JESUS’ MANIFESTO

18 “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor.

He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners

and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, 19 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”

(Luke 4:18-19)

JESUS MIRACLES

• You have been allocated one of the following miracles. Your task is, for your miracle, to – Retell the miracle story to the whole class– Explain how this miracle fits into the above

manifesto– List the single most important lesson to be

learned from this miracle and to find a single Bible verse that supports this lesson.

An evil spirit, Luke 4:31-37• A man possessed by a demon recognised Jesus in

the synagogue at Capernaum and Jesus delivered him to the amazement of the people.

• “freedom for the prisoners” or “release the oppressed”

• Single most important lesson– Jesus’ simple and effective power over demons– The demon recognised who Jesus was.

• “Ha! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are—the Holy One of God!” (Luke 4:34)

Healing many people, Luke 4:38-44• Jesus healed Simon’s mother in law of a fever and at sunset

the people brought all who had various kinds of sicknesses and Jesus healed them. The demons called out “You are the Son of God” but Jesus silenced them. At dawn he went to a solitary place but the people found him and tried to stop him leaving but Jesus said that he was sent to preach the good news to other towns.

• “freedom for the prisoners” or “release the oppressed”

• Single most important lesson– Healing sick people wasn’t Jesus most important task – preaching

the good news of the kingdom of God was.

• But he said, “I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns also, because that is why I was sent.” (Luke 4:43)

Calling the first disciples, Luke 5:1-11• Jesus taught the people from Simon’s boat. When he had

finished he told Simon to put out to deep water but Simon protested that they had worked hard all night but had caught nothing but he did what Jesus said and they caught so many fish that their nets began to break and they got their partners in the other boat to help them. Both boats were so full that they began to sink. Simon told Jesus to go away but Jesus told them that from then on they would catch men.

• The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me

• Single most important lesson– Simon and his partners were to become disciples of Jesus and

share the work of bringing people to him.

• and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid; from now on you will catch men.” (Luke 5:10)

Man with leprosy, Luke 5:12-16• A man with leprosy fell to his face before Jesus and

said that he could heal him if he wanted to. Jesus said that he was willing and healed him by commanding “Be clean”. The news about Jesus spread but Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed.

• To release the oppressed.

• Single most important lesson.– The willingness of Jesus to heal a leper whom the rest of

society would have shunned.

• Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man. “I am willing,” he said. “Be clean!” And immediately the leprosy left him. (Luke 5:13)

Healing a paralysed man, Luke 5:17-26• A paralysed man was lowered through a rood in

front of Jesus who forgave his sins and healed him. Pharisees and teachers of the law were present who objected that only God could forgive sins and so Jesus was some sort of imposter.

• Freedom for sinners or release for the oppressed.

• Single most important lesson.– Jesus has authority to forgive sins and so by implication he

is God.

• But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins....” He said to the paralyzed man, “I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home.” (Luke 5:24 )

Man with shrivelled hand, Luke 6:1-11

• On a Sabbath day Jesus healed a man with a shrivelled hand. Looking for a reason to accuse Jesus they Pharisees were watching closely and Jesus asked before healing him if it was lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it. They were furious with him.

• Release for the oppressed.

• Single most important lesson.– To heal a person on the Sabbath is acceptable as it is doing

good.

• Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, which is lawful on the Sabbath: to do good or to do evil, to save life or to destroy it?” (Luke 6:9)

A centurion’s servant, Luke 7:1-10

• A centurion sent elders of the Jews to ask Jesus to come and heal a highly valued servant who was sick and about to die. He then sent other friends telling Jesus that he didn’t deserve to have him enter his house but that all he had to do was give the command and his servant would be healed.

• Release for the oppressed.

• Single most important lesson– Jesus recognised the centurion’s remarkable faith.

• When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, “I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel.” (Luke 7:9)

A widow’s son, Luke 7:11-17• Approaching the town gate of Nain Jesus

encountered a funeral procession for the only son of a widow. He had compassion on the woman, stopped the coffin and raised the son. The people recognised him as a prophet.

• Freedom for prisoners

• Single most important lesson– The compassion and power of Jesus.

• When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, “Don’t cry.” (Luke 7:13)

• They were all filled with awe and praised God. “A great prophet has appeared among us,” they said. “God has come to help his people.” (Luke 7:16)

Calming a storm, Luke 8:22-25• Jesus and his disciples were crossing the lake when

a storm came up and they were in great danger. They woke Jesus who rebuked the wind and the raging waters so that they stopped. He then asked the disciples where their faith was. This caused them to ask each other who Jesus was.

• To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour

• Single most important lesson• The disciples’ lack of faith and the identity of Jesus.

• “Where is your faith?” he asked his disciples. In fear and amazement they asked one another, “Who is this? He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey him.” (Luke 8:25)

A demon-possessed man, Luke 8:26-39• Having crossed the lake Jesus met a man possessed by many

evil spirits. They pleaded not to be ordered to the Abyss so Jesus allowed them to enter a herd of about 2,000 pigs who then ran down the hill into the lake and drowned. The people of the town were afraid when they saw the demon possessed man clothed and in his right mind so they asked Jesus to leave the area. He did and told the man to remain and tell people what God had done for him.

• Release for the oppressed

• Single most important lesson.– The power of Jesus over demons– The instruction to tell what God has done for you.

• “Return home and tell how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how much Jesus had done for him. (Luke 8:39)

A dead girl and a sick woman, Luke 8:40-56

• A synagogue ruler named Jairus asked Jesus to heal his daughter who was dying. On the way a woman who had been subject to bleeding for 12 years touched him. He stopped because he had sensed power leaving him and he asked who had touched him. The woman came forward and told her story. She was told that her faith had healed her. In the meantime Jairus’ daughter died but Jesus insisted on continuing to her house where he raised her.

• Freedom for prisoners and release for the oppressed

• Single most important lesson– The woman’s faith– Jesus’ power over death.

• Then he said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you. Go in peace.” (Luke 8:48)

• Her parents were astonished, but he ordered them not to tell anyone what had happened. (Luke 8:56)

Feeding 5000, Luke 9:10-17• Late in the afternoon after teaching and healing

Jesus fed a crowd of 5,00 men from five loaves of bread and two fish leaving 12 baskets full of leftovers.

• To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour

• Single most important lesson– Jesus’ provision for the people.

• They all ate and were satisfied, and the disciples picked up twelve basketfuls of broken pieces that were left over. (Luke 9:17)

Transfiguration, Luke 9:28-36• On a mountain praying Jesus’ appearance changed

and he was met by Moses and Elijah who talked with him about his departure. The disciples were sleepy but Peter suggested building shelters. A cloud enveloped them and a voice said “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him” and they were alone with Jesus.

• To proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour

• Single most important lesson.– Anticipation of the death of Jesus– Voice affirming Jesus’ identity.

• A voice came from the cloud, saying, “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.” (Luke 9:35)

Boy with an evil spirit, Luke 9:37-45• A man asked Jesus to heal his son who was controlled by a

spirit whom the disciples couldn’t cast out. Jesus’ rebuked them for their lack of faith and healed the boy to the amazement of the observers. Jesus began to talk with his disciples about his coming death.

• Freedom for prisoners and release for the oppressed.

• Single most important lesson– Jesus’ power over demons– Need for faith– Coming betrayal of Jesus

• And they were all amazed at the greatness of God. While everyone was marveling at all that Jesus did, he said to his disciples, “Listen carefully to what I am about to tell you: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of men.” (Luke 9:43,44)

By referring to three of Jesus’ miracles explain how these miracles demonstrate Jesus’ purpose for his ministry and how

they add to our understanding of who Jesus was.

Blessings and Woes, Luke 6:17-26

Blessed Woe

Poor, hungry, weeping, persecuted

Rich, well fed, laughing, well

spoken of

Great reward in heaven

Have their reward now.

Love for Enemies, Luke 6:27-36

Love your enemies

Treat them as you would like them to treat you

There is no credit in loving your friends

Judging Others, Luke 6:37-42

Instruction:Do not judge

Parable 1:Students will be like their teachers.

Parable 2:Take the plank out of your own eye before you take the speck from your brother’s.

A Tree and Its Fruit, Luke 6:43-45

Behaviour of people comes from their hearts.Trees bear their own fruit.

The Wise and Foolish Builders, Luke 6:46-49

• Jesus question. “Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?”

• The person who hears but doesn’t do is like a poorly built house that doesn’t survive the storm.

• The person who hears and does is like a well built house that survives the storm.

• The unstated message: When you hear make sure that you do what Jesus said.

how he taught them and how these things often seem wrong to people today.
