Born and raised in Denmark, Jens D. Laugesen moved to Paris in 1987 where he worked as chief assistant to visionary fashion photographer/art director Gunnar Larsen. This introduction to the world of high fashion encouraged Jens to study the techniques of Haute Couture design at the Chambre Syndicale de la Couture Parisienne. He graduated as top student in 1991, which resulted in him undertaking rare and prestigious intern-ships in the couture studios of both M. Paco Rabanne, and M. Hubert De Givenchy.

Subsequently Jens worked for 2 years as a fashion journalist for the Scandi-navian press before returning to education in 1993 to taking a Masters De-gree in Fashion Management at the INSTITUT FRANCAIS DE LA MODE IFM in Paris. Following his graduation from IFM in 1994, Laugesen spent the following six years working as senior collection designer, design studio manager and head of collection for a number of internationally renowned design houses in Paris at both Haute Couture and Ready-to-Wear level.

In 2000 Jens relocated to London, where he joined the prestigious MA Fash-ion (womenswear) course at CENTRAL SAINT MARTINS CSM. Graduat-ing with a distinction in February 2002, his much-acclaimed graduate col-lection was selected by leading Paris boutique Maria Luisa to be exhibited in the coveted store windows during Haute Couture week in July 2002. Jens was also invited to present his eponymous collection at London Fash-ion Week’s talent spotting FASHION EAST show.

Heralded by Observer Magazine as “London’s answer to Helmut Lang”, Jens was awarded the British Fashion Council’s NEW GENERATION award, permitting him to move his show onto the official London Fashion Week schedule for the coming 5 seasons. The first on-schedule show was an immediate success and he was named “the next big thing” by fash-ion industry figurehead Suzy Menkes, of the International Herald Tribune who described his collection as having “a sluttish elegance”.

The //JENS_LAUGESEN label went on to trade for 6 years, during which time it showed on the London Fashion Week and Paris Fashion Week of-ficial schedules, and was stocked in more than 45 high profile stores world-wide, including Doverstreet Market and Selfridges (London), Maria Luisa (Paris), Lazzari (Treviso, Italy), Andreas Murkodis (Berlin), UK Style (Mos-cow), Susan of Burlingame and Opening Ceremonie (USA), IT and Shine (Hong Kong), Loveless, Adelaide and Beams International (Tokyo).

In 2006, Jens Laugesen became the first London designer to be awarded the French ANDAM FASHION AWARD,, a fashion award for young de-signers supported by LVMH Group and L’Oreal, and which has previ-ously been awarded to the designers such as Martin Margiela and Viktor and Rolf, amongst others. The prestigious financial award allowed him to present his AW0708 collection in Paris with an exhibition at the Musee des Arts Decoratifs, in the Louvre. The following season Jens returned to the London schedule, with a collection that was described by Vogue.com as ‘one of the most beautiful shows of London Fashion Week’.

Other awards included the British Fashion Council’s FASHION FOR-WARD award for SS08, entailing financial support from Westfield London for two consecutive seasons, and ‘Designer of the Year’ in March 2008 in his native Denmark.

Jens designed 12 collections (4 trilogies) with his eponymous brand, that became know for it’s conceptual thinking and personal “utilitarian” ap-proach to the architecture of clothing. Developing a personal design phi-losophy named “Hybrid Reconstruction”, his work has also been featured in various style reference books including FASHION NOW 2 by I-D for Tashcheon, SAMPLE 100 for Phaidon just as it has been showcased in nu-merous collective exhibitions in international museums such as VICTORIA & ALBERT V&A (London), UCAD MUSEE DE LA MODE at LE LOUVRE (Paris) DANISH DESIGN CENTER, (Copenhagen) and FASHION IN-SITUTTE OF TECHNOLOGY FIT (New York).

Collaborations with prestigious fashion brands include capsule collections and creative concepts designed for ATELIER SWAROVSKI, TOPSHOP, KOPENHAGEN FUR, COTTON USA and SPIEWAK.

Most recently he has collaborated for SS09 and AW0910 with LINDA FAR-ROW VINTAGE for the launch of the brands first “hybrid” sunglasses, cross breading the glamorous origins of the iconic brand with a 70’s unisex aviator. Jens has also taught on the Fashion Design MA course at Central Saint Martins and is currently undertaking consultancies as Creative Di-rector and Design Advisor for international Luxury and Ready to Wear clients.

INTERVIEW / Sep 2008Editorial

2008Jens Laugesen is working a big shoulder this season. “ It’s a double shoulder pad, from men’s tailoring, ” he explained.“ But I’ve been figuring out how to morph that with corsetry to make a fusion that’s sexy.” That meant he’d followed up the teddy boy tux jackets that sold well from his Spring collection, refabricated them from gold lamé to electric-blue couture brocade, and added more drummer boy, DJ, and bomber shapes. They came out paired with skintight high-waist pants, body-hugging dresses, and a catsuit, to which the de-signer had added some concession toward comfort and fit in the form of panels of stretch in the back.

“ Jens Laugesen is the designer for the strong and sophisticated woman of today. His design philosophy is timeless, elegant and edgy, yet each new collection nails the current mood. His pieces are eminently desirable and Jens’s un-compromising views on quality and style make that his fashion never dates. “

“ Masculine tailoring and soft feminine dresses marked Jens Laugesen’s autumn/winter show-ing with a play of hard against soft… And that work on producing the perfect shoulder pad was not in vain, with a series of some of the sharpest tailoring seen this week. ” WGSN / Feb 2008

2007“ Jens Laugesen may be London’s best object lesson in stick-ing to your guns. In the late nineties when Helmut Lang was God, this Danish-born designer started working, like many others, on edgy tailoring. Then Lang disappeared, and Laugesen’s minimal suiting experiments elicited mini-mal interest. Now, though—in a season when the young London fashion crowd is turning up at the shows in varia-tions on sharp tailoring—his persistence may finally pay off.In this century, Stefano Pilati has sparked the renewed in-terest in jackets. In other words, it’s tux time again. That puts Laugesen’s narrow gold lamé jacket with black satin revers and his white A-line dinner jacket in the frame. He’s also thought about what to wear beneath them to create the right leggy proportion: The solution is a hybrid of woven fabric and Lycra that looks newer than leggings. “

“ Jens always sticks to his woman which is edgy, always black and white, he always does a different take on tuxedo which is very interesting… His woman is a very edgy, very sexy, but very, very cool. ”

“ Yet another fashion spark from the past is being reignited. Pierre Cardin, the founding father of the 1960’s, would find his satellite shapes – circles in perpetual motion set against angular geometry – in the work of Jens Laugesen. His flat round application to the front of a dress was an update on Cardin’s style. “

2007“ It was one of the most beautiful collections seen this week… Models with faces bare…walked slowly up and down the catwalk to romantic piano music and the sound of crashing waves… The tai-loring was second-to-none, the dresses whimsical as well as seriously stylish and Jens is in London’s front line. ”

“ Jens Laugesen has not only matured as a designer of strong silhouettes filled with subtle decorations, He also picked up the Andam Fellowship from the Paris Luxury Group LVMH Moet (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy) to help him build his company.Such was his passion for black – noble outfits with wide but rounded cape shoulders and sparkle illuminating the darkness – that a cheer rose from the photographers pen when a white blouse finally appeared. It came with a bell shaped black skirt, a silhouette that was a way forward for the designer to expand ha rigidly narrow line. The swelling thighs of jodhpur-shaped pants seemed more cwhalleng-ing, but mostly this exercise in proportions made a clear, strong show. “

ANDAM AWARD“As the first London-based designer to win both the British Fashion Council’s New Generation Award and the prestigious Andam Award from the French, Jens Laugesen is a man to watch. His sharply tailored, avantgarde pieces are now more wearable than ever, with beautiful fabrics and modish lines offering a thoroughly modern vision of urban chic. ”

FUTURE CLASSIC“ Danish-born, London-based designer Jens Laugesen draws inspiration from uniform and genenric garments like the t-shirt, the shirt, the tank top, the tuxedo jacket and the tailored pants. In and attempt of “understanding the semiotic of garments” he deconstructs and then re-assem-bles them generating what he subtly calls hybrid shapes. In Laugesens new collection, this philosophy of “hybrid reconstruction” comes together with the inspirations from Danish painter Wilhelm Hammershoi. “
