the Pl.-tquemine Brulee on the South, the Courtr.bleau on (lie East, and the Bayou Cane on the Yi est. Taking Washington as the initial point, (it being the head of Steamboat navigation), let us turn our faces
South-west ; crossing the Dayou Carron in the rear of Washington, we ascend the
bluff, which was formerly the Western barrier of the Red River, and are upon the
common tab'e land, which extends to the
Bayou Cane. Passing amidst farms, and over a gently undulating country, we, at
tne distance of six miles reach Ouelousas,
the seat of justice. This town has a popu
lation of some fifteen hundred inhabitants • is beautifully located, and is susceptible of
of being made one of the most charming
of our rural cities. It has a large and fertile country to supply, and from which,
with tue introduction of capital and energv,
it must inevitably reap a large benefit. There is a Female Seminary under the
direction of the Rev. B. F. White and his
accomplished Lady; a male school under ; the charge of the Rev. C. A. Frazee, both
j Protestant, and also a flourishing Convent and male school, under the'direction of our
Catholic neighbo s. Li addition to these old established schools, there is one which we do not desire to j a-s by without 'men
tion, viz.: that under the direction of Mrs.
Dewees, who is conducting successfully an excellent priva e school for the education of young ladies.
In addition to these essential and well-conductcd institutions of learning, we have
a Methodist, Episcopal, and Catholic Churchy tue former under the Pastoral charge of the it.ev, John W ilkiuson, who is as nvich dis* tingushed for his talents as he is beloved
by his people. The Episcopal church has not at present a settled Pastor, but is for the time presided over by the Rev. Mr. Morrison, a gentleman of fine abilities, and
who seems to give much satisfaction to his flocit. Our town also possesses amongst other good things, skillful andaccomplished physicians-, who are perfectly acqtiain'cd. with Lise diseases incident to 0".r geographical position ; and a bar, which for ability and learning, is second to none in the Sta'e j
of Louisiana. Among th* latter are several lawyers who have occupied either the Su- j nr-me o'- District benches. In a social point ! oi vie-, wc believe that o:;r community v n !

^T" The Banner of last week takes exception to that poi tion of our description of the Parish of St. Landry, which compares it to St. Mary, St. Martin and Yerinillion, in respect to the area of cach subject to inundation. We regret that our neighbor is offended with us, and we assure him that no paragraph in the article so severely condemned by him, was prompted by a disposition in us to " tear down." We respect *nd esteem him and his parishoners too highly, and are animated by too sincere a wish for the well-being of the whole country to write or speak one word p-ith the intent charged against us.
- We trust thut Brother Bennett will not {«rsist in bi-ing offende«! with us after ho reads the above assurances. St. Mary has raie beauties and advnntagos which have gfyen It a name abroad as well as at hoaae, tf^t is excelled by no parish in the State, asd that is envied by all.

.Tte ire much gratified to be able to state .that some of our leading citizens have organized -themselves under the above title, .for the purpose of stimulating immigration to our parish from the North and Western States, and from any other locality which
sapf»ty as with a class of people willing and able to develope .the natural resources of our country.
This is the pressing need of the hour, and any scheme, or plan which promises practical results in this direction, should meet with the zealous support and co-operation of every resident of.the parish.
£ho plan adopted by the gentlemen who have engaged in this matter, is a very sim-jpfe one, involving neither the expenditure .of «ûney, labor, or tune, and at the same t.me, we vertly believe, it is one, which, if earned out vigorously, will work wonders towards restoring otir parish to its former s<*m(?*na prosperous ooudition.
To the public-spirited citizens who are laboring to make this movement a success, we tender all the encouragement and ancc which we, as a journalist, can give themj ami we predict that^ut of this sméj! beginning, will result to the Parish of St Ln'ndry, %a new era of prosperity and good Ibrtane.

From present will witness^ from Europe unparaîîed in its previous'iii,-tory. A dispatch from Bremen of the 7th tnst., published in the New York Herald says that " upwards of seven thousand emigrants left Germany during the past week for America# ports. " In addition to this three thousand left Ireland for the same des-ination the preceding week. Queenstown is said to be crowded with emigrants awais-ing transportacio.i. Could not some measures be inaugurated by which this tide could be turned toward the Southern'States ? Equaling in most advantages and surpassing in fertility the West, it would seem that the South is^the proper field.j^r their settlement, and offers by far the best inducements.—Jf. O iimes.
A prominent Radical New York paper arrives to the following sensible conclusion aWout the Ku Klux Ki n, after very properly condemning some outrages alleged to have been perpetrated by its members in Georgia, though the responsibility in the premises is by no means clearly fixed :
Lamentable as the sentiment may be» involving evetj disloyalty to the Government, which is revealed in tl)o lawless deeds of i conspiratofs, .it may, per-naps, cause judicious and dispassionate men to ask themselves whether the deliberate at-tcmpt to force negro domination upon the Southern people is not underneath at all ?
