camps for part of the afternoon.

Chalutzim, for rising 2nd and 3rd grades, will enjoy two late nights at the JCC this summer.

Giborim, for rising Kindergarten and 1st grades, will experience one local field trip as part of their camp week.

• Jewish spirit — Campers experience Jewish life in a fun, informal, and enriching way. Here, culture and tradition are woven into everyday camp life through songs, art, games, Shabbat celebrations, and the values we instill in our camp community.

General InformationHealth Form In accordance with the Commonwealth of Virginia law, each camper must provide the Simon Family JCC with a copy of a health and immunization form signed by the examining physician. This information must be provided no later than Friday, June 3rd, or the day of registration if after this date. Birth Certificate The Simon Family JCC is licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services and they require us to document the identity and age of any child enrolling in any of our programs. Proof of identity may include a birth certificate or a birth registration card. If you provided this information to us last year, there is no need to provide it this year. Medical There will be a camp nurse on campus from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm. If a camper takes medication, a separate form will be sent to the parent for specific instructions and a doctor’s authorization. This form and the medication must be given to the Camp Nurse by the parent/guardian of the camper. Please also provide information on any allergies your child has. Safety The safety of our campers is our number one priority. We hire skilled and experienced staff who are certified in CPR, AED, and first aid. We conduct background checks on all staff and maintain an excellent staff-to-camper ratio. In addition, your children will swim under the supervision of certified lifeguards and receive swim instruction by certified Red Cross instructors. Camp Lunch & Snack The JCC is a Kosher campus. Each camper will need to provide their own lunch and beverage, unless they have purchased a lunch card from the Cardo Café (more information on p.5). If you need more information on our Kosher policies, please refer to the Parents’ Manual. A morning and afternoon Kosher snack will be given to each camper. Campers are not allowed to use the snack machines during camp hours.


Special NeedsFully Inclus ive Camp Setting

The Simon Family Jewish Community Center works to provide a fully integrated summer camp experience for all children. With the help of specially trained staff, we offer accommodations for children with a variety of physical, intellectual, behavioral and emotional needs. This unique, all inclusive camp experience provides the opportunity to enjoy the fun of all camp programs. Specialized staff provides one-on-one assistance to campers. An initial personal meeting with the family is required before enrollment to ensure the appropriateness of our camp for the child. Interviews will begin in March 2011 and availability in the program is limited. Please call Michelle Fenley, 459-4640.

Red Cross® Instructional Swim

Campers plunge into daily instructional swim and free swim programs, learning basic swim techniques and water safety skills under the supervision and guidance of our Red Cross certified lifeguards and instructors. Our low camper to instructor ratio ensures that every child receives individual attention and quality instruction. On each camper’s first day, our aquatic staff evaluates your child’s swimming skills, ensuring proper placement at the appropriate level. Throughout the summer, campers receive individualized instruction and develop at their own pace while advancing through our progressive skill levels which range from the basic beginner to the advanced, and challenge even the most experienced swimmers.

Before & After CareIs your family full of early birds? Are you night owls? Then before and after care might be an option for you. Before care starts at 6:30am in the Kids’ Zone located upstairs in the JCC near the fitness area. At 8:30am, the campers go over to Hebrew Academy where camp is located, until they can go to their “bunks” at approximately 8:45am. After care starts at 3:30pm and is held at Hebrew Academy until 6:00pm. Before and After Care is only offered for Kaitana, Giborim, Chalutzim, and Ruach camps.

This program gives your little one a summer camp experience geared specifically for this young population. Held in the Beginnings room with lots of opportunity for outside play, children are introduced to beginning group experiences in a safe and nurturing environment. Parents have time to themselves while children participate in singing, crafts, and other age-appropriate activities, just like the “big” kids. Children will experience a sensory extravaganza that will give each child a chance to taste, feel, smell, hear, and touch the wonders of a summer day. Play experiences are sure to delight your little one. Choose either 4-week or 8-week with 2-day, 3-day, or 5-day options available. Please contact Beginnings at 321-2332 for more information.

This camp is for JCC members only. Due to small class size, spaces are limited.

An introduction to camp for our youngsters. We offer the opportunity to experience developmentally appropriate, theme-oriented camp activities such as Red Cross swimming lessons, hands-on art projects, sand and water play, gross motor activities, and outdoor playground fun. The children enjoy singing and music combined with creative movement. This is a wonderful time for your little one to meet and play with new friends.

Camp Kaitana is for our three, four and young five year olds. Camp will be filled with fun, age-appropriate camp activities throughout the day ensuring big smiles and a very excited youngster at the beginning and

the end of the day. Kaitana Day Camp will focus on a theme each week. Themes are selected in the areas of art, sport, air and space topics, animals and creative thinking/making. Each day will be rounded out with swim lessons and free swim as well as indoor and outdoor playtime. Each week your child will also

enjoy a live performance at the JCC. There are two camp options each week, day camp or specialty camp.

Week 1: June 20-24 • Abrakadoodle-Doodles & DragonsCome enter a fantasy world of your imagination where unicorns roam and wizards unite. Battle a fire-breathing dragon or concoct a mysterious potion. You’ll howl with joy as you create mesmerizing art work in this fantasy art camp. Camp is led by an Abrakadoodle Art Specialist.

Week 2: June 27-July 1 • Abrakadoodle-Pirate IslandAhoy all Mateys! Come aboard as we travel to Pirate Island where we’ll find treasure chests, sandy beaches, colorful parrots and lots of fun! Create pirate ships, sand castles, treasure maps, sea monsters, ship flags, and more! Explore sand painting, sculpture, paper construction and lots more! Play games, listen and sing along to music, and act like Pirates Arrrgh! Camp is led by an Abrakadoodle Art Specialist.

* Week 3: July 5-8 • Ballet * No camp July 4Welcome to the world of ballet! This camp will give children the opportunity to learn ballet positions, exercises and movements of classical form while improving strength, balance, coordination, flexibility, and self-esteem.

Week 4: July 11-15 • Kenpo KarateKenpo Karate is a martial art designed for self-defense. This camp will introduce campers to multiple types of punches, kicks, and blocks. Benefits of participating in Kenpo Karate include increased self-esteem, increased balance and coordination, and improvements in school and at home. All techniques are always practiced in a fun and safe environment that is perfect for children. This camp is taught by a certified martial arts instructor with multiple awards in local, national, and international tournaments.

Week 5: July 18-22 • Music & DanceMixing music with creative motion is what this camp is all about! Your little one will learn many interactive songs, have an introduction to basic percussion instruments, and explore different patterns, rhythms and styles of music. Campers will also learn to move to the rhythm and beat of specific styles of music and perform everything they learned for you!


Camp Kaitana

Week 6: July 25-29 • Jr. SportsThis is an exciting way to introduce your little one to the wide world of sports. Each day, campers will engage in a different sport. Sports include: soccer, floor hockey, basketball,and t-ball. Campers learn the skill of each sport, as well as teamwork and cooperation. Taught by our Sports Specialist Katherine Dunford.

Week 7: August 1-5 • Princess Fairytale CampTurn your fairytale into real life at this camp! Dream up fairy tale stories to act out and make crafts such as crowns, puppets, and draw their own fairy tale story. End the week by dressing as your favorite character and attending your own magical tea party.

Week 8: August 8-12 • SoccerThis introduction to soccer will teach many skills to use on and off the field. Campers will learn the sport in a noncompetitive environment. The camp emphasizes the basic essentials such as dribbling, passing, shooting, and most importantly, TEAMWORK.



Week 1: June 20-24 • Lego® MagicThis camp is designed for kids who love to create, build, and discover using Legos. Campers are introduced to beginning engineering, math, technology, and programming. Your child has the opportunity to build models and then program them on a computer to move and make noises. Working with a partner, kids also develop collaboration and problem solving skills.

Week 2: June 27-July 1 • Hip HopHip Hop is a fun and energetic dance style for any level of dancer. This camp will teach the latest and greatest moves. Increase strength and flexibility, move to the beat and also enjoy creating dance posters, collages, and other dance crafts during the week. There will be a performance at the end of the week.

* Week 3: July 5-8 Tennis * No camp July 4Swing into this awesome camp! Learn the fundamentals of tennis through non-competitive lessons. Daily instruction will focus on basic skills with an emphasis on sportsmanship, safety, and fun. Special talks and demonstrations will divide each session into enjoyable segments.

Week 4: July 11-15 • Abrakadoodle-Wild Wild WestVisit the Wild, Wild West for a Rootin’ Tootin’ Doodlin’ good time! Campers design their own pair of cowboy boots, wrangle a rattle snake, have a powwow with the Indians and create an art adventure they won’t want to miss. Play games, listen and sing along to music plus tell campfire stories while on the trail! Camp is led by an Abrakadoodle Art Specialist.

Week 5: July 18-22 • Kenpo KarateKenpo Karate is a martial art designed for self-defense. This camp will introduce campers to multiple types of punches, kicks, and blocks. Benefits of participating in Kenpo Karate include increased self-esteem, increased balance and coordination, and improvements in school and at home. Techniques are always practiced in a fun and safe environment perfect for children. This camp is taught by a certified martial arts instructor with multiple awards in local, national, and international tournaments.

Week 6: July 25-29 • Abrakadoodle-Zoo Doodle SafariLions and tigers and snakes, oh my! Off on safari we go where we create jungle cats, monkeys, elephants and more on this adventure. Make safari art with paints, modeling materials, and wild animal print papers. Create pictures of this awesome adventure. Play games, listen and sing along to music, plus tell animal stories while on the exploration. Camp is led by an Abrakadoodle Art Specialist.

Camp Giborim

Camp Giborim is specifically designed for rising kindergarten and first grade campers. From “Galactic Fun” to “Fossil Frenzy” this group will explore and enjoy age-appropriate topics and fun activities. Daily swim lessons and free swim, sports, tennis, arts & crafts and music will enrich the campers’ experience. Campers will also enjoy a weekly field trip to a local attraction. There are two camp options each week, day camp or specialty camp.

Week 7: August 1-5 • SoccerKick ahead of the competition by learning about dribbling, trapping, passing and shooting while taking a turn or two behind the goal. Repetition of technical skills and small games are the teaching techniques used to enable players maximum touches on the ball and increasing opportunities to make decisions in game situations. Emphasis is placed on building individual confidence and skill. All players must bring their own playing equipment, including shin guards and shoes.

Week 8: August 8-12 • Mad Science introduces “The Garden!”This camp offers young children an exciting introduction to basic environmental science. Each day is devoted to different aspects of the garden, allowing children to progressively enrich their understanding of how living things grow and how they interact with the environment around them. Each day campers will bring home an exciting take-home project to extend the learning and fun after camp is over!

Camp ChalutzimRising 2nd & 3rd Grades

Rising 2nd and 3rd graders are invited to participate in the exciting offerings of Camp Chalutzim. Theme-based day camp activities will be offered throughout the summer. There is something for everyone: sports, tennis, arts and music — even traveling around the world are part of this camp. Daily swim lessons and free swim, sports, and arts & crafts will further enrich the campers’ experience. Weekly field trips are an exciting part of the Chalutzim Day Camp experience. Parents will be informed of the weekly destinations prior to camp starting in the Summer Camp Activities Calendar. There will be two late night “fun nights” at the JCC during the summer. There are two camp options each week, day camp or specialty camp.

Week 4: July 11-15 • Magic CampYour child can do MAGIC! Children will learn amazing magic tricks they can perform for family and friends. Children will watch each magic trick, learn the secret, and then receive instruction and hands-on training to perform the trick. Children will receive the necessary props and practice the tricks and then present the tricks for others. A small camp size and expert instruction helps ensure each child receives individual attention. All materials and tricks are provided. The children also receive a magic case they decorate and fill throughout the week and take home at the end of the week. On the last day of camp, the children will present a magic show to family and friends. The camp is taught by the award-winning, professional magician and family entertainer Rob Wescott.

Week 5: July 18-22 • Blast off with Mad Science and NASA: Journey Into Outer Space!From our Earth’s atmosphere to the outer reaches of our solar system, this hands-on program sends children on a quest for exploration! Comets, planets, stars and more are all waiting to be discovered. Learn about the four forces of flight, the challenges of space travel, and participate in a rocket launch! Each day campers will bring home an exciting take-home project to extend the learning and fun after camp is over!


Camp Chalutzim

Week 6: July 25-29 • Kenpo Karate/SomboThis camp is a combination of Kenpo Karate, a martial art designed for self-defense, and Sombo, a martial art designed to control the opponent on the ground, similar to wrestling. This camp will introduce campers to multiple types of punches, kicks, and blocks as well as numerous types of holds, takedowns, and ground positioning. Benefits of participating in Kenpo Karate include increased self-esteem, increased balance and coordination, and improvements in school and at home. All techniques are always practiced in a fun and safe environment that is perfect for children. This camp is taught by a certified martial arts instructor with multiple awards in local, national, and international tournaments.

Week 7: August 1-5 • Abrakadoodle, Dreaming of the FutureIf you’ve ever dreamed of being a super sleuth, a super hero or heroine, race car driver, architect or space explorer - this is the Abrakadoodle camp for you! Follow the clues to create an artist’s sketch of the perpetrator. Learn about fingerprinting and make your own special fingerprint art. Show your super might in a photo illustration. There’s a little competition – and fun, as you create and race your own race car. Put your imagination into overdrive as you design a city for the future. Explore outer space while learning about the Hubble Telescope. Build and name your own star! There will be future focused games, music and a new adventure every day! Camp is led by an Abrakadoodle Art Specialist.

Week 8:-August 8-12 • CheerleadingThis camp combines cheers, dance routines, gymnastics, jumps, pyramid building, and art to provide your child with a spirited week full of fun! Campers will learn the fundamentals of cheerleading with an emphasis on proper technique and safety. They will also take part in a variety of art activities to make pompoms, megaphones, posters, and pennants. The week culminates with a pep rally for the parents. Campers should wear comfortable athletic clothing and shoes.


Camp RuachRising 4th thr

6th Grades

Rising 4th and 5th graders are invited to join us in our SPIRIT (Ruach) camp! With off-site trips scheduled two times a week this camp will be adventurous! Off-campus destinations may include the Rock Gym, Laser Quest, Bush Gardens, local museums and parks, and kayaking. Three days a week campers will stay on our campus with a lot of fun activities including sports, arts, team building exercises, and ton of swimming in the pool. Please note that only free swim is included in the program (no swim lessons for this age group). Campers will also have two “overnights” at the JCC during the summer. There are two camp options each week, day camp or specialty camp.

Week 2: June 27-July 1 • All-Star Field Hockey CampLed by former U.S. field hockey players who were members of the 2008 Olympic team, this camp will surely create a love for the game of field hockey. Each day campers will e introduced to a main basic skill, then work on that skill with fun drills and reinforcement style games. Small numbered games will provide plenty of action for each camper, while full-field games will allow for a taste of the “real” game.

* Week 3: July 5-8 • Mad Science’s Camp, “Whodunit?” * No camp July 4This camp focuses on the science of forensics in this hands-on look at crime scenes. Identify and collect evidence, from fingerprints to tracks to trash! Recreate the scene of a crime using clues and detailed observations. Campers will use science to connect the dots and help sniff out the suspects in this exciting investigation into the science of crime-solving. Each day campers will bring home an exciting take-home project to extend the learning and fun after camp is over!


Camp Ruach

small camp size and expert instruction helps ensure each child receives individual attention. All materials and tricks are provided. The children also receive a magic case they decorate and fill throughout the week and take home at the end of the week. On the last day of camp, the children will present a magic show to family and friends. The camp is taught by the award-winning, professional magician and family entertainer Rob Wescott.

Week 8: August 8-12 • Abrakadoodle, A Different PerspectiveArt is a wonderful lens through which to view the world in different ways. In this camp, students will explore the idea of perspective: from the basic concept of linear perspective, to anamorphosis, trompe l’oeil, use of scale and cubism. We’ll also explore abstract art, photography and more as we look at ordinary things from a different perspective. Camp is led by an Abrakadoodle Art Specialist.

Week 4: July 11-15 • CheerleadingThis camp combines cheers, dance routines, gymnastics, jumps, pyramid building, and art to provide your child with a spirited week full of fun! Campers will learn the fundamentals of cheerleading with an emphasis on proper technique and safety. They will also take part in a variety of art activities to make pompoms, megaphones, posters, and pennants. The week culminates with a pep rally for the parents. Campers should wear comfortable athletic clothing and shoes.

Week 5: July 18-22 • Get FitThis camp is designed to enhance your child’s health and fitness level through a structured, yet fun exercise program. Campers will use cardiovascular equipment and resistence equipment in a safe, fun-filled environment. Campers will also learn the benefits of keeping a workout journal and start their own. Taught by a certified instructor.

Week 6: July 25-29 • SoccerKick ahead of the competition by learning about dribbling, trapping, passing and shooting while taking a turn or two behind the goal. Repetition of technical skills and small games are the teaching techniques used to enable players maximum touches on the ball and increasing opportunities to make decisions in game situations. Emphasis is placed on building individual confidence and skill. All players must bring their own playing equipment, including shin guards and shoes.

Week 7: August 1-5 • Magic CampYour child can do MAGIC! Children will learn amazing magic tricks they can perform for family and friends. Children will watch each magic trick, learn the secret, and then receive instruction and hands-on training to perform the trick. Children will receive the necessary props and practice the tricks and then present the tricks for others. A

s Venture In is specialty camps geared to the interests of older kids. Each 2-week session includes one week of community service and one of a specialty camp. During the first week, your child will experience a week of fun and community service at the Simon Family JCC. They will participate in water activities, sports, arts & crafts, drama, music, pioneering, and Israeli culture. In addition, they will have the opportunity to impact lives through a variety of hands-on community service experiences. They will connect real world experiences to basic values and the building of community. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate for community service hours.

The second week will be a specialty camp! The following are the specialty camps offered for Summer 2011:

Week 2: June 27-July 1 • The Pressure Cooker(Simon Family JCC’s version of “Top Chef”) Each day will be a different theme as well as a “quick fire challenge” and one participant will be declared the winner each day. Friday will be “Restaurant Wars” inviting parents to feast on the custom creations their children have prepared. At the end of the week, each camper will take home a chef’s cookbook with all of the week’s highlights. No cooking experience needed but a willingness to go for it and be creative in the kitchen is a must!

Week 4: July 11-15 • The Ultimate Challenge(Simon Family JCC’s version of “Survivor”) Each day teens will compete to earn points based on participation, attitude, skill, and accomplishment. The camper at the end of the week will win a special prize!

Week 6: July 25-29 • The “J”ee Club(Simon Family JCC’s version of “Glee”)Each day campers will choreograph and sing their favorite hit songs that will lead up to their own “Sectionals” at the end of the week. “J”eeks will perform and be judged on Friday by the entire camp!

Week 8: August 8-12 • JCC Crime Lab This Forensic Science Camp will introduce your child to the fascinating world of Forensic Science. Learn what it really takes to process a crime scene, analyze evidence, use DNA technology to solve crime and develop your own DNA profile. Each camper will participate in a mock trial using the evidence collected and analyzed.

Venture Out

Week 6: July 24-28 • Charlotte/Atlanta$815 for members/$965 for non-membersAre you ready for HotLanta?! We are! We will spend the day at Carowinds’ Amusement Park and spend the night at the Charlotte JCC. We will visit the Nascar Hall of Fame before departing for Atlanta. Highlights include a visit to the Braves’ stadium, taste samples of Coca-Cola from around the world, visit CNN studios, Stone Mountain and the laser show, and the Holocaust Museum to name a few. We will wrap up the trip by stopping at the Lazy 5 Ranch in Mooresville, North Carolina where we will be able to hand feed animals from around the world.

Week 8: August 7-11• Capital Camps, Waynesboro, PA $650 for members/$800 for non-membersLocated in Waynesboro, PA, you will have the opportunity to experience the first-rate facilities and programs of this Jewish overnight camp. During your stay here, you will be immersed in a world of new experiences from the ropes course; lake activities to include canoeing, kayaking and giant inflatables; the adventure zone that includes an across-the-lake zip line and climbing wall; aquatic activities with water flumes and water play features; sports; and, arts and crafts that include pottery, ceramics, and silk screening.

s Venture Out is a unique teen travel camp geared to the interests of older kids that will turn a typical summer into an eye-opening adventure! This camp is designed to promote individual discovery and self-expression and provide distinct opportunities for building confidence and self-esteem through exploration, creativity, adventure, and giving.

Each 2-week session includes one week in town and one week out of town. During the in town week, your child will experience a week of fun and community service at the Simon Family JCC. They will participate in water activities, sports, arts & crafts, drama, music, pioneering, and Israeli culture. In addition, they will have the opportunity to impact lives through a variety of hands-on community service experiences. They will connect real world experiences to basic values and the building of community. Upon completion, participants will receive a certificate for community service hours.

The second week, they will be venturing out! Campers will leave on Sunday for a trip and return on Thursday. Fridays will be spent at the JCC participating in Shabbat celebrations and weekly themed activities.

Rising 7th-10th Grades

The trips for Summer 2011 are: Week 2: June 26-30 • Baltimore $650 for members/$800 for non-membersPack your bags and don’t forget your camera for a week of sightseeing in the home of the Baltimore Orioles and the Ravens! Each day will be filled with a variety of experiences to include the Aquarium, Inner Harbor, Jewish Heritage Museum and Holocaust Memorial Park, Six Flags, a walking Ghost Tour, an Orioles’ baseball game, and many other sights.

Week 4: July 10-14 • West Virginia $815 for members/$965 for non-members Prepare yourself for the time of your life! Your four day adventure includes white water rafting, zip line through the mountains, hiking, climbing, horseback riding and mountain climbing, and more! You will have the opportunity to sleep under the stars and take in the beauty of the West Virginia mountains.


CIT ProgramDo you have great memories of your summers at JCC Camp? Do you love working with children? Do you have the JCC Camp spirit? If you are entering grades 9 or 10, then you can apply to be a CIT, a Counselor In Training.

Our CIT program is a leadership training program that will give your child hands-on experience working with campers. Our program is built to encourage teens to become role models and leaders in the community. CIT participants plan programs, lead activities, and create projects for a group of campers. Each CIT will be assigned to a different camp group or specialty each week so that he/she gets experience working with different aged campers, while still developing the skills to become an effective camp counselor. In addition, participants will receive CPR and First Aid training.

All prospective CITs will need to complete an application and an interview process before being accepted into the program. CITs must commit to a minimum of four weeks, equaling to one camp session to enroll.

There are two-four week sessions, June 20-July 15 and July 18-August 12. Upon completion of a four week session, participants receive a $50 gift card award and a certificate for community service hours.

Extend the summer and enjoy an extra two weeks of fun at the Simon Family JCC!

Kindergarten to 5th grade - Camps Giborim, Chalutzim, and Ruach. Based on the structure of Kids Connection, the Simon Family J’s Before & After School program model - minus homework! Play, swim, exercise and create art projects in a cross-age setting.
