LAST WEEKPresiding: Barb Jeffries Invocation: Cleve ClintonPledge: Cleve ClintonSpeaker: Dr. Michael Hinojosa, Supt.Program: Dallas ISD

President Barb Jeffries called the meeting to order and announced that this would be our last online virtual meeting

because we will be returning to Maggianos soon. PP Cleve Clinton gave the invocation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Then the Star Spangled Banner played on video. PE Happy Franklin announced the Marketplace Advertiser of the Week, Daniel Drabinski and Mass Mutual. President Barb announced the plan to resume meeting at Maggianos in a safe and socially distanced manner. She thanked Mark Neace and his partner for hosting our meetings at SyncLab Media for the past seven months. She introduced them both on screen and gave them thank you gifts. New Member Zach Davis was awarded his Blue Badge, so is no longer “new.” She also said that there will be new, upgraded badges when we return to in-person meetings.

There was a meeting recently at Bonton Farms to discuss the Clinic Project. We are hoping for a groundbreaking in the first quarter of 2021. Our member Stephanie Bohan is also working with the Clinic Project to assure that it will provide all of the needed medical services.

Next, Joe McMahon gave his new member speech. Joe is originally from Chicago, but moved to Dallas with his family’s business. He met the Marcus family, which led to his working for them for the next thirty-eight years, primarily in an executive role. He took a break to move to New York to work for Bruno Magli. He is now retired and is ready to start the next phase of life. He is look-ing forward to meeting new people and finding new opportunities through Rotary. He is looking forward to participating in Legacy of Leadership as well as many of the community projects. Jeff Sheehan introduced our speaker to-day Dr. Michael Hinojosa, Superintendent of the Dallas Independent School District. Jeff asked him to speak about the greatest chal

eighty percent of the students are economic-ally disadvantaged and need to be in the classroom learning. So everybody’s safety needs must be balanced with the education-al needs of these students. He said the dis-trict has a $2 Billion budget, and they have not missed a payroll, even though the payroll staff have worked from home. Teachers can-not work from home if the kids are in the classroom. The Dallas district is the last local district to start and as teachers have watch-ed the suburban schools and understand the routine, they are feeling more confident about returning. Overcoming the initial fear is probably the biggest problem, but once they get there, they’re good. Luckily, Dallas ISD has a long term technology plan. All of the high school students have a laptop, and see-ing what was coming, those were sent home with them at Spring Break. They accelerated their plan for elementary kids, and now all of them have a chrome book. They are working on a plan for the very youngest students. Then they discovered that thirty-six thousand homes in Dallas did not have internet con-nectivity. So they have a short term plan to use hotspots, but they are working on a long-term solution. They have formed a coalition with all of the local leaders and telecom com-panies to work out a solution. He noted that education is the last institution to change; businesses have reinvented themselves, but schools are much as they were a hundred years ago. This pandemic is forcing them to do things differently. On the first day of school enrollment was down twenty-eight percent, but now it has increased to only seven percent. Even that could cost the dis-trict $30 to 60 Million in revenue.

HE WHO LAUGHS, LASTS

In the face of the COVID-19 emergency, RMHD continues to keep our doors open and remains committed to supporting the families of seriously ill or injured children. Now more than ever, families need us to pro-vide a safe and comforting place to rest, warm meals, transportation, stability and, above all, a sense of hope. You have helped make that possible with your gift. This year nearly 2,000 children and their families will find care and comfort while they are away from home because of generous in-dividuals like you. We are so grateful for your belief in our mission and wish you and your loved ones the very best.Gratefully,/s/Jill Cumnock /s/Diane FullingimChief Exec. Officer Chief Development Officer
